Okay. That is a good response and I agree. Penalties have been KILLING this team the past 2 games.. Not playing the 1st game vs Akron really put them behind the 8 ball too imo..mrsticka wrote: Sat Sep 15, 2018 11:09 pmI didn't say anything about firing anyone, especially Frost. I am excited about having Scott Frost as the NU head football coach and I am confident he is the right guy to get Husker football turned around.. But it’ll take some time and it is a process. Today, against a good Troy team, Frost had to start back up, walk on QB in Chubb.. and despite that, the Huskers were still competitive and if they had cleaned up the turnover area, could have won this game..
Nice job by the NU coaching staff in coaching up Chubb. I believe, despite the 0-2 start, NU football is headed in the right direction. NOBODY thought this would be easy- especially coming off a 4-8 season..and it doesn’t get any easier this coming Saturday because NU now has to travel to Ann Arbor to play a good Michigan football team.. Hopefully Martinez can play. He gives NU a punchers chance.. But don’t be surprised if NU starts 0-3 for 2018.. I’m hoping for the big time win next Saturday at the Big House.. But I also realize this is a process.. and that Coach Frost will have to take multiple lumps before the team starts to turn around and reward the fan base with consistent winning football...

Re: Nebraska Football 2018
Right, I know Troy is good, but they are still on of our "cupcakes", one of the teams that were scheduled for an "easy" win. Whatever "good" qualifies as won't be sorted out til the season is over. The truth of the matter is college football is very unpredictable, and we don't know what will happen, and at this point we really don't know anything. This loss certainly isn't reassuring.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Sat Sep 15, 2018 10:59 pm Um.. Remember, Troy was 11-2 last year and NO slouch. They’re a talented college football team. Ciao..LiO...Peace
When I look at the rest of the schedule, I see the easier opponents and the harder opponents. After the start this year, I think the Skers are going to lose all four of those harder games (Wisconsin, Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State). The start hasn't shown me much to believe that they're better than the easier opponents (Northwestern, Illinois, Purdue, Minnesota, Iowa), so those games could be a push. My expectations at the beginning of the year weren't high, but I thought it would be better than it is.
I mostly think its an unfortunate start. I honestly believe if they didn't miss the first game, they'd be 3-0. At 3-0, each game means more, so to lose the games they're supposed to win is unfortunate. Doesn't mean I'm gonna stop watching, I'm just not so optimistic like I was.
Other thing is I'll still hold out some hope since Big Ten play hasn't started yet. Even if they lose to Michigan, then Wisconsin, they can still run the table in the remaining west games, hope Wisconsin loses one they shouldn't and go to the championship. So far the Big Ten as a whole has looked pretty underwhelming, so that's good as far as conference stuff goes.

I pretty much agree..BUT.. I don’t believe anyone thought Troy was a cupcake “easy” win. They’re a good team. And in 2017, Troy would have DUSTED Mike Reilly and the Huskers. Colorado was no slouch either. They have talent.. Although they had a down 2017 season..
I believe NU suffered from not playing that 1st game vs Akron.. From what I’ve seen thus far, this team could have been 2-1 or 3-0 going into the Big House this Saturday.. Martinez getting hurt also cost the Huskers in a big way against a quality Troy team.. I think if Martinez plays vs Michigan, NU has a punchers chance.. But as I stated in my response to mrsticka, don’t be surprised if the Huskers start 0-3 this season.. But I’ll also say- don’t be discouraged either.. because under coach Frost I firmly believe this team is headed in the right direction and will eventually right the ship..
We just all need to be patient...

Re: Nebraska Football 2018
I think when they scheduled Troy a number of years ago, they didn't expect them to be good. 5 or so years ago, they might have thought "That'll be cute for the both of our teams, lets do it". Nebraska gets a sort of better cupcake (or what was intended to be a cupcake) win and Troy gets to show what it's got vs a better opponent. It didn't end up that way though.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Sun Sep 16, 2018 12:25 amGood response. I expect nothing less from you..

I think group of 5 teams are getting way better. They are "upsetting" power 5 teams all over the place. The game of football is simple, except the media blows up when #12 beats #9 and stays pretty quiet when #6 gets beat by a group of 5 team. I think college football is a way more level playing field than it was and that's why big teams are scheduling other big teams out of conference. If you lose to another big team, it won't look as bad as if you lose to a team you were definitely supposed to beat.

