There it is. 5 Nebraska football players have tested positive with the virus. At least Nebraska is honest enough to admit they have a problem now.

Re: Nebraska Football 2020
Wouldn't it figure that many college football programs are making the players sign an agreement that they can not hold the school responsible if they catch the Covid. 2 Senators are submitting a bill designed to protect the players from having to sign away their rights. As shady as our Senate is right now that bill has no chance what so ever of passing. Those college kids will be left to be exploited by the colleges.

It's a tough thing to handle. Businesses are going through the same thing. I think you give the players the option whether to return or not, and even if they don't they should be able to remain on scholarship and go to classes if they chose or be able to pause it. If the player wants to play, I can see waivers being requested. You sign them all the time in sports and life.

How are they going to prove where you contracted it? How do we know if the players contracted it in April-May and have recovered with no new cases? Jumping to conclusions that we have a problem, especially in an age group with incredibly small morbidity rates (likely even smaller with given fitness levels). They could have all been asymptomatic for all we know.GrandpaaSmucker wrote: Mon Jun 29, 2020 6:32 pm Wouldn't it figure that many college football programs are making the players sign an agreement that they can not hold the school responsible if they catch the Covid. 2 Senators are submitting a bill designed to protect the players from having to sign away their rights. Some experts are saying that football players dying from the virus is almost guaranteed. Overweight players like 300 pound linemen are the most likely players to be at risk.

Football players have died of sickle cell trait. Not the disease, the trait. It is a much more demanding sport than it seems.
If you get the inflammatory side effects or you get the Coronary artery syndrome, you could easily crump during an intense preseason practice.

I think what triggered some new reporting was the people comparing the employee directory as of July 1 updates vs a month ago and some educated guesses on who is gone.Greg S wrote: Thu Jul 02, 2020 10:11 amnebugeater wrote: Thu Jul 02, 2020 8:48 amThat was announced around Mid JuneGreg S wrote: Wed Jul 01, 2020 7:35 pm Heard today NU Athletics had to lay-off off about 20 employees. The College football season just took another bullet. Kansas just had a dozen football players test positive and they have now shut down and put the entire team into quarantine for 2 weeks.

Lots of talk today about Scott Frost being on the hot seat saying that if he does not win this year he is out. I agree that Scott Frost did not work out and probably never will and that he needs to go but I would bet the farm that he is still here next season. First of all I think the season this year does not get played so Frost will get a free pass due to the virus. Second I think that we have a somewhat corrupt good old boy system down in Lincoln now with Moos and Frost and they will both team up to drag their miserable existence along for at least a couple more years. I hope I am wrong and the season is played because I sure would like to cash in at the Casino betting against Nebraska this fall.
One of a number of stories predicting Frost will get fired- https://fansided.com/2020/07/08/nebrask ... eat-watch/
A Lincoln TV station has a poll asking if Frost should be on the hot seat. I voted yes because well I'm not blind or drunk on the Husker Koolaide. The results so far did not surprise me. 22% voted yes and 78% voted no. Husker fans don't really know much about football but they are loyal as dogs!

Re: Nebraska Football 2020
I've been pretty critical of Frost, but honestly, what else are you going to do at this point? I'll go a step further. Frost will be here 2-3 more years regardless of record. As noted, this year is out the window at this point. Barring something like a winless season, I can't see it changing the status.
They've hitched their wagon to Frost. All involved are tied to him. So, he's going to be given every opportunity to succeed. As an alum, he'll get a longer leash than Pelini or Riley ever did. And, after 20+ years of absolute bungling of coaching searches/hires, Frost was supposed to be the easiest slam dunk. So far, it's not looking great, but who would you even get if you bailed on him after 3-4 years? It's no longer a desirable job whatsoever. It's actually seen as a more hassle than it's worth job in coaching circles. Just because you have a rabid fanbase and support, doesn't make it automatically a great job when the expectations are high at a place that's not easy to recruit to.
Honestly, Nebraska Athletics has been one of the most mismanaged entities I've ever seen. If this were a fortune 500 company, they'd be out of business by now. They've taken an elite program and ran it into the ground with poor hire after poor hire.
But, back to Frost, look at how much he's owed. Bottom line, Nebraska probably won't be able to afford to buy him out anytime soon, especially if they can still get people to buy tickets. With everything goin on with Corona and possibly not being able to have games or sell tickets, there simply won't be the will or cash to buy out another coach, even if a donor stepped up, it won't be a good look when NU may even have to be cutting sports in the near future.

