Cute response..
At the end of the day, any reasonable person who has walked into a Kum & Go, Bucky’s or Casey’s etc knows exactly what type of establishments they are- convenience stores, not full service grocery stores or even a Cubby’s or Patrick’s..
The biggest difference, is this convenience store does not include the fueling component..And it does offer more than a simple hotel kiosk..
From the W-H piece when the store opened-
“The walk-up store is in a 1,500-square-foot bay along Capitol Avenue near 12th Street, and specializes in freshly prepared foods and an assortment of beverages and snacks.
Patrons will find beer, wine, energy drinks and snacks such as chips, candy, protein bars and beef jerky. The kitchen prepares fresh sandwiches such as turkey cheddar wraps and also serves premade items such a pizza.
Amanda Frank of the Capitol District calls the "upscale" convenience store a needed go-to place for residents of the district's apartments as well as other neighbors- “For years, downtown Omaha has been clamoring for a quick place to buy healthy, easy food options and to pick up everyday essentials," she said. "The concept and feel of this store combined with the incredible location that comes with being part of the Capitol District makes this a perfect fit."”...
In the end, the dead horse here has been beaten enough.. This Kum & Go is a welcome addition to the Capitol District...

Heh, upscale? Kum & go is at the top with QT and Bucky's, but upscale? That's a reach.

I like the risk they took though. Downtown setting and no gas... Something that as far as I know, QT and Bucky's haven't done. This sets them apart.

I wouldn’t call this Kum & Go upscale, lol.. But they did take the risk..Busguy2010 wrote: Tue Nov 03, 2020 8:58 am I like the risk they took though. Downtown setting and no gas... Something that as far as I know, QT and Bucky's haven't done. This sets them apart.
As I stated in a post here several months back, they are also opening up a similar Kum & Go in downtown Denver..along with the one here in Omaha..
They serve a niche.. And apparently it’s part of Kum & Go’s business model..as opposed to Bucky’s or QT..but don’t be surprised if they’re watching. If this Kum & Go has brisk profitable business, I wouldn’t be surprised if the other chains want to muscle in and get their “me too” piece...

Just utilized the Kum & Go on the way to biking on the bridge. Cool option to have when walking/running/biking around there

If you live close by, having a store like this is awesome. There was nothing for blocks, run out of milk on a Sunday morning and it will be even better!

Just stopped in to check it out myself, pretty cool. Feels like a 7-Eleven or something you'd see in Chicago or downtown Denver. Like a bodega, only nicer and less charming. I'm a fan, I'm just never "walking" in that area so I probably won't use it a whole lot. In the Old Market where I am walking a lot, Cubby's fills the void.

Great comments guys..
It certainly shows this establishment fills a niche that was needed within the Capitol District area.. Like I stated in an earlier post, I wouldn’t be surprised if another convenience store like this pops up- Especially in the North Downtown area...

4 people were shot outside of a Capitol District bar just before 2am when bars were closing early this morning- The W-H story link-
https://omaha.com/news/local/crime-and- ... op-story-1
First of all, this is a tragic happenstance..and I hope all victims make a full, speedy recovery..
This is being discussed on the Omaha Reddit page.. But I’m concerned about several things.. This isn’t the first time we’ve had trouble, shootings and disturbances in the Capitol District. With this shooting, 2 of the victims are in critical condition. I guess I never thought we’d see this level of trouble since the district opened..especially since we’re still in a pandemic and people, generally, are not going out to party as much now as they were a year ago..but geez. I know with any area where people gather to be seen/hangout/party/eat, there is going to be an element of trouble from time to time. But, for example, I have yet to hear of this level of trouble in the Blackstone District. There have been shootings, obviously, over the years in the Old Market and Benson Districts..but the Capitol District seems to be developing into a “trouble spot” for violence within the past year. Someone on the Reddit page described the Capitol District as “a sprawling Parliament Pub”.. My other concern is the violence inhibiting future growth of food/entertainment options. I consider this still a new development and would hate to see multiple situations such as this limit it’s full potential..
Your thoughts?...

