I never thought NU would have a AD that could be compared to Steve Pederson. Then we got Shawn Eichorst. I am very very good with Bill Moos having job security.

AS I read this I thought you were going to compare Moos to SP. Glad I finished the sentence.Greg S wrote: Tue Jun 09, 2020 7:05 pm I never thought NU would have a AD that could be compared to Steve Pederson. Then we got Shawn Eichorst. I am very very good with Bill Moos having job security.

The crazy part of the SP hire is that nearly everyone thought it was a GREAT hire at the time. His background and Husker ties set the stage and what ended up on it was way too much ego and not enough common sense.
For the record NEBUGEATER does not equal BUGEATER !!!!!!!

I really liked Bill Byrne and was bummed when we left. Then we hired Steve. I will fully admit I thought it was a great hire and was very excited to have him back. I could not have been more wrong....nebugeater wrote: Tue Jun 09, 2020 7:47 pmAS I read this I thought you were going to compare Moos to SP. The virus is breaking out on college football teams right and left. 30 players on national champion LSU now quarantined. I knew the college football season was going to crash and burn and come to an ugly end but I sure did not see it happening this quick. We ain't never even going to make it to the first game before the season gets shut down. It would not surprise me if Nebraska is having Covid problems and just keeping it on the down low. They went about this all wrong. They call themselves institutions of higher learning but they sure don't act like it.

Schools, public buildings, private business can do all they can while their employees and students are in the building, but there's nothing controlling what they do outside of there and they can easily pick it up somewhere out there. Like what we're seeing with college football teams, I think the NBA might get started up a tad too late and enough players could have it before they can even restart. Or they might find out when they test everybody at the door that enough of them have it. They're doing everything they can to get it finished, but if you read a summary of their plan, you can still see holes where it can get in and spread around.

I heard this on ESPN today and it is interesting that the players don't totally trust the coaches. On the side of the country, the Los Angeles Times reported that 30 football players from UCLA were demanding that a "third-party health official" be present at all football activities to ensure coronavirus prevention protocols were being followed.
The players are also asking for whistleblower protections to be provided for anyone who wanted to report violations of any guidelines, as well as the ability to make decisions in regard to personal health without consequences in terms of loss of scholarship or retaliation.

Too much money to be lost if the huskers don’t run out on the field. The football team is the financial engine for the entireAD. No women’s sport save VB makes enough to pay its costs. No men’s sport besides FB and BB does either. Title 9 prevents financial reform because the FB scholarship load means a lot of women’s teams that are black holes of loss would normally get cut or changed to club sports can’t be.
Too much pressure on schools like NU to play football to not have teams cut corners. I wouldn’t trust the AD if I was a player either.

After all of this is said and done, I could see both schools and the NCAA making some tough decisions on how many sports they require or offer.bigredmed1 wrote: Sun Jun 21, 2020 6:18 pm Too much money to be lost if the huskers don’t run out on the field. What does a small state school like Nebraska currently offer 22 sports (9 men's, 13 women's) while a much larger school with a much more fertile donor base like The University of Texas only offer 16? Think of how much money Nebraska could save if they pared their offerings down to something like 16. If I were participating in a sport like Tennis or gymnastics, I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable now. The Big Ten schools seem to offer more sports, by and large, than schools in some other conferences, but I'm not sure this is sustainable going forward.
Same token, why does a school like UNO have to offer 15 sports just to meet the D-I minimum and Title IX requirements. Title IX I get, but some of these sports simply may not be viable going forward. If UNO could simply drop Golf and Tennis for both men and women, that would certainly save on the budget and drop them from 15 sports down to 11. Then, they could focus on the men's side on the core sports of baseball, basketball, hockey, and soccer and field enough women's sports that it makes sense.

The title 9 effect was predicted way back by TO. This was due to the emphasis of absolute dollars instead of percent support. If the football coach salary is $2M because that is what they cost, then you have to pony up for that much in women’s coaches. Even if the market isn’t that high.
This causes a lot of pressure and prevents logical business plans such as cutting sports that are huge cash sucks.

