Bookstores will hopefully survive the digital age. Its slowly diminishing. I remember when Westroads had at least 2. B. Dalton, and Waldenbooks, one other I can't recall.

Yeah I don't think they did. I really liked that store. Great selection of magazines. At Crossroads, didn't they used to be down the middle, then after the remodel in the 80's , move into an actual bay? Close to Brandeis/Younkers if memory serves. In the early 90's I used to go to the one downtown because they had out of town Sunday newspapers (pre internet era).omaha79 wrote: Mon Apr 13, 2020 1:59 pmNot that I know of, but Southroads did. I read chains are doing more poorly than individual stores, because investors in chain stores are expecting merchandise to cycle faster. I.E. when your friend tells you to read a book that came out 6 months, the chain won't have it because the investors are demanding newer books in the stores.bbinks wrote: Sun Apr 12, 2020 9:21 pm Bookstores will hopefully survive the digital age. IIRC, the one at Crossroads was east of the escalators, about half way down the hall on your left, as you were going to Younker's.Greg S wrote: Mon Apr 13, 2020 3:08 pmYeah I don't think they did. The one at Oakview was upstairs, on the left side as you walked toward the anchor, but I don't remember if it was down the Younker's or the Dillard's wing.

Drove by Crossroads today. Stores in the mall told to leave by month's end according to tv. I didn't see anything about that on B&N's door. Kaw Valley up and running.

If you're going to build something new, you don't want to leave an old chain restaurant in the way. That's why they are building a new building for Chili's in La Vista.SiliconFarmer wrote: Wed Apr 22, 2020 4:02 pmThat place was consistently packed. The last transaction was from the Lied Foundation to UNF. I thought previous articles about the Crossroads redevelopment indicated that the project would include student focused housing and other elements related to UNO. I suppose that lot would be the location for that aspect of the redevelopment of Crossroads.bldgengineer2015 wrote: Mon Apr 20, 2020 12:02 am Does anyone know why the University of Nebraska Foundation owns the former Best Buy and Applebee's just west of Crossroads?

Barnes and Noble at Oakview should do a brisk business now that it’s the only national chain bookstore left in Omaha. Crossroads is quickly becoming a major eyesore and embarrassment. Not sure if there is any quick fixes for it either, I still wouldn’t mind a casino and hotel on the site.

Rumor has it the movie theater that was committed to this project backed out due to Financial problems caused by Covid. I don’t know specifics but I’m told one or two more retailers/restaurants have done the same.
Such a shame. This whole thing was literally ready to be announced first week of April.

Unfortunate but I don't know how well it would have fared. I really like Ak-Sar-Ben Cinema, but that place isn't exactly a madhouse attendance-wise so I'm not sure how another theater this close would have done?

But I agree, the demolition of this project, mainly due to the pandemic, is quite a shame indeed..
The optimist in me hopes once we get to the other side of this crisis, these plans get new life breathed into them.. The cup half empty side sees the Crossroads sitting at it’s current state of despair for another 2-5 years...

BOOM!
$500 million plan in place to transform Omaha's Crossroads Mall area

You can take the ORBT to Crossroads, only to be greeted by a giant parking lot...SMH. Also, parking, parking everywhere.

$500 million plan in place to transform Omaha's Crossroads Mall area
After a decade of fits and starts, a new $500 million plan has emerged to transform the dying Crossroads Mall at 72nd and Dodge Streets — starting in October.
Driven by a fresh redevelopment team, the latest vision calls for a 40-acre project site to be cleared of all but two existing pieces: the Target store and the 2,200-stall parking garage to its north.
Both structures are to operate as part of the revamped campus whose high point could stretch 10 stories and is to be known as “The Crossroads.”
A different mix of uses — a heftier dose of family fun like bowling and laser tag, for example, and a smaller slice of retail shopping — is viewed as a game-changer that should help lead to this plan's success, says Chip James of Lockwood Development, a new player in the venture.
...
Various city approvals still are ahead, and the proposed layout could change some. If all goes as the developers hope, The Crossroads in its new form would open in 2024.

This looks great. I was surprised they said it could start in October? Just curious, who thinks that happens? My money is that the earliest this will start is 2021. I really really hope I am wrong.

Parking was my first thought as well...this site plan has way too much of it. One positive is that the surface lots could be easily built on, but the design as a whole is very car oriented with only minimal attention given to the pedestrian. I should not be surprised given Lockwood tried to bill Sterling Ridge as pedestrian friendly.

Yeah, this has Sterling Ridge written in the layout and design. While I am happy that Frank was able to move on finally, I am not super ecstatic about the design. Hopefully, those surface lots are filled with additional development if there is additional interest, particularly residential.Taco wrote: Wed Aug 05, 2020 8:07 pm Parking was my first thought as well...this site plan has way too much of it. Re: Crossroads - Redevelopment Plan
Here are additional details about the development (again parking lots galore):
The old shopping center is to be replaced with a series of structures containing an estimated 500,000 square feet of offices, 250 apartments, 130 senior living units, 150 hotel rooms and 200,000 square feet of retail stores.
Scattered throughout, O'Connor said, would be 150,000 square feet of "lifestyle" space such as fitness, dining and entertainment venues. Artwork, a signature plaza and about 4,000 parking spots — some surface and others in structures above and underground — also are in the plan.

Re: Crossroads - Redevelopment Plan
Not too different from the previous proposal (below). Sounds a bit more feasible in the current climate than the last one. Really wish they would have kept the retail on the perimeter instead of moving it inward and replacing it with parking.
