It's called the "Lipstick Building" in NYC....by Philip Johnson and John Burgee.

The other one is the "Gherkin Building" in London by Sir Norman Foster, the architect of the Joslyn addition. Good stuff!

I was just thinking something like this:

H&R Block's HQ in KC

Or this building in Milwaukee:

Or maybe something like this:

I'll take all three, please.

The H&R Block building is something realistic to shoot for...its only 17 stories and isn't something to out of sort for Omaha. I would gladly take it. I am just sick of all the big, boxy buildings that take up a whole city block. After all, part of the purpose of building a high-rise is to eliminate the need for so much space. Each block can have multiple buildings on it. I know that a lot of companies want their own block so it is easier to monitor security among other things, but having a few tall buildings on the block wouldn't hurt either.

I have faith it'll end up better and more innovative than the last 3 images, not that they are bad....nothing really special about the first one other than the curved surfaces. The last two are approaching the caliber we'll see, if I was betting.

Here's the pyramid building in NYC that just as topped out, might be a little too progressive for Omaha though.

I think this building is far more likely to have "revolutionary" floor plans, green features and use of natural light than its visual design will be. I am sure it will be an attractive building, but the floor plan getting people out of the traditional cubicles is a big trend for office users now a days.

A lot of those examples posted waste a ton of resources and space. "Starchitecture" has a lot of debate now a days wether it is a good trend or not. HDR as a firm doesn't really leave the practical if you look at their portfolio. Attractive and functional is my expectation.

Most of HDR's newer skyscrapers involve a wavy facade. That may be included in the design.

How much do you want to bet people from HDR are watching this forum laughing?

I imagine they realize that a lot of this is partly in jest. Hopefully they are as anxious as we are to have something really nice and distinctive in Omaha.

And I bet it is hollow just like the 433' capital building. I'm just imploring HDR to one-up Lincoln...

So, that is H.H. Henningson on top, gesturing toward the FNB building saying, We Own You?

Speaking of Henningson... 2017 would be the 100th anniversary of HDR, or of its predecessor Henningson Engineering Company. I wonder how they will be celebrating this anniversary?

Better. It's Mike Harper pointing to all the buildings he didn't like.

But in all seriousness, it was supposed to be a monument to Lenin in Russia, and it was going to be taller than the Empire State Building. They actually got as far as pouring a foundation for the thing before WWI(II?) stopped it.

LEAKED!

Here's the design folks. HDR servers were hacked and this was leaked earlier today. Not trying to be a dick, but it looks like HDR is getting a little cocky. However, at least the height obsessed and those insistent upon something without a flat top in Omaha won't be getting the shaft in this deal. The length and girth seem to be in proportion, and it's taller than 5 stories, so we know it won't be wood. And like it or not, it definitely takes a lot of balls to do something in this vein. Say what you want about HDR, but with a design like this, they're definitely not a bunch of stiffs.

You forgot the part about the fountain at the top which is set to turn on at regular intervals. There will also be a light in the fountain that will color the water yellow, red and white.

They may be trying to go for a more 'natural' look, or, a more modern approach with more intense landscaping.

With plans so concrete, I don't think performance in erection will be an issue here.

Now it looks great today, but as the building ages do you think it will be able to hold up against newer, younger buildings? And will it be able to keep performing for HDR's needs?

With HDR's engineering prowess, I'm sure this building will maintain its erection, rigidity, and perform whenever it needs to entertain visiting clients.

I love the idea of the height but what about the parking garage? There are office towers in downtown Vegas which have parking garages 5 floors tall and a building set upon that. From a distance it looks great but at street level it looks gritty and uninviting.
I'm super excited about this building and no matter what is built, I'm sure it will be a great addition to the skyline. I hope however that with the number of above ground floors devoted to the parking garage that it has a better street view than this building in downtown Las Vegas.

Omaha's last attempt at ground floor/multiple floor parking was the 12th & Jackson Hyatt Place. Even now, I personally still don't know how to evaluate this type of architectural development. While the Hyatt goes out of the way to hide the parking garage aspect, I guess I am so used to structurally occupying windows to make a contemporary judgement. I would put the older garage above Roja/Parliment on 12th & Harney in the same discussion. In the final analysis, I guess for myself, the better you can hide the parking function of the structure, making it aesthetically pleasing as possible, the more I could accept their structural inclusion to this area.