I still think that there would be room to cut other men's sports and possibly their corresponding women's counterparts at every campus. Some of that would require the NCAA and conferences to show flexibility in how many sports they are requiring for both conference and D-1 membership, but honestly, some of these sports just aren't necessary at this point. They aren't highly attended. They don't bring in revenue.bigredmed1 wrote: Mon Jun 22, 2020 12:48 am The title 9 effect was predicted way back by TO. I point to UNO in this scenario. They cut football and wrestling due to Title IX and budget to move to D-1. There was alot of debate on that, but at the same time had to add men's soccer and golf to be at the minimum number of D-1 sports and the minimum to compete in the Summit League.
In some ways, this is counterproductive to a small athletic department trying to succeed at the D-1 level. You're forcing them to add non-revenue sports to gain admission into a conference.
Now, soccer has turned into a solid niche sport for UNO and given their facilities, there would be no argument to be made for that to go anywhere. But, UNO probably would be in a better place if they could drop tennis and golf for both men and women and then invest a bit more on the women's side if there are any Title IX concerns in the aftermath.

As long as the two teams were a wash in terms of support, this should work. UNL is the pickle. The FB team distorts so much that none of the women’s sports that are budget dogs are going anywhere.

Huh? I don't find this to be true. But I think this entire issue may begin to cause "college sports" which are professional sports training grounds (football/basketball) start thinking about breaking away (or atleast a firewall) from colleges and the NCAA. This comes largely with the advent of paying players and the massive influx of money over the past decades. If this starts to get threatened by title IX-like issues people will start thinking outside the box.bigredmed1 wrote: Mon Jun 22, 2020 12:48 am The title 9 effect was predicted way back by TO. Yeah we could see some major changes. I have heard rumors (and they have been around since the peak realignment days) of the Power 5 conferences separating from the NCAA. You used to hear it mainly for football but it could be for the other major sports as well.

Never say never when big $$$ is involved. I don't see how paying players won't have a major factor with team chemistry. If AM is worth a hundred grand marketing-wise but gets beat out by LM in fall camp... unimaginable chaos in that QB room. Was so much better in the old days where football didn't consume every minute of a player's life with school and head coaches only got paid maybe a couple hundred K, with ticket sales easily affordable.Greg S wrote: Mon Jun 22, 2020 7:00 pm Yeah we could see some major changes. With players testing positive on many college football teams the mantra seems to be clear...... push on. It is surely a flawed plan. Sooner or later you play with fire and some players are going to die. Then ....... do they still play on?

I think history has shown TO to be wrong on this. For coaches salaries it seems to still be market and revenue driven. I haven't seen anything to show this changing.

How far back are you going with this? I went to and graduated from UNL in the mid 80's. A friend of mine (and roommate one year when we rented a house) was on the football team. The time demands then on athletes was off the charts. That was 30 years ago.

Possibly, but unless it's necessary for Big Ten membership, what would stop UNL from cutting men's golf, gymnastics, and tennis? If they cut all 3 of those sports, it could be feasible that they could cut at least one or two women's sports as well.bigredmed1 wrote: Mon Jun 22, 2020 4:27 pm As long as the two teams were a wash in terms of support, this should work. I would imagine the fact they sponsor 4 additional women's sports than men's is a big part of the make good on the women's side for having football. Some of these other sports I mentioned might be a straight wash if you cut them for both men and women.
There is certainly fat that can be cut and again, why does UNL offer 22 sports when a much more affluent and cash flush athletic department in University of Texas only offer 16?

It kind of depends on how you define cash flush? I know Texas generates large amounts of revenue, but their expenses are also significantly higher (I believe they generate over $200 million but their expenses are also over $200 million), and now that Nebraska is getting their full allotment from the Big 10 plus the new TV deal, the gap in revenue has dropped. Nebraska has been debt free for years. Here's an article where they say NU is the only Power 5 school that is debt free:omaha79 wrote: Tue Jun 23, 2020 3:02 pmPossibly, but unless it's necessary for Big Ten membership, what would stop UNL from cutting men's golf, gymnastics, and tennis? All that being said, it would not shock me if at some point NU has to drop a couple sports on both the men's and women's side.

That's fair on the debt. I guess my point is that this is a much bigger school in a bigger, more affluent state. Their alumni base would be in a better position to cut checks to endow sports should it reach the point the athletic department found itself in a huge bind. This coronavirus could be a huge game changer when schools in smaller states, with smaller alumni bases like Nebraska don't get the ticket, parking, concession, and merchandise revenue they are used to.Greg S wrote: Tue Jun 23, 2020 3:50 pmIt kind of depends on how you define cash flush? Maybe it's premature, but I'd like to see how this all shakes out in 12-18 months, especially if there is no 2020 football season or significantly altered in terms of attendance and number of games. Even a school like Nebraska wouldn't look as rosy at that point and those extra mouths to feed at the training table may not be looked upon as favorably. Sometimes, leaner can be better.

