Two firm announcements for rumors we have been told for a while. The point-of-sale company servicing restaurants will put its Omaha office inside Central Park Plaza.
Boston-based Toast chose the red office towers that anchor the iconic image of the city from the Gene Leahy Mall. Eventually, its Omaha office will employ around 400 people.

Do you know if they are going to put a sign on the building? I miss having both towers having neon signs.

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Toast, the fastest-growing restaurant management platform in the U.S., today announced $115 million in Series D funding to accelerate investment in research and development, recruit new talent, and expand its market presence. The financing round, led by funds and accounts advised by T. Rowe Price Associates, Inc., with participation from new investor Tiger Global Management, LLC – as well as existing investors – values Toast at $1.4 billion.
To support the demand for its platform, Toast now employs more than 1,000 people in over 30 states and is actively hiring new talent to support its increasingly global footprint. New offices opened in Portland, Oregon and Omaha, Nebraska will support Toast’s growing workforce. When combined with Toast’s Boston headquarters and existing office in Dublin, Ireland, the company is well positioned to support thousands of employees in the future.

Toast sign now on south tower Central Park Plaza
Saw Toast sign on south tower today, these two buildings look the best with signs on them. As the tops of the buildings just make a great billboard to me. At one time years ago they said ConAgra and Norchem. Hopefully Toast will be successful in Omaha. I saw the sign during the day, I’m curious to see what it looks like after dark. Glad it’s up.

Pics?! What kind of company is Toast? I suppose I could research it myself...
I can get pushed out because I'm "too much" for some. Then, an observer of me comes suddenly swooping in to "fill my shoes." People are always more accepting of the new one, because their feathers aren't truly ruffled by them. (Yawn) I can count on it every time.

Think it’s some sort of software company, is from the Boston area. They recently opened a office location in Omaha, with help from Nebraska department of economic development. I wasn’t able to get a pic yesterday, I liked the sign.

Awesome! I looked them up after my original remark on here, and saw they were a software company. I love the fun, catchy names of some of these companies -- like "Toast." Dont they have a graphic logo that looks like a piece of toast?

Omaha beat out hip, tech-centric (and larger) cities like Denver, Phoenix, Salt Lake City and Portland when it landed the latest big investment in downtown.
Toast CEO Chris Comparato revealed the competition to KETV NewsWatch 7 in an interview Monday at the company's new Central Park Plaza office.
"I witnessed a tech ecosystem that was somewhat undiscovered and a hidden gem," Comparato said of his first visit to the city during site selection trips in 2016.
Since the announcement it chose Omaha in late 2017, the company has hired 230 people and has plans for more. Its total U.S. workforce is larger than 1,000.
"We're hiring every month, and will probably hire another 100 employees [in Omaha] in the course of the next year," said Comparato.
Toast's team from Boston regularly travels back and forth, logging many miles in the air and nights in Omaha hotels. They'll eventually benefit from a nearly $500 million overhaul at the metro's airport.
But there's one addition Comparato wants most: a direct flight from Logan International Airport to Eppley Airfield.
"It would enable some of the energy we're bringing," he said, adding, "there's nothing more important to me."

Re: Toast
That's really good competition that Omaha was able to beat out. I know that there are many people involved in these type of moves, but I am glad that we have a Chamber that is so active and successful in getting investment to the metro. Also, nice plug for Eppley. Maybe if we get a few more Boston based companies to open offices here, Liberty Mutual, IDG?iamjacobm wrote: Tue May 21, 2019 8:47 am https://www.ketv.com/article/toast-ceo- ... m/27535773

Re: Toast
General question:
How can a new to market company like Toast have 0 problems hiring talent in Omaha while our major corporations like Kiewit, HDR, TD Ameritrade, etc. constantly complain about hiring in Omaha being too difficult?
Off the top of my head:
-Kiewit expanding major offices in Denver and KC because they say they can't hire in Omaha
-MindMixer tech company that was in Mastercraft that moved to KC because they couldn't hire in Omaha
-ConAgra self explanatory
-UP and TDA referenced in other threads about Texas
-Spreetail opens big office in Austin because they can't recruit in Omaha/Lincoln
-Builder Trend CEO said at real estate summit they're looking at opening an office in another city because they can't hire enough in Omaha
-HDR is doing major expansions in KC
I have to be missing something right? How can national companies like Yahoo, Toast, and LinkedIn brag public all year about how great the employment in Omaha is and make significant investments in this market while "local" companies flee elsewhere?

