New/Additional OMA Air Service

Post by Ryan Air »

Thought I’d start two new topics since Omaha Eppley Airfield is likely to have major announcements and construction very soon- that way it’s easier to discuss air service vs. actual OMA/OAA stuff.

First up: There is talk on other forums (Airliners) of Southwest adding another flight to DCA from OMA. Also, rumors of LGA and BNA.

Indeed it is. WN and AA must have AUS screwed down--on the surface, AUS should have more freqs than SAT.

I swear I read somebody posting this already, but I can’t find it.

WN LAX-OMA service is year-round and no longer seasonal. I apologize if somebody already posted this.

A second daily is overdue, but on the DCA end, it's not about filling the plane, it's about wrangling scarce gate space. I'd prefer to fly Southwest, but I'd have to plan months in advance. They always seem to be full. I wish they could get some gate space at Dulles for a non-stop. I hate having to change planes for a 990 mile flight.

BWI would be more likely. Would you take the BWI and drive or fly with a connection into DCA?

It's a 60+ mile drive between the two, and you can't count on a smooth ride. One highway incident, and there are many, could turn the trip into a nightmare. Not many people who live in the Northern Va. suburbs would fly out of BWI unless the other two airports were totally booked for their preferred flight. It's just not convenient. On the plus side, I can take public transportation between the two, but it's a slow go. Time wise, it's generally better to suck it up and change planes at Chicago/Midway.

Now if they would only work on their on-time performance for that route! I swear the get-to-Eppley to land-at-Newark time is often less when you fly Southwest and change planes than the nonstop with Untied!

I don't know if it's United or Newark or both, but I've been commuting to New York via these flights, every week for the past 2 months and have seen the return flight cancelled entirely, no less than 4 times. The slightest chance of rain, and they cancel the Omaha flight hours before hand. It's gotten so bad, I decided to use another airline through Minneapolis for the return flights, with a 2 hour layover, so I have a better chance of returning the same day (ended up overnight in no less than 3 different airports as well).

It is always worse in the summer and NYC weather was really bad the past 1-2 months. Tons of storms. The early morning 6am flight EWR-OMA is rarely delayed or cancelled from my experience so I recommend taking that flight during thunderstorm season. The afternoon EWR-OMA flight has delay and cancellation issues, mostly storm related. United is adding a 3rd daily EWR-OMA flight starting next week so that should help with more options. Chose the morning or middle day flight and unless something crazy weather wise is going on, you shouldn't have issues making it home the same day!

American Airlines has recently increased their service to LAX to 2X daily, with both flights utilizing the 76 seat E-175. The second flight looks to start sometime in early November (previously loaded into their schedule) and was extended to all dates available for sale in 2019 last night. The prices for the second flight in 2019 are currently sky high, but should come down once their systems open up more inventory for sale.

The extra flight to Newark surprises me a little. It makes me wonder if there are more fliers from Omaha taking international flights out of Newark or perhaps there's an increase in business between Omaha and NYC?

The airline, which currently operates two nonstop flights to and from Newark Liberty International Airport, will begin flying three daily nonstop flights. Newark, New Jersey, is just outside New York City.

The flights will operate year-round and will begin March 31; they are available for booking as of Monday, a United spokesman said.

The Omaha-to-Newark flights will be flown on two-class large regional jets.

Along with the Omaha expansion, the airline also announced on Monday expanded nonstop service from Newark to Richmond, Virginia; Kansas City, Missouri; St. Louis; and Detroit, calling those markets “key business destinations.”
Says key business destination, but I am sure it is a combination of business, leisure and international travel.

Just by a quick glance it looks like the new United schedule is 6AM, 12:30 and 5:30. They had been running a 12:30 and 6:10 schedule. Morning flight should do well.

Southwest Airlines will begin flying a daily nonstop flight from Omaha's Eppley Airfield to San Diego's international airport.

Southwest also will begin seasonal nonstop service between Omaha and Nashville. That flight will fly only on Sundays, seasonally.

The two additions to Southwest's lineup will mean the airline will fly 12 nonstop destinations from Omaha. It flies daily nonstops to Chicago-Midway, Dallas-Love, Denver, Houston-Hobby, Las Vegas, Los Angeles-LAX, Phoenix, St. Louis and Washington-Reagan. It also flies seasonal nonstops to Orlando.

In the last five years, Southwest has more than doubled its number of nonstop destinations from Omaha, said Steve McCoy, the airport's manager for airline affairs.

Southwest uses 1x per week service to test a market. Typically this service is on a Saturday but destinations that have a high of weekend only travel, like Nashville, they run these text flights on 1x per week on Sunday instead of Saturdays. If the flights are successful, they go to daily. If they are not successful, they typically get dropped.

What the article doesn't mention is Southwest will drop it's daily service to Orlando next summer that they have ran for past several years. It goes to weekend only.

Also, Phoenix gets reduces from 2x daily last summer to 1x daily this summer. Basically the second phoenix flight moves to San Diego instead. The Orlando flight is just a cut. Everything else is similar.

This reminds me of the F9 service to Austin/San Antonio. I have to assume that if they're marketing this for round-trip traffic, they're selling OMA-BNA-STL-OMA or reverse (you can replace STL with MDW) where one of your legs will be non-stop.

I like Nashville, but I don't want to spend eight days there waiting for my flight back--Nashville isn't Walt Disney World or the Caribbean where they might be able to get away with it. And the timing of the flights isn't conducive for people wanting to make a day-trip to OMA or BNA. So, who is WN's customer? The only thing I can think of is that one or more corporate clients made noises that they'd be interested in sending 100+ employees from BNA to OMA or vice versa once a week. I can't think who that'd be, but if that's the case, why seasonal?

Try this idea. You fly to Nashville with a stop in Chicago or St. Louis BUT you fly home non stop. Cuts down the time on the return trip at least.

It was scheduled to be twice a week, now it is going to be 3x a week loaded on Allegiant website today. That must mean bookings are strong!

This is summer season service only, ends mid-August.

Along with a 3rd weekly Orlando flight, June and July will be upwards of 40%-50% more seats than last year. Note the percentage of total Eppley traffic on Allegiant is super small but at least it is something.
