This was a dig at Nebraska. I hope they get at least one of the big shot teams. It would be great to dent OSU or PSU's season and keep them from a big dollar bowl game.Omahacritic wrote: Sun Sep 20, 2020 11:57 pmBetter to go down fighting than lie in middle of the road and get run over.GetUrban wrote: Sun Sep 20, 2020 8:37 pm Sometimes you have to be careful of what you wish for. Re: Nebraska Football 2020
Nebraska gets its way, gets the season resumed, but the whining out of Lincoln, and from the fan base continues. It's becoming embarrassing at this point. I always said, pushing for this season could be a "be careful what you wish for" scenario. I don't think this team is going to be very good. I could easily see 2-6 or 3-5 with a 1-7 and 0-8 in the realm of possibility.
At some point, you have to suck it up and just move forward. All of this hand wringing about everyone being out to get Poor Old Nebraska U is just kind of sad and indicative of how far the mighty have fallen.

Using the sample size we’ve seen in recent years, even if the overall team improves this year..based on the schedule, 2 or 3 wins is definitely the likely win total for this Husker team in 2020. I’d be surprised if they pulled off 4 wins..shocked if they got 5..
O-8 or 1-7 while much more likely than 5 wins, would be a complete season disaster for Frost and his staff...

At what point do you consider the drop off in talent of some of the other teams?Omaha Cowboy wrote: Tue Sep 22, 2020 8:15 amTaking off my rose colored Big Red sunglasses-omaha79 wrote: Mon Sep 21, 2020 9:07 am I don't think this team is going to be very good. Not being a homer ... I see drops in talent from last year on 6 of the teams. I’m not certain that NU has improved so much as the others have dropped. And it’s a Corona virus year.
That’s why I stick to a 4 win season. I’d put the Over at 4. Not 2.

I say with Ohio St, Wisconsin and now Penn St, they don’t necessarily drop off in talent, they reload.. A la NU during the Devaney/Osborne era.. I call 3 pretty safe Husker losses right there..Omahacritic wrote: Tue Sep 22, 2020 11:38 amAt what point do you consider the drop off in talent of some of the other teams?Omaha Cowboy wrote: Tue Sep 22, 2020 8:15 amTaking off my rose colored Big Red sunglasses-omaha79 wrote: Mon Sep 21, 2020 9:07 am I don't think this team is going to be very good. This leaves us with Northwestern, Illinois, Iowa, Purdue and Minnesota. Out of these remaining 5 teams, the Huskers have only been able to defeat Illinois consistently. They’ve lost to Iowa 5 straight times.. Then it’s basically a toss up with the remaining 3..
I just don’t believe the Huskers are close to an improvement level yet that they win 4 out of these 5 games. I believe best case is 3 out of 5..
That’s why I’m predicting 2-6 or 3-5 as the record. If they get 4, I’ll be pleasantly surprised. 5, again, I’d be shocked.. Joyfully shocked..
The wild card and you’re right.. which could throw a monkey wrench in all of this.. is Covid-19.. the question is, will it effect the season enough to jostle another win or 2? Or will it throw the season off completely. The pandemic is the great unknown wildcard here...

What will be interesting to watch what happens with Iowa. After all the distraction and locker room / coaching issues with treatment and racial concerns it could have impact on this season that is not anticipated.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Tue Sep 22, 2020 12:02 pmI say with Ohio St, Wisconsin and now Penn St, they don’t necessarily drop off in talent, they reload.. That's why I've called this a "be careful what you wish for" season for the administration and Husker fans that were pushing for football this year, come heck or high water. This team needs something to go right for them. They need a solid start at some point. The Cincinnati game was likely to be a test, but I'd have liked their chances of going 3-0 against that schedule much better than what they are starting with now.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Tue Sep 22, 2020 8:15 amTaking off my rose colored Big Red sunglasses-omaha79 wrote: Mon Sep 21, 2020 9:07 am I don't think this team is going to be very good. For a good 20 years, Nebraska football has been an extremely mentally fragile program. The wheels tend to fall off relatively easily around here given the media and fan angst. They are also coming off of 3 straight losing seasons. Chances are, they are looking at a 4th this year. Because of Covid, there is zero scenario where Scott Frost is fired after this year. But, the narrative isn't going to be good heading into 2021 if Frost starts his time in Lincoln with 3 straight losing seasons himself. Something like a 1-7 could be disastrous, seen as a sign of regression, and could send the program/regime into a further tailspin.
At some point, it begins to affect recruiting. At some point, he feels his seat start to warm up. Another losing season this year, even with the cloud of Covid surrounding it, probably makes 2021 the defining year of his tenure in Lincoln. Huge contract or no, I don't think any football coach at Nebraska can survive a 4th consecutive losing season in Lincoln.
So, maybe kicking the can down the road towards a more typical and manageable season might have been preferable when you're at the level Nebraska has been. By playing this year, you're really going to have thread the needle to make something positive out of this. Another negative is easy, and likely. But, at some point, you either do or you don't. By playing in 2020, Scott Frost is bringing those questions closer to the forefront for himself and his tenure in Lincoln.
And, being so brazen in your demands to play will be used to poke fun at the school if the team starts 0-2. If Ohio St. is up by 3 touchdowns at half, even the announcers will probably be saying, "so, you wanted to play that bad, eh Nebraska. Enjoy!" It would be chum in the water. They better come out strong because something wicked from a media perspective is headed Nebraska's way if they don't.

