Definitely not. It just proves what I said last year. People here in Lincoln like to watch the Omaha stations.
They always have. Blame those idiots at Nielsen :koko: ..

Omaha/Lincoln should be one television market...

Of course someone in the comment section blames the end of net neutrality rules.

Lincoln is much closer to Omaha than they are to Grand Island, Hastings and Kearney. Yet, Lincoln's part of their market. That just ain't right.

Of course it isn’t right..

That’s why I told you a couple of years ago to write Nielsen and express your opinion/concern.. How far did that get you?..

They don’t want to listen.. But- If the US Census redefines MSA and CSA components as they are expected to do later this year..and they combine Omaha/Lincoln into the same CSA (this depends on hitting the 15% commute number between the 2 core cities), then Nielsen will have to take notice of that happenstance and (hopefully) adjust accordingly...

I know places can be moved from one market to another. I remember Durango Colorado petitioning to move to Denver's TV market from Farmington, NM, because they wanted Colorado news. But have they ever made adjustments of this size before?

And didn't ABQ try to stop that move? Something about not losing sales revenue?
Could you imagine the process of taking the Lincoln viewer revenue out of that market?

I think at this point, the only hope for a combined Omaha/Lincoln television market, is if the US Census redefines the CSA and combines Omaha/Lincoln.. If that happens, it’s going to be hard for Nielsen to justify and ignore...

The Lincoln and Omaha stations would fight being combined. They'd each lose market share if the population base grows and the viewers don't. That doesn't make them any money with the ad agencies. Plus, Omaha and Lincoln stations own stations in the rest of the state and while Grand Island/Kearney/Hastings is a radio Nielsen/Arbitron market, it wouldn't make economic sense to let those TV stations become a relatively tiny TV market and miss out on the existing national buys they get being combined with Lincoln.

St Joseph and Topeka are each about the same distance from KC as Lincoln is from Omaha and they have their own local stations and separate markets.

So I may be off since I have returned to Omaha after living in a few bigger TV markets, but I have a couple questions...

1) When did it become "news" to have someone stand at what is nothing but a big monitor are read out loud twitter feeds?

2) What is the point to have someone report traffic, but they are basically reporting google maps, but then turn it over to a real traffic reporter to get the no kidding traffic?

3) What is with the random spot rotations of channel 6? It seems like every week a different anchor is in a different time slot.

LOL, nothing new on 6. I remember when they use to play viewers voicemails.

The Traffic guy on 6 in the mornings is awful. He talks like he just moved to Omaha and NEVER been anywhere in Omaha. He has zero concept of how our streets layout. Always hear stuff like Southbound on Center, Eastbound on 72nd Street. Car stalled in the northbound lanes of dodge...

I'm really surprised they haven't filled that spot yet. Seems like a big enough market they should be able to find someone decent. I'm guessing if they were going with an internal candidate, the would have made that move by now.

Because it's cheaper than producing and presenting a real local news production. What's really sad is that the people in the Omaha area (and the local sponsors) accept that kind of drek as a local news production.

I will admit that lately, Channel 7 has improved, but they still pad the timeslots with a lot of happy talk and fluff.

I was under the impression that Gill got the spot, but then I saw her on Sunday afternoon, so I don't know. Maybe Big 6 has a poison reputation. (Maybe? LOLOL)

Channel 6 introduced a new Daybreak meteorologist this morning - Mallory Schnell. Is Peta Sheerwood still at the station?

As of earlier this week, she was. Sadly.

Mallory is from the south, the accent will be welcome to hear.