They do have the alumni base. One thing to remember with Texas, like Oklahoma that state got hit real hard with the collapse in oil prices. My in-laws lived and worked in Dallas for years but just returned to OKC for retirement. The price of oil has a huge impact on a large part of their economy. UT obviously has a tremendous alumni base. Will be interesting to watch also how it reacts to the changes underway. Hearing some of their big time donors are quite unhappy with possible changes in their athletics (including how the athletes are demanding to retire the song "The Eyes of Texas).
All of this shows how big of a move (financially)it was for Nebraska to go to the Big 10. At the time it seemed mainly for stability with all of the turmoil in the Big 12. Since then, the Big 12 has stablized (after Mizzou and aTm left the following year) and increased revenues, but the gap between each has widened. That TV deal with the Big 10 is the best and if there are issues with parking and gate revenue, the Big 10's new TV deal, along with BTN is more important than ever.

I know there are other costs with different sports teams but even just looking at coach salaries -- I think the tennis coach makes around $137K (the old coach made $70K after 30+ yrs) -- The Husker Head and asst football coaches total is close to $10 Million/year.NUub wrote: Mon Jun 22, 2020 8:06 pmNever say never when big $$$ is involved. I heard on the radio this morning that NU has already sold 66,000 tickets for the games this fall and has not yet sold to faculty or students. No drop off in ticket sales it seems. Obviously with restrictions this fall we have no idea how many will actually be allowed in but good to say the support has remained high.

I know the donations hit during it. Annual contributions required for season tickets were due April 1. I do think ticket renewals, at least the first payment started in March (for the payment plan). Right about the time of April 1 the University emailed donors that you could get an extension on the donations due to Covid.nebugeater wrote: Wed Jun 24, 2020 4:22 pmIF memory serves me correct the season ticket commitments for renewals would have all be done and over with before the COVID became "Real" in the US.Greg S wrote: Wed Jun 24, 2020 3:16 pm I heard on the radio this morning that NU has already sold 66,000 tickets for the games this fall and has not yet sold to faculty or students. No drop off in ticket sales it seems. Obviously with restrictions this fall we have no idea how many will actually be allowed in but good to say the support has remained high.

My comments above were not just for covid. Some on here when talking about Frost and his extension were questioning support for program due to the record the last few years.

I found that article to be bogus from the start. Nothing but crazy talk from crazy people. But I kept reading and it got worse when I read this-Greg S wrote: Wed Jun 24, 2020 3:16 pm I heard on the radio this morning that NU has already sold 66,000 tickets for the games this fall and has not yet sold to faculty or students. " Carter said. “I think we’re going to be playing football on Labor Day weekend against Purdue, and we’re going to have some number of fans in the stadium."
There will be no college football on Labor Day weekend. I think the government and it appears our university officials and some of the hard learned public have just crossed their fingers and decided they are going to wish the virus away. We have a better chance of going on some kind of a lock down again by Labor Day then we do sitting around watching College Football games. The reality check is that we have come to the time to put a fork in the crazy hopes of playing football and move on to hoping maybe we could have a late basketball season.
I will say that the season ticket holders would surely be easy marks for Nebraska to sell on the idea to just donate the money they paid for season tickets even if a game never was played this year. That would be a really easy sell so I suggest that Nebraska go for it!

Per the CDC, a total of 85 deaths of males between the age of 15-24 have been attributed to covid19. That is 1% of the total deaths in that group. They are 60% more likely to have died from pneumonia this year. Chances of a male between these ages to have died from covid19 is 1 in 256,000. I bet you can't find any MSM news sources that convey that fact.

It is out of line for you or anyone else to be quick and willing to gamble Nebraska football players lives on stats that are compiled from a data base that is not even 6 months old.NUub wrote: Thu Jun 25, 2020 2:12 am Per the CDC, a total of 85 deaths of males between the age of 15-24 have been attributed to covid19. How dare I post simple statistically backed facts! Oh no, I just saw some alarming data, we must stop the football players from driving cars as well! Males in that same age group are 17 times more likely to die in a car wreck than covid19!

Your facts are based on data that has not even been collected a full 6 months. Data built on such a small time period is still inconclusive. They teach that in statistics 101.

