Re: Nebraska Football 2020
Whoever wrote that article put them there because of their b!tching. They are not the second worst team in the country, but they might be one of the more loathed teams in the country. Hard to imagine a bad team being loathed, but I guess their against the grain actions gets them that. They are un-liked trailblazers, trying to bend the rule of the Big10 for their benefit.

That is about the most clickbait happy, idiotic logic for ranking ANY of these teams in the coveted Bottom 25.GrandpaaSmucker wrote: Wed Nov 04, 2020 1:13 pm Huskers are ranked as the 2nd worst teamI mean they do suck bad and they are shameless loud mouths but 2nd to last might be over doing it.

I hate trying to predict games in the Covid era but I think it will be the usual Nebraska NW game, and go down to the wire.Cermak wrote: Thu Nov 05, 2020 12:41 pm Even though NU usually plays well in Evanston. The Wildcats are much improved this year. NW 34 NU 17.
I've been really impressed with their QB transfer from Indiana, Ramsey.

Re: Nebraska Football 2020
I think you got it pretty close! Even though we were promised a couple of years ago that Nebraska was going to get stronger it was nothing more then crock and bull. Northwestern's offensive line is strong and their run game is way too well executed for Nebraska's weak and unorganized defense. Nebraska's offense is a mess. Last week we saw our qb do a "fumble for 6." I think it would not be a surprise if our QB comes back this week and throws a "pick 6."Cermak wrote: Thu Nov 05, 2020 12:41 pm Even though NU usually plays well in Evanston. Re: Nebraska Football 2020
They creamed Maryland. Everybody creams Maryland... And they won a 1-point game against Iowa. I don't think there's much to fear here. The Huskers are 5-4 against Northwestern since joining the Big10, with most of those being decided by a field goal or less, and twice in OT. Based on history, I have no reason to believe this year will be any different. I will go 28-24 Huskers.

Wow-
Typical Nebraska-Northwestern game.. I predicted 21-20 Huskers.. These games always seem to go down to the wire..
This was a frustrating loss because it’s a game the Huskers could have (and probably should have) won. The two 2nd half interceptions absolutely killed them..

I hate to throw Martinez under the bus, but I think if McCaffrey had started, they might have won the game. I think McCaffrey will start next week.

This game? I'll just say I hope you understand what I meant at the end of last year. I don't want this to come off like rubbing it in, I am not trying to do that here...but the Nebraska football program is ...we'll say in hibernation.. unless they can catch lightning in a bottle with a Devaney type to wake up the program. This is, again, the equivalent to a John Blake (John Blake's records look familiar? 3-8, 4-8, 5-6? Yes yes, I know that John wasn't a HC until the Sooners so it's not a 100% comparison, but that makes Frost's failures even more inexcusable) at Oklahoma but the Sooner admin had enough foresight to dump him after 3 years instead of doubling down with an infinity long contract like Nebraska. The talent looks like it could be there right now, it's just bone headed play calling, bad personnel decisions and some really bad mental prep that makes me shake my head.
Nebraska was pretty good from the early 1900s to about the early 1940s if I recall correctly. Then two decades or so of utter garbage until they found Devaney. You're nearing 1 decade of "eh" under Solich, Callahan and Pelini, and now almost full decade of utter and complete garbage and incompetence under Frost and Reily. The odds might be long on finding another Devaney, but it's happened before.
But, who knows. The season could turn around...although with Indiana playing out of their minds and Penn State having enough talent to overcome a lot.. I just don't see it right now unless something drastically changes.

I recall at one point during the game, Northwestern faced a 4th & 2 on their own 42 or something like that, and I literally uttered the phrase "Why wouldn't you go for it? You're playing the Huskers!" And they subsequently went for it, and easily converted it.

