It shouldn’t matter what the TelePrompTer reads so long as the anchor has half a brain.

Given what you saw/heard in your example a week or so back, I completely agree. A “sorority test”? No free pass on that gaffenativeomahan wrote: Fri Jun 07, 2019 11:26 pm It shouldn’t matter what the TelePrompTer reads so long as the anchor has half a brain.

I mentioned that fact to my wife Sun AM. She told me that she goes to a Vietnamese lady for her nails, and in conversation with her it's not uncommon for people going back take a month vacation.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Sun Jun 16, 2019 4:19 pm And for the 3rd weekend in a row, Waverle Monroe co anchored the KETV First News in the morning..

I sent Chinh a message via FB, asking if she was opening Hearst's Ho Chi Minh City bureau. She replied that she hoped to be back in town for this weekend's broadcasts.

Is Charlie Van Dyke out at WOWT? He was their voiceover since the early 90's. But I caught a small glimpse of their newscast at 6:30 and he didn't introduce it. I guess it must be that new guy who they've had for a few years now.

I often avoid the local TV news (yes, it's often THAT bad!) but yesterday I wanted to get a weatherguesser's opinion on how long the showers would last so I kept the news on after Jeopardy.
During the plug for the upcoming programs that evening, the newscaster (do not remember who she was) pronounced the name as "Julia Loo-iss Dray-fuss" as she stumbled through reading the lines from the teleprompter.
How can ANYONE, particularly someone who supposedly works in media, not know that name and how it's pronounced?

Especially given that her dad is staggeringly wealthy and she is an overrated one tone comedic actress who fell into a horse tank of fame and wealth on one of the most improbable shows ever put on network TV.Omababe wrote: Wed Jul 03, 2019 7:10 am I often avoid the local TV news (yes, it's often THAT bad!) but yesterday I wanted to get a weatherguesser's opinion on how long the showers would last so I kept the news on after Jeopardy.

Re: Omaha Local News Channels
You wouldn't believe how many words (and names) are often misspelled on the teleprompter, which is the responsibility of producer to catch and correct but everyone is literally so busy trying to put the package together before a newscast that it gets overlooked a lot so on the air, unless the anchor has read the script beforehand (they usually don't have enough time to read the entire script) they'll read what's on the prompter and have no choice but to catch these mistakes in real time and correct them, if they have enough experience. It's really tough to do, so cut them some slack ;)Uffda wrote: Wed Jul 03, 2019 8:28 pmI wonder if it might typed up on the TelePrompTer that way. This actually does go on behind the scenes every once in a while but it's all in good fun and not nearly as dramatic (and hilarious) like in that movie lol

Her name is Lauren Taylor and yes, she did mispronounce the name but it wasn't totally her fault as it was misspelled on the prompter. I blame the producer! ;)Omababe wrote: Wed Jul 03, 2019 7:10 am I often avoid the local TV news (yes, it's often THAT bad!) but yesterday I wanted to get a weatherguesser's opinion on how long the showers would last so I kept the news on after Jeopardy.

I think where the TV newscasters get in trouble real fast is when they are talking between each other and are off script completely. The dingies especially reveal they are indeed dingies when they get off script.

Re: Omaha Local News Channels
That's actually encouraged to make it seem like it's not all scripted but yea, when they can't pull it off it's a disaster. Most complaints are about mispronunciation and sometimes the wardrobe for "revealing too much". Apparently these people have never seen some of the Italian or Spanish newscasts where you couldn't care less what they're reporting on because you're too busy gawking.GrandpaaSmucker wrote: Tue Aug 06, 2019 7:31 am I think where the TV newscasters get in trouble real fast is when they are talking between each other and are off script completely. I can only think of one possible spelling error that might have resulted in maybe half of the name being mispronounced, and anyone with any kind of knowledge of TV personalities would or should have caught it.
It sure sounded like an unforced error to me.

How, specifically?
I know these things too! I've worked in media and I haven't spent the last 50+ years on some turnip farm in Manitoba!
I know of one possible scenario where it may have been a production error, but highly unlikely.

Here's a question:
For those who are old enough to remember, Charlie Van Dyke was the voiceover for KETV in the late 80's. Then in the early 90's, he switched to WOWT. Has there been another TV market where this has happened? A voiceover going from one station to another in the same market?

Well, yes, I know John Knicely, Jim Flowers and Ross Jernstrom left KETV for WOWT in the early 90's. But voiceovers don't normally do that.

What ever became of Flowers? I still don't buy that he was let go because of his pay being too high and not being offered a new contract. If salary were an issue, I'd think Knicely would have been let go long ago too.

As for Knicely, he's the only thing keeping Six from turning into the UNO AV Department. They do less with more. Six has a longtime reputation of keeping their male talent longer than the other stations. I'm sure Knicely is giving a hometown discount to Gray, as well--he's stuck in this market and both sides understand that. He's still on-air because the idea of changing him out has never crossed Gray's collective mind.
