Re: Children's Hospital Expanding (84th and Dodge)
I needed to take a kid to the ER late last week (don't worry, he's OK). We generally take them here and the last time I was here they were just starting the garage. This project is really impressive in scope. The ER is on the east side of the current structure, so I got to another angle of the additions, and the new structures are really bulky and close together. The garage is reminds me of the garages at the airport, in terms of size, and the new hospital tower is noticeably taller than the existing structures. It's really impressive.

Fantastic pictures. This thing is just massive. I wonder how tall the tallest section is ? This structure reminds of something you might see in a larger metro than Omaha. Would be interesting to see how this compares to Children hospitals in larger cities like KC or Denver. The parking garage does seem similar to the new airport garage in ways. Might be Omaha’s most dense collection of buildings west of 72nd.

Thanks, Brad -- great photos. I said when I saw the rendering, and I still say at this stage of construction, that I sure wish they would have chosen the same finishes as the previous Children's Hospital buildings. I thought those finishes and colors made the med center stand out. So far, the new parts look "meh" to me, particularly when they hide the older parts. But yeah, it's dense!

Re: Children's Hospital Expanding (84th and Dodge)
Reading back on this thread, when the first expansion was announced over ten years ago, there were a couple posts about how they couldn't believe there would be space. Faster forward to 2016, we had the same comments. This is a very dense project and children's packed it tight and built up on a very tight lot. If they could apply this kind of mindset in downtown for future projects, I would be very pleased.

Thanks for the wonderful photos!
It’s too bad that the new structure appears not to blend in at all with the color or design of all of the surrounding buildings. Maybe the final façade is yet to be installed.

Thanks Everyone
There are Orange and Turquoise fins by the windows which kind of match the existing buildings. They are more noticeable from the ground, but still small in scale.nativeomahan wrote: Thu Nov 07, 2019 9:26 am It’s too bad that the new structure appears not to blend in at all with the color or design of all of the surrounding buildings. Kind of off topic but every time I see Brad's work all I can say is that it's world class. I've never seen examples that can come close with regard to any other city. Keep it up Brad.

The parking garage has a very interesting texture as viewed from street level. The project is absolutely massive. Makes you feel small when walking or driving along Dodge.

Boy, Methodist sure has grown in the last 30 years. I can remember when Children's was in one of those 9-story buildings and the current Children's Hospital was just a smaller 4-story rectangular building that housed orthopedics or something like that. In the spring of 1991, I broke my arm roller skating and was taken to the ER at Methodist and had a cast put on my arm. But afterwards, I had a couple of appointments with a doctor in that building across the street. Times have changed. That's for sure.

That building was a medical office building that housed cardiac surgery and other surgeons. Eventually heme onc clinic was there. Now it’s offices, mrsticka wrote: Sun Mar 01, 2020 1:41 am Boy, Methodist sure has grown in the last 30 years. Just for the record, I'd been in that building before, but for something else. I don't remember what it was for. I was so young then. But strangely enough, I remember 2 doctors who worked in that building at the time and I saw both of them. Dr. Herman and Dr. Bock.
Dr. Bock was the doctor I saw for my arm after breaking it roller skating. So I guess he was an orthopedic doctor. And I forget what kind of doctor Herman was. Like I said, it was so long ago. Late 80's/early 90's.

Bock and Hermann were pediatric orthopedic surgeons. Bock retired before I worked there, but was the first in Omaha. Hermann worked there for a few years after I was there. Well liked and a good guy.

Well, the doctor I regularly saw for standard routine checkups worked in that 3-story building at the bottom of the hill on Dodge–The Professional Medical Center. My pediatrician was Dr. Kent Kronberg. Now he's at a Children's clinic on 132nd and Maple.

Any ice on the streets in that canyon could be there a while, without sunshine to help melt.

Completion date moved back to September to complete the PICU. They had planned on only doing part and saving the rest for future expansion. Their data suggested moving it up.

I drove by that yesterday when they were working on taking it down. A bit unnerving driving literally like a foot or two away from that giant crane they were using to take the other one down.

For the past week or so, the brightly colored N855CH Helicopter has been missing and a dark blue helicopter N306LF has been used in its place. Not sure if N855CH is down for annual or overhaul or what's going on.
