Looks like a ton more steel has arrived for the apt tower.

Also looks like they removed some of the temporary shoring jacks from the first floor of the hotel and have begun installing them on the 2nd floor.

Looks like the third floor (which is the first floor of rooms) is at eye level with the top floor of the Hilton.

I am not sure it is that high, but maybe equal to the 6th or 7th floor of the Hilton.

They installed 10-15 more I beams on the apt tower today. It now almost stretches all the way to Capitol.

I've been watching that go up, too. Every week it seems, I take a spin downtown, and for a long time, nothing but dirt. Now, floors are going up! I do love the design and I am so excited.

As far as the three original proposed designs: I like all of them. I do think I like this one best for Omaha.

Along with new glass & sleekness, I hope Omaha also gets new buildings that retain a warm, solid feeling. For example, I always liked Austin's skyline (with a lot of warm, solid, marble-clad buildings), but now it is almost getting over-run with glassy projects. There has to be a balance, imo.

Also: I feel Omaha barely crossed a line, and removed one-too-many historic buildings, and we don't dare remove one more. So now, we also have to add some warm & solid buildings, too, that we "minused" out of downtown, and add something back. It can't just be about all new glass & sleekness. Just my opinion...

Maybe someone with a construction background can answer this question: Why do they remove all the shoring jacks on lower floors only to replace them later? They are doing it with this project and I also noticed this on the Hyatt Place. I think part of it is to remove the form that the concrete was poured onto, but it appears that they removed the jacks and replaced them with completely different ones on the first floor.

I'm not a contractor, but I believe you're correct about removing the forms. They likely still need to have jacks/supports in-place until the concrete cures enough to obtain full design strength...usually 28 days, unless they used accelerators in the concrete mix. It's also possible extra shoring is needed if they plan to temporarily apply loads to the structure which may be greater than what the permanent spans were designed to carry.

You are correct on both counts. Concrete continues to cure long after the forms are removed, even months later concrete will still be hardening and getting stronger. The outer potion of the slab being supported by the bracing is relatively thin and designed to support a small live load and probably the curtain wall exterior of the building. You will notice that the braces installed today line up under the legs of the form scaffolds being set up for the third floor. This will transfer the load from the forms on the third floor, through the second floor slab that is cantilevered out from the beam, down through the jacks paced on the first floor, and finally to the foundation walls. This should prevent catastrophic failure of the forms when the pour takes place.

Yeah that south shaft didn't emerge until fairly recenty..

BTW, may I ask: Where is that construction cam? It will save me an occasional spin downtown. There are these apartments going up down in SW Omaha, that I'm excited to see what their exteriors will look like, and I occasionally take a spin by them, too, and progress has barely moved forward -- every time I drive by. So, I wish there was a construction cam on them, too.

And, I visited the new website posted here. Thanks for that, too. I learn there's going to be a Starbucks in the new Marriott hotel, or in the district! That's awesome.

I actually drove downtown around 3pm on this beautiful spring day, and I-80 was just bustling with cars (this city is noticeably more bustling than it used to be). Downtown Omaha always looks neat from that I-480 corridor, imo, with the crisp, striped Woodmen standing tall on the hill, the FNB tower standing beyond it, and the other buildings around it. I always think "O-M-A-H-A !" when I see that view. Anyways, took a spin by the Capitol District.

No problem, Omaha Cowboy (by the way, I have a pair of cowboy boots, too!)! I realize we are all busy... In fact, I have to stop peeking at this forum.

It is just amazing how more bustling Omaha is becoming. I was thinking about how I-680 and I-80 both pump traffic through basically the center of town now, when both interstates used to exist more on the fringes of town. And, how we are getting more major hotels downtown now -- and not one, but TWO Marriotts in the city now.

I agree. You can tell that just driving through the city proper. The difference between now and, say 15-20 years ago is significantly noticeable.

Definitely. Even at 9 pm on a Sunday evening, I-80 is unbelievably busy still (imo). When I was reading about them redoing I-80 through Council Bluffs, I read statistics that showed how much more traffic the interstate carries nowadays. West Dodge Road carries way more traffic than it used, as we know. Being located on I-80 (America's coast-to-coast "Main Street"), and in the center of the country, we know Omaha gets a lot of traffic even just passing through it, along with our local traffic. (In fact, the actor Matt Damon is in town taping some movie, or something, and in a little interview he said that he had passed through our town on I-80 a time or two when he was young, driving from Boston to Los Angeles, when he was a young actor. Thought that was interesting.) I like the Dallas Cowboys, too. I'm not really into football, but I like the Huskers (of course), the Dallas Cowboys, and Indianapolis Colts.

I agree. The 14 stories of the Marriott will appear much taller due to the elevation and how close it is right next to the interstate.. More "ominous" looking. And that's a good thing. The photo ops driving into downtown on 480 should be quite impressive...
