Nebraska Football 2020

Post by nebugeater »

New year. Time for a new thread

Looks like Maurice Washington and the Huskers are officially over. With Mo the best in whatever his future holds.

https://www.ketv.com/article/maurice-wa ... r/30392485

"The Nebraska football program announced today that running back Maurice Washington has been dismissed from the Husker team. Washington is expected to enter the NCAA transfer portal soon."

Well that was an interesting day

First news was Mickey Joseph had turned down opportunity to be OC and wide receivers coach - although nothing had been reported about Troy Walters, the current Oc/WR coach was leaving.

Later, it was announce Walters and Huskers parting company.

Then tonight Huskers announced Matt Lubick as Huskers' offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach.

Someone didn’t get their news leaks leaked in the right order.

Frost making some moves. The pressure this season to perform well is going to be intense. What bothers me most about this upcoming season is the schedule looks noticeably harder than 2019. I’m guessing the leash on Martinez will be short, and it should be. When you look at the progress other regional teams have made in recent years like Minnesota, Indiana and Iowa State. It makes Nebraska’s struggles even more frustrating.

This recent assistant coaching carousel is quite disturbing. We have got assistant coaches coming in here getting handed out $700,000 a year and $300,000 a year salaries for coaching a team that can barely beat bad teams. From Frost on down these guys are all about the money and that does not have jack to do with getting the Nebraska football program fixed. The main coaching change we really needed is a new Defensive coordinator. This is all a bunch of B.S. designed to make these guys rich. Meanwhile the rest of the country is laughing at us for being such dumb hicks for letting these guys take us for everything we got. Scott Frost himself ain't worth 700,000 dollars a year for the kind of results he is producing much less some assistant coach.

Frost guaranteed Martinez that he would always be the starting quarterback just to get him to come here. I would bet the farm that we are stuck with Martinez again for the whole 2020 season.

IT is being reported that as on Midday Thursday there are 53,500 sold for the spring game. Behind the pace of the last two years but not bad.

31,000 remaining

I saw this article Iowa State coaches were temporarily forfeiting 10% of their salaries and bonuses. Also Wyoming and Oregon are looking to or have also do the same. The article mention that this epidemic might cause colleges to relook at coaches pay for the future.

Has anyone read about Husker coaches doing the same?

I have been reading articles saying that this is the worst thing that could have ever happened for Scott Frost. Scott Frost was already on thin ice after getting blown out the past 2 seasons. Nobody needed this off season more then Frost to get practices and reps in for Nebraska. I have seen it written that this is the straw that will break Frosts back. I agree that Frost's career is in trouble but he still is going to walk away filthy rich so he will be fine.

I haven't yet. Actually as far as I know Iowa State is the only one of the local Power 5 schools I have seen taking these measures.

Will be interesting to watch. Going into this, NU was flush with cash between 3 money making sports (volleyball again reported a profit), and the new Big 10 TV contract. The longer this goes though....

I have not seen one article saying this could be the worst thing that happens to Frost. Can you please post the links to the articles that mention that?

If anything this buys him more time. This has been such a disruption it will be hard to hold this year against him or others.

This was one of the articles that made a few strong points along this train of thought. It said something to the effect that this virus could be the unseen nail in Frost's coffin.

I read another article on ESPN something yesterday that said about the same thing .

In a world of what ifs........ the paper has a story saying Vegas has set Nebraska's regular season win total at 6 1/2 games. I will never have the chance to make that bet but should the season happen I'm betting a hundred on the unders. No way Nebraska would win 7 games. The unders would be a steal.

Back to the scary reality......An article by Tom Shatel in the paper reports the Nebraska volleyball coach said there was a meeting for NU head coaches last week and Athletic Director Bill Moos gave them a warning, “If we don’t have football, there could be cuts. Be thinking how you want to manage things. Find some areas in your budget.”

He was on Mel Kiper's next best players available list for about 80 picks.

Darrion Daniels will sign with San Francisco.