It’s been so long since we talked college football, I actually miss reading your John Blake comparison, lol..
On balance, I agree with what you’re saying.. Although if we throw out 2020 as a pandemic anomaly season, going into 2021, Frost has only 2 seasons under his belt and I still believe he needs another season or 2 in order to see if there is progress (or not)..
The Nebraska Cornhusker football team lost its way somewhere between the Bill Callahan hire and the end of Mike Reilly.. a 15 year gap of lost/mistaken identity, poor coaching and for the most part, less than stellar recruiting..
While I’m still hanging in with Frost, his teams still make the same boneheaded, mind-numbing mistakes..at the most critical times. This game is a perfect example of that- a game the Huskers clearly could have and probably should have won.. But 2 interceptions- one in the end zone and the other in the red zone- by both of your starting QB’s.. unreal. I do think the NU talent level has improved some. But I think most fans would like to see that transition to progress and wins on the field.. And now, do we have a QB controversy brewing?..
I dunno. I’m on record here saying that with this years schedule, 2 to maybe 3 wins were possible. 4 would be a shocker to me now..
My only hope is to see incremental game to game improvements..and hope a couple of wins can be squeezed out in the process...

Re: Nebraska Football 2020
This season filled with real opponents and no cupcakes has always been about if the Huskers can even win one game. Forget about winning 3 or 4 games. Good news as it looks like that cup cake team Nebraska was looking for might be coming to Lincoln next week. Penn State is losing to Maryland 28 to 7 and they have not won a game yet this year. Nebraska will more then likely be made the favorite by oddsmakers. Could that elusive one win of the season be next week?
Nebraska did good to hang with Northwestern like that. The offense is a mess same as it ever was and yes Frost hurt the team badly by not starting McCaffrey!

Re: Nebraska Football 2020
That's the thing though, you can't just throw this season out really. Teams are playing, teams are competing, etc. Is it weird? Yeah, certainly...but a game is a game. Frankly, from what I heard in the past from these players...not playing in front of a crowd should have been a boon. What you see here, and have seen throughout this 9-17 record is poor decision making (play calls), poor preparation, and just a lack of identity as you said. These games (this game, example) should be a rarity, but instead they have become a norm. If anything they've regressed from the 4-2 ending of the year they had 2 seasons ago. Then again, Maryland is beating Penn State at half time big time, and Indiana is ranked and rolling so maybe there is some credence to the 2020 oddity.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Sat Nov 07, 2020 3:42 pmWelcome back!..MadMartin8 wrote: Sat Nov 07, 2020 2:44 pmI didn't want to comment after the Ohio State loss since that was, well, Ohio State and not much could be ascertained from that game.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Sat Nov 07, 2020 2:14 pm Wow-

Truthfully, the recruiting really hasn't been THAT bad for Nebraska in recent years, and for long enough to build this team (as you eluded to). Is it Ohio State, Penn State, or Michigan good? No...and frankly unless you get some real snake oil salesman (Callahan), it won't be until you start winning again... but it's certainly good enough to compete with the Northwesterns, Iowas, Minnesotas of the College Football world with a puncher's chance against Ohio State's and etc., right now.
I've said this time and time again, Frost has got to get a grip on himself, figure out the shortcomings in his game plans, and then decide on an identity that fits his talent vs what he faces in the Big 10. Maybe he knows, but he needs to fix it (it's what Pelini has yet to do, and what Reily was too delirious/senile to do). Can he turn this around? It's possible still, but like I said all last year, until he figures himself out, it won't, and each year that passes will make recruiting that much more difficult and the window closes more. Or maybe, heck, it's just bad luck? If it is, I want to know what voodoo doll was employed against this program so I can borrow it for other things.
As for a QB controversy, frankly at this point you need to start Luke and just be done with it. Adrian went off the deep-end for reasons unknown (maybe someone has an idea, I don't) and won't be a factor at QB. Move him to WR or RB and just let him do his thing without having the added weight of QB decision making.
This just sucks. I'm not a Nebraska fan, as has been well enough documented here, but I know enough Nebraska fans that I like that this just sucks. 2020 is hard enough on everyone without this team pulling this garbage too. I know it's silly, but it would have been nice to have them have at least something to cheer about. Bleh.
Anyways, those are my thoughts. Back to the deep dark recesses of the internet :p

I think Frost looks just as in over his head as Riley, Pelini, and Callahan. Maybe his players haven't quit, yet, like Riley's. But he looks just as lost on the sideline and after games.
No way he gets canned this year. But I'll never understand giving him that early extension.