I think the only true advantage NU has going forward with this season is what I perceive as a strong leg up in offseason preparation. I think they did a tremendous job in keeping their heads down in true anticipation of playing and are ahead of other schools in the league. Now just have to see if that translates to on-field success.

I think it’s telling that the Notre Dame-Wake Forest game was postponed this Saturday after 4 ND players texted positive for Covid-19..

Let's just hope that the rosier side of this comes to fruition. Maybe the other schools weren't quite ready. Maybe Nebraska comes out with a chip on their shoulders. There is a path to positivity here, but the negative just seems like a more likely outcome.

Losing to Iowa 5 straight times is meaningless. That’s just ESPN footer feed. Different coaches. Different schemes. And above all ... most reams lose at least 20% to 40% of their starters. Might as well be looking at the spin history of a roulette wheel.
It is 100% accurate record of the past. Meaningless for predicting the future.

First we were told that the Big 10 started the season back up again because the science said it would be safer now since they have obtained better testing.
Then we were told by Tom Shatel and other local news media that Nebraska got the Big 10 to start up again. https://omaha.com/sports/huskers/footba ... 36276.html
Last night we were told during the debate by Trump that it was him that got the Big 10 to start up again.
I might buy into the idea that Nebraska or the President had small parts in influencing the start up of the Big 10 but neither one of them are pedaling the story that way, They both want full credit. Where I'm going with this is that is sure looks like Nebraska now has a Head Coach and an Athletic Director that resemble false narrative creating politicians. Are we not now in danger of having a coach and AD that are selling us a line of total B.S. in order to keep their high paying positions as long as they can because it is looking like we have saddled ourselves with a coach and AD whose strong suit is conning the fans. This AD and his coach have eroded my confidence in them ever producing a winner out on the field but they are starting to convince me that they are very good at conning the fans and preserving their jobs.

It pretty much was a given that all the sports teams at Nebraska do not have access to the same level and quality of testing that the football team does. It now is being reported that the Nebraska track team has a Covid-19 outbreak. The track coach said they do not get tested daily like the football team does. With just 10 days away until the big game at Ohio State the Husker football team will have to be mighty careful not to have on outbreak. Not sure they would tell us if they did. Pretty much sure they would not say a thing.

So, why would track team make a report but not the football team?
I haven’t run track in a long while, but it seems the closest I ever needed to come into contact with another athlete was passing the baton for relays.
Or maybe the State Leapfrog tourney.
But football players ... I think they get a bit closer than that.

Re: Nebraska Football 2020
Nebraska football coach Scott Frost took $166,667 salary reduction due to pandemic
The reduction represents 3.3% of Frost's annual salary and falls in line with the four-month, 10% reduction all NU athletic department employees faced if they weren't among the more than 50 employees furloughed for those months.
Frost makes $416,666.67 per month. A 10% reduction of that amount over four months equals $166,667. Nebraska Athletic Director Bill Moos announced those reductions in August.

Congratulations, Nebraska — you're already eligible for a bowl game
The NCAA Division I Council on Wednesday waived all requirements for playing a bowl game this season due to the coronavirus pandemic. There’s no minimum amount of wins against Division FBS competition; there’s not even a minimum amount of games. NU could, in theory, finish 1-1, have six games canceled due to COVID-19 issues, and play in a bowl game after the end of its regular season, which is Dec. 19.

Yes, in normal times. They do not run in formation. They naturally space out. Running Outdoors. I haven’t run track in a long while, but it seems the closest I ever needed to come into contact with another athlete was passing the baton for relays.
Or maybe the State Leapfrog tourney.
But football players ... I think they get a bit closer than that.
Practicing in “same areas”. You mean inside a quarter mile oval? A practicing football team might have 20 athletes inside a 10 yard by 10 yard block of space.
Weight Room ... are football teams going so far as to allow the entire team in the weight rooms?
It’s like comparing practices for the golf team with practices for the basketball team.
I agree there should be testing, but daily?

It looks like the points on the Nebraska vs Ohio State game have the Huskers as a 22 1/2 point underdog. Bet the farm on Ohio state as there is just about not a chance in the world that Ohio State does just not beat the lowly Huskers silly! Best case scenario for the Huskers would be they only get beat by 3 or 4 touchdowns. Worse case scenario is the Huskers get creamed 70 to 10.