If the data is sampled over 6 months, and this sample size is not proportional to the over all sample then you are correct. For example, say you sampled the number of Canada Geese in the city over a week and extrapolated the data over the year, you would get it wrong. The year is 52 weeks and the birds are easily counted, the chances of you missing birds or getting the one week when the count is extremely high or low are substantial. If you have a 6 month sample period and a 12 month total exposure period, you have sampled 50% of the time and have access to most of the nation, then no, the sample is mostly both valid and the power statistic is likely very high reflecting the high probability that the sample size and the data drawn from it reflect actual reality.GrandpaaSmucker wrote: Thu Jun 25, 2020 4:12 amYour facts are based on data that has not even been collected a full 6 months. Re: Nebraska Football 2020
I've been saying form the start that they are going to do any mental gymnastics necessary to try to push the narrative that coronavirus is "solved" just in time for college football. This has been as clear and predictable as anything I've ever seen. No matter what the narrative is, these states want their stadiums full in a couple of months. Not having them full is catastrophic for so many athletic departments and university systems. Often, the big donors are some of the largest political players in each state.
There are just so many gears in motion right now. Unless people are literally dying in the streets in August, I expect there to be a college football season and I expect them to open the stadiums at or near 100% capacity come heck or high water.
Every other sport that had been told they can't compete, or can't have fans, that will all just wash away in time for king football and we'll all be left wondering how everything changed so quickly.

Agreed. I’ve stated previously, I’m 100% certain we’ll have an NFL season, and I’m now about 80% certain we’ll have a college football season too..omaha79 wrote: Thu Jun 25, 2020 1:29 pm I've been saying form the start that they are going to do any mental gymnastics necessary to try to push the narrative that coronavirus is "solved" just in time for college football. As it relates to the stadium seating- I still believe the seating will initially be allowed at around 50%-70% capacity. I think certain sections will be roped off for social distancing purposes.. So with Memorial Stadium, I think we’ll see crowds allowed in the 50 to 60k number to start.. Then based on how that works out, along with if/when a 2nd wave of COVID breaks, they could increase to 100% capacity before the abbreviated season ends..
We’ll see...
Ciao..LiO...Peace
Go Cowboys!

Re: Nebraska Football 2020
I've given a statistic that a TOTAL of -85- males between the ages of 15-24 in the United States for the entirety of the corona virus pandemic has died FROM corona virus and compared it (for ballpark purposes) to automobile related deaths (2018 NHTSA data) for the same demographic over a period of only 3 months and it's irrelavant? Are we going really expecting to see a surprise jump in the next 4 months to 10,000? 85 deaths! So we can't make any predictions about cv19 anywhere because our data cuts off at only 4 months.bigredmed1 wrote: Thu Jun 25, 2020 1:02 pmIf the data is sampled over 6 months, and this sample size is not proportional to the over all sample then you are correct. Right. That’s the point. If you have all the data and even though it’s only a few months, it’s still all the data, you can use this to predict the future because your power statistic is nearly 100%.

What if the players are not as stupid as some people are hoping? What if the players and their families are smart enough to know that it is not worth risking their lives and their families lives based upon suspect data and information that might be wrong? Isn't this a perfect example of where the lines of the Covid 19 epidemic merge right into the lines of the racial tensions. The white run establishment wants the players to get out on that field like they are told and if they don't they will be punished.

If the players dont want the risk (and some probably dont), then that is there call. I imagine that this is going to break along pro-potential or not. Those A list players will want time in the sun to buff their draft position. Those who are not going on, are going to be avoiding unprofitable risks.GrandpaaSmucker wrote: Thu Jun 25, 2020 4:24 pm What if the players are not as stupid as some people are hoping? As I have posted earlier, there is a clear and obvious incentive for the ADs to push football as they need the bucks. The players are right to not trust there ADs.

I was wondering if the Cornhuskers have decided not to report any Covid 19 tests that come up positive. Somehow I have a feeling they are not going to be honest or do the right thing. Seems to be how the big shots roll in this state. According to this article many programs are saying they will not be reporting on the results of their Covid 19 tests.

Re: Nebraska Football 2020
They do have confidentiality issues to consider as well as potential loss of draft status and the subsequent loss of money attached from going in the second to going in the 5th round. There is also the weight of having the entire AD's finances riding on the FB team. If they release that some key players are out with COVID19, the fan base is going to stay home. And you are a sports gambler and know how Vegas rigs the odds against NU bettors. If a couple of the key players are out for the season, Vegas can adjust, but if they are out at the last minute, then their scheme of adjusting the spread to sucker NU fans doesn't work and they lose a ton of cash over the season (game 1, and AM is surprisingly sick with a certain virus, the point spread was NU +14 on a game when a realistic odds would put NU+7. NU wins by 7 and a lot of bettors look at the odds and decide that COVID19 is going to be their excuse to not bet anymore.)GrandpaaSmucker wrote: Fri Jun 26, 2020 4:35 pm I was wondering if the Cornhuskers have decided not to report any Covid 19 tests that come up positive.