NU has maybe the easiest part of its schedule the next two weeks. Penn State looks to have some problems on defense and Illinois I would like to think of as maybe the most winnable game on the schedule. Just some thoughts.

Penn State is a 3 1/2 point favorite over Nebraska. Seems the oddsmakers think a Penn State team that has not won yet this year is still better then a Nebraska team playing at home that looks to be one of the worst teams in college football. I think Nebraska has a chance but I would not lay any money on it

What a game McCaffery had against the Chiefs today. Scott Frost needs to pull his head out and get McCaffrey out there the whole game right now!

You can't get rid of Frost after this season, but I see a 1-2 win season at absolute most. A 2-5 record likely has Frost firmly on the hot seat next year. No way any Nebraska coach can start with 4 straight losing seasons, should it happen again next year, and still survive. Even if the administration has his back, you reach a point where you can't even recruit to it at some point.

If a football program needed to win a game, this Saturday against Penn St is the game NU needs to win. If that happens, it’s possible to have a 2-3 win season..if not, the Huskers are likely staring down the barrel of a 1 win season...

This upcoming game, to me, is a must win against a legacy college football program. The Huskers win this one, they can probably salvage a 2 to 3 win season. They lose this one, they better hope they can defeat Illinois.. Because you’re staring down the barrel of a 0 to 1 win season..nebugeater wrote: Mon Nov 09, 2020 9:15 amThe game they needed to win was last Saturday.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Mon Nov 09, 2020 9:10 am If a football program needed to win a game, this Saturday against Penn St is the game NU needs to win. That’s why I say this week, against an 0-3 Penn St team, is a needed must win for this program..
The Huskers blew it against Northwestern. They can’t afford to blow it, at home, against Penn St...

That point has been reached right now. It was tough enough to recruit already with the past 2 massively failed seasons. Without a shadow of a doubt there will be well deserved repercussions from all the bad mouthing of the Big 10 that Nebraska has done. They should of kept their damn mouths shutomaha79 wrote: Mon Nov 09, 2020 8:27 am Even if the administration has his back, you reach a point where you can't even recruit to it at some point.

No way they do a 3 and out, but I'd say that if NU goes 1-6 or 2-5 this year, next season is 4th and 12 for the Frost Regime. They will need a 7-8 win season next year for him to simply keep his job, IMO.Greg S wrote: Mon Nov 09, 2020 1:38 pm He's fine as far as job security. NU is not doing and 3 and out here.

In terms of former NU players taking the reigns as head coach at their alma mater, I think everyone would have guessed he'd have been closer to a Frank Solich. Maybe quite that stellar of a win loss record, but certainly Franks equal, if not better in terms of game planning and offensive creativity. That's not even that high of a bar. 3 years in, he's tracking closer to a Bernie Masterson scenario/disaster. Hard to fire a legacy...but, at some point, you either do or you don't. almost 3 years in, Scott Frost hasn't done much.

I have said in all sports that the current year is a real hard one to count against a coach. So many variables and in no way shape or form is it a normal year.omaha79 wrote: Mon Nov 09, 2020 3:47 pmNo way they do a 3 and out, but I'd say that if NU goes 1-6 or 2-5 this year, next season is 4th and 12 for the Frost Regime. I think that means next year is third down and 2022 would be fourth, if we're scrapping this season. I think we have to give the Huskers a win for even playing, regardless if it is blowing up in their face.

As a fan, that’s pretty much where I’m at for this season..Busguy2010 wrote: Mon Nov 09, 2020 6:40 pm I think that means next year is third down and 2022 would be fourth, if we're scrapping this season. However-
I am also very much aware of the Huskers melting down once again and losing a game they should have won this last Saturday. I rewatched the game, as painful as it was.. AND it became even more clear to me, the Cornhuskers are a more talented squad than Northwestern.. But metal errors, stupid mistakes and some coaching decisions that were less than stellar, cost NU this victory..
I’m seeing the cracks in the wall, big time.. and as much as I’ve supported Frost, I’m to the point that next season needs to yield, at a MINIMUM, bowl eligibility.. Actually- 7 wins.. because if the Huskers play a full 12 game season in 2021 and finish 4-8 or 5-7 again, that’s just not good enough moving into 2022. We need at least 7-5 in 2021. I’m calling 2020 as a 2-5 anomaly season.. So 2021 is definitely a prove it year for the Frost regime...