This year of 2020 has been so crazy and fluid, I’m surprised we even have a college football season. In any case, trying to be an optimist, I’ll come up with my score prediction later next week..but I wouldn’t be surprised with a Ohio St blowout win, or NU playing them tough and only losing by 10-14 points...

How many top 20 teams lost last weekend? It’s why I love a College Football. Anything can happen.
Ohio State the better team? Likely.
But if I thought a blowout was in the bag I’d be at the bookie with 10 C-Notes.
I’m at a 50/50 chance on the game being played.

That's also the reason I'm not a huge fan of college football. Preseason rankings flat out shouldn't exist. Every team should be unraked until at least 4 weeks in, then evaluate the records/scores/opponents and place accordingly. Some team shouldn't get the benefit, or doubt, that they should be better or worse than the previous year based off of nothing that has yet to be decided on the field.Omahacritic wrote: Fri Oct 16, 2020 9:58 pm How many top 20 teams lost last weekend? I wish they wouldn't do rankings until the CFP rankings come out in I think week 8. Its all basically to string along fans and create excitement around otherwise unexciting games. Guess that's why they do it. At least in the pros, wins and losses decide the seedings/rankings/perceptions/so-on-and-so forth.

But I think the chances are better that they’ll play...maybe 75 yes, 25 no. I think with their pent-up energy Nebraska will play hard enough to dodge a blowout, hopefully.

BusGuy, I understand your points. The “voters” never want to lower anybody. The “Number 1 until you lose” mentality is whack.Busguy2010 wrote: Fri Oct 16, 2020 11:19 pmThat's also the reason I'm not a huge fan of college football. Preseason rankings flat out shouldn't exist. I haven't been to a college game in person, but must admit seeing tv timeouts in person is a little weird. But these days recently, a college game has been more like a 4 hour commitment, whereas pro games are not much over 3 hours. Could be the recent popularity of college ball translating into more commercials, or just a tendency for the college game to be sloppier with more clock stoppage. Just an observation I've made.Omahacritic wrote: Sat Oct 17, 2020 11:01 pm BusGuy, I understand your points. The “voters” never want to lower anybody. Point taken. I think it has with stopping the clock on first downs and after every incomplete pass. Throwing the football 50-60 times for each team slows it down.Busguy2010 wrote: Sun Oct 18, 2020 12:18 amI haven't been to a college game in person, but must admit seeing tv timeouts in person is a little weird. But the Pro’s ... they have to keep it to a television schedule. Each team gets 10 timeouts. Even the rules are tweaked to allow more offense.
And never forget the constant joke, ... if your wife asks you how much time is left in the game ... and you tell her 2 minutes ... she knows dinner is served 30 minutes later.

The NFL stops the clock after incomplete passes as well. Teams are also given three timeouts per half, not ten total.Omahacritic wrote: Sun Oct 18, 2020 9:59 amPoint taken. Just sayin', all the past several times I went to watch a pro game at the bar, it started at 7:20 and I was out of there by 10:40 at the latest. The past several times I've been for college ball at the bar, they start usually at 7 and sometimes didn't get out 'til almost 11.Linkin5 wrote: Sun Oct 18, 2020 4:08 pm The NFL stops the clock after incomplete passes as well. As a result of what, I don't know. I can only speculate that it is more, and incomplete passes and longer commercial breaks. OR, that they were Husker games and they have been pretty bad as of late and Husker games specifically have been noticeably longer.

Opening Kick off. Go to a long time-out.
3 unique timeouts per team Per half. That’s 4 time outs.
At 2 minutes remaining in 2nd Quarter ... Time-out. That is 5.
Halftime ... rinse, lather, repeat.
5+5=10
Okay, the kick-off timeouts don’t help much. They are made for television. Still, it is 8.

All good. If the Huskers can put together a good season, maybe the games wont be so long. Although not technically "timeouts" I get what critic is saying. Each team gets six timeouts per game, plus two two minute warnings, and every other TV timeout might even be a longer rest than an actual team-initiated timeout. But it really doesn't matter.Linkin5 wrote: Sun Oct 18, 2020 9:29 pmYeah last time I checked college games were slightly longer than NFL on average. They won't be putting together a good season. All the lawsuits from the players parents and the state attorney general can't rescue this team from the beat downs they got coming. The only thing that can save this team is the Virus. With the virus flaring up maybe the season gets stopped after a few games.Busguy2010 wrote: Mon Oct 19, 2020 12:07 am All good. Nebraska 13 Ohio St 69
P.S extra bonus prediction- The sportscasters will be cracking jokes by the middle of the 3rd quarter about the Huskers being full of a lot of hot wind and not much substance! The Huskers asked to be made into laughing stocks and now were going to get it.
