Nothing wrong with that. This rain is slow soaking and will help to build the soil moisture back after a DRY year. The ag people need it as long as in a few short weeks they can get their crops in. Won't do much anymore for this year's yields.

To put into perspective how far behind we still are, if we wanted to get back to a normal level of moisture before it starts to turn into snow, it would have to rain about .36" every day for the next 30 days.

Could everybody handle that? I think even I would get tired of that.

I know the extend of the drought.
It won't rain 1/3 of an inch for the next 30 days straight so nothing to worry about.

Looks like the NWS is predicting a continuation of warmer than normal and dryer than normal weather over at least the next month.

Normal highs drop quickly from 78 now to 64 a month from now, with normal lows being 54 and 41, respectively. So above average doesn't necessarily mean hot. But the prediction of dryer weather is discouraging.

Next week looking to be an extremely comfortable one. A bit windy, but mostly sunny, and highs in the 60's with lows in the upper 40's.

Finally some nice cool fall air. I didn't mind the heat until recently since I have a pool, but when it was cool and rainy a few weeks ago, I quit treating the water. Who knew that it was going to be back in the 90's for consecutive days.

I'll always remember this date two years ago. I had a great day because it was the first real cool day of the year in 2018, and I went fishing at Whitehawk lake at 192nd & F. It got cool enough where my hands were basically non-functional. Then i went to start my truck and it would not. Had a bad battery connection, and luckily I jimmied it into just the right spot to get enough contact to start. I went from being cold to sweating bullets, as I was a good 14 miles away from home at 10 pm with all my fishing gear. Well, definitely won't be feeling cold this go around, but should get a good taste of that kind of weather later on in the week. Can't wait. I'm sooo over the heat this year.

Oowee! Just looked and Thursday is a high of 60 and a low of 37. Darn near frost criteria right there. Wouldn't be surprised if the garden gets a little nip out of that one. It would be right on time too with the average first frost being between September 28ish through October 4th around these parts. Albeit 7 days out, the conditions at the moment look good for frost last one waiting on is how windy it is. If it is clear, low dew point, and little wind, I wouldn't be surprised with a frost at 37.

Yeah, I really didn't care for it. One more day. If only I spent most my time in my air conditioned house, I wouldn't care what the temp is. But I'm always at work where they don't like to keep it too cool.

The benefits of that one odd week of cool weather and rain lasted longer than I thought it would. But it’s definitely still way too dry! A warmer repeat of that would be great.

This rain is enjoyable. Not half the caliber we need, but fun to listen to.

Turns out last night officially got down to 33. A bit lower than expected, and could have been the difference between some plants being okay and others not. Why I've never trusted a "frost". If its gonna frost, it can freeze

It’s getting really bad again, for sure. Seems like the leaves are really falling fast this year, but the color has been pretty good at least. I think 2019-2020 is kind of a repeat of 2011-2012. A super wet year followed by a super dry one. But more extreme this go-around maybe.

A third of an inch would be a nice get as we come closer to the first freeze and no longer needing to mow..

Usually Omaha’s first freeze is between Oct 15-20th.. But with the warmth we’ve had, basically since June 1st, that first freeze might hold off until the beginning of November...

The temperatures at the end of the 7day forecast (Oct 16) look promising for some colder weather. A freeze would theoretically follow within the 14 day forecast... Or it could go back up, what do I know? First freeze was the 25th (edit, that's wrong, it was the 12th) last year.

Actually on second look, the only outlier from the norm (mid October) I can find in the last 5 or 6 years is 2015, when it barely held off until the 13th of November, finally officially dropping to 32 or below at Eppley. But there always are plenty of days close enough to freezing where various parts of the metro would experience temperatures of 32 or below, whether NWS official or not. Like 10/2 this year, it officially got down to 33. Not technically freezing, but as close as you can get.

Interesting..

As a side note, I was watching some well shot videos on YouTube last night of the Derecho that rolled through eastern Iowa a couple months back (it kind of clipped the Omaha metro, at least the southwest side of west Omaha where I live was spared).. A VERY intense and scary storm...

No way... I was too!

I was half-asleep as that part rolled though that day. It was a total surprise. It sounded just like how it does when we have a strong winter system move in. Winds whipping from every direction, variably, probably up to 50 mph. I have little doubt that if that thing centered up on the Omaha metro the way it did on central Iowa, that that storm would have been one of, if not the most memorable storm events of this century.

After you guys mentioned them, I watched two of the YouTube Videos on the August Iowa-multi-state derecho. I was surprised at the length of duration of the event in Cedar Rapids. 30-45 minutes of hurricane force winds. That was crazy. It seems like it only lasted about 10-15 minutes in northern Douglas county in the early stages. It makes me wonder about how the circulation of the wind forces in the atmosphere can sustain an event like that so long. Maybe the supercell storms were tapping into the jet stream flow to bring those normally higher winds down to ground level.

It’s almost like a gigantic version of one of these blowers was at work in the atmosphere...with rain added in too.

Agreed..

It would have been a most devastating property damage storm.. Hurricane force winds for nearly 45 minutes straight..
We were very fortunate the storm basically spared the majority of the Omaha metro...

It was a nice amount where I am. Wouldn't be surprised if I personally got more than what was reported at my location. Those winds delivered the kill-shot on my greenhouse. Definitely going to replace the skin on that, not an easy or desirable task, but is expected over time. But a positive with the winds is that it removed a lot of leaves from the trees at once which might mean fewer leaves to clean up at crunch time when snow is imminent.

Thank you great thread starter... I always believed the weather threads should be titled as "(insert year) Weather", as both severe weather and winter weather have no definite beginning or ending. But thanks for the heads up that it probably won't snow.