Husker press conference: Scott Frost says starting QB job up for grabs
Maybe Martinez should look at what is best for him and the team. If he has any thoughts of being in the pros it won’t be as a QB ....but maybe as a WR, RB or even a DB.

The bottom line this year is just be happy they played even if it’s 0-8. And that’s exactly the way they looked Saturday. The offense looks sick.

All I ask is- don’t be a stranger. The Huskers still have 5 games left in this season and who knows, perhaps they shock the world and win a couple down the stretch they weren’t supposed to, lol..
And we’ll have (I hope) an entire Creighton Bluejays basketball season coming up and they’re preseason ranked at #11 in the country
Ciao..LiO...Peace
Go Cowboys!

Frost IS NOT going to say on Monday that he is making a QB chance even if he is for sure he is. Why tell the Sat opponent.Uffda wrote: Mon Nov 09, 2020 8:46 pm Husker press conference: Scott Frost says starting QB job up for grabs

Participation trophy. What time do we meet at 72nd and Dodge to celebrate?Busguy2010 wrote: Mon Nov 09, 2020 6:40 pm I think that means next year is third down and 2022 would be fourth, if we're scrapping this season. I think we have to give the Huskers a win for even playing, regardless if it is blowing up in their face.

Yeah I think 2021 and 2022 (providing 2021 is a more normal year) are big years for Frost.
I am glad sports are back but what we are seeing in all of them is anything but normal. It's great if your team wins, but let's be honest, it's not as good as in a normal year.

Well that is about the only way they get 1 win this yearBusguy2010 wrote: Mon Nov 09, 2020 6:40 pm I think that means next year is third down and 2022 would be fourth, if we're scrapping this season. Re: Nebraska Football 2020
What league could they even win in at this point? It wouldn't be the Big XII, that's for sure. They'd get their heads handed to them in that league as well. NU in the SEC would be a snuff film.GrandpaaSmucker wrote: Tue Nov 10, 2020 9:39 amWell that is about the only way they get 1 win this yearBusguy2010 wrote: Mon Nov 09, 2020 6:40 pm I think that means next year is third down and 2022 would be fourth, if we're scrapping this season. I think in 2021 and 2022 we might see a continued push by Frost and Moos to get the Huskers out of the Big 10 and into a league that is not so competitive. Frost and Moos don't have a clue on how to win in the Big 10 and the only solution they will have to save their million dollar jobs is to cut and run to an inferior conference.

So, are you suggesting they'd try to move to the Mountain West, American, or MAC? Geographically, those are the only other leagues that Nebraska would even fit into. I can't see them in the Pac 12 or ACC.
The administration at Dear Old Nebraska U may be dumb, but even they aren't dumb enough to forgo a Power 5 payday and drop to mid major status just to try to rack up some wins to save Moos and Frosts jobs. If anyone on that campus would even suggest it, they should be fired immediately.
Really, I think the only viable choices for NU are the Big Ten or Big XII. Neither will pave a path for immediate wins for this program. Anything else is suicide.

Nebraska is not going anywhere. Let's put that to rest. Too much money in the Big 10 plus the Big Ten Academic Alliance.

Re: Nebraska Football 2020
Lets get to the core of the issue. Moos and Frost don't really care about what is best for Nebraska. All they care about is preserving their million dollar a year salaries. These 2 both know they can not merely suggest that Nebraska step down to a mid major conference but that does not mean they can not continue to stoke the fire and fan the flames between Nebraska and the Big 10 and get it to the point where we get thrown out or have to leave.omaha79 wrote: Tue Nov 10, 2020 2:49 pmWhat league could they even win in at this point?
