Re: Nebraska Football 2020
I could see this going a couple ways
1) The three conferences that decided to play, play a full season and move on with the playoff without the Big Ten and Pac 12. Then in the spring, the Big 10 and Pac 12 will have no reason to play.
2) The three start the season now and get through a couple games before finding out it ain't gonna work, and they tentatively plan to continue the rest of the season in the spring, aligning their remaining schedules with the other two. The season would continue the weekend after the Super Bowl.
3) All conferences drop the season (or only play a few games) and do not play in the spring either.
I personally think they should be able to play safely. Just for the love of god, no fans. And I don't think there's any way a spring season makes sense unless it involves all the conferences as in scenario 2.

Re: Nebraska Football 2020
Oh and right now it does seem like a mistake to cancel the season when the other three sound full steam ahead. I think the BIG Ten thought they had enough influence that if they canceled, they all would cancel... It's no wonder the Pac 12 followed suit. If the other three can successfully navigate their seasons, it will be a disaster for the Big Ten.
I think those two canceling only made the decision to continue easier for the other three. 40% of the field voluntarily retracted from the play off discussion? Yes please! No Ohio State, Wisconsin, Michigan, none of the heavy weights from the Pac 12 cluttering up the path? Sign me up!

Re: Nebraska Football 2020
The Big 10 got it right and still they were way too late in finally doing what had to be done. It won't end well for the conferences trying to play. Guaranteed to blow up. There is only one reason that those other conferences have failed to cancel in the face of all science and evidence. Politics. The Trump confederacy is strong among the states of the remaining conferences. The Trump confederacy is strong in Nebraska and rumors have been strong that our own governor was one of the puppet masters behind the curtain working Frost and Moos strings. Our gov has been talking pure nonsense for months about games and fans in Lincoln this fall and he was bent on seeing it happen.Busguy2010 wrote: Fri Aug 14, 2020 11:23 am Oh and right now it does seem like a mistake to cancel the season when the other three sound full steam ahead. The Big 10 will come out of this looking like they made a good and competent decision. The conferences that are pushing on will expose themselves for the fools they really are.

Re: Nebraska Football 2020
Are you trying to make the case to take over Coast to Coast for Art Bell and George Noory? I would love to know the source of your 'rumors'. Nebraska was right to present a pushback to the B10 decision of cancelling everything in an attempt to at least curry up a few OOC games. No football for Lincoln is absolutely crippling for its economy, upwards of $300M. Many fans, including me, would have been more frustrated if they didn't even attempt to make their case. As it is, the country's starved sports eyes will be completely glued to the SEC/B12/ACC with whatever games they play and Kevin Warren will be feeling the true 'hot seat'.GrandpaaSmucker wrote: Fri Aug 14, 2020 11:42 am The Trump confederacy is strong in Nebraska and rumors have been strong that our own governor was one of the puppet masters behind the curtain working Frost and Moos strings.
Winter football is just a temporary pacifier for fans/ticketholders/players.

Re: Nebraska Football 2020
Yeah I think Kevin Warren is not looking good here. His interview on BTN (which is obviously a homer network) was a disaster. He flat out could not answer the question on why the Big 10 released a schedule and less than a week later cancelled the season, on what had had changed between the 2. Dave Revsine, who was doing the interview clearly thought Warren should be able to answer and asked it twice. It was just an awful look for the entire 30 minutes.
So different from when Jim Delaney was in charge. He would meet with the universities on any big items, and you'd hear how the vote was unanimous. The schools would all publicly back the commish. On this we obviously saw NU come out with other ideas, but then OSU too. You also had Penn State and Harbaugh at Michigan speaking out while these discussions were going on.

The Big 10 is pinning its hopes on playing football in the spring.
Will the Big 10's reasons for canceling fall football disappear by then? Scott Frost doesn't think so.