Damn shame the beef had to be settled on someone else's property, and said property has to take on the reputation. It's pretty obvious the shooter knows the victim (s). Who knows if the intended target is the dead or injured, but they could have easily settled it in private and not on someone elses property. Kids these days... Where has etiquette gone?

I see the disturbance has now claimed one life. Makes me sick and so needless..
And yes, from the standpoint of the Capitol District, they must take the reputation.. And from a future development standpoint, that is a big concern...

Yeah, I don't really care if this is how some people want to solve their problems... It's going to happen regardless. Just wish it happened in a more private setting, just between the involved parties. Just keep it to yourselves...Omaha Cowboy wrote: Sun Feb 28, 2021 1:49 pm I see the disturbance has now claimed one life. Makes me sick and so needless..

I have yet to visit that area, but as a parent I wouldn't take my family there... perhaps in daylight. But since it was described as a sprawling pub scene my guess is that it's not necessarily geared towards the "family crowd".
I concur, however that given the age of the district this has come up frequently (of course ANY time is too often).

One shooting isn't a pattern. I wasn't a fan of Capitol starting at the idea stage, but there being one shooting in a place doesn't mean its their fault or that it's a trouble spot.

As I indicated in my first post yesterday, this was not the first shooting in the Capitol District. Within this past year, yesterday’s shooting was the 2nd, and there have been multiple disturbance calls as well..PWL73316 wrote: Mon Mar 01, 2021 8:37 am One shooting isn't a pattern. It is indeed garnering a reputation as a trouble spot..and that is very concerning to me, obviously as it relates to safety, but also future restaurant/retail development...

Yes but people in Nebraska are overdramatic and act like one shooting means gangs are always there. There's been multiple shootings on the pedestrian bridge and the old market and they're still the most popular places in Omaha.Greg S wrote: Mon Mar 01, 2021 9:49 amThat's the problem though. The difference is, the Capitol District is a mixed used residential/hospitality/entertainment district.. The Bob is a bridge..and the Old Market is a long established point of destination for nearly 50 years.. The Capitol District isn’t even 3 years old yet. These violent happenstances can be extremely damaging for future development..and it’s an issue that must be addressed and curtailed...PotatoeEatsFish wrote: Mon Mar 01, 2021 9:54 amYes but people in Nebraska are overdramatic and act like one shooting means gangs are always there. If it continues unfortunately it will start having an impact on businesses in the Capital District and the hotels. They've already taken a hit, you wonder how much they can handle.PotatoeEatsFish wrote: Mon Mar 01, 2021 9:54 amYes but people in Nebraska are overdramatic and act like one shooting means gangs are always there. That’s two separate shooting situations and a fight where they had to deploy pepper balls in like an eight month span. That’s uh not great.
Wouldn’t be surprised if there is talk to start revoking liquor licenses if they can’t figure things out. Vaguely reminds me of the bar(s) in the Landmark Center that ended up getting shut down.

Re: Official: Capitol District
As someone who has lived downtown for 15+ years (|expletive| me, 15 already?) there’s always been “that place”. Whether it was the revolving |expletive| show at denim and diamonds / Maria sangria, or spilling out of Stiles, or The Hive/Parliament menagerie, it’s been there. And it’s a thing in every city of any size. I don’t know what you do about it other than move to your basement in Gretna and never come out.
That being said, I’ve never remotely felt unsafe. I was 500 ft from cubby’s the night it’s windows were shot out and didn’t feel unsafe. I stood on the sidewalk in front of my building this summer each night the BLM protests happened and ever felt unsafe, even as crowds were marching by and cops were Lobbing flash bangs. heck, the closest I’ve ever come to actual danger was when I was living in old market lofts and it tried to burn down.
And FWIW, off the top of my head I think in that fifteen year span the number of gunshot deaths in downtown Omaha is still pretty close to the number of gunshot deaths at Von Maur on 12/5/07.