Settle down Cowboy, no need to go into attack mode (despite you saying to the contrary). Mrsticka is stating a fact,an unfortunate fact for Husker fans, but one none the less, and doesn't need to provide a "Solution" as that's not what she's paid for. Others are paid in the millions to do that.
This game proved that the problems with the Husker program run very very deep, and were compounded by:
1. Losing a starting QB after the first game
2. Losing any creditable backup QB before the year start (I think this might have been mismanaged, but Gebbia might have had a foot out the door anyways, hard to tell).
3. A still somewhat inexperienced coach who seems like he still doesn't know all the pieces he has, and needs to settle down on the gung ho move move move attitude (this will work later on, but right now, it doesn't and he needs to recognize that). Sadly Frost needs to grow, and grow quickly if he is going to survive and not turn into a John Blake from Oklahoma years.
4. Fragile mentality of players, still seem timid...outside of the Defensive line which has been a lone bright spot in all of this mess. They're still making stupid penalties (one of which probably cost you the Colorado game)
5. Freaky turnovers that need to be addressed, this might tie into #4.
6. WOW, the O-Line regressed from game 1 to game 2. What happened? Is this the norm, or an aberration?
7. A secondary that is still a porous as any Husker fans have seen in recent memory.
Side point:
Troy is NOT the same team that went 11-2 last year. They lost a bit of talent with graduation last year, and while they still have a good coach, they should not have beaten Nebraska at home. If they cannot beat Troy, they're facing a very tough go of winning any games this year.I remember one game many years ago I was dragged to, Nebraska vs Colorado when Dan Hawkins was still a coach. Nebraska won and Colorado finished 2 and 10, and Nebraska fans were chanting "2 and 10, 2 and 10"; they might hear that this year again if this team doesn't grow up fast.

One local sports talk radio station has a Husker football post game call in show called “Big Red Overreaction”.. I think some NU fans are overreacting to this 0-2 start quite a bit.. I do want to address a couple of things from your post-
Why did NU lose this game? A combination of bad penalties and turnovers (one pass interference penalty on the Huskers was completely bogus and aided Troy in their TD drive in the 2nd half), bad offensive line play, starting a walk on QB that would have been 3rd string had Gebbia not bailed, and playing a quality opponent..
I also believe not playing that 1st game vs Akron has affected the Huskers start this year. I think had they played Akron and defeated them, that would have possibly carried over into the Colorado game and might have enhanced their chances of starting 2-0 before leading into the Troy game. But oh well..
Scott Frost will be fine. You’re correct in pointing out he is a bit of an inexperienced head coach.. But I believe this is a better coached football team. I can see it in the way the team plays and hustles. To me, they’re passing the eye test.. But you said it- this was a 4-8 team last year.. and when a culture has developed in which your football program has consistently been playing at a mediocre level for more than a decade, it takes time to wash that stink off. Troy was an 11-2 team last year. They play with a mindset in which they expect to win.. Whether it’s in Lincoln or anywhere else. So it didn’t surprise me at all they beat the Huskers in Lincoln.. NU will likely be 0-3 after next Saturday’s game in Ann Arbor..
But, I believe if Adrian Taylor Martinez plays the Michigan game, it gives the Huskers a punchers chance to win. I think that game will be closer than a lot of people might think...

As for the referees, they were bad on both sides. Nebraska had a fumble, which should have been Troy's ball if I recall correctly. They didn't play a part in any shape or form, which is rare in today's game.
As for fans overreacting, that's what they do. They're fanatics. The day of the loss people get fiesty (as seen in this thread), and defensive towards their team (also seen in this thread). Cooler heads prevail the days after, so I put little stock in a sports radioshow right after the game in terms of a true pulse.
Scott will be fine, if he continues to grow as a coach. If he listens to his mentor, who had to do some growing of his own in his time. If not, John Blake Nebraska version is here.

You do realize though, it’s not really a fair comparison. John Blake, prior to attaining the head coaching job at OU, was never a head coach anywhere.. Nor was he even a defensive coordinator. He was a position coach only.. He was clearly in over his head when he got the head coaching gig in 1996 at OU.. Scott Frost had, clearly, a much better track record to NU- He was the offensive coordinator at Oregon for three season prior to becoming the successful head coach at UCF for 2 seasons before being hired as NU head coach.. After 2 games, I don’t get the slightest perception at all that Frost is in over his head.. John Blake? That was a different animal from the jump..
The only similarity between Blake and Frost is that they are former players who the became head coaches at their schools. That’s it. So like I said, given that, I see where you’re coming from.. Sort of..
Shoot, even Pelini held at least a defense coordinator position before being hired as NU head coach..
OU hiring Blake was a knuckheaded decision to say the least. He’s a decent enough position coach, that’s about it...

