Hmmm... "Miss Unibrow", eh? I know Selma Hayek played her in a movie -- a movie I havent yet seen. I dont know anything about her, except that she was a gay woman (I think) and had a unibrow. Anyways... Interesting "rags." I love those rainbowy SWern throws, that cloak the man is wearing reminds me of. Is that you, Coyote? P.S. Hot Shops, eh? I dont remember it called that, but Im sure that is correct.
I can get pushed out because I'm "too much" for some. Then, an observer of me comes suddenly swooping in to "fill my shoes." People are always more accepting of the new one, because their feathers aren't truly ruffled by them. (Yawn) I can count on it every time.

Frida Kahlo was a Mexican artist of Jewish descent who was very well known during her time. She lived in constant back pain after surviving a bus crash in Mexico, and she used her art to express her incessant pain. In her works, her use of self-portraits is innovative, and the images beg the viewer to understand her agony. She was married to Diego Rivera, arguably the most popular Mexican artist of the 20th century. They were lovers, artists, Socialists, free spirits, and Frida engaged in relationships with women while married to Rivera. I highly recommend you watch the movie "Frida". She is much more than a woman who "had a unibrow".
Interesting project potentially adding a lot of housing to downtown. 1201 Nicholas has been identified as a potential 60+ units but I have found nothing yet telling about the total number of projected residential units. Perhaps it is too early but does anyone have a proposed residential unit count for the highlighted proposal?

Millwork announced that Roger + Chris custom furniture and design firm will be opening a showroom in the district.
If anyone is wondering, per the Facebook page, the showroom and lab will be at the Mastercraft. It's a pretty high-profile addition to the Mastercraft considering most tenants are highly localized.
Up next: apartments. In the future: offices, retail, town houses, probably a hotel, a park and an entertainment area with restaurants and a musical performance space.
The developers are seeking a rezoning of the 42-acre area that will make it a Neighborhood Conservation/Enhancement (NCE) district.

The iconic orange arch sculpture that has greeted visitors to Gene Leahy Mall for decades was moved yesterday to Millwork Commons!
When Michael Alley of @apmarchitecture Millwork’s architectural partner, learned the sculpture – also known as the “space frame” – wasn’t part of the Mall’s redesign, he approached the Millwork ownership team about saving it. All agreed there was an opportunity to repurpose a piece of Omaha history and to use the space frame as it was first intended: to mark a new beginning.
The Mall was part of the “Back to the River” movement inspired by Mayor Gene Leahy in the early 1970’s, and the space frame was intended as a gateway. It was designed by Lawrence Halprin, a notable landscape architect, whose firm designed the Mall.
Moving it was no small task, but made easier and cost-efficient thanks to partners @fielddaydev who coordinated with crews working on the Mall. The space frame is 85 feet long and was transported down 13th Street on a flatbed truck!
There are already lots of ideas for how to incorporate the space frame. However, there’s more planning and construction to do before it reaches its permanent home within the neighborhood. Stay tuned! at Millwork Commons by Terry Koopman at the Mall by Field Day Development

Looks like it should be the building marked as a mixed use building on marked purple/blue (sorry, I am a little colorblind) east of the Mastercraft on the map on this page of their website.
There are a couple other sites 'Developing'. I really like this project and hope they make it through this bump in the economic road, especially with the anchor being small businesses.

I can't believe I missed that update. However, based on the release, the Disbrow Block seems to be reserved for office with ground floor retail. The Douglas County GIS lists the northern, larger warehouse as 1201 N 12 St. and the other building has an Izard address. If you look at buildings off 11th Street, I still think 1200 N 12th St. puts next week's proposal in the mixed used building next to Mastercraft.
On the Disbrow Block announcement, I like the rendering and am exciting that they are planning to have add a substantial amount of office space in Millwork Commons. In a Grow Omaha show a couple weeks ago, Jorge Sotolongo reported there being very strong interest from startups and local tech firms for space in Millwork. This validates that anecdotal evidence that there is real momentum for this development.
These buildings are really large. Will take a long time to build out. The one current under work is The Radford. The “future build” will be years away unless Omaha gets really lucky.
I wonder what the EIS says about traffic. These are all 2 lane streets and really no way to expand them. No off street parking. Any new construction likely has to be garage space.

Yeah, for sure. This area will take a while to build out. If my math is right and if you include the proposed building, this block alone will have something close to 200,000 sq. ft. of office space. For reference, Linkedin's building is approximately 200,000 sq. ft. If they land a couple big tenants, they could fill up fast, but that's a big IF. I wonder how they will utilize the Mule Barn, additional office space, art gallery, indoor market?

We've been told to expect surface parking until the demand reaches the level it needs to build out the parking garage.
The only parking would be north of Millwork which is 2 full blocks from this building. 14th Street is even further and it looks to UP land. A little bit of space East of mule barn is maybe 20 spaces possible. But maybe they can park on lower level .
But the “future build” site can be a pretty big lot.
The TIF proposal is new construction on the vacant land directly east of The Mastercraft building. 171 units with 11k SF of ground floor retail. Bluestone is the developer, they have a number of infill apartment projects around Omaha. Roughly $30.5 million project, requesting about $3.5 million in TIF.
I like this design with the slight angulations better than the blockiness of Bluestone's last project (Bos), but have a hard time seeing it as more than a cheaply designed warehouse for people. Really wish Bluestone would use higher quality materials and put more effort than just placing a big box.
All that said, I am glad this area is being developed and Bluestone does a good job getting the dirt moving.

I am in the same boat, not fond of the design (except the courtyard, I love that!), but glad there is already residential housing in play. Construction can happen as spring of this year (that would mean it starts this month which sounds optimistic). Parking situation is interesting; will be surface parking in a lot north, which is slated for development in the future, with a reference of a future parking structure that will be in the Commons at some future date. I like that they will have a central parking structure for the district rather than each building having its own. One interesting this that stood out to me is the submission states that the area is well served by public transit. Is that correct? Based on my reading of the Metro maps, there are no buses that go to this area for at least a few blocks.

Am I out of touch in laughing in how comically sad these prices are for 13th & Nicklous area, I get what they’re trying to do, but JFC, really hope North Omaha residents fight to keep this kind of takeover south

Thanks for the pictures. It's been a while since I last drive by, but it's looking good. I like what they did with the water tank. This is probably my favorite 'district' under development right now, so I appreciate the update!

I saw on Facebook that Hutch is leaving Midtown Crossing for Millwork Commons at the Ashton Building. I think it is more fitting, but it is another blow to Midtown Crossing for sure. In the spirit of keeping it positive, I put it in this thread to avoid sullying the MC thread with a post about another business leaving.