The simple, and most realistic answer is simply this- they are not “really” committed to the Omaha area.. and members of these “local company board of directors” have family looking for greener pastures because, frankly, they hate living in Omaha and naturally, a larger and a “perceived” more progressive metropolitan area just HAS to be a better place to land than “Omaha”.. It’s the age old BS attitude from my generation that once we turn “of age”, we need to “get out” of Omaha..
That attitude is utter nonsense (see the reasoning why ConAgra and Pepperjax Grill fled Omaha as their corporate HQ’s)..
New to market companies like Yahoo, LinkedIn, Facebook and Toast, have lived in the “greener pastures” and they know better..
Now before I get flamed for this, I know for many of our “locals” the above “attitude” is not necessarily the case..But they just need to be more transparent and make a better effort.. I also know, though, some of our “locals” have the same BS attitude Conagra and Pepperjax had- and they just “can’t wait” to get out. I say to them, if they REALLY intend to leave a thriving and growing metropolitan Omaha- good riddance. Less than 5 years from now, they’ll find out a critical corporate relocation mistake was made...

HDR acquired a KC company and that is probably the reason or part of it for their growth in KC.
ConAgra, as I've said many times, has a snotnose who loves Chicago. ConAgra succeeded under Mike Harper because he had a passion for the company & its products. Snotnose is a Chicagoan who has been hired by a board under duress by some snotnose minor investor who didn't get the required return one day. Snotnose has a passion for Chicago, not the company or products.
As for Spreetail I'd simply say that yes, there is a wealth of talent in Austin and who wouldn't want to hire them. That doesn't make them anti Omaha.
From what I read now and remember when I lived there Omaha has gone through a transformation along with the economy as a whole. Until the 2000s Omaha had local entrepreneurs who had a passion for Omaha. However, beginning with the 80s some of those companies had such success that they had offers to sell. I know of a couple of dozen relatively large companies that started in Omaha and sold out after decades in business. FDR was started in Omaha and by rights should still have its headquarters there, for example.
Let me pose a question and give it some thought before you answer. Assume you started a little company in the 60s. You worked your butt off and it grew and became very profitable. Along comes someone from out of town who offers you a mountain of cash to sell. You're in your 50s, 60s or later and you have an opportunity. Your kids don't want the business. Do you keep it? Do you take the cash and move from Omaha to your house in Phoenix or wherever that has been your "winter house"? Of course you make a nice donation to Creighton, Central High, UNMC or the Zoo because you want to give back to Omaha for all it's done for you but "it's time to relax and enjoy".

Re: Toast
Bingo. I think that recruiting is also an issue when these local corps are not investing in their employees by offering better pay, benefit packages, and/or amenities. You all mentioned employers who can wax poetic about how great it is to have offices in Omaha; they are all tech companies that are generally known to provide those things that helps with recruiting, even out of staters, potential employees. If employers were willing to pay what people can get in bigger cities (and I am not talking LA, NY, or even Chicago, but places like Denver or Minneapolis), it would help make up the difference. The other issue is culture. Big Omaha corps are just like other big corporations, and people can tell when they walk through. If these companies really wanted to be able to hire more talent, even in a "little" city like Omaha, look at how others are able to do it successfully. I am sure these two issues would be apparent if these corporations evaluated themselves.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Wed May 22, 2019 10:49 pmGreat post as usual..OmahaJaysCU wrote: Wed May 22, 2019 7:14 pm General question:

- Omaha has lots of customer service reps and internal-tooling software engineers, but many "rockstars", the top 1 or 2% of all talent tend to go to the coasts or other hot job markets, if only to prove that they've made it. This makes hiring some leadership positions very difficult in Omaha.
- Omaha pay is not always competitive even against peer cities like Austin or Nashville, and it's definitely not competitive against coastal job centers.
Those are the key reasons I see that Omaha employers struggle to recruit (or, at a minimum, say that they struggle). To fix this, Omaha needs to become a trendy town that people are interested in nationally. Investments in light rail, live/work/play districts, and outdoor recreation are all very "in" things, but I would suggest that if Omaha is serious with competing with Austin/Portland/Atlanta/etc, that it also jump on new bandwagons to differentiate itself and create a strong city identity.

