Re: The Omaha World Herald
I've been a subscriber for over 30 years and am sad to see what is happening to papers everywhere. The World Herald was very slow to embrace the internet early on in the late 1990s and early 2000s when it started becoming ubiquitous. They were even "anti-internet" for the longest time.
First, it was 24/7 cable news, then it was online news followed by almost everyone carrying a smart phone with access to so much instantaneous news tailored to their individual liking that killed print media. By the time you pick-up printed material, it's not "news" anymore. It's still a good source for feature articles, local news, entertainment, sports stats, and archived news in a familiar format. I admit I don't sit down and read the printed OWH nearly as much as I used to, what little there is left to read.

Re: The Omaha World Herald
I was speaking with Coyote about this and the main thing I really appreciated with the print paper was the sport's sections and displaying the box scores all on one page. (Something you never get on the internet with scrolling or making the print very small) Unfortunately, even that is going away. I agree that feature articles they provide are still good sometimes, similar to magazines, but overall I think the idea of an everyday print paper is nearly gone.

I know I have mentioned it before, in the early days of eomaha, I was very critical of the OWH. Once I got to know the staff, the writers, the photographers, I had a completely different opinion. Their professionalism was really inspiring.
That said, as a photographer, friend of OWH staff, and OWH subscriber, I was really disappointed to log on to omaha.com this morning and see a photo taken with a dirty cell phone camera! WTH! I understand times are tough and you cant send a professional photographer to every event anymore. But seriously, teach your reporters how to clean off their cell phone cameras before they take a photo that will end up on the front page of omaha.com...

Re: The Omaha World Herald
I thought I'd chime in on the owh.
There are a number of issues at work here. First of course is that papers in general are having problems coping with declining subscribers, competing with new ways for advertisers to spend their money, the internet in general, and lots more.
In addition, there is the Warren Buffet issue. If you get a chance read Roger Lowenstein's biography. Warren likes the idea of a monopoly. He can raise ad rates & pretty much offer as little in the way of content as possible. That worked extremely well with the Buffalo News. Once the competition went bankrupt Buffett cut the News to the bone & people still had to subscribe. I doubt he's cut much at the advertising department. I don't blame him, He's greedy & that's what a capitalist is all about. Ask the shareholders how much they'd be willing to give up in the way of profits.
Now it seems that Warren has a problem. His monopolies aren't doing well and now he has to do something about it. So, enjoy the skinny paper & the cheap content. I'm sure they staff is a talented bunch, those that are left.
By me, the Detroit Free Press is a part of the USAToday family & it really shows. Once in a while there is a good in depth story but usually there's not much to read.

Berkshire owns pretty much every major newspaper in Nebraska. That's quite a control over printed news in the state.

I haven't read the book Bob mentioned, but hasn't Warren said in the past that he takes a hands-off approach to running the businesses Berkshire owns, trusting the individual company leaderships to make the detailed day-to-day decisions?

in general his plan is to stay hands off with two exceptions. One, profits get sent back to Omaha. Two, capital projects and acquisitions go through him.GetUrban wrote: Tue Sep 04, 2018 7:07 pm I haven't read the book Bob mentioned, but hasn't Warren said in the past that he takes a hands-off approach to running the businesses Berkshire owns, trusting the individual company leaderships to make the detailed day-to-day decisions?
When he first bought the Buffalo News he did take a very hands on approach for the first few years. After it became a cash cow he did back off.
He actually did try to buy the OWH but it wasn't for sale. That was in the 60s.

The paper is dead and we should all drop our subscriptions and cut and run. That is the story here. Warren Buffet is known for his ruthlessness and this will just set his mind on getting clear of the whole mess quickly once and for all. These employees are only speeding up their most certain demise. It can't be no party working down there after all those employees have been cut even though the paper was already paper thin and mostly full of ads and stories brought in from national publications.

Frankly, I haven’t subscribed in years. I read today’s edition in about 10 min. I can’t see getting back into a subscription.

Re: The Omaha World Herald
The lack of professionalism in the World Herald continued today on its trek of rapid decline as the boob Tom Shatel made Scott Frost a Dr now
The article said: " If he’s not 101 percent, according to NU’s team doctors and Dr. Frost, then Martinez shouldn’t set foot between the white lines."
https://www.omaha.com/huskers/football/ ... 6e9e1.html
On a positive note it was nice to see the front page article on the paper detailing the fact that it is absolutely asinine to say in one breath you want to fix up downtown and make people want to move down there in the next breath say you want to tear down a historic building to make a youth jail.

Is is maybe possibly most likely this joke of a paper in their last dying shiftless efforts to milk us subscribers have decided that these blown up obits make a good cheap way for them to fill a couple of pages and make it look like the paper actually has some info in it when it don't. That is probably what it is. If it looks like a duck and it quacks like a duck its a duck.Brad wrote: Tue Feb 05, 2019 8:54 pmDon't you pay per word or per line on those? Seems to be happening with lots of local newspapers. My mom still gets the argus leader out of sioux falls and she made the comment this past weekend that there is hardly in it most days - but she is 88 and still has it delivered. I guess it is not printed in Sioux Falls any more but in des moines so local news and sports is usually a day late. The other bad part is their website was recently redone and it is a horrible layout and barely kept up to date.damonhynes wrote: Wed Feb 06, 2019 3:25 am I'm watching the books for my mom now, with a line item for $32/mo for a newspaper so light a mature grackle could carry it off. When the World-Herald (foolishly) invested tens of millions of dollars on their new printing facility near the start of the century they built for much higher print capacity. We can all see how that has played out. Printing the Journal Star at their facilities will help offset that overcapacity.
I didn’t believe it even a few years ago, but I see print editions of newspapers going the way of the Dodo bird in less than 5 years. I can and do read my W-H online here in México. The cost is $1.99 per month for the daily edition. That is on top of my weekend print subscription. Of note, I used to be able to get a credit/extension on my print subscription for vacation suspensions of more than 7 days. Now that seems to be impossible.

For $41 a month I want Warren B. to bring it to me & read it to me & take it out to the recycling bin when I'm done listening to him read it. I also noticed that the single copy Sunday paper is $3.50. The Detroit News or Free Press is $2.00 a copy for Sunday. Does the OWH sunday edition include $1.50 in cash inside? Is there extra special sauce poured over it?
I saw this header on the web page for subscriptions for the owh:
Real. Fair. Accurate.
Real quick reading. Fairly light weight. Accurately overpriced.

Last year I paid around $145 / year for 7 day delivery and on line access. That expired in Dec and they would not match it. Best they would do was substantially more. I canceled and for the first time since 1985 I have not gotten at least a Sunday OWH delivered to me no matter where I lived. For the majority of that time it has been a 7 day subscription.damonhynes wrote: Mon Feb 11, 2019 4:10 pmLatest bill: $41/mo!damonhynes wrote: Wed Feb 06, 2019 3:25 am I'm watching the books for my mom now, with a line item for $32/mo for a newspaper so light a mature grackle could carry it off. You can get a digital + print subscription of the Wall Street Journal for $2 cheaper a month. And they're offering a 50% off promo for the first year.
No local news but you'll get substantially more national and international coverage.
