I see the Ohio St vs Maryland game is now postponed due to a surge in Covid-19 cases within the Terrapins’ locker room..

Money aside, remind me once again why we’re playing college football in 2020

..

Hence my reasoning why this season is a “set aside anomaly” year for Frost’s future tenure as Husker head coach...

As the virus spreads faster then ever its going to get more and more sketchy for them to hold this make believe College Football Season. The question is how bad does it have to get for them to call the rest of the year off?

As careful as I've been and non-existent my social life has been due to this, I always thought sports, at least at the professional level could easily be maneuvered through this pandemic. College football has had a rougher go of it, but professional sports have been largely careful and correct about it. Just comes down to how much the players really care about contracting it or not, and younger kids generally have that invincibility complex and are less likely to make changes in order to stay not-sick. Actually that philosophy applies to every single person. You wanna be loose, that raises your odds of getting sick.

I stated several months back during the summer in this thread, that a college football season should simply gear up for 2021 and not play in 2020..as we really didn’t know what to expect as it relates to the pandemic in the fall..but our worst fears are being realized..

I would not be surprised if within one month, the current 2020 college football season is postponed.. Which if that happens, will not be a popular decision for some...

Impossible to know but I if I was betting I would bet on the season going forward. This is on the promise of the vaccine in large quantities in March.

The vaccines are not going to be around in large quantities until July or August if we are lucky. That is if you are getting your information from the experts. if you are getting your information from the crazy politicians and the loons then the vaccines were around in mass quantities last month! Bottom line is barring some kind of miracle the odds are already high that the 2021 football season is going to be affected by the virus big time.

I think we would be in the same boat had football not been played. The college and professional players in all sports majorly aren't getting sick from playing and practicing, as was stated above by someone else, because there are very stringent protocols in place in every facility. Those same protocols aren't in place, at say, a house party or at the library or at some store, bar, or restaurant. I've always maintained that sports at that level, where they're being tested all the time and quarantining if sick, are some of the safest settings to be in. BUT I've always said that fans shouldn't be allowed, because they are not being held to those standards. It was very discouraging to see the Notre Dame crowd rush the field after their win. It is exact situations like that that the experts are telling us NOT to do, and yet people are doing it, among other risky behaviors. People just don't care and I don't understand it.

IF an effective vaccine is available to the masses by April or even the beginning of summer, I’d feel better about predicting a full, 12 game 2021 Husker football season..

I'm going to go with the crowd as it seems all the experts are picking Penn State to cover ........ Penn State 27 Nebraska 13

Bonus prediction- Martinez will start at quarterback. I'm pretty sure he has a sweetheart deal with Frost guaranteeing him to start every game. I also don't think Frost with his big ego likes us telling him who to start which also insures that Martinez will start. All that being said Martinez will get pulled again at some point if Nebraska is losing.

I honestly believe, although Penn St is 0-3, the NU football program..from a big picture perspective..needs this game more than PSU..

So given that, I’m picking the Huskers here-

I want to see the Huskers win, but the stats so far this year don't support that hope. I think Penn State will win narrowly in ugly fashion 24-21... Unless maybe McCaffrey starts. I think it would be a mistake to allow Martinez to struggle more than his first two series. If he starts and doesn't produce in the first couple drives, pull him.

I think Luke McCaffrey should start and finish this game.. He’s earned it imo..

And that gives the Huskers the best chance to win...

I think so too.

Martinez has shown more than enough to lose the job between how he played last year and how he's done so far this year... As well as McCaffrey showing flashes of promise in relief of Martinez.

Don't get me wrong, I'd take freshman Martinez over anybody else, but he just isn't that same guy anymore.

The Huskers just can't afford to come out flat to start the game, no matter who the opponent is. I'd much prefer to see McCaffrey start and get replaced if he plays poorly than the other way around.

2 goal line stands, Huskers win 30-23.. I predicted 27-24 NU..so the game ended up about the way I was hoping it would..

HUGE win for Frost and the NU football program..against a Blue blood college football program in Penn St..And I could care less if PSU is 0-4..

The defense bent in the 2nd half but didn’t break..