Re: Nebraska Football 2018
The John Blake reference is made strictly in the sense of a former player coming back to coach his alma mater and not...doing so well. I am fully aware of his history. Regardless of Frost's past experience, unfortunately there is still a possibility of a "Blake" like outcome, not likely, but yesterday's game smelled of it.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Sun Sep 16, 2018 1:34 pmI've noticed this is the 2nd time you’ve referenced John Blake and his 3 year failure as Oklahoma Head Coach in the same sentence insinuating a possible similar path for Scott Frost..
Troy is NOT the same team that went 11-2 last year. They lost a bit of talent with graduation last year, and while they still have a good coach, they should not have beaten Nebraska at home. If they cannot beat..
One local sports talk radio station has a Husker football post game call in show called “Big Red Overraction”..
Ciao..LiO...Peace

I don’t get that sense or “smell” as you call it. Especially since it’s one game and only Scott’s 2nd in his first season. Frost had to coach the game against a quality opponent with a back up walk on QB.. Before this season started, I looked at the schedule and thought 6 wins was going to be tough. I still think it’s attainable.. But I’ll give him more of a body of work before I compare him to 3 years of John Blake failure vs 2 games of Frost not doing so well at 0-2..MadMartin8 wrote: Sun Sep 16, 2018 1:52 pmThe John Blake reference is made strictly in the sense of a former player coming back to coach his alma mater and not...doing so well. It looks like Nebraska was so desperate for a win they actually went and set up a game with a cupcake team from Florida now. That don't impress me much. Lets just hope Nebraska can beat this cupcake team because were finding that some of the cupcakes are taking it to us these days. I watched the whole Troy game again on Utube Wednesday night and it was no fluke that Nebraska fell to this cupcake team. It was clearly obvious that Troy had a much better quarterback then Nebraska and Troy's running backs were just as good as Nebraska's mediocre Rbs were. As for kickers it was not even close as Troy has a great kicker and Nebraska's kicker is below average. The Nebraska defense is a joke. I don't give a hoot about the black shirt nonsense but just the same the fact that 7 or 8 of Nebraska's defensive players have been given black shirts is preposterous. That Nebraska defense is the same lousy rotten defense we saw for the last few years. Nothing has been fixed if its even possible with this talent. Michigan is favored by 17 points and they could win by twice that. We got no hope other then Martinez. The current offense has no hope if Bunch starts. Finally am I the only one that is uncomfortable with the lame shoddy quarterback hand offs and fakes in the Troy game. Those hand offs and fakes in the Troy game were so obvious they were not fooling anyone. I know Bunch is a freshman but wow he looked like a high school quarterback which is unacceptable at the college level.

Re: Nebraska Football 2018
I'm surprised they sacrificed their bye. On one hand, yes, it's positive to expect to go to the championship game and not schedule a game for December 1st... On another hand, wouldn't it be better to get the rest if they really expect to make a run to the championship game? On the third hand, BCU is an FCS team so maybe for what it's worth, it'll be kind of a bye. On the final hand, if you really expected to make it to the championship game, wouldn't you just let that 12th game go? So what I really think they are striving for is to become bowl eligible, with the "expectation" to make it to the championship game... in other words, it's "coach speak", that in all honesty could motivate the team to play better. It doesn't seem too realistic to me at this point.GrandpaaSmucker wrote: Thu Sep 20, 2018 7:16 pm It looks like Nebraska was so desperate for a win they actually went and set up a game with a cupcake team from Florida now. On blackshirts, I totally agree with you. They shouldn't hand those out until the players have proven their worth consistently over the course of several games.
At this point, I see two guaranteed wins left on the schedule: BCU and Illinois. Tossups are Purdue, Minnesota, Northwestern, Iowa, Maybe Michigan State. I won't touch the rest. My pessimistic opinion on the final record is 3-9. The very most optimistic I can get is 6-6. My actual opinion is 4-8.

Already the Fake News is hyping up that Jim Harbaugh ran the score up on Nebraska. Don't buy into it. JIm Harbaugh could of pounded us 99 to nothing if he had wanted to. It is not Michigan"s fault that 10 years and more of bad recruiting has left Nebraska a mess. Its not Scott Frost's fault either. It is what it is.mrsticka wrote: Sat Sep 22, 2018 3:11 pm Well, that was a disaster. A 56-10 loss and 0-3 for the first time since I don't even know.

Tough situation for Frost. He really needs an increase in talent. He talks about players not 'buying in'. The answer might be to bench players and dumb down schemes. But sacrificing this season could really hurt recruiting and set them up for more failure next season. At this point, his coaching momentum is gone.
It's time for this staff to start showing something though.

Re: Nebraska Football 2018
I still think the boys would be 3-1 at this point had the first game not been cancelled. I also think they would have lost just as badly today as they did.
Maybe the benefit of the reality is at least us fan's hopes weren't gotten up by winning early, only to be whooped in our first tough conference game.
I didn't post a prediction because I didn't know just how bad it would be. I kinda thought it would be 45-14 with the Skers having an outside chance of coming back after halftime. But obviously it was a bloodbath you can only compare to a couple other games in Husker history... But this time it didn't bother me because they hadn't been winning and I knew it would be bad to some degree. The team as a whole is seeing the reality of just how bad it is, but I believe Scott Frost does know what he's doing and will figure it out.
My expectations for the season were never that high, and now they're low, but that'll be okay. Here's to hoping they can pull off a win next week!

