Yeah for a bit there it seemed it was coming down harder than at any point this year!

For once, the local weather meteorologists missed on this one..

We got some decently heavy rain most of the morning here in west Omaha.. Now at 1:45pm, it’s sunny and humid. Welcome back Summer...

I just checked our rain gauge in Bellevue and we got about 1.95 in from 8:30 - 11:30. I think that we may have gotten more than others in the area, but our back yard was partially flooded. This was definitely more rain than we have gotten at any other point this season.

Looks like Eppley is reporting a mere .07" for Omaha, so we will still read as pretty far behind. But I think we all know the majority of the city got some pretty significant rainfall. Had to have been at least an inch in my neck of the woods.

We keep getting these mystery rain events lately. Last night I don't even recall a rain chance- granted it was WeatherBug. Will be interesting to check out the rain gauge as I heard it come down pretty hard for a few minutes.

I was surprised to wake up to saturated grounds too. When I checked the NWS forecast late in the evening last night it said 20% chance, then just before bed around 2, they said 0% chance. Not that I'm complaining

I was joking with my wife and kids yesterday, every day there is a 50% chance of rain. It will either rain or it won't rain haha

Would be interesting to know what number of those warnings were actually for Omaha. Each of the last two years at least, it has been 0.

In face, I do believe our last tornado warning was in 2016. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I don't know for sure which counties, or how many, but it has to be at least a half-dozen, but my gut says more than that.

I also lost power. It looks like we were under a severe thunderstorm warning. There was a pretty gnarly looking gust front thunderstorm just to our North, and it appeared the winds we experienced were part of the secondary outflow of the storm, not the storm itself, obviously, as we got no rain or thunder or anything really, just the wind gusts.

That was some serious unexpected wind in north-central DO CO! We lost some big branches off an already weak tree. Small branches are down all over the place. Power only flickered off and on a few times but stayed on after it passed. No rain whatsoever. :(

Currently the OPPS web site says 50,000+ customers without power across their entire area.

Weather is getting weird, that fast-moving front looked like death to the NW around 8:30am. But no rain or thunder at all.

That storm ripped us off. All that bluster and only power outages and downed limbs to show for it, plus no rain. I wonder if that would qualify as a dry Derecho? Looks like Iowa City and the Quad cities are about to get it now.

Strange storm indeed. In my area of west Omaha, we didn’t get much of anything..a little wind and rain, but no power outage..

I have a friend who lives in Bennington and she says they got hit with 80mph winds. She said it came on very quickly too..

50,000 OPPD customers losing power is huge. Sounds like it caught everyone, including the local meteorologists off guard...

Yeah thats what I was saying about the outflow. It was a significant storm, just we got hit by the tail end of it.

Oh yeah - Derecho hit Omaha --> Des Moines to Chicago to Indianapolis - with some big damage all the way along.

Wow. That’s a long way! I think the definition of Derecho says 400 miles minimum.

We don't know where it formed either. It was pretty dam impressive by the time it got to Omaha, so I'd assume the measuring could have started much farther west of here too.

Yeah it really wasn't a bad day to be without power, and I was really thankful it wasn't like Sunday. I just cooked outside and sat in the shade. Luckily the storm gave me plenty of sticks to pick up for something to do.

That is pretty impressive! Storms are really just the signature of what is happening at different levels in the atmosphere. Sounds obvious, but Derechos happen when the low level jet stream comes down real low, closer to ground level. If you have the app called “Windy” it shows you the wind speeds at all of the different levels above the surface. At any given time, the upper level jet stream can have winds moving up to 150mph.

I have a good friend who grew up in Cedar Rapids IA and his father still lives in the house he grew up in. According to him, his father lost almost every tree in the yard and some were 30-40 yrs old.

He posted this medium article. ---

" As of 10 a.m. Wednesday 90,000 plus households in Linn County were without power. Restoring power across the grid will take weeks. Lines at gas stations outside of town with power were hours long. Chainsaws are sold out. Generators are sold out. Many gas stations sold out of gas. Cell service and LTE is spotty or nonexistent. You can’t call 911. The city has implemented a curfew from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. There are no lights in the city. You can see the milky way from downtown."

Looks like there will be a pretty drastic change in the weather tomorrow evening. We'll be at 90 and humid at peak heating time, and a big front will suddenly move through and temperatures and dew points fall off a cliff. Seems to indicate a good size storm has a good chance of moving through.
Anybody who can elaborate more on this than I? Then Saturday will be 80 and dewpoints in the 50's. Fall is checking in on us again!

After some hope, and a spike in forecast chances, ripped off again. Hoping for rain the next time there's a 0-10% chance because these 60-70-80% are useless.

Haha, thats what I was thinking. The past 3 storms with only a 20% chance of rain, we have gotten almost 3in in Bellevue combined. The past two times there was a 50% or greater chance....nothing.

So much for that cooler weather that was expected. Guessing since that storm never came through, that beautiful high of 80 that was expected is now 86. Not quite the cup of tea I prefer, but at least the dew point is really low.