Good that they won but Penn State was the better team in the second half. Total yards PSU - 501 NU - 298

I think mccaffery had 132 yds passing at end of first half and ended up with 152 —- I just felt frost’s play calling left something left to be desired in 2nd half

I'm glad they won, but it was wayyy too close for the start they had. Definitely not a feel good win, but glad Frost started McCaffrey, or this might have gone the other way. The 'Skers have had a tendency to allow fairly good leads in the second half dissolve under Frost.

A win is a win is a win. Wins don't have to be pretty unless you have a fantasy football stake in it.

That is, it is a win until the Big 10 "Competition Committee" institutes a new rule that you can't play on November 14th west of the Mississippi when your program begins with the letter "N" and ends with "a" and makes Nebraska vacate the win.

Agreed.. Or a point spread betting stake, lol..

In any case, this is a huge win for the current state of the NU football program. I could care less how they looked, offensively, in the second half. As long as a win is secured. The defense bent for sure..

But the defense also sealed the win with 2 goal line stands..

This is a win the NU can build on..against a fellow blue blood college football program. And like I said earlier, I could care less if PSU is now 0-4.. The Huskers needed this win for its program’s sake.. We’ll see where it takes NU, but it’s good to get that 1st win monkey of their back and gain some confidence moving forward...

Huskers offense in the 2nd half has looked terrible in all three games this season. But a win is a win, McCaffrey doesn’t throw the prettiest pass but I think his football IQ is higher than Martinez. The defense won the game today with the two turnovers which resulted in 10 points. Nest week is another good chance for a win against Illinois.

Going forward, I expect this to be a 2-win team. If the 'Skers beat Illinois, they'll will be what I thought they'd be. Then they have the stretch of teams the 'Skers used to beat up on, but haven't in the last handful of years.

Iowa used to be a check box
Purdue used to be a checked box
Minnesota used to be a checked box

If they can win out against those teams, then I'll be impressed. That would make 'em 5-2.

WOW, talk about dodging a bullet, Huskers. Wisconsin looks tough, despite missing the time they did. I laughed out loud at some of the comments on a Husker related forum that suggested "Wisconsin chickened out" or "Nebraska missed a chance to prove something against Wisconsin". Oh brother. I love the Huskers, but some of the people in this state have too much blind pride.

Can't believe Frost finally switched quarterbacks. What a world of difference a quarterback makes. With Martinez gone the chances of Nebraska winning a couple more games instantly becomes possible.

I wonder what will happen to Martinez ? Could he play receiver or Running back or will he be content as a backup or decide to transfer. The way McCaffrey plays he could go down with an injury at anytime, he seems to play more aggressively than Martinez. Martinez often looked tentative, which ultimately cost him his job.

AS the backup QB that could be the start on an injury I do not see him moving to another position. There could be a few gadget plays to get him not the field.
As for Luke getting not he filed in Other positions against OSU, I look at that as part of the evaluation in-game experience. He did not get that type of play against NW and only came in late the game as QB. ( Should have been at half time)

As for transferring who knows, lets see how this mess of a season plays out but right now as a team player that he is I would say it is a 50/50 call

I think Frost, as much as he genuinely likes Martinez, needs to ride the Luke train the rest of the season. As far as Adrian goes, the coaching staff might develop some plays to get him onto the field, but I don’t see a position change. I think he’s done as the starting QB for the Huskers unless McCaffrey gets injured..

The Huskers play at Illinois this Saturday. It’s a winnable game. But it will likely be another close one. The Illini had a come from behind victory over Rutgers yesterday..and they have a QB that will create problems for the NU defense with his quickness and feet..

It should be a good game...

Right, Martinez could see some playing time if McCaffrey were to get injured. The whole Martinez situation is just baffling to me. He looked awesome as a Freshman but was never able to get back to that form last year or this year, if anything his passing seemed to be getting worse and he looks slower with no burst of speed. Really a head scratcher on what the heck happened. I guess that’s just part of sports and one of the things that makes it interesting. It definitely affected the team as they have struggled offensively since the beginning of last season when his decline started.

Nebraska is a 14 1/2 point favorite over Illinois on Saturday. The Huskers winning by 2 touchdowns is nonsense and it most likely will be a pretty close game between two teams that have only won 1 game so far this season.

NU a 14 1/2 point favorite over the Illini? Lol..no way, if I was a gambling man, would I take the Huskers to cover the spread in this game.. I think it’ll be the usual close, hard fought game. It might even come down to the final possession..

We’ll see. But I’d be taking the Illini with that point spread...
