Nice article from Forbes that names Nebraska as the #1 state that people are moving to for business.

Nice find! I thought it was unusual that among the big businesses from Omaha, they named InfoUSA, and not one of the other big names from here like Kiewit or Werner. Before reading that summary, I had no knowledge about InfoUSA. I am also surprised that while the usual big names are mentioned in these types of summaries or lists, I don't think I have ever seen it noted that Omaha has a couple of the largest architectural firms in the US or the large niche recruiting companies like C&A, Medical Solutions, or Fusion.

I didn't know that about recruiting companies in Omaha, that's pretty cool. I have seen that DLR Group, HDR, and Leo A Daily are among the 30 largest architecture firms in the nation, I believe at one point they were all in the top 10. Omaha is quite underrated in the minds of most people so I'm glad when articles like this come out.

True. People still don't give much credence to our City, even though it has ranked highly in many 'best of' lists this last decade. Hopefully, in the near future, these summaries will include things like booming downtown/riverfront development along with the usual mentions of low unemployment rate, home of Berkshire, etc.

Hospitals Know What’s Coming

Perhaps no hospital in the United States was better prepared for a pandemic than the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

After the SARS outbreak of 2003, its staff began specifically preparing for emerging infections. The center has the nation’s only federal quarantine facility and its largest biocontainment unit, which cared for airlifted Ebola patients in 2014. The people on staff had detailed pandemic plans. They ran drills. Ron Klain, who was President Barack Obama’s “Ebola czar” and will be Joe Biden’s chief of staff in the White House, once told me that UNMC is “arguably the best in the country” at handling dangerous and unusual diseases. There’s a reason many of the Americans who were airlifted from the Diamond Princess cruise ship in February were sent to UNMC.

In the past two weeks, the hospital had to convert an entire building into a COVID-19 tower, from the top down. It now has 10 COVID-19 units, each taking up an entire hospital floor. Three of the units provide intensive care to the very sickest people, several of whom die every day. One unit solely provides “comfort care” to COVID-19 patients who are certain to die. “We’ve never had to do anything like this,” Angela Hewlett, the infectious-disease specialist who directs the hospital’s COVID-19 team, told me. “We are on an absolutely catastrophic path.”

While the overall tone of the article is gloomy, and justifiably so, UNMC is being recognized as one of the best hospitals when it comes to infectious diseases.

It’s pretty incredible how robust Omaha’s housing market is- #2 in the country ranked just after Seattle..

What you’re seeing in Gretna substantiates that. In my neck of the woods in west Omaha, houses are pretty much snatched up within a week. 2 weeks at the latest...

Yep, goods inflating at severe rates while wages are extremely stagnant and have been since the 80s. This country is just escalating the level of a f#cked state it is in.

Yep, goods inflating at severe rates while wages are extremely stagnant and have been since the 80s. This country is just escalating the level of a f#cked state it is in.

I've noticed that the price of a normal little house is way inflated. If someone were to renovate a kinda crappy 80,000 house, it would turn out like $130,000 even though it's in the hood. Gotta think the cost of all building materials, not just wood, would be a big factor in that.

The cost of wood specifically went up at the beginning of the pandemic because of the huge rise in demand, presumably because of people staying home and working on their house. Or from the increased demand for housing.
Like a year ago a 2x4 was $1.60, now it is more like $7.60. Plywood and treated wood have been the same way. And stores were wiped clean of all types of wood this year, and that was an anomaly that I can only attribute to the pandemic.

Not really. I think they made them in slight variations of that green theme, but if you wanted one without substantial use of green, you’re out of luck.

But like I said, they made 15 for the whole world. So if this variation of paint job isn’t to your liking, it may be difficult to get your hands on a different one.

“Immersive” now describes anything big and crowded with lots of stuff. “Immersive” in 2021 includes video projections, audio soundtracks and other various technological advances which often seem to serve no other purpose than to qualify the exhibition as “immersive” for promotional materials.

“Immersive” washes over visitors with light and sound and scale and spectacle, but does it reach them inside? Does the feast for the eyes also serve as feast for the soul? The mind?

Does the experience linger after the virtual reality glasses have been set down and guests return home?

Wendy Red Star’s The Indian Congress now on view at the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, Nebraska will.
