I think many pages back I vsaid that the office building would be constructed later. I am not sure how they could fit any more equipment and materials on the site as it is.

Thanks! I couldn't get out to take my usual Sat/Sun photo shoot since I had to work over the weekend, so I got out there after work today (yeah, I had a great three day weekend) around 4. It was nice nd sunny when I left home, but by the time I got there the skies were turning dark behind me. But I see that Brad got a great shot after I left. Big E got a nice rainbow shot also but I don't think we will see that here.

I would have had a 4 day weekend.. But got roped into working 6 hours on Saturday. Back to the grind tomorrow..

Marriott, which will give downtown another full-service hotel when it opens next year, is on schedule

The skyline-changing Marriott in downtown Omaha has risen three floors so far, and the 12-story hotel is on target to open in 2017.

I thought the hotel was supposed to be 14 stories?

The bureau counts the Marriott in the Capitol District as Douglas County’s seventh full-service property with more than 200 rooms.

His hope is to open the Marriott by June 2017, in time for that year’s College World Series. He said he’ll know a more precise date after the structure is fully enclosed.
Also set to open next year on the district’s western edge is a 19,000-square-foot apartment building with ground-floor retail shops. The 200-plus residential units are to open in phases, with the first wave of apartment dwellers moving in during spring 2017, Moylan said.

Other pieces include office and retail buildings and a town-square-like plaza. A 505-stall parking garage to be built on the north side of Davenport Street at 12th Street will be attached by skywalks to the Capitol District’s apartments and hotel.
Moylan’s Shamrock Development also owns a half-block southeast of 10th and Capitol, which is pegged for future development. Moylan said he is working on ideas that would complement the district but has not determined a specific use.

I feel like they never get floor counts right in these articles. I thought it was 15 at one point.

The 19,000sq ft for the apartment building is the first floor/main level area. The Marriott site still lists and shows the hotel at 14 floors with a nice size peak on the North end of the building giving the presence of a 15 story. I'm assuming this is still right but who knows this is Omaha, so maybe they were originally counting a basement and rooftop, HDR

like to the count. Lol

The W-H, to me, has come a long way.. From the times in the early 2000's when it became nearly a daily phenomenon of them minimizing Omaha as an actual city of importance, let alone gaffing on a few stories of a proposed highrise downtown..

As many know from back in the day, I was one of their biggest critics. Whether it was a minimizing Omaha editorial, or God forbid, another looney, childish rant from buffoonish columnist Rainbow Rowell (I think I threw a party when they opened the door and let her walk for good).. You name it, when the W-H minimized Omaha, I was there with the deserved criticism..

But sometimes, very subtly, whether it's getting the number wrong on an Omaha population estimate, or missing a couple stories on an under-construction highrise.. where even on the projects own web page, they have the accurate specs listed- The W-H will still get caught with their pants down..

I believe that's what happened here. Lazy journalism yielding a lack of research.. Thus providing inaccurate information to the public. The Don's money is, of course, on the W-H getting this wrong.. The hotel is still a 14 story structure.. With a 15 story presence...

It looks like the hotel tower is almost the same height as the Hilton when looking at the construction cam.

It sure does look great! Am I alone in hoping (beyond hope) that one day the section of 480, between the river and 75, will be torn down? Imagine how great--tranformational, really--that would be for the urban core of Omaha. Ohh, the possibilities.

That's a pretty universal idea on this forum, however, the cost would be monumental if we did away with it completely, and astronomical if we buried it. See Boston's 'Big Dig'.

Regarding Boston's "Big Dig," that nightmare of a project far, far, and away outpaces what would be needed to remove and improve the above mentioned stretch of 480--in both cost and scale. I liken it more to what San Francisco has done over the last couple of decades (but still on a smaller scale)--specifically, the removal of the Embarcadero Freeway along the city's waterfront and a stretch of the Central Freeway, which gave way to Octavia Boulevard. With the first example, demolishing the elevated freeway resulted in the removal of both a physical and psychological barrier, opening up space for pedestrian friendly streets, plazas, private development, and reconnected that portion of the city with The Bay. If you've ever been, you know that there are few places more enjoyable, especially on a sunny day. Similar barriers would be removed, I think, with the removal of the above mentioned section of the 480 elevation. For one, there would no longer be the arbitrary distinction between north and south that currently prevails.

Anyway, I know I have gotten a bit off topic, lol! So I will leave it at that.

I'm not sure we even need that freeway through to 75 but we certainly need a bridge over the river. How about do away with the portion bifurcation our city core and build a nice looking bridge that picks up and dumps traffic right into the grid like the current ramps do. Even the Iowa side would benefit with a streetscape to help them extend the Broadway corridor closer to the riverfront.

Now the question I have, is this Marriott going to be 12 stories or 14 stories? The web site for Capitol District still says 14. The W-H had a piece about 2 or so weeks back stating 12.. Then I read this presser from 05/24/16:

This story link states 12 stories twice.. What the ??..

Maybe it's a 14 story building with a hotel that has 12 floors. I wish we could get this straight...

You can see that the north end of the building has an extra floor slab than the south end in Coyote's last picture. Could be 14 is counting from the north end and adding a mechanical level on top and the 12 count is just counting habitable floors? Who knows.

The first one in the elevator when it is finished is going to find out whether it's 12 or 14 stories

And, the last that I have read, it's still going to have a rooftop pool. Not sure if that affects things.