The easy answer is the obvious, I’ve worked my arse off and now it’s time to retire to my garden, or wherever I’m happy and sell, sell SELL.. But then, you have to think about your people..the ones who along with you, over the years, have helped you build this little company into the attractive purchase magnet it is today. What happens to them? Will they get “taken care of”. How about this great city who without its regional population base, could have never build up this little company to its vibrant viability it is today. Does our new purchaser plan to stay in the Omaha metro? Will they simply cut bait and run off to one of the perceived more attractive metro darlings like Austin, Seattle or Portland? These, and a multitude of other questions which require not so simple answers would need to be addressed if it’s my company and I’m approached with a attractive package to sell. I want to make sure my employees are taken care of and my community is not shoved aside and disregarded..
Perfect world yes, I’d want my cake, give everyone a piece, so we and our community can all benefit too..
That would be the best answer I, “Mr Pie in the Sky” , could give

I know we have diverted somewhat discussing the claimed hiring/recruiting problems of lintime Omaha firms in light of younger companies who are expanding in the area, but I came across a couple articles that highlights some of the points that have been touched here.
Here's one about how these tech companies differ from the usual corporations in Omaha.
https://www.3newsnow.com/news/local-new ... ue-to-grow
And this that bolsters the fact that Omaha continues to underpay. Out of the 30 "boomtowns" on this list with populations under 500k, Omaha is at/near the bottom for income increase over the five year period between 2012 and 2017. That needs to change.

Re: Toast
Sorry, last article on this issue concerning Omaha's perceived inability to recruit. There was a report done concerning Austin's downtown, a city that most midsize cities would like to emulate in growth and investment. Anyway, the median household income for downtown residents, composed of primarily young, single professionals was $110,000. That is a staggering number for a midsize city, in my opinion. But it works; people are moving there because of the high paying jobs, and companies are creating more jobs and investing in Austin because people are moving there.

Pretty sure it was Grow Omaha. They were mentioning how Ak Sar Ben Village was nearly fully leased, or at an all time high. I think they then slipped in that Toast had moved from DT to Ak Sar Ben. Maybe to the old Gordman's HQ?
Not 100 percent certain it was the old Gordman's HQ but I remember that being mentioned during the same time. I was driving so I was fully paying attention when they initially said it. It just caught me off guard because I know there was a lot of excitement when Toast first came to Omaha and was locating DT.

Re: Toast (1926 S 67th St suite 200)
It's been confirmed by grow Omaha and Sam noddle. It's something like 50k sq ft of space. We discussed this move previously. May have been tied to the now cancelled central park plaza renovation project, but I am not sure. I don't know if they've retained anyone at CPP. If you search locations, it's only showing the new aksarben office.Greg S wrote: Tue Dec 06, 2022 9:54 amOmaha Cowboy wrote: Mon Dec 05, 2022 10:24 pmWhere did you hear about the possibility of this?…Greg S wrote: Mon Dec 05, 2022 12:03 pm Did Toast move all of it's Omaha employees from downtown to Ak Sar Ben?

I believe Markel is moving to 138th & Dodge as well. Both buildings should be largely vacant.

Toast laid off 10% of its workforce today (about 550). Not sure how many of those were Omaha though, I don’t see any notice in WARN.

Re: Toast (1926 S 67th St suite 200)
I have no clue, but I do know a few people that work there. If they just have employees in their building in Aksarben Village, it can't be much more than a few hundred, meaning the layoff might be less than 50 people.
