There was a route publicly floated by Metro that was to start at the North Omaha Transit Center, take Sorensen PKWY to 90th, 90th down to Maple, then Maple all the way out to 168th. The purpose of the route would have been to get people from North Omaha to the many jobs along West Maple in the morning, and back in the evening. That is the last new route that I've seen talked about by Metro.

There are several "new" routes I've though of over the years. I'll tell you which ones make the most sense to me right now.
-Extend Route 11 along Pacific from Aksarben Village to Sterling Ridge (in the future to Heartwood Preserve/144th & Dodge).
-Create a new route (I would call it Route 17) that would take riders from South Omaha Transit Center, then travel west on Harrison out to Southport.
-Bring back route 48 in some form, which used to go from UNMC, along Saddle Creek, South 50th, and south 48th.
-Bring back the South 90th/84th/F/108th/Harrison portion of Route 5
-Bring back route 28 which would go from UNMC to Westroads via 52nd and Blondo

Then After ORBT starts, there are several completely new routes that could potentially be opened up due to ORBT:
-Bring back route 22 -or- use new routes to serve portions of the old 22, such as:
-A new route that would go from Westroads to L Street Marketplace via Miracle Hills and 120th.
-A new route that would go from Westroads to Village Pointe via Blondo, North Park, and 168th.
-A new route that would go from Westroads to Heartwood Preserve and serve all the West Dodge Access Roads.
-A new route that would go from Westroads to 168th and West Maple via Blondo, North Park, and West Maple.

Route 16 to the airport. It doesn't operate on the weekends and does not have any bus activity between 8am and 4pm. LOL

I took a hotel shuttle downtown once so I could catch the bus to Westroads. I was pretty embarrassed about that

I like all of these suggestions, particularly the North to Northwest Omaha route. Buses to Sterling Ridge, Heartwood, and Avenue One should be on the horizon. It would help alleviate the need for seas of parking and giant parking garages for those developments, though those are going to be there anyway. I do not think your suggestions are to far off from what we could see as bus service in West Omaha in the near future. With LB 492, I did not realize that a regional transit authority created under that bill will have greater, almost double, tax levying authority than what METRO currently has in addition to having a greater tax base if other municipalities in neighboring counties opt in. With greater funding, METRO, or whatever the regional transit authority will be called, can expand service exponentially throughout the Metro, via bus or OBRT service, and any other mode of public transit that it will manage.

I haven't seen it with my own eyes, but according to Metro, the stations are under construction now.

I was reading the FAQ for the orbit and didn't see what the hours of service will be. Does anyone have an idea?

I don't recall hearing anything specific, but I'd have to assume it will be 5am to midnight at the least.

I would guess they will do some trials to see. 5am - midnight is about what route 2 runs, but I would guess ORBT would run for fewer hours.

I received an email notice about this 5 days ago. It said that construction would start on 62nd and 90th street westbound stations. The website currently includes 72nd westbound as well. With the expected project completion time, we should see several being worked on simultaneously shortly.

Is ORBT going to replace the 2? METRO hasn't talked about it, but the stops are the same, ORBT will run more frequently, 10-20 minute intervals depending on day or evening, and provide faster service. Seems like replacing the 2 to relocate buses and drivers to different routes would be the way to go.

I got the interval time from the graphic in this WOWT article: https://www.wowt.com/content/news/Updat ... 09451.html

I would assume they will keep the 2. Probably only run one bus all day back and forth for the riders who dont have the ability to walk the extra distance to an ORBT stop.

Does the 2 stop at more stops than those mentioned in the schedule? Does METRO's route schedules account for all stops on a given route? http://www.ometro.com/wp-content/upload ... 05_NEW.pdf

Yes, the 2 stops wherever there is a bus sign along Dodge/Douglas, which is about every couple clocks. All the schedules reference recognizable intersections and points of interest and aren't meant to identify the location of every stop.

I see. With both running simultaneously, there will be a noticeable increase in bus activity on Dodge and Douglas.

These look good. Hopefully they will help make using the bus easier. I think the bus can be good, it has to be convenient and easy to use. In many larger cities it’s the best way to get around. But not in Omaha.

http://www.ometro.com/index.php/metro-r ... sit-grant/

According to this news release, METRO is received a $4.7 million federal grant to help purchase 11 new buses and pay for other improvements in the the system. The new buses are intended to replace some old buses, but I hope they are planning from some expanded or more frequent routes and service.

