OK gang, I've finally decided to pull the trigger relocate to Omaha later this year, probably October-November. Remote job-hunting from Florida has proven to be an impossible task (people have a hard time belieiving that I actually want to move), so I'm going to move first and find work second.
Here's my question -- what's the hiring market like? I have a call-center/IT background, and I'm looking for work as a tech writer, or at least working in a call center. What's the market like for someone seeking this type of employment?
Thanks for all your help.

I would assume you're already aware that Omaha is the telemarketing capital of the universe. I'd suggest starting your search with PayPal or Gallup, but you probably already know that.
I guess I couldn't comment on the job market as a whole, since I haven't looked for a job in Omaha since I was bagging groceries in high school. The job I'm in now kind of fell into my lap (and it's actually in Fremont).
Good luck and way to make such a ballsy move.

If you haven't done it already, check the CareerLink website - http://careerlink.org/ - check there. The site lists jobs in Omaha, Lincoln and Nebraska.

You shouldn't have very much trouble getting a job here with your background. Try West Teleservices first. They are the biggest employer of their type in Omaha.

JJJJ--- that's an entirely different thread. I have an extensive list of thoughts I'd like to share with the eOmaha community, and I just need time to organize them all properly. I know you're all dying to hear. ;)

GaryFl,
Also try Ameritrade. They have a customer service call center in Bellevue. Good luck.

Don't forget Sietel (sp), Greyhound, Carlson Hotels, Omni, Omaha Steaks, ADT, the one at 120th and Blondo whose name escapes me at the moment, and about 24 others.

Thanks for the responses, everyone. I'm a little nervous about relocating with no job lined up, but the long-distance search has been unfeasible. But I'm confident that I can find call-center work in Omaha (which is one of the reasons I chose this city to relocate to). I'm planning to live downtown, and I'm excited about the move.

I'd be wary of Gallup having worked there. If you can work it how they want you to you can do good. And considering your background you probably would do fine. Some other place comes to mind as a good place to work....Mutual of Omaha!

DTO is right, to a point. If you're an interviewer you can make good money if you have the knack. In fact, many people I work with now started out as interviewers, including myself. If you can start somewhere other than interviewing though, you might be happier. Gallup does all their hiring online so if you're looking for Gallup jobs go to http://www.gallup.com/careers.DTO Luv wrote:I'd be wary of Gallup having worked there. If you're looking for a job in the call center field... I can't imagine a better place to come to than Omaha.

Gary,
I work for First National Bank of Omaha and they have call centers all around the city. There are a couple of then downtown as well.
