Ross Jernstrom is one of those guys I irrationally dislike. He's the spitting image of a boss I used to have that I detested, so every time I see Ross Jernstrom it triggers some involuntary hate. lolDennyMarkham wrote: Wed Jul 29, 2020 1:18 pm Ross Jernstrom was supposed to leave WOWT last year but I guess they decided to keep him around a while longer. I now hear his last day, officially, is this Friday and the new Sports Director is starting Monday, August 3rd. His name is Joe Nugent.

He'd have to drive all the way out to Ralston/Millard! Seriously, why do the local outlets even bother with Sports?

So Did Jernstrom retire, leave, or get fired?
Jim Rose is saying he got fired on KFAB and on Facebook.

If he got fired I don't think he would have been able to say his goodbyes, and it's kinda strange Rose would say that as KFAB and WOWT are news partners

Based on what I‘ve seen- perusing her “good bye” post on Facebook today, WOWT decided not to renew her contract after 9 years..
That’s what it appears to me.. Perhaps another forum member can confirm or correct...

Not surprising about salary dumps. They can't bring in near the money they used to. I don't even know half these people and haven't seen a newscast in months. Would guess they are tightly correlated to newspaper circulation.

The demographics indicate older people (still) watch local news, so it only makes sense to keep John around for Channel 6, even if they could probably hire 4 youngins for the price of one, if they ever did decide to let him go. With that said, from John's perspective, why leave if you're making quarter mill annually at 70 years old? Everything's being done for you and all you have to do is read. It's a no brainer.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Tue Aug 11, 2020 7:13 amSo he’ll be 69 on Dec 7th.. That’s good news. I like her. And am glad she found a job staying in the Omaha market. It’s obvious to me she wants to be here.. It’s refreshing to see on air talent buck the trend of “that’s just how this business works” and bolt to a larger market the first chance they get a la Molly Bernard and others. I just rolled my eyes when Molly Bernard bolted earlier this summer and numerous people asked her why she was leaving Omaha..and her pat answer was “that’s just how this business works”. No Molly, that’s not always how it works.. If you truly wanted to be here..
I understand Molly is single with no kids, but I found her repeated answer to be a bit disingenuous...

I'm going to give Molly the bennie of the doubt. I know a TV meteorologist (also a stormchaser) in North Platte that signed a twelve-month contract which is coming up and she has to leave.
What caused me to scratch my head was that Molly seemingly wanted to go to Milwaukee. Place is a $h!th0l3.

I’ll agree with you on Milwaukee. If given a choice, Omaha would be a slam dunk for me..damonhynes wrote: Mon Sep 21, 2020 11:54 am What caused me to scratch my head was that Molly seemingly wanted to go to Milwaukee. Place is a $h!th0l3.
I like Molly. And don’t get me wrong, there is absolutely nothing wrong with her being ambitious.. But I would have appreciated it if she had come clean and gave a more truthful answer- that she works in a career where the bigger the market, the more exposure she gets..and her career goal is to try and succeed in the largest markets available. More exposure equals better career opportunities and money.. Something to that effect..
Of course, she had a nice gig at KETV and seemed to enjoy life here. But as soon as her 2 year contract was up, she bolted. I knew right away the real reason then. I just wish she would have been more transparent and admitted it...

Milwaukee is a more important TV market than Omaha, mainly because it’s larger. Working in Larger TV markets equal bigger paychecks, smart move on Molly’s part. I did enjoy her weather casting during her time here in Omaha and wish her well.

I don’t know that I’d call it “more important” just because it’s a larger television market..Cermak wrote: Tue Sep 22, 2020 8:03 pm Milwaukee is a more important TV market than Omaha, mainly because it’s larger. Yes, Milwaukee is a larger metro and TV market than Omaha.,and for on air talent that has the ambition to move up the market rankings, it should equate to more money and more exposure..I think most all of us know that. But not all on air talent necessarily has the desire to play the move up the market game either. Especially if they’re happy with the job and location they’re currently at..
This is Omaha vs Milwaukee we’re talking about. I’m not sure “important” is a word I’d use .. more “significant” maybe .. I mean, New York, LA, Chicago or any other top 10 television market is not the comparison market to Omaha here.. Had Molly jumped to Dallas from Omaha, then I’d buy “important”.. But that’s me...

Re: Omaha Local News Channels
Milwaukee is a wealthier/more important media market than Omaha hands down. Almost anyone in Omaha currently working as an “on air talent” would jump to a job in Milwaukee in a second if they had the chance. Except for maybe John Knicley and a few others. It’s media market size is 35 compared to Omaha’s 71. It’s just a little smaller than the KC market. The best way for Omaha to get better on air talent would be to combine the Lincoln Omaha TV markets into one, but I don’t see that happening. Again Molly made a great move going to Milwaukee if she is concerned about advancing her career.

Of course Milwaukee is a larger market than Omaha. And for on air talent that is ambitious and wants to move up the market rank, Milwaukee is certainly an option.. But I’ll stop at agreeing with your definitive statement that practically anyone working in Omaha Television would move to Milwaukee if given the chance.. I don’t believe that’s the case at all..
So I’ll just agree to disagree with you. Molly Bernard seems happy with her latest move up the market chain.. Good for her...

Right, we can agree to disagree. I just think that when that Milwaukee, KC or Cincinnati carrot is dangled before the eyes of an Omaha, Des Moines or Wichita on air talent they will most likely go for it, instead of saying I’ll pass. Especially the younger ones . Older more established talent maybe not as much. But even some of them might bolt.

That’s fairCermak wrote: Wed Sep 23, 2020 2:17 pm Right, we can agree to disagree.

It's official: Serese/Jenny in the AM, Maya/Courtney in the evenings. This is good.

Serese AND Molly gone and they kept Nicely? He is worse than any news person I've ever seen.
Sounds like they dogged Serese AND Molly too. Count me gone too. I've tuned out Channel 6 news and most of it's other programming too.

Re: Omaha Local News Channels
Umm.. Molly worked as a meteorologist at KETV Channel 7 and bailed to Milwaukee WI after 2 years in Omaha so she could move up the market food chain.. Serese was basically let go (her contract not renewed) after nearly a decade at WOWT channel 6, but she was just hired on at KMTV channel 3, so good for her and glad to see she’s staying in the Omaha market.. Knicely has been around forever as lead evening anchor at WOWT 6- he’s got a good gig there and I don’t blame him for milking it as long as he can.. although I think the end of his run is pretty close.. I wouldn’t be surprised if he retires within the next couple years..deedubone wrote: Tue Sep 29, 2020 6:32 am Serese AND Molly gone and they kept Nicely? I’m not sure what television market you’re watching.. But you might want to read through a few pages of this thread before commenting..

Re: Omaha Local News Channels
I always used to watched channel 7 and 6 but switched over to 3 a few years ago. I’m tired of Knicley and not a fan of the anchors on 7 so I started watching channel 3. Also, like most people I don’t watch local news as much as I Used to. Channel 3 has a brand new set that looks pretty sharp.