I'm waiting for the day they finally do that. I don't think that is part of this package, but now that Metro has - and has continually been getting - some of the newest hardware in the country, hopefully we can get some funding for new routes before too long.

This morning I saw one of the new Orbit buses heading north on I680, it got off at Dodge and headed east. Never close enough to see if they were using it or if it was being delivered to METRO.

I'm not a fan of that. Seems lazy not to change the Metro logo if they were going to change everything else. The only similarity I see is the font of their "metro" looks slightly similar to Omaha's. The train looks closer to Metros' shade of blue, but the bus is darker, unless its just the lighting.

I think our Metro's design is one of the best in the nation. Simple accents on the buses make for a not-so-laborious task of applying the decals. lower cost of materials. Our "M" is different, but in a distinct and pleasing way. They only have to buy the stock white buses to start, probably keeping the cost of the bus down. And I personally love the light blue we use. I think Omaha's rebranding has gone excellent. Not only was it a new look, but ever since the rebranding, they have made huge improvements in all facets. They've done an excellent job.

I hate the SOl's buses. It speaks to the degradation of this country when a company that preys on the poor and downtrodden is allowed to proudly display their name all over a city bus. It ain't right I don't care how much they are paying for it.

I was talking about the regular unwrapped Metro buses. A lot of people do ride the bus to SOL's, so I see what you're saying.

I went on a drive through Downtown to see how the new routing for the 13 looks. I was really surprised after turning north onto 12th and passing through Izard street intersection, how desolate and unimproved the area looks... Raw, I guess. In progress. Then I went west on Nicholas and saw some buildings with lights. Looked like they were testing lighting or something because every floor would light up and then suddenly go dark, then light up again. Finally, as I passed through 13th street, I was pleasantly surprised to see a new bus shelter and curb cut-out that serves as the 13's layover point. I wasn't expecting to see anything more than a bus sign strapped to a light pole. A nice transit installation for a raw, up and coming area. Looks like Metro plans to be a part of that development for a while. Pretty cool, at least to me.

METRO announced it formal offer to Lauren Cencic as its next CEO. She is a former METRO employee who is currently working for LA Metro as a Senior Director. I think the highlighted projects she is working on in LA Metro points to the future direction of METRO in the metro's regional transit authrority.

Metro Identifies New CEO
“Lauren possesses all the qualities we sought in a new leader,” said Board Chair Jay Lund. “She is a visionary with transit industry experience across many disciplines. She brings the knowledge, passion, and leadership required to provide quality transit service every day, and we are confident in her ability to lead the agency as we continue advancing Metro’s mission of connecting our community.”

Cencic comes from the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority, where she leads various projects as a Senior Director, including:

- Providing oversight and guidance for major light rail projects, including environmental planning and design of the Eastside Phase 2 Light Rail extension
- Leading design criteria, environmental, and corridor studies for a variety of infrastructure projects, including the LA River Path project
- Managing feasibility, environmental impact, design, and rail conversion studies for bus rapid transit projects, including the BRT Vision and Principles
Study, the Vermont BRT, and the North San Fernando Valley BRT
- Developing short- and long-term strategies, budgets, and policies; leading and supporting teams; and coordinating community and stakeholder
engagement

“I am a firm believer that transit can have a profound impact on communities by enhancing mobility and providing access to opportunities,” Cencic said. “The fundamentals are in place in Omaha, and the upcoming ORBT launch, potential for expansion to a regional transit authority, and community energy around transportation make this an especially critical time to step into this role.”

Metro is temporarily altering route 92, the express bus that goes from 12th & Dodge to 180th & Dodge, due in part to both the introduction of ORBT and COVID related reductions in ridership. https://www.ometro.com/wp-content/uploa ... load-1.pdf
This is how route 92 used to be during it's inception some time around 2000. In the beginning, the terminus was at Westroads and it went to 144th & Dodge. It was discontinued for several years, and was reintroduced as a single line that goes from Downtown to 180th & Dodge and was probably the most successful express line ever in Omaha. I don't think the change will go over well, as part of the appeal of the 92 was going from 180th to Downtown in ~40 minutes with no transfers. Now it will require a transfer between the 92 and ORBT, which would most likely increase the travel time and complicate the commute for a large number of riders. I think it will reduce the number of "commuters", while at the same time allowing slightly better access to west Omaha to other riders.