For a while, I've had several "What If" scenarios regarding the Omaha stations, such as:

-KMTV and WOWT never switched network affiliates in 1956 and then switched back in 1986? So KMTV remained with CBS the whole entire time and WOWT remained with NBC the whole entire time?
-So because WOWT remained with NBC, Tom Brokaw joined that station instead of KMTV in 1962 and left in ‘65?
-Jim Flowers never left KETV for WOWT in 1992? Instead he stayed at KETV as chief meteorologist until his retirement in 2016?
-Ross Jernstrom also never left KETV for WOWT in 1994-95? Instead he’s still at KETV today as their sports director?
-When Dave Webber stepped down as sports director for WOWT in 2009-10, Merlyn Klaus got promoted to the position and is still there today?
-Dale Munson still retires as WOWT’s chief meteorologist in the early 90’s? But instead of stepping down in 1991, he does in June of 1992? And Bill Randby goes to WOWT instead of KETV that year? He becomes WOWT’s chief meteorologist instead of KETV’s?
-Randby’s wife, Julie Cornell, also goes to WOWT instead of KETV? She starts out as a weekend news anchor and when Pat Persaud steps down as weeknight co-anchor in 2005, Cornell becomes John Knicely’s new co-anchor and still is today?
-Michael Scott never left KETV in 1993-94? Instead he stays at KETV until 1999? Then Rob McCartney becomes the new co-anchor that year?
-When John Mason leaves KMTV in 1995, Brad Stephens becomes Loretta Carroll’s new co-anchor?
-Tom Bevacqua never left KMTV in 1993? Instead, he’s still there today as chief meteorologist? But starting in 1988, he no longer does the midday newscast? Just 5:00, 6:00 and 10:00?
-When Mark Massaro joins KMTV in 1988, Bob Cameron moves from weekends to weekday mornings and midday instead of leaving the station altogether?
-Cameron stays at KMTV until 1993 as morning/midday meteorologist?
-Carey Coleman still came to KMTV in 1993, but instead of becoming chief meteorologist because Bevacqua’s still there, he becomes their new morning/midday meteorologist upon Bob Cameron’s departure?
-Craig Koplein still comes to KMTV in 1994-95, but instead of becoming chief meteorologist, he becomes the weekend meteorologist when Massaro leaves?
-Ryan McPike still comes to KMTV in 2002, but instead of becoming chief meteorologist due to Bevacqua still being there, he starts out as the weekend meteorologist. But in 2006, he moves to weekday mornings and midday which he continues to do today?
-Jennifer Zeppelin still came to KMTV in 2014, but due to Bevacqua still being there, doesn’t become chief meteorologist? Instead, she does the weather on weekends?
-Loretta Carroll wasn’t suddenly dropped from KMTV’s weeknight newscasts in 2001? Instead, she stayed for several more years? So from 2001 to 2006, Carroll and Greg Peterson co-anchored the 5:00, 6:00 and 10:00 newscasts? She leaves in 2010 by choice? So for 2 years, she is co-anchors with Craig Nigrelli?
-KMTV still carries both “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel of Fortune” today?
-KMTV kept Al Vanik as their voiceover over the years like how WOWT has with Charlie Van Dyke today and how KETV did with Ed O’Brien for many years until 2013?
-All stations adopted an “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mentality, which leads to KMTV still calling their newscasts NewsCenter 3, WOWT still calling their newscasts Action News, but they all include their respective call letters in their newscast brandings? So to this day, KMTV’s newscasts are called KMTV NewsCenter 3, WOWT’s are called WOWT 6 Action News, KETV’s are still KETV NewsWatch 7 (which they already are) and KPTM’s are KPTM Fox 42 News?
-All stations still using the logos they first adopted in the 80's (except WOWT)? KMTV still using the “3” logo they first adopted in 1986, but place it in a blue box with the CBS eye logo in the middle left? WOWT still using the “6” logo they first adopted in 1991-92? KETV still using the same Circle 7 logo they first adopted in the early 80’s and still display it in yellow with blue inside? KPTM still using the “42” logo from when they first signed on in 1986, but instead of it being orange with lines running through it, it’s white and inside an orange box with no lines running through it?

I’m not quoting that because that is a wall of text, but any company would be insane not to update their logo since the 80s.

Does that include NBC? They haven't changed their Peacock logo since the 80's. What about CBS? They're still using the same Eye logo they've been using for decades now. Or ABC? They still have the same ABC logo they've been using since at least the 70's.

Or what about WPVI in Philadelphia? They're still using the same "6" logo they first adopted back in the late 60's. Not to mention they're still using the same theme music they've had since the 70's–"Move Closer To Your World". And they're still calling their newscasts Action News after 45+ years.