I agree. Since Frank Solich was fired in 2003, it’s been a 3 ring circus in Lincoln.. I don’t think, in my memory, I’ve ever seen an elite, Blueblood college football program turn into Kansas in such a short period of time..omaha79 wrote: Thu Jul 09, 2020 9:04 am They've hitched their wagon to Frost. And let’s face it, Frost has only had 2 seasons on the job.. Even Riley got 3. Throw this season out..I believe, at minimum, Frost will get another 2 full seasons to show progress. Remember last year, he was even signed to a contract extension..
Realistically, for the “Frost must go” crowd, he’s tied to this job at least until 2023. Again, at minimum...

Re: Nebraska Football 2020
The rebuild has been huge. The recruiting under both Pelini and Riley had become a mess. So, it's not all on Frost. Same time, he and his staff have directly lost a handful of games (think both Colorado games, Troy, Purdue last year, among others) with extremely questionable coaching and clock management decisions. If I had to grade Frost, it would be a qualified D grade at this point while acknowledging that he was always going to have to learn to be a Big Ten coach on the job and the program was in a huge mess. Still, while he can't be totally blamed, he's been part of the problem.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Thu Jul 09, 2020 9:43 amI agree. Both of his first 2 seasons should have been roughly 6-7 win seasons with even mediocre in game coaching. Some of those games have turned into complete coaching meltdowns though. The narrative around here would be much different if Frost had a 6 win season followed by a 7 win season in year 2. There would at least be a feeling he's moving in the right direction on the field.
Last year, the schedule basically gift wrapped a 7-8 win season. Those losses to Colorado, Indiana, Purdue, and Iowa were flat out ugly.

Just no more contract extensions for any coach at NU unless we are intentionally keeping them till the end of their extended contract. I am happy with a coach getting extra years, but firing them after 1 of the now 4 year deal is just painfully stupid. In light of the NU budget tightening, and regular employees not getting raises or even a sense that their jobs are safe, tossing this kind of money around is a good reason to nuke the entire AD admin staff.

Also easy to forget the unbelievably bad football culture that settled in under Riley. NU was not just a poorly coached team with poorly developed players, it was also OK to quit in games and retain your depth chart place. Would really like to see a loose depth chart from week-week and haven't seen great evidence that is in place and we should have much better overall depth. I don't know what the motivation level will be like at all for football this season... for the players OR the fans.

It was extremely frustrating. The Colorado loss was a head scratcher. NU completely dominated the 1st half and are up 17-0 at halftime..then a complete meltdown in the 2nd half. Purdue and Indiana were flat out ugly as you stated. For me, as a fan, the Iowa Loss cut deep because the Huskers, just like the year prior, really could have won that game- they were 50/50 games that could have gone either way, and NU lost both of them...omaha79 wrote: Thu Jul 09, 2020 10:42 am Last year, the schedule basically gift wrapped a 7-8 win season. Just imagine how different the narrative would be now if NU was something like 7-6 in year one with a low end bowl win and then maybe 8-5 (with a bowl loss) or 9-4 with a bowl win last year. 6 and 8 in the regular season were both imminently attainable last year.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Thu Jul 09, 2020 12:35 pmIt was extremely frustrating. I wonder how much the thunderstorm called game upset the cart for year 1. You would like to think it didn't do much but part of me says it was more of disruption then we will ever know. Going into the Colorado game as now your first game. All kinds of talk about what they should have done with the storm and the crowd. Plenty of talk about the rescheduling or another appointment. The season would have not been night and day different but I do believe starting off on the right foot with hopefully a win might have sent a different tone that would have helped moving forward.

I agree -- quit giving coaching extension to coaches who havent proven themselves at UNL. We are now knocking on the door of the middle of July. All the wishful thinking of the fools and science hating morons will not have the power to kill the virus and make it safe for the college football season to start in August. But hey no need for them to admit just yet that they are dead wrong because they got a new idea. Why not eliminate the non-conference games and an early conference game or two and start the season in October. That will give them another 2 month window for the virus to magically disappear.Greg S wrote: Thu Jul 09, 2020 3:47 pm Big Ten will be conference games only for Fall Sports:

There ain't going to be any college football season final answer. The science and the math says the virus does not go away quickly once it is going strong like it is now.
The points on the Nebraska vs Cincinnati non conference game had Nebraska favored by 6. Nebraska would of lost that game by more then 6 points. If there is an upside to cancelling the non conference games it is that effectively it saved Nebraska from some humiliation and embarrassment.
You have to give props for to the Ivy league for having enough common sense, honesty and integrity to man up and admit that is was going to be a disaster to try to have a season this fall. The Ivy league is supposed to be made up of colleges that are a step above most other colleges and in this case they lived up to the billing.

Fun fact: Thru 7/4/20, in Nebraska and surrounding states Wyoming, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas, and Missouri (Colorado not providing), there have been zero deaths from covid19 for males between 15-24 out of a total of 543 non-covid deaths.

