Question;

In terms of these Grain Elevators....is it even possible to bring them down? I mean...there are a lot of houses pretty close to them.

That is the building I was thinking of too! I don't see why they aren't putting them back up on the silos though if they are not tearing them down.

Driving by the Scoular elevator the other day, I had an idea. I know this would never happen, and if it did it would never last, but I thought it'd be neat to use as a base to hang a relief mural on each side, and have it lit up at night. To be honest, I actually think the thing is kind of neat, in a rustic days of yesteryear kind of way.

Oh and um, thread revival?

I hate that old Scoular building near 480. If it can't be torn down, I LOVE the idea of using the facade as an art piece of some kind.

Soooooo does anyone know if these are going to turn up somewhere anytime soon?

An idea for these elevators:

I noticed a while ago there appears to be some graffiti/artwork across the top (not sure if it is commissioned or not). I know in Montreal, they actually pay youth who would otherwise be tagging buildings to spraypaint the supports under highway overpasses. That might be a neat temporary display for this.

The elevator silos do have some potential for art.
The CB casinos can paint them up as piles of poker chips.
Monster Energy Drink people and Red bull can wrap them.
How about a huge pile of Oreo's and milk.
Or paint them like a cutaway with some missiles inside. That should make people stop texting for a moment.

So much that could be done with them.

An example of what the Grain Elevators could look like. Was there a brand of beer made in Omaha?

I like the Bunny how cute this would be they might even pay for it. But I think you need to take the drum and stick and make them neon so that they show up at night and perhaps move back and forth like the drum is in use. Use the Omaha ! logo from skinzfan's avatar. I am not good at this but something like this.

Does anyone know if they even use these elevators for anything at all? They could always tear them down.

They could but it would be very expensive to do so and I don't think anyone would have any financial incentive to do so. Its not like the land where they are is valuable for commercial or office space.

This elevator hasn't been used in 20+ years. Back in the day the Missouri Pacific Railroad had track here, but they are long gone. UP Took over the Missouri Pacific in 1982.

These might be the tallest structure road trippers see traveling through the state. It would be a travesty to see them go.

I've always thought they would make an excellent apartment project. That would be a lot of new residents in that area. Plus, right along the trail...appeal to the more active, etc. It's certainly possible. Someone contact Jay Noddle since it seems like he has a hand in everything these days. ;)

This thread is proof that many people have figured out something clever to do with them. However, nobody has the money to take on the project.

I'm not surprised that nobody wants to spend millions of dollars to do something clever with them.

FYI, the above photo is a student dormitory in Norway, complete with round rooms.

If the grain elevators were on The National Register of Historic Places or had been designated a local landmark, they would have already be torn down.

It's just funny what some people want to save and the other things they couldn't care less about.

They had a clear path to destroy the Specht and adjacent buildings, but apparently they thought the bad PR it would generate was not worth it and chose not too. Or as Mr. Omaha speculated, maybe they never planned to leave the burbs to build downtown anyway and were using their leverage to help OPAS get their way.

I know this is a thread revival, but I figure I shouldn't start a new one. But is there any way for this and Vinton St. silos to be redeveloped into something useful if it is too cost prohibitive to be torn down? The Scoular tower is on a huge swath of land with decent access, though it abuts the railroad. Can these be repurposed to something useful (it has a pretty nice view of downtown: http://www.placesthatwere.com/2016/07/a ... omaha.html)? Can that land be a future site for future infill development? Additionally, with a recent post about development next to trails, I just thought it would be neat, though unrealistic, to convert the grain elevator to residential units, keeping the silo's empty, but making the tops rooftop entertainment area for the tenants. It's crazy, I know, but can anything be done to these?

Here's an article highlighting some reuses of grain elevator/silos in other metros: https://www.citylab.com/design/2012/06/ ... tors/2293/

These really don’t bother me. If we can find a reuse for them or something great. Most Midwest cities have these and they add to Omaha’s “grit effect”. Maybe they can try painting some, especially the Scoular silo near 480.

Didn't they already put artwork on them to help them be less unsightly?

They don't really bother me that much -- maybe a tad. But, yes, those are kind of surprising near a downtown in a major city, as people to affiliate them with farms & small towns & rural environments -- of course.
I can get pushed out because I'm "too much" for some. Then, an observer of me comes suddenly swooping in to "fill my shoes." People are always more accepting of the new one, because their feathers aren't truly ruffled by them. (Yawn) I can count on it every time.

They had murals for a few years, but they were taken down like 3-4 years ago because no one wanted to pay for the upkeep. It's a shame, they looked super cool when they were painted.

I think they should convert it into a mini Times Square and hang digital billboard signs and use it for advertising purposes. I think it would look really cool at night all lit up with billboards and advertisements. Then they could sell advertising time on the building and make some money off of it. I’m talking specifically about the Scoular tower. Does anyone know who owns it?