Are they insane?

I hate to break in on this love fest that some have with the newscasters especially the guys with man crushes on Rusty. A guy I know that lives by Louisville says that he caught on video the tornado that went through there a few weeks back from start to finish. He looks at the TV and WOWT is reporting the tornado like its right in the middle of happening even though its long gone. He calls the station up and gets Rusty on the phone and he says "Hey the tornado is long over but I got it on video do you want it?" Rusty says no I don't want it and you need to get off then phone and take cover. My buddy tells Rusty the storm has passed out here but anyway I got it on video from start to finish so I'll send it to you. Rusty tells my friend he don't care about the video go take cover and hangs up. Can you say FAKE WEATHER FORECASTS?

I have seen Bill Ranby pull this stunt a few times too. He will be on the TV saying that the front end of the storm should just about be hitting Chalco Hills in Millard now and the storm front actually passed through 5 minutes ago.

Caught some FAKE NEWS CNN today. They were reporting that sunk Duck Boat in Branson had just got pulled out of the Missouri River

I wouldn't lift a finger calling the station. Either I'm out chasing, in the bear's cage trying not to get killed, or I'm at home with my pundit cap on. Got nothing against Lord Rusty, but J. Zep is my girl.

For as much as each station pays for their SuperDuperWhopperDoppler, it's going to be right even when it's wrong.

Tonight on the 6PM KETV news they reported that it turns out Scott Frost's 14 championship rings were not stolen and he had found them in his garbage. They said it 2 different times. Later they end the broadcast saying they had made a mistake and the rings were found in Scott Frost's garage not his garbage. :hammer:

This happens when either 1. The reporter is his own editor or 2. There is no editor.

Agreed...twenty years ago, this would have been reported differently and we'd have heard the final version and that's it.

Some Fake News sources were reporting at one time that the thief had posted a pair of Frost's stolen Oregon Duck green Michael Jordans on Craigslist in Lincoln. That story was eventually changed when someone checked the photo of the shoes on Craigslist and found out it was taken off the net and the shoes were not even Frosts. It turned out some fool was spoofing Husker fans!

Calling a source "Fake News" does nothing more than lower your own credibility, in my opinion. It just gives you an excuse to put on your blinders and presume certain information sources are always false without regard to the verifiable truth from many other sources or from your own observation.
In this case the story really was untrue, but why pre-qualify it by calling it "fake news"? Credible sources issue corrections when warranted.

Too many news sources were running around fueling that Craigslist story. News sources that are supposed to be professionals. All any idiot had to do was check out the source of that pic with a quick internet search or a little bit of investigation. They were lazy and weak and they were pretending to be reporters. No two bit correction issued later can undue that lack of professionalism. That is why they are fake news all day long.

There is a likely a threshold at which a news source could be called “fake news” for reporting things that can easily be proven to be untrue. A low percentage of their non-editorial reporting being false probably means they should not be called “fake news.” Much better just to say they’re wrong on a particular story than to automatically tag the whole organization as “fake news” unless they have crossed that threshold. It’s still a stupid, over-used politically-motivated tactic.

Not specific to this case, but how many instances of.... poor research/biased/sloppy/misrepresented information in stories... should it take for a consumer of the media to dismiss that source as uncredible, or "fake news"?

That story was eventually changed when someone checked the photo of the shoes on Craigslist and found out it was taken off the net and the shoes were not even Frosts. It turned out some fool was spoofing Husker fans!
Calling a source "Fake News" does nothing more than lower your own credibility, in my opinion. It just gives you an excuse to put on your blinders and presume certain information sources are always false without regard to the verifiable truth from many other sources or from your own observation.
Even a blind pig finds an acorn now and again. My default stance is to ignore enything that comes out of their mouths, and pay attention to the video, the radar, or other visuals.

Even if you could determine the number of instances it should take, it’s still best to avoid characterizing news or sources as “fake news” and instead just state the evidence and proof that makes the news false. That’s the point I originally intended to make.

The by product of family multiplication.. At least, seemingly, KETV is being flexible so as to not lose additional on air talent...
