We got 5/8” here in north-central Douglas County earlier this morning (7/20). Looking forward to getting more, hopefully.

Re: 2020 Severe Weather Thread
Looks like some decent rainfall in much of the area late tonight/early tomorrow morning with additional rainfall tomorrow as the cold front comes through (with possibly a few strong/severe storms as well). Heaviest rainfall will end up south of town probably but at this point we will take anything we can get...

So we got a little rain, but this really turned out to be another bust, as they were talking inches. Only .15" at Eppley.

Looks like after tomorrow, dewpoints will be on a steady decline and will settle around 60 and stay there for the foreseeable forecast. What a relief.

More than a month beyond summer solstice where Omaha reaches a yearly maximum of around 73 degree solar elevation, continually falling to where it currently only reaches 67 degrees at around 1:30PM.

Do you all have the app called “Sunrise & Set” on your phone? If not, I’d recommend trying it out. It gives you all of that fun info based on your GPS location and date. I’m sure there are other apps that do the same, but this one is handy when you want to look ahead at future dates by simply pressing an arrow > or < to move forward or back. Edit: I take that back, it doesn’t give sun angle. That must have been some other app. Just sunrise, sunset, civil twilight (dusk & Dawn) & total daylight and solar noon plus a compassBusguy2010 wrote: Wed Jul 29, 2020 4:23 pmI thought I was noticing the shadows were visibly longer. Re: 2020 Severe Weather Thread
I'm wary of downloading apps, but I've definitely done a lot of research on the sunrise and sunset. I've developed the position that we shouldn't observe daylight savings time (another one of them government over-reaching things, huh) and should run on standard time all year. Very unpopular opinion, I know. DST doesn't change the amount of time the sun is out, it just shifts our clocks an hour later so we feel like the sun is out longer. It really is one of those very out-dated concepts that for some reason nearly all of america observes. If people want to have more daylight after work, we should implore our workplaces to go to work an hour earlier so we can get off an hour earlier. Sorry, just when I see sunrise and sunset, DST comes to mind, and I hate DST.GetUrban wrote: Wed Jul 29, 2020 5:46 pm Do you all have the app called “Sunrise & Set” on your phone? Re: 2020 Severe Weather Thread
I love the effects of DST, but you’re right it could probably be handled simply with more flexible work schedules to allow people to take advantage of being able to better utilize daylight as needed. As far as government over-reach, that makes it sound more evil than it really is. Laws are just a consensus reached by duly-elected officials after debate, occasionally with some influence wielded by outside special interests, but kept in-check by our system of checks and balances. That is when the system is working properly, which it doesn’t seem to be lately. Just my opinion. But DST probably makes sense for scheduling millions of workers who have to interact with each other on a scheduled basis.Busguy2010 wrote: Wed Jul 29, 2020 6:10 pmI'm wary of downloading apps, but I've definitely done a lot of research on the sunrise and sunset. Reference for solar positioning calculations https://equation-of-time.info/calculati ... on-of-time
People don't realize how non-uniformly the earth revolves around the sun. For instance, certain times of the year near solstice, both sunset and sunrise might both get later or earlier, as opposed to logically assuming the both close or expand evenly- or that thinking solar noon/midnight are always at the same time of day.

Re: 2020 Severe Weather Thread
Yes, I was even thinking that yesterday, even though it got up to 86, you could still feel a bit of coolness in the air. Gotta be the dew point. Now today it will be the same dew point, but 2 degrees cooler. Tomorrow will be a bit sticky, but after that, dewpoints in the 50's and temperatures pressed to reach 80. It's been such a hot summer that I can't even remember the last time it felt as good as it will feel next week.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Fri Jul 31, 2020 4:22 pmI picked a good time to be on staycation. Just looked back and May as a whole and all the way to the end of it was below average, then on June 1st it's loke a switch Wes flipped and we've been well above average ever since.

Yes. When looking back, much of May felt like March.. Then once we got to June, the switch flipped and it’s been pretty much a dry hot box ever since...Busguy2010 wrote: Fri Jul 31, 2020 4:51 pm Just looked back and May as a whole and all the way to the end of it was below average, then on June 1st it's loke a switch Wes flipped and we've been well above average ever since.

Now THIS is the rain I've been waiting for all summer... In a popcorn cell, not thunder or anything, just HEAVY rain right now in Central Omaha, may not even register across all town. Wouldn't doubt if I got about a half inch in 10 minutes... And now the sun is out.

We ended up with 0.80” from that last little storm. It was traveling straight north to south and had quite a bit of lightning just south of Blair heading into Ft Calhoun. Seems like the lightning quickly diminished as it made its way south down into Omaha.

Officially .19" at Eppley, but often the NWS gauge there doesn't paint the whole picture, as the airport really isn't anywhere near where most people experience rain in this city. I was happy with that rain yesterday.

Beautiful. Tonight could get down to 56 and tomorrow 55, both in the neighborhood of the coolest temperatures on record for this exact time of year. I'll be sleeping with my bedroom windows open and a blanket or two. Enjoying this break to the fullest before summer comes back through at the end of the week and for the foreseeable future after that.