Yes it is interesting... I keep thinking it is only a game. Also they seem to leave out all the other sports when discussing and NU fans seem to overlook the academic/ research reasons why it is good for NU to be in the BIg10jag42 wrote: Fri Aug 14, 2020 3:00 pm I might be the only one, but I've been getting some good laughs from the Omaha World Herald sports columnists and national sports media going overboard these past few days.

Re: Nebraska Football 2020
I just don't see any way it could be possible unless the other three conferences decide to do it, too. If they play and crown a champion the playoff way, there's just no reason for the Big Ten to play in the Spring. Unless they want to ditch the playoff for a season, pick a champion the old fashioned way, do the same with the spring seasons and just have co-champions. That'd be lame, but these are some different circumstances.Dark Eyes wrote: Fri Aug 14, 2020 1:24 pm The Big 10 is pinning its hopes on playing football in the spring.

Ask the players right now if they would like to play Joker State Juco 8 times in a row and they would probably soil themselves. It isn't about championships right now, it's about practicing in preparation to play games and get on the field.

What it really looks like to me ... The Presidents of each University intervened and told the AD’s they will not be playing. It’s all politics.
If they Dane out and gave their concrete reasons I might feel differently. But they behind the nebulous “it isn’t safe” without giving a definition of “safer”.
But I’ll also say it doesn’t matter that much to me. But I stand by my earlier assertion .... Big 10 football will now be 5 years behind the SEC.

Dr Zatechka commenting on a medical study that evidently factored greatly into the B10 shutting down football.
If the B12/SEC/ACC make it through the football season relatively unscathed, there will be rows of pitchforks out for the conference leadership.

Still gravity among some B10 schools to try and play games this fall. They can't afford to sit on the sidelines and watch the B12/ACC/SEC play and gather up all the recruits while making TV money. Supposedly the B10 just needs Wisc/Mich to commit and have 6 teams being able to play each other twice for a total of a 10-game season (no championship).

Warren's son playing football in the SEC is really bad form. I'm not for football this fall necessarily. But, him taking a hard line on the Big Ten playing football but then allowing his own son to go play and saying it was a tough family decision is terrible in terms of optics. He should be fired immediately.

I’d say Warren isn’t ready to fall on his sword. He either backs the Presidents at the Universities or he loses his job. But he is probably all for playing. The “tough family decision” is basic Public Relations speak.

I haven't really seen a consensus on that. Last night was listening on radio and they indicated that all of the AD's had voted to play and that the president's, not unanimously but a majority had voted against it.
Warren and the Big 10's communication on this matter has definitely been off. Not a great look.

"Not a great look" is the parents of Nebraska football players threatening to sue to the Big 10 or their Commissioner. Were watching right now in real time the Nebraska football program once again take itself down a notch. All this crying and blubbering has nothing to do what so ever with the Nebraska Football team ever showing up for a BIg 10 season without getting its head handed to it. Lets see the kind of enthusiasm for winning football games that we are seeing in this state wide cry festival.

Re: Nebraska Football 2020
It really sounds like there wasn't a lot (if any) communication between commissioners about their intentions. If there were, I think the B10 commissioner would have at least taken a deep breath and either waited longer to cancel the season, or had not canceled the season yet at this point. I bet within the conference there is a lot of wishing they had felt it out a little longer and had not canceled so soon, as there is no "un-canceling" the season, right? The way it was, they still had two to three weeks to think about it, and they could have moved the season back a month if they needed more time. They are sweating bullets hoping and waiting for the other three cancel. If they go on with a season and everything turns out more or less okay, this will be an absolute nightmare for the B10.

I don't know what the B10 is waiting for and why it is making winter football sound so rosy. With the likelihood of dying in an alcohol related fatality at 10x the probability from a college age individual dying from covid19, why does the B10 brass believe that the situation will be all that much different come winter when respiratory diseases thrive? Do they somehow believe this virus will be eradicated by then? Horrendous decision-making here.