This "trial period" change essentially makes the 92 a local route which would have some pros and cons. The new period of service is ~ 6am to 9am and 4pm to 7pm. I have always felt there should be all-day service to Village Pointe, maybe if Metro would run this route all day, this could be a new venture into suburb service.

ALLLLLRIGHT! We have a new transit initiative that began today : https://www.ometro.com/metro-news/metro ... metronext/

The first one which was the Central Omaha Alternatives Analysis from 2011, culminated in the completion of ORBT, and the strong recommendation (and hopefully continuing planning) of the Farnam streetcar.

Who knows what this one will find, but I love that Metro is continuing to seek improvement.

I’m going to voice how, as a resident of the benson area (65th Maple) I can’t get a direct bus ride to the Med Center for work. I have to get dropped off on Cummings and walk south.

It’s just I see all areas east of 72nd do have access to a direct drop off to the Med Center (north, south, midtown, Aksarben) I have two bus stop access options (Military and Maple) and neither can provide this for the area and always wonder why.

Money and lack of it.
It’s just I see all areas east of 72nd do have access to a direct drop off to the Med Center (north, south, midtown, Aksarben) I have two bus stop access options (Military and Maple) and neither can provide this for the area and always wonder why.
If I were given the power to make a new route, I'd have it leave the NOTC, go down Paxton to Fontenelle to Radial, then down Saddle Creek to 50th, 50th to L to 48th, 48th to Harrison, Harrison to 36th, 36th to Q, Q to MetroTC

There are a few options that I could see happening.. Metro historically hasn't added brand new routes, but has used several variations of other older routes over the years. Not saying they wouldn't, but here are a few more possible options I feel could happen more in the shorter term.

Metro used to have the 48, which started at Midtown TC (44th & Douglas) and went over to Saddle creek, Leavenworth to 52nd, 52nd to Center, Center to 50th, 50th to L, L to 48th, 48th to Harrison and back. I could see them bringing back a variation of that one with a terminus at MCTC. It used to interline with the 28 which started at Midtown TC, Dodge to 52nd, 52nd to Blondo, Blondo to 96th, 96th to Westroads.

My other thought is with the 14. Theoretically this routing could work : Take the 14 at 52nd and Radial, remove the portion that goes 52nd to Bedford, Bedford to Creighton, Creighton to NOTC. Instead have it turn south on 52nd to Underwood, Underwood to Saddle Creek, Saddle Creek to Farnam and turn around somewhere in the UNMC area. I just don't know how well ridden the current Bedford portion is or if the one I stated above would be more well ridden enough to make a change... But I really do like that idea because Metro is currently lacking any service through Dundee, and there is a lack of Northwest Omaha service to UNMC. And because it is a route that uses main roads and goes a long distance, I could see it working better than the connection of UNMC and Dundee that they discontinued about 10 years (it was a neighborhood route).

For everyone who has comments and suggestions for OMetro, they have a new initiative to improve service and plan for the future. Here is the information on MetroNEXT:

Metro announces public transportation enhancement initiative, MetroNEXT
FEBRUARY 25, 2021

Metro announced today MetroNEXT, a new strategic planning and public engagement initiative to improve transit in the Omaha region. The yearlong effort will consider improvements to existing routes, new service types, potential service expansion and more. The process will culminate in the MetroNEXT Plan, a multi-year transit enhancement strategy.

“The landscape of our city is changing, and the pandemic has illuminated the importance of a safe and dependable transit system,” said Metro’s CEO, Lauren Cencic. “Together, we need to decide how public transportation can best serve our community. With MetroNEXT, we hope to outline a path toward a more connected region.”

Building from the vision set forth in the Greater Omaha Chamber’s ConnectGO initiative, Metro will engage with community members through public meetings, surveys, focus groups and other methods to develop strategies for the future of transit in the region. The planning process will feature topics including:

More frequent bus arrivals
Better bus stops, including passenger shelters and route information
Future ORBT lines
New service types to connect the region
Potential service expansion
Public engagement for MetroNEXT will begin with a series of virtual meetings in March:

Thursday, March 25, 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.
Saturday, March 27, 10:00 – 11:00 a.m.
Tuesday, March 30, 12:00 – 1:00 p.m.
More information will be made available in the weeks leading up to the meetings.

Cencic encourages stakeholders, current riders and the public to help shape the plan. “We hope you will join us and make your voices heard as we work together to identify and prioritize transit enhancements for our region.”

For you OMetro experts, is there a student or youth rate for the month pass? Or do they only get a discount for the 10-ride pass?
