AAF to Omaha?
According to this article, the AAF, the new Pro football league, is looking at the possibility of expanding to Omaha in 2020, along with Des Moines and Oklahoma City.

They need to make it through this season first.

I agree..
But so much for the idea that the AAF wouldn’t work (or be in consideration to expand) in the Midwest.. Like into Omaha

But considering the conditions around here, they'd almost certainly need a heated field. Anybody got one of those?

They’re also considering Dayton OH, Columbus OH and Des Moines IA.. Most certainly if Omaha needed a heated field, so would these other locations, LOL.. And also, I consider this winter to be an anomaly for Omaha. This winter has easily been the worst and most miserable for at least the last 10 years. This year is the exception rather than the rule imo..Busguy2010 wrote: Thu Feb 28, 2019 8:58 pmAlso agree.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Thu Feb 28, 2019 8:07 pmI agree..

Like I said earlier this month, Omaha would be a great location for an AAF team. That Omaha is on the short list for consideration pretty much proves this to be true..
Of course, the league could fold before the end of April.. Meaning all of this talk would be pointless

I don’t think they will fold soon. They just got a new big infusion of money, and their TV ratings are pretty good. Now will they be around next year? The magic 8 ball says: “Unclear, try again later.”Omaha Cowboy wrote: Thu Feb 28, 2019 10:09 pm

I think it's still up in the air if they make it. They got the cash to survive this year but as we saw with the UFL, these things bleed cash. Ratings on TV are good (but I have not seen anywhere if the league is actually making money from TV rights). Attendance has been an issue though. Some of the games have been very sparsely attended.Padre wrote: Thu Feb 28, 2019 10:40 pmI don’t think they will fold soon. I don't think based on past statements that TD Ameritrade is an option. MECA and the NCAA have been resistant to something like this before the CWS.

Even the defunct league the Omaha Nighthawks played in (the UFL I believe) lasted consecutive seasons...nebugeater wrote: Tue Apr 02, 2019 3:35 pmI really thought they would get one year in.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Tue Apr 02, 2019 12:05 pmAnd Boom goes the dynamite.. Re: AAF to Omaha?
The people with the plan seemed to come into conflict with the man with the money. Seems like the whole thing may have been rushed, and they didn’t have everything they needed in place.
That said, I think Coyote is right. No NFL help, it makes things very hard.

The thing is, the AAF wanted to be the development league for the NFL without their acknowledgement. Well, the NFL already has a development league, it's called the NCAA.

Im not sure I agree with this anymore. I used to. But now, not so much..Padre wrote: Tue Apr 02, 2019 9:12 pm That said, I think Coyote is right. No NFL help, it makes things very hard.
We’ve already had a league that fed into the NFL with, supposed NFL support, called NFL Europe. That folded.. As did the XFL, the UFL and now the AAF.. I can even go back to the mid 80’s with the USFL (although this league was created to actually complete with the NFL)..
Again, ALL folded. My point is, after more than one generation worth of attempts, I just doubt there is any market anymore, anywhere for “minor league professional football”..
And why should there be? The “minor developmental league” for the NFL is NCAA Division I college football...
Proven time and time and time again...

I don't think the NFL will ever want to do that. For such little if any return, why open yourself for additional liability? With CTE and other issues I just don't think the NFL wants that kind of monetary exposure. Minor league football just won't work. And if history is a guide, minor league or even a 2nd full league won't either. AFL was the last one that really kind of did. Starting with the WFL, and all the ones that followed, have failed.

The logical part of me knows you’re right. But it still makes me sad. Yes, NCAA football is the NFL minor league, i agree with that as well. And I know I’m in the minority in this state, but other than hockey, I have very little interest in college sports. Never have.Greg S wrote: Wed Apr 03, 2019 8:51 am

However, I remember when Omaha got the Nighthawks. That was fun. Yes, they were not very good, and it was a crummy league, but it was Omaha’s team.
Omaha is simply not a pro sports town. There is not one pro team in city limits. The Storm Chasers were forced to the suburbs, by, you guessed it, college sports.
Yes, pro teams can be expensive, and they always seem to looking for a deal, or they leave. But they are also an amenity, something that attracts people. They can be an asset to a community.
Just some thoughts rambling in my head.

I am with you in terms of college sports. I have pretty much lost interest in the semipro "college" teams. I also don't think that pro sports are worth investing in. They have a long established track record of leaving once some other city gives them a new stadium and the old city is left with the costs of the stadium upkeep and the angry fans.
They are largely more cost than benefit. Be honest, name a large city that you would visit just for the pro team in that city and not some other feature. I can't think of one. There are ones that I would not visit even with the team, and there are ones that I would visit even if the team didn't exist.

My family goes to KC for one weekend every Fall to see a Chiefs game. We also do so for the Royals multiple times. We do also hit Worlds of Fun on one of the trips, but without the Royals we would only go to KC once a summer instead of 3-4 times on average.

I must of traveled to Kansas City over 100 times and without the Chiefs and Royals and Worlds of Fun it would be about 5 times total. Kansas City without the Chiefs and Royals and Worlds of Fun is just another Omaha.Greg S wrote: Wed Apr 03, 2019 3:03 pm My family goes to KC for one weekend every Fall to see a Chiefs game. We don't do Ikea but it is a huge draw down there. We do other things when we go but if the Royals and Chiefs weren't there, we definitely would not go more than once, maybe twice in some years.nebugeater wrote: Wed Apr 03, 2019 5:32 pmYou forgot IkeaGrandpaaSmucker wrote: Wed Apr 03, 2019 4:08 pmI must of traveled to Kansas City over 100 times and without the Chiefs and Royals and Worlds of Fun it would be about 5 times total. One thought: KC got their stadia and their teams before the resistance of the team owners to paying for their own stuff increased. They are also both home town team owned. I am not sure Omaha or any other city would get the same deals that KCMO got.Greg S wrote: Thu Apr 04, 2019 8:48 amWe don't do Ikea but it is a huge draw down there. I have been to Ikea a grand total of once. I can say without a doubt that it was way different than I expected.... in a good way. Went there to buy a specifoc items for our daughter that we had looked at one line and was surprised by a lot of things there.Greg S wrote: Thu Apr 04, 2019 8:48 amWe don't do Ikea but it is a huge draw down there.
