As someone who visits grocery stores daily for work, I actually used to like getting the salad buffett. But ever since the Market Grilles have been going in, I stopped. It's way too slow paced when I just wanted a quick healthy meal.
Do the Market Grille stores no longer have a salad bar?
Yes, however if you are going to eat in store the full service Market Grilles require you to eat in the restaurant area and give you a server and wait for your ticket and all this other jazz.
This is not the case. Yes, to dine in you have to enter the market grill because that's where the seating is, but they don't require you to be waited on. Usually there is a section for service and one without. I pay at the counter and go sit down with my all-you-can-eat salad bar at least once every two weeks, and have been doing so for some time.

Now, if you want to discuss why only certain stores offer soup with the all-you-can-eat salad bar, that's a discussion that needs to be had with corporate. Though if you're wondering: 180th and Pacific, 90th and Center, 50th and Center, and 108th and Fort all include it.
I can not argue that the HyVee salad bar does have a fairly good selection with olives and berries and all. But! It bothers me that the salad bar is sitting out in the middle of the store all day with all kinds of dust and who knows what flying around and landing on the food. This unfortunate fact is just to gross for me and most sensible folks I imagine.

I’m in and out of kitchens all day every day and frankly I’ll take my chances with the front of the house at a well run store like Hy Vee.

What do you think most commercial kitchens look like, anyway?

So my initial reply to you was going to say “it’s a good easy place to get breakfast when you have a 16 month old child.”

Since then the 90th and center market grill has steadily gone downhill and the last couple visits have been a complete |expletive| show. Today was our last visit...

Applewood's Hy-Vee is undergoing renovation to its Market Grille for a "restaurant". I wonder if they will have Omaha's first Wahlburgers. I've never tried their Market Grille, but I might try the Wahlburgers.

We live very near the 78th & Cass Peony Park Hy-Vee so that's our location of choice, although it seems to be getting more and more in need of a refresh. Have never eaten at a Market Grill and the 78th & Cass store still has the multi-station "all you can eat" model, but since we rarely do "all you can eat" anywhere that's not inviting to us. For some reason, in our mail there are regularly ads and coupons for the Hy-Vee Market Grill restaurants -- which must be confusing to many who shop at this store.

Anyone hear of any growth plans for the Elkhorn site yet? that corner is really starting to take off now: Runza, First National, Good Life, T-Mobile, Anytime Fitness, Todays Dental, Walgreens. All are anchoring the site now. the OCI headquarters is framed up, East side of the development is pretty full, a few lots left.

HyVee has acquired six Shopco pharmacy locations and this was announced last Feb I learned. The locations are:

Forest City, Iowa
Toledo, Iowa
Mt. Ayr, Iowa
Emmetsburg, Iowa
St. Peter, Minnesota
West Point, Nebraska

https://www.hy-vee.com/corporate/news-e ... st-cities/

I find this interesting in addition to what I have heard from a couple of people that I know in West Point.
The Shopko pharmacy in these six communities will soon become a Hy-Vee Pharmacy that will operate in the existing Shopko building, despite the news that Shopko is closing these locations.
What two of the people I know well in WP have heard is that HyVee is seriously considering putting in a grocery store in the Shopco building. The building is not that old and is large enough IMO to hold a Grocery store the size that HyVee would put in other towns this size where they have stores. Some of this info is coming from people working in the pharmacy. Not sure if they are employees before , after transition or both.

That would good for West Point. Then again, I have heard a few rumors for the Onawa store which I am near by, but a number of people says these rumors are not going to happen because they want too much money for the Onawa store.

I think this one may have some legs under it since HyVee has acquired the pharmacys at these locations and that is confirmed. I have no idea if this would be the plan at the other locations but I am guessing there would be a chance.

That's great news for West Point and the other towns on that list. I wonder if they'll turn these into the "Hy-Vee Drug" concept in those locations (similar to the one in Florence and elsewhere, which are the next gen of their old "Drug Town" stores from the 1980s) or one of their smaller-footprint grocery stores. Either way it's a win for those towns.

What I have been told is that it will be a Grocery store if they move forward.

Yea, I see HyVee does have the pharmacy listed on there site, and it is the same address as the Shopko Hometown. I am still wondering how they are doing this when that Shopko closes. The only thing would be they will still have it in the back of the store with a different entrance for the employees. I don't know how that store was layout was tho.

Looks like HyVee to West Point is official without the "official" HyVee announcement
West Point developer Dave Baumert signed a contract Thursday with Hy-Vee for the supermarket to lease the former Shopko facility for 10 years, with three “five year” extension options. Baumert tells KTIC News he expects Hy-Vee to take over in about two or three months.
The deal excludes a gas station and the supermarket will use the existing facility of 33,000 square feet which will make it about the size of the store in Fremont. Hy-Vee already has been operating a pharmacy from the location for the last few months.

Will they still charge me extra for not going to the main store 20 yards away?

Fascinating. It reminds me of Walmart and Target's online order and pick up service. I'll be very interested to know if that concept works.

I have used the order online and pickup in store at both Walmart and Target, and love both. Walmart just installed a huge Online Pickup kiosk in the very front of their Hickory Street store, and it is much much more convenient than having to trudge to the far back of the store.

