Actually it is a diagram of current and prospect business in those buildings. The part under the interstate is the second floor, they just represented it there. The Kum&Go got my attention, but a convenience store there makes sense.

I had read somewhere, recently, that along with downtown Denver, Kum & Go would be opening a location in downtown Omaha as well. A convenience store at Capitol District makes sense for sure...

A convenience store there will make bank just from people staying at the Marriott and Hilton who want to buy snacks and such without getting crazy price-gouged, or just getting a beer or slice of pizza for their room; add in folks leaving the CHI or the new venue being built they can print money

So, I guess 3x3 basketball is a thing? I didn't know it was to be a new sport for competition in the Olympics this year. Capitol District is hosting a tournament with local players participating. It's organized by 3Ball USA, a organization that is keen on promoting 3x3 basketball in the USA. There are so many good players coming out of college that the games should be entertaining, especially with a half court setup. The tourney is free to attend. Under other circumstances I would for sure check it out, but I am not sure how they are going to enforce social distancing in the District.

Also, the CEO of 3Ball wants to make Omaha the center of 3x3 basketball in the States. I don't know if it will catch on in the US, but it's popular enough that it's going to be in next year's summer Olympics, so who knows?

To me, this isn't surprising. 3x3 is faster paced and spaces the floor so there is more scoring and attacking the hoop. You also can't hide players on offense/defense so I think the talent pool tends to be better. The BIG3 league has been a decent hit with former professional players showing out. I played in a 3x3 tournament in the Railyard a couple years ago and in a big tournament out here in SLC. Lots of people show up to play and watch, and the Capitol District should benefit. I've played against some of the names on that list, lots of talent and skill will be there and there are some big Nebraska names not on that list!

It sounds like I should not be so skeptical. I checked out their promotional videos and it seems like a fun event. It's reminiscent to streetball in how fast the games move and physicality. Maybe I will drive by to see how the crowds are. This is probably a test run as the league appears to already have teams in place, but they are not playing at this tournament. I am trying to understand how these different professional 3x3 leagues fit together. It seems like 3Ball USA is a FIBA backed professional league, while BIG3 is a private venture not affiliated with FIBA. I started reading up on how this 3Ball USA league fits into the larger FIBA 3x3 tournament structure, but it seems complicated. Is it a qualifying tournament to get into the World Tour, or is the World Tour its own thing? I don't get it, but it should be exciting basketball.

We don't seem to be as excited about the Kum & Go as we would have been. After all these years of just Cubby's and the place up on 16th and Harney, we will finally have a brand Downtown where somebody from out of town, or even just somebody that doesn't go Downtown often can walk in and know exactly what to expect. And presumably even a public restroom to use.

The DGX is nice and larger than I expected. Lot of product for downtown livin' but not much for fresh food.. Milk, bread, eggs, tortillas, frozen hamburger.

I think it’s pretty darn exciting news for downtown. People forget when Patrick’s Grocery closed downtown a few years back, that was a blow..

Sure it’s not HyVee.. But as I stated previously here, it’s a great get for the downtown core and should make a killing..

Another thing to consider in following up your point- if a full service Kum & Go can be a hit downtown, don’t think the full service grocers of the world won’t take notice and actually make a serious commitment to a store downtown..

Kum & Go opening at the Capitol District may be more important than people think...

The bay isn’t that huge. But f they take the second one, it will be about same as DGX. Cubby appear far larger. Kum presence .. meh. It will do alright but probably not a game changer.

DGX is just odd. It’s as though they are still deciding what they want to be. The scarcity of fresh food is a downer. But it seems their selection of sundries is better than Cubby. Their windows are still partially boarded up so they have zero visibility.
I’m hoping they make it through the lack of office workers in the area.

“A Kum & Go has opened in the Capitol District, bringing a convenience store to help fill a void for groceries within a stroll of downtowners.

The walk-up store is in a 1,500-square-foot bay along Capitol Avenue near 12th Street, and specializes in freshly prepared foods and an assortment of beverages and snacks.

Patrons will find beer, wine, energy drinks and snacks such as chips, candy, protein bars and beef jerky. The kitchen prepares fresh sandwiches such as turkey cheddar wraps and also serves premade items such as pizza.

The store has no fuel. It emphasizes its sustainability focus with the use of recycled paper bags, compostable silverware and straws and recyclable cups and lids.

Store hours are from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. (closing an hour later Thursday through Saturday), though kitchen hours are a bit different.“..

Today, visited This place ... if you want a pack of gum, a condom, a fountain drink, pop wine, or a gas station sandwich ... by all means go.

Does not have much of anything else. No grocery. If they legalize marijuana it’s a munchies dream. Not much else.

