2018 Fall Color Thread
I'm trying to remember the perfect recipe, isn't it late summer rain with a middl October freeze?
So far the precipitation is doing its job, now we just need a good freeze next month.
Looking forward to nice color this year.

Re: 2018 Fall Color Thread
There is a single Silver Maple within view from my house that was less than 5% into it's thing about a week ago. That's the earliest change I've noticed. Approximately within the last 7-10 days, shadows have become noticeably longer and the sun noticeably at a lower angle. I know we revolve around the sun at a constant rate, but at least to me, the "noticeability" happens pretty abruptly every year around the very end of August.
Don't know if its just me, but every year right around the end of August there's always that very first day I notice the last bits of summer waning. That first day for me was probably last Friday or so. These last two days have shown that fall is ready to make itself known. I'm at bliss, save a few 80 some% days still left to come.
Anyway, the changing of color is a clear indication that we all know and love. I can't wait for the peak.

We have the agreed upon dates for our seasons and then we have the somewhat grim reality that for 5 months of the year here it is really bad weather.Busguy2010 wrote: Sat Sep 08, 2018 1:21 am Don't know if its just me, but every year right around the end of August there's always that very first day I notice the last bits of summer waning. Fall in Nebraska begins the 2nd week of September and ends on Halloween. Fall is less then 2 months long so enjoy it while you can.
Winter in Nebraska starts November 1rst and ends March 31rst. The ugly truth in Nebraska is that Winter last 5 months!
Spring in Nebraska is from April 1rst to May 31rst.
Summer here is from June 1rst to Sept 7th.

USDA Forest Service wrote:A late spring, or a severe summer drought, can delay the onset of fall color by a few weeks. A warm period during fall will also lower the intensity of autumn colors. A warm wet spring, favorable summer weather, and warm sunny fall days with cool nights should produce the most brilliant autumn colors.

Re: 2018 Fall Color Thread
I don't quite have my chart and forecast ready for this year. Taking the information I posted in the last post and also last year, I am rebuilding my fall color weather chart with some different information.
As far as 2018:
Spring was warm and dry. April started out cold and we had a high of only 33 on April 15, we hit 85 by the end of the month. The heat continued in to May when we hit 100 and 101 on consecutive days May 26 and 27. As far as precip., we had only 2.24" combined for the two months, 7.70 is the average so we were almost five and a half inches short this spring.
This summer has been way wetter than average. We had 19.63 inches in June, July, and Aug.
So far September seems fairly normal, its only the 10th, we are halfway to our rainfall for the month. Our average low so far this month is 65 and we have had a few days with lows in the 50's, the lowest of which was yesterday at 52.

Re: 2018 Fall Color Thread
Not really any "Fall Colors" yet (other than the occasional stressed out tree), but the green definitely has that yellow tint if you look out over a group of trees. It won't be much longer until the first trees start to turn.

Re: 2018 Fall Color Thread
I added October 2nd as the first day of fall color for 2018 on my spreadsheet.
Not much color ion town, but get out of Omaha and there is a lot more. In town I am mostly seeing Locust and Ash trees.
Here is one from Lake Manawa on Friday.

Some good color downtown this morning. Lots of reds and yellows around Mary Mags and the federal courthouse.

Re: 2018 Fall Color Thread
Thanks. I purchased a 600mm lens over the summer and I have been playing with it, trying to compress the scene in photos like this. I was out of town 10/19 thru 10/29 so I missed a few opportunities, and I wish I had a little more time before the leaves fell off.

Re: 2018 Fall Color Thread
Nice tree and smoke reflection. I'm guessing that is the Louisville plant smokestacks and that pic is taken somewhere around Cedar Creek. It could be the Fremont power plant too.

I think it is the east side of Lake Manawa, looking south. Mid American power plant in the distance.

Smokestacks are too close together to be Manawa. I am guessing Camp Gifford / Gifford Farm by Fontanel Forest?

Re: 2018 Fall Color Thread
I guess I am not familiar with the Boundaries of Gifford Farm and Fontanel Forest. If you look at Google Earth, I assume you took this by the Canoes? I always assumed Gifford Farm was the land east of the tracks and Fontanel Forest was west of the tracks. Is part of the flat land east of the tracks Fontanel Forest?

Yes, the canoe rack would be to the left of the image above.
IIAC the Gifford/Fontenelle boundary runs to the left of the trail that leads off east and eventually south around the Great Marsh.

Did anyone get a good pic of the sunset tonight? It seemed like it lasted 30 minutes...