I am ambivalent at best about using a similar service at a supermarket, as I am forever picking up additional items than what I have on my list when I run to the grocery. If I see something on sale that I know I will need in the coming days or weeks, I will usually add it to my cart.

The one thing I’ve experienced with online and pick up at grocery stores like Baker’s or HyVee etc, is you need to check the freshness dates on items. Many times, store employees could care less about this aspect..and load up your cart with items which are either about to, at, or past the freshness dates.. I’ve experienced this unfortunate happenstance multiple times..

It really discourages me from taking advantage of this convenience...

Bingo! Shopping these days is more than just looking for a bottle marked "Heinz Ketchup" and putting it into the cart. Sometimes you need to check nutrition facts or for certain content due to health concerns, sometimes you need to compare products, and most definitely most of the time you need to check expiration dates. Plus, my idea of "the right" fruits or veggies to pick may be totally different than the store employee who is shopping for me -- if he/she has any interest in that at all. I can't imagine someone else shopping for me.

I once bought two loaves of bread from the Hy-Vee bakery, and after getting home and opening the packages in preparation for a dinner gathering I found mold on each loaf. I then looked at the “use by” date on the package and it was the prior day. I immediately returned them to the bakery and had a few words with the baker person. They refunded my money, but I was most upset that they still had the bread on the shelf, and it wasn’t even reduced in price. I will say that Hy-Vee is normally pretty good about preventing such things from happening.
Freshness and “use by” dates are very important with specialty bread items as well as lettuce and other produce. Baker’s almost always prices such items at half price, and those are good bargains if you plan to immediately use them.

Most of the times there is nothing wrong with food that is at or past that date --- unless moldy bread  http://healthland.time.com/2013/09/18/i ... o-toss-it/
“Use by” and “Best by”: These dates are intended for consumer use, but are typically the date the manufacturer deems the product reaches peak freshness. It’s not a date to indicate spoilage, nor does it necessarily signal that the food is no longer safe to eat.
“Sell by”: This date is only intended to help manufacturers and retailers, not consumers. It’s a stocking and marketing tool provided by food makers to ensure proper turnover of the products in the store so they still have a long shelf life after consumers buy them. Consumers, however, are misinterpreting it as a date to guide their buying decisions. The report authors say that “sell by” dates should be made invisible to the consumer.

There is no way, when shopping for groceries, I’ll purchase items either at or past the freshness date.. Those items should either be separated and marked down, or taken off the shelves entirely..

I very much like the idea of online grocery store shopping.. But absolutely do not trust the items placed in my cart I’m paying full price for. Until these stores have this issue quality controlled, and the store employees required to actually check freshness dates, I’ll be passing on online grocery shopping for now.. I’ve been burned too many times and don’t have anymore time to waste going back to the store, complaining about this issue, and getting an actual fresh item replacement (and don’t even talk to me about their “selections” for produce)..

It’s BS they can’t get this right EVERY time. Considering the prices we have to pay...

Never have and never will have a store do my shopping for me, especially not at a grocery store.

I eat stuff past date all the time, but I would never buy something for full price if it was at or close to the date, depending on what it is.

Family fare sells little packages of snacks for a dollar a piece and the come as a pallet full of them. The one on Grover usually has a pallet of butter toffee peanuts on display, and I noticed it went away sometime in the last few months. Last week I saw it reappear, assuming it was a fresh pallet full, but nope, its the same old pallet that was best by April of this year.

Maybe it’s a personal preference thing.. But I just don’t feel like I should be paying full price for items with an about to, at, or past the best by or freshness date.. Especially when, 99% of the time, the exact same product is on display with a much better bb date..

Point being (from my experience)- HyVee, Baker’s etc do not put a premium on getting their online shoppers the freshest available product on their shelves- into your cart.. But you are still expected to pay the same price. I won’t play that game any longer..

So again, for the foreseeable future, I’ll simply continue shopping in store myself and live with items I select...

It depends what it is. If its a bottle of ketchup or something that that will take months to use, I don't want a product that is even within a few months of best by or expire. Things that go bad quickly that I don't eat quickly, such as bread and milk, I look for the freshest date so I have the most possible time to eat them. If its a bag of chips that will go in a week or two, I don't even glance at the date.

But, that is the tug and pull of having the grocery store do your shopping. I doubt the people doing the pulling care about the dates whatsoever, and it would even be of benefit to the store to move the oldest product if they can get away with it.

In reference to the "best by" or "best if used by" label, I'm still working on a loaf of Great Value whole wheat bread that was "best if used by" August 27th, and it is still a-ok. I expect it will still be alright through the end of the month. That stuff tends to last a surprisingly long time.

The rebranding of the convenience store in front of HyVee at 180th & Q is complete. The new signs and look have been up for a little while. Here is what it looks like.

Interesting how this is a news item just today. Our Hy-Vee (Peony Park, 79th & Cass) announced and began its overnight closing several weeks ago. I presume it's taken this long to roll out the closings across all Omaha stores. Now, if this will help with the aisle congestion caused by stocking all hours of the day and evening, I'm all for it.

Wonder if this has also been brought on by more people moving to delivery and pick up.

108th and Fort started it in early December. When I did shop during the late hours the checker was usually the same employee who seemed agitated that their work was being interrupted.