I found it interesting that they are closing the Training Table cafeteria when they have talked about the ability to keep their athletes safe in The ‘athletic bubble’
51 staff members will be furloughed from Sept. 1 through Dec. 31. All other staffers in the department will take a 10% salary reduction during the same period.
Nebraska also is closing its training table cafeteria located in Memorial Stadium until further notice, according to an NU spokesman. Athletes who live on campus have access to the open dining halls around campus.

If athletes are not in training, they don’t need a separate dining hall. Nor a bubble. Ah but Frost and his coaches ‘sold’ the kids on coming to NU in part on that Nutritious food of the Training Table. It has been a big part of the program for years. Now they are going to take it away — don’t be surprised to see kids leaving.Omahacritic wrote: Sat Aug 22, 2020 11:55 am

As for pinching pennies Frost and his Coaches could take a bigger salary cut then 10% as I guess they aren’t working either. Right?

B10 probably not happy that Bill Moos let out that all the ADs were on board with playing fall sports. So now it was either up to the presidents or Kevin Warren with no transparency as usual other than a shoddy medical report on myocarditis. This all smells political, unfortunately.

Here is the report that every B10 AD wanted to play football.
https://buckeyeswire.usatoday.com/2020/ ... in-warren/
Here is where Mich Gov Whitmer is blocking the state colleges and HS from playing football this year.
https://newsla.localad.com/2020/08/20/m ... ll-season/
Here is where Minn Senator Klobuchar is doing what she can to block football for Minnesota.
Must be nice in the B12, SEC, and too many schools in the ACC to not have to deal with government individuals in power injecting into this. Not seeing much regarding play amongst a few B10 schools this fall but hopeful there is still time, especially if OSU is still involved. OSU is on schedule to lose $130M from shutting down fall sports.

For the nay votes, I think it would be NU, Iowa, OSU, Michigan and maybe Penn State. Those schools have all been pretty vocal about playing.
There seems to be a real divide between Michigan and Michigan State on this.
I just don't see fall football happening with any of the Big 10 schools this fall. I think that door is closed. We'll see how it goes with the 3 other conferences, if they make it work, I could see the Big 10 playing some version early in the year.

It will be a waste of time to do spring football, unless the other conferences end up shutting down this fall after all. Plus it’s possible the virus might still be going strong in the spring too, although the rate of spread seems to be finally slowing down now, except at some universities.Omahacritic wrote: Tue Aug 25, 2020 9:13 pm Big 10 is done. Looks like a poor attempt to marry the Big 10 cancelling football with the Huskers getting a great local player to join the program. Those two events have nothing to do with each other. Nebraska bad mouthing the Big 10 has such a bad look to it. What we need now is to find a quarterback that can get the ball to this 6ft 4in tight end so that we can start scoring some points and maybe just possibly win our first Big 10 Championship. The clout and respect in the Big 10 that Nebraska believes it so deserves has to be earned. We have not done that yet.

Nebraska calling out the B1G was not alone in doing so. The issue is they were first.GrandpaaSmucker wrote: Thu Aug 27, 2020 9:55 amLooks like a poor attempt to marry the Big 10 cancelling football with the Huskers getting a great local player to join the program. Those two events have nothing to do with each other. Nebraska bad mouthing the Big 10 has such a bad look to it. We don't need it.nebugeater wrote: Thu Aug 27, 2020 7:09 amWell since this is for the 2021 class and LSU was big time in the mix I am not sure what your point is.NUub wrote: Wed Aug 26, 2020 10:18 pm Makes me wonder what would have happened if this was a two horse race between Nebraska and a team from a conference that planned to play fall ball?
What we need now is to find a quarterback that can get the ball to this 6ft 4in tight end so that we can start scoring some points and maybe just possibly win our first Big 10 Championship. The clout and respect in the Big 10 that Nebraska believes it so deserves has to be earned. We have not done that yet.
For the record NEBUGEATER does not equal BUGEATER !!!!!!!

Re: Nebraska Football 2020
The Big 10 says the bogus Husker parents lawsuit has no merit.
....and that is putting it nicely!