DGX and Cubby’s have nothing to fear.

I expected exactly what you see when you walk into any Kum & Go. Another place to pee and buy beer/chips/cigarettes/candy/soda pop/lotto tickets. Don't know what people were expecting. At least this is a brand where you can be Downtown (or anywhere), randomly see it, and know what to expect.

Yes, a full service grocery store is still the goal (Hy-Vee would be the best)... This shows you where we're at.

Since every single time I've ever been to Kum & Go, I drove my vehicle there, this one is different because you can't just drive up and park. They must expect a significant amount of foot traffic, which is a good sign for Downtown. If they sustain, then that means there is a considerable amount of everyday foot traffic. I don't think its coincidental that they built at the foot of that building. Lots of people living right above them, which is good.

I missed the memo that stated this Kum & Go was a Cubby’s alternative.. It isn’t and never was meant to be..

What it is, is an option for residents of the Capitol District that wasn’t available before it opened.. To me, that’s a positive.. I don’t understand the negativity. It’s a Kum & Go.. Geez. Better with than without..

That said, a full service grocery store..or at least another Cubby’s or Patrick’s size type grocer would be a great downtown addition..

But-

I won’t criticize a Kum & Go, Bucky’s or any similar addition if they decide to hang a hat downtown.. Why? Again, better with than without...

I see this as sorta a test for downtowns walkability and so called foot traffic score. In that perspective this is huge. It sits in a prime location with a large apartment and 300 room hotel just steps away.

If it can’t make it, it may say something about downtowns walkability and density situation. I was expecting it to just carry the bare basics anyway, Beer, chips, cigarettes, maybe some OJ and donuts. Hope it does well.

BusGuy ... good analysis. I just remember someone else here saying it was a “game changer”.

I’m certain their Real Estate department gave the go ahead, so it must be projected to make a profit. So once Arena events start to roll in again they may get enough customers to turn their product over without spoilage.

There are about 210 apartments above. That is really less than 400 full time residents. The hotel might send them some customers, but they don’t have much more product than a hotel kiosk.

However, if you are looking for a 3rd job, they did hang a “Help Wanted” sign out front.

No one has posted in this thread that the Capitol District Kum & Go is a “game changer”..

It’s a Kum & Go.. Minus the fuel option, most every pedestrian living in the Omaha metropolitan area knows it’s a convenience store.. Is it a full service grocery store? Is it even a Cubby’s? No. And of course not..and again, that is not what it’s intended to be..

What it is (again) is an option for Downtown, specifically Capitol District residents and hotel guests, which was not available before..and let’s be real, without the minimizations, this Kum & Go does offer much more product than a freakin’ hotel kiosk..

And (again) I don’t understand the negativity. If one really thinks this store was supposed to be another Cubby’s and was let down that it isn’t, then said person is among the minority of Omaha residents who never stepped into a Kum & Go before the Capitol District location opened and had an inaccurate notion of what Kum & Go actually is.. Now if this is really true, then I guess I can understand the disappointment to a certain extent..

I think most of us would be excited if/when an actual game changing, full service grocery store is announced for the downtown core..He!l, I’d even be happy to hear of another Cubby’s location opening..

In any case- As I stated previously, Kum & Go serves as a niche option which wasn’t available before in the Capitol District.. And (again) better with than without...

What it is to me is basically a Downtown Foodmart but with a public restroom (presumably, I haven't been to the Kum & Go yet) and without the sketchy feel of "I've never been here before". I haven't been to the Downtown Foodmart on 16th since I was a youngin', so I feel it would take an apprehensive visit or two to get reacclimated with that place, but I could walk right in the Kum & Go whistling in and out of the door. The Downtown Foodmart has the Central Park projects (Edit:realized they aren't housing projects anymore, but they were when I was a kid) around the corner, at least the Kum & Go is far enough away it won't really compete for that customer base, so it should stay pretty peachy.

I’d agree with you pretty much here..

But lets be completely clear as to what this new Capitol District Kum & Go is- minus the gas pump component- it is a full service Kum & Go convenience store which also includes a kitchen where employees prepare fresh sandwiches and pizza.. Only thing differences are the fountain drinks ... which is not big for the residents above, and a burger that sits under a heat lamp a few hours.

Chips, condoms, gum, Hostess Products, fountain drinks and pop wine . Same stuff I get at Holiday Inn Express.

If the residents need some milk, bread, ketchup, or other standard food mart items it’s DGX and Cubbies.

But as I said ... if their real estate says they can make money ... fine for them.

And hey ... I get gasoline once every two months. Excuse me for using Pay at Pump. But I’m a Casey’s guy.

And women like it when I don’t Kum and Go.