Re: Nebraska Football 2020
Not so fun fact: 4 months ago our president said we have plenty of tests and that anyone that wants a test can get one. Yesterday they ran out of tests or were short of tests right here in Omaha Nebraska and all over the country. People waited in lines for hours to get tested and then were sent home because they were out of tests. People are sitting around all over the country waiting days and even up to a week to get their test results back. Meanwhile in a half baked plan to force the start of sports again we have thousands of athletes all over the country that are not even sick taking tests and getting results back quickly.NUub wrote: Fri Jul 10, 2020 12:23 pm Fun fact: Thru 7/4/20, in Nebraska and surrounding states Wyoming, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas, and Missouri (Colorado not providing), there have been zero deaths from covid19 for males between 15-24 out of a total of 543 non-covid deaths.

Data for today shows (by far) a record 823,000 tests nationally. Any shortage must be the result of a massive spike in demand as there is no obvious dip in daily test counts. I'll be you there is no other country that can even get close to 823,000 tests in one day.

Re: Nebraska Football 2020
Is anyone holding a gun to these player’s heads?
Here’s a fun consideration ... Any NCAA football player has a 1.6% chance of making an NFL team. If the season is cancelled, those already unlikely odds are greatly diminished. So it seems many skilled players will be willing to roll the dice for the chance this year.
Can we get a show of hands of those who think these kids aren’t already going around to bars or partying with other kids their age this weekend? Or any weekend? They are more likely to catch virus from the parties than a football field.

You're nuts if you don't think the athletes will be pressured. That any player who chooses to sit out and take their scholarship without playing won't get blackballed by their team and coaches in the future.Omahacritic wrote: Fri Jul 10, 2020 10:23 pm Is anyone holding a gun to these player’s heads?

Moos has been transparent in his total desperation and greed. He's pushing for a 12 game Big Ten season because he flat out said that with only 10 games, NU loses out on a couple of home games and indicated, "that's significant revenue."
This is purely about that sweet, sweet cash. No more, no less. The cash the student athletes see none of. Young athletes aren't likely to die from this, but if even one player dies of Covid 19 on any team in this country, there will be a reckoning.

Two players at Rice died of sickle cell trait during pre-season conditioning. The entire NCAA div 1 now screens all their athletes for it. Got to know that the NCAA would overreact to such a thing.
The players rightfully feel pressured to play. NU can’t operate without those Big Red Bucks. No football revenue, no non revenue sports and big title 9 problems vs big deficits.

Well, well. College football seems to be becoming a microcosm of the real world. A handful of players didn't play it smart and got sick, putting all the other players at risk. Next thing you know, too many of them will get sick and we won't even hold a football season. Take it to the real world, those same types are getting sick and getting other people sick, meaning we're going to be holding onto this life for much longer than had we played it safe and smart in the beginning, followed those guidelines and recommendations. I'm FINALLY seeing that I'd have to say around half of people, anecdotally, are wearing a mask in public spaces. Took forever to get to that point, and well, then there's the other half that will probably never do that.

Are we blaming everyone that gets sick stupid? Also, how is Moos being greedy here? Is he possibly trying to shore up an athletic department that has already seen elimination of various employed positions and other possibly more severe cuts to other athletic programs?Busguy2010 wrote: Sat Jul 11, 2020 4:51 pm Well, well. No, no. I'm not saying everybody that doesn't wear one is stupid. Stubborn, most definitely. And I recognize there are some who can't, but very few. And I'll bet ya they aren't the ones out acting all careless... And if they are, then yes, they would be stupid, or careless ones. There's really two choices: to try not to get sick, or not try not to get sick. And if wearing a mask and social distancing really does give us the best chance, then it ought to be a no brainer. I still don't think, even with those measures in place, it would be a good idea to have the stadium at really any capacity. especially with the product the Huskers have put out in recent years. A big NOT worth.NUub wrote: Sat Jul 11, 2020 6:49 pmAre we blaming everyone that gets sick stupid? Also, how is Moos being greedy here? Where did I say they wouldn’t be pressured? Stop the hate and you will stop putting words into peoples’s mouth.omaha79 wrote: Sat Jul 11, 2020 12:51 pmYou're nuts if you don't think the athletes will be pressured. Players can choose to play or choose not to play. If they choose not to play, at worst they have the same chances a non-student athlete has. And holy cow pies ... they are football players. You think they haven’t felt pressure before? It probably comes from their parents more than coaches or peers. And these players have no doubt been out to parties ... the likelihood is far greater they catch Virus from their party friends. Where will be their reckoning?
As for Moos ... he’s got a few million in revenue bonds that have to be paid this year due to stadium expansion and other building projects. He also has basketball and women sports to finance. Remember Title IX? Can he meet the financial obligations without a full season?
Another thought ... one game at Nebraska provides the revenue to finance the entire season for smaller teams. Losing non-conference games (across the nation) might kill off numerous football programs. Not saying that it’s our concern. But it is likely something NCAA has to consider.