Not a draft expert, but curious about the draft in this sense. When a player is picked #200 and gets a signing bonus big enough to buy a plane ride to training camp and then is paid league minimum, what is the typical outcome for these guys?

Do many of them make a living playing in the NFL? Do many make a living on scout teams? Or are they just marking time?

All depends on the player, the team, and how what they fit with what a team needs - offense, defensive or special teams. According to the NFL Players Association, the average career of an NFL player is 3.3 years so most are just marking time.

I wasn't going to say anything but since you asked.........All those Nebraska players we just saw get drafted will be lucky to survive the training camp cuts. That is a fact. We saw them play this year and they did not really stick out even on a team full of lousy players. I watched every single game Nebraska played this year and I do not remember seeing one single Nebraska player that was NFL caliber. That was the problem. I believe if Nebraska truly had 4 or 5 NFL caliber players on it they would of won more then just 5 games this year.

Where this thing could take some unforeseen twists and turns is the matter of the virus. The NFL seems to be as dysfunctional right now as the United States government. The NFL appears to have just barreled into the draft and rammed it thru not even knowing if there is going to be a season or if the season will start. The idea of the NFL having a season and the country getting back to normal soon seem to be predicated more on hope and prayers then science and facts. What if they do try to ram a season thru and some players get the virus or refuse to play. Does that then open the door for less talented players like our recent Nebraska draftees to get on the field? :what:

Interesting prospect. Could be like the player strike in 1987 if the NFL decides to push on and certain players decide not to. There are hundreds or thousands of players that wouldn't normally make the cut that would easily risk catching the virus for an opportunity to play. Could be an ugly product, but I know people will watch on TV no matter what. Even if it came down to players playing Madden. Just look at how NASCAR is running virtual races, and people are still watching. I don't think there's any way a NFL season could happen with fans in stadiums.

Quarterbacks transferring is apparently just the new norm, it didn’t seem to be this way 20 years ago. I get it he wants to play and probably wouldn’t see much playing time at Nebraska. He seemed to have a good grasp of the playbook and is a good backup QB. But I don’t see him starting at many power five schools mainly because of his small frame. Will probably land at a mid major school or a power D2 program. I wish him the best.

Probably a good move for him. At best I think he was number 3 on the depth chart, but possibly behind the new recruit coming in from Alabama and would be #4.

Is he gonna start at Rutgers or be a backup ? I had him transferring to a school that he would be basically a for sure starter. What does it say about Rutgers football if Nebraska’s former number 3 QB is the starter at Rutgers ?.

Apparently he will be competing for the starting job. According to some news articles I just saw. Best of luck to him. I like his chances there more than NU. The Rutgers team last year was awful.

I would bet that he does start for Rutgers. I bet he cut the same kind of deal with the Rutgers head coach that Adrian Martinez cut with Scott Frost. There was an agreement that if he came to Rutgers he would be the starting quarterback no mater what. It is obvious that Frost foolishly guaranteed the starting position to Martinez when he recruited him. Noah knows it does not matter how good he is he will never be the starter at Nebraska.

All the above being said I would bet the college football season this year is not happening so the move is kind of meaningless for now. I saw recently that Nebraska was a 7 point favorite at Home over Cincinnati September 26th. I would love to be betting Cincinnati because Cincinnati has a pretty good chance of winning that game. This is all a pipe dream in reality because I bet that game never happens.

It's going to be really interesting to see if those who are so risk averse right now that they don't want to even leave their houses are suddenly just peachy keen to sit shoulder to shoulder in a stadium of 90k and flip out if they don't get that opportunity this year. Then, we'll find out just how scared people really were. If it gets in the way of their football, I see many changing from wanting everything closed and social distancing to "open everything right now! and where are my tickets?"

Hard to imagine the situation is going to change enough in 90 days to make a typical gameday at Memorial Stadium possible this year.

Agreed..

Can’t have it both ways. I’d suspect they’ll be some level of double standard hypocrisy here. We’ll see..

For the record, I think it’s 50/50 at best we have a college football season this year. If we do, it’ll likely be a modified schedule...
