It is just silly to host a ground breaking event with the Mayor and Governor then not do anything for weeks. I get you wanted the "buzz" of doing it at the CWS, but that buzz goes away if you let it sit for a month.

Maybe they're still waiting for their building/ demolition permit. That process has been known to slow down projects a bit.

They have nothing to do with one another...

Ground Breakings are nothing more than a pub grab. They are only for marketing and they vary greatly from one to the next. They range from nothing to an elaborate affair with dignitaries and all kinds of special guests, catering, and the whole works.

Who knows about this one. May be its the only day all the dignitaries had open on their calendar. I think people are getting all worked up over absolutely nothing.

personally, I dont think they will fence off or start until early/mid Aug. As big as a project this is, i am sure the contractors are in the middle of securing all resources needed to build. As there are so many other projects in the works I am sure that resources are part of the issue. Once it starts i think it will be rather fast paced. (for the hotel anyway)

Not trying to make a big deal of it, but there is no record of any building permit application or issuance on the City of Omaha's Permit & Inspections website for the property at 1002 Capitol Ave. The last item listed was a site plan review on 1/9/2014. My guess is they are still working on the construction drawings, or contractors are working on their bids, or they are negotiating bids & contracts. Ground-Breaking ceremonies are more symbolic than anything else. We'll have to wait and see when it actually starts...hopefully before the ground freezes.

I was searching for the actual building permits for 1002 Capitol Ave. or Capitol Ave. in general. The Building Board of Review or Zoning Board of Appeals are usually just for when the owner or developer is seeking some kind of variance.

Ok, I was just thinking the info might come under 1009 in the future. I don't know how they came up with that odd number for a northern property.

Yeah, It is strange they're using 1009 on that description. I think Shamrock or Moylan does own 1009 on the south side of Capitol though.
Anyway, it's kind of fun to track these things to see what you can find out.

The decorative fencing that lined the the southeast portion of this property was removed and yesterday. It's not much but its something.

The shooting in the parking lot on Saturday night sure doesn't shine a good light on this neighborhood. Need to get rid of the Capital bar and all the gang bangers who go there.

I missed the shooting.

Went by last night, and this parking lot looks the same as it always does. Can't see that anything is going on there. Looks like it did the last time I parked there for UNO hockey.

The only thing that is different so far is that they removed the decorative fencing around the lot. I drove by yesterday and it looked like it was all gone. But other than that, nothing has changed.

Which, I suppose given the Fashion Week announcement using the lot again that they made a while back.. I guess makes this not a surprise. I was hoping they (Omaha Fashion Week organizers) were wrong

If I recall correctly there was some delay between the groundbreaking of TD Ameritrade stadium and the actual start of construction as well. For what its worth one would think that if the mayor, the governor, and all the other execs and dignitaries are going to go on TV with the silver spades that they would be making sure this thing happens.

Looks like the building permit review is in progress for the Lot 2 Marriott portion of this project. They've submitted drawings for the building shell and structure. But the review is delayed until they submit site plan drawings, as of 8/8/2014.....according to the processing status.

When it was announced that OFW was going to use this land it was pretty clear that this has been their timeline all along.

One thing I have noticed is that the city has really let the landscaping on this property go which would make you think they don't have plans to use it anymore.

Ground Breaking is just ceremonial, not required at all, other than for publicity. They were just trying to take advantage of the eyes already focused on Omaha for the CWS, most likely.

It starts looking suspicious if nothing happens for a while after the ceremony though. It would be nice if we could skip having lots full of weeds first though.

As a neighbor of this parking lot I am excited about the project, but am not excited about the condition of the parking lot now. Tall grass and weeds. Some of the lights and signs are gone. Pretty much looks like |expletive|.

Shouldn't they have already done site plans prior to this point? Or is this something that usually occurs right about now?

I noticed most of the trees along the East & West sides of the parking lot were removed by spade. I'm glad they were relocated and not just cut down.

My opinion only:

Odds of being built.

1) Capitol District in some form including the hotel & residential.

2) Civic development in some form.

3) Lanoha

As for office space it all depends on who knows who and who wants their name on a new building.