Re: Official: Capitol District
Personal safety issues aside..
What concerns me, is Capitol District is not yet a long time established point of destination like the Old Market..whose had a 45+ year head start..
The Capitol District is not quite 3 years old since it’s completion in the summer/fall of 2018..and is still trying to establish an entertainment/dining/office foothold.. the violence that’s occurred there since last Summer can be a big time stain that inhibits growth and could initiate closures and limitations..
And that’s my biggest concern for Capitol District as it relates to the development of it’s (hopeful) long term, established success..These multiple fits of violence, as it relates to the development, is a bad look..and a reputation the area can completely do without...

Dadgum social media... Without it, next to nobody would know this happened.
But yes, I agree that the block is too young for these instances not to be detrimental to its long-term health.
I also disagree with the notion that Downtown is any more unsafe than a lot of other areas around town. Doesn't help that North Omaha is next door, but that also doesn't help Benson, Dundee, Midtown, et. Its all the same. Unless you live in one of them sleepy towns out west or down south, you deal with something of some sort.

I think it’s because the violence occurred within the Capitol District, which along with Haymarket in Lincoln, is a high profile and newly designated “entertainment district”..which touts the added flare of taking your drink outside the bar area within the district..Busguy2010 wrote: Mon Mar 01, 2021 10:07 pmWell what is the real difference between what happened here and what happens every week (dern near every day) elsewhere... I just hope, for the future well being of this development, the violence can be curtailed and it’s growing reputation for it nipped in the Bud..
The Capitol District is a nice addition to entertainment and residential options for the downtown core..with its age less than 3 years old, I’d like to see it have a chance to develop to its fullest potential...

The Capitol district needs to go at least 2 years with no more major violence . If anything else happens like more shootings in the near and not so near future I believe it could become damaged goods and people will start going somewhere else. Some people even now may start avoiding the area at least for the next few weeks . Maybe it has to many bars.

I would agree with your 2 year time frame..
The biggest thing is to go for a sustainable period of time with no violence..then any negative reputation garnered by the District will fade away.. And then this development can have a chance to maximize to its fullest potential...

What are we even talking about here... like, let's come out and say it. Is the fear that older white people from West O won't want to go to Capitol because they hear there are minority gangs there? Is that even the crowd that Capitol is trying to attract? People who actually go to the District already know what it's like and what it offers. This is a bunch of hand-wringing over nothing with a lot of subtext, IMO.

The point is it doesn't matter what part of town you are from, you should be able to go and enjoy a night at the capitol district without fear of being shot.

Heck, I've never even been down there before and the last group of people I would think is hanging there are gang-bangers and drug dealers. I imagine that's NOT the crowd you'd think would visit that area.
The facts show people are being shot and/or killed due to violence that shouldn't exist. If WalMart on 168th & Maple saw 2-3 murders at night and it wasn't being addressed, I wouldn't want to go there, either.
Who cares who's doing it. It needs to stop.

Re: Official: Capitol District
Ha speaking of Walmart, gun violence is precisely the reason why I quit going to the Irvington Walmart. Same thing applies at the Capitol District, or anywhere in town... If it has a propensity to attract bad people that will do bad things, it's going to gain a reputation and people are going to stay away. Has nothing to do with the color of the perpetrator's skin, or even urban vs suburban lifestyle. Shootings and other disorderly behavior are not good and shouldn't be dismissed under any circumstances.djc311 wrote: Tue Mar 02, 2021 12:50 pm The facts show people are being shot and/or killed due to violence that shouldn't exist. Growing up and until just a few years ago, it was my go to location. But things really went downhill there in the last few years. I believe it is also the oldest location in Omaha. And has quite the reputation these days. I prefer the one on Ames anymore. But getting really off topic now so I will shut my trap.Erik wrote: Tue Mar 02, 2021 6:28 pm I go to the Irvington Walmart a bunch, i never feared for my safety.

I don't want to argue just to argue but I truly think people are making a mountain out of a mole hill. If the allegation is that an unsavory element is basically taking over the square that's one thing. If it's just a coincidence that one shooting happened somewhat nearby another several months apart, it doesn't mean anything. I don't think anybody outside this forum is even connecting them together.