Jeesh that was depressing!
They were saying that it was the worst Nebraska first half in history and the worst loss since some date back in the 1800s or something.
However, to put things into perspective ...

The 1916 Cumberland vs. Georgia Tech football game was the worst defeat in NCAA history, with Georgia Tech winning 222–0. In more recent years, in 2003, Rockford University beat Trinity College 105-0.

A lot of people saw that 12-0 that UCF put up last year, including showing a lot of balz in beating Memphis and Auburn, and figured the same for NU this year.
NU beats tOSU once in the next five years (or OU in either 2021 or 22) and Frost will get a blank check. I'm not worried, but again, they're not my team.

I agree 100%. Scott Frost jumped on a sinking ship and hopes to save it. The root of the problem is bad recruiting. Scott Frost's fortunes will be made or broke on his ability to fix the recruiting problem. If Frost is going to continue the nonsense of chasing hyped up 4 start athletes then this will not go well for Scott. If Frost can spot talent and potential on his own then and only then will he be able to stop the ship from going down.Louie wrote: Mon Sep 24, 2018 12:47 pm Let’s just have patience. I dunno. I do agree that recruiting is a huge issue, however, I believe the problem is that we aren’t getting enough 4 stars. I mean rosters on successful teams of late are absolutely loaded with 2nd and 3rd string players being 4 star recruits. We just don’t have depth of high caliber athletes. Will he be able to bring them? I don’t know. But I’ll give him all the time he wants to try. We will never get a coaching opportunity like this again.GrandpaaSmucker wrote: Mon Sep 24, 2018 2:16 pmI agree 100%. Scott Frost jumped on a sinking ship and hopes to save it. We are not going to get 4 star recruits if the team is dysfunctional. If you were a 4 start QB and could go play at ND or tOSU and get on TV, and big name bowl games, why go to NU? We have to start recruiting what we can get. We also have to realize that the ship has sailed for walk ons. Anyone good enough to walk on and have some kind of impact right away (even as a 3rd string player) will be good enough to get a scholarship elsewhere.Louie wrote: Mon Sep 24, 2018 7:59 pmI dunno. You can't coach up that defense. They just don't have the talent and all the coaching in the world will never change that. That defense couldn't shut down Creighton Prep! Simply stated we are screwed and not only will we not be playing in any Bowl Games but we are becoming a laughing stock around the country. Recruiting 4 stars is only going to get tougher even with Scott Frost.Louie wrote: Tue Sep 25, 2018 8:33 pm He can get 4 stars, he already has. Just needs a ton more. I don’t disagree. I’m just saying that’s all that he can really do with this season.

Re: Nebraska Football 2018
All I know is right now, Bethune Cookman (October 27th) looks like the only winnable game on the NU schedule..
We’ll see if they can put together a complete and competitive game against Purdue this Saturday...

BG is pretty good team and they are going to want Nebraska's money and scalp. The team that makes Nebraska go 0-12 instead of the team that Nebraska beat to go 1-11.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Wed Sep 26, 2018 12:25 pm All I know is right now, Bethune Cookman (October 27th) looks like the only winnable game on the NU schedule..

Am I the only one getting the feeling from everything we are hearing that many of the players on Nebraska have gave up on Scott Frost already and are becoming royal pains in the neck
We fired Riley and we may have to fire a couple players also.

Its totally believable that some of the players that were here for Riley aren't buying in. I vaguely recall Scott alluding to that either after last game or the one before. Did you hear anything further on that?GrandpaaSmucker wrote: Fri Sep 28, 2018 12:21 pm Am I the only one getting the feeling from everything we are hearing that many of the players on Nebraska have gave up on Scott Frost already and are becoming royal pains in the neckWe fired Riley and we may have to fire a couple players also.

The coaches have not through any players under the bus but they are working towards it. Stories have circulated of players skipping the healthy meals provided for the players and opting for junk food. Stories of players skipping meetings. Stories of players not liking the way Frost is coaching.Busguy2010 wrote: Fri Sep 28, 2018 4:43 pmIts totally believable that some of the players that were here for Riley aren't buying in. As long as these players aren't the ones he recruited then alright. Its part of the change, some players aren't going to like it, it might be "too hard" for some, but as we lose those ones, I think it'll improve. Question is which Riley recruits is he starting over his and for what reasons. I'm sure he knows the answers to those questions, so I won't doubt his process. Not this year, as hard as it may become.GrandpaaSmucker wrote: Fri Sep 28, 2018 7:03 pm The coaches have not through any players under the bus but they are working towards it.
