If I was a betting man (which I’m not), I’d take Illinois to cover that 14 1/2 point spread without much hesitation.. Maybe you were referring to making that same bet in your last post...

It's a tough call. Illinois has dealt with some covid issues but pushed through and played. Not sure how much it impacted some of their games?
Obviously the Minnesota loss looks bad. The one to Purdue not so much.

Re: Nebraska Football 2020
Nebraska has been a 15 1/2 point favorite at times this week. It is amazing how one win can make folks forget just how bad the Huskers are. The biggest difference in quarterbacks last week was that Luke was taking off and running the ball much more and much quicker then Martinez does. Luke's run game looked good but his passing was sketchy at best. Illinois will see the same thing I saw and try to shut down the qb runs and make him pass. This could lead to a few interceptions. If Nebraska wins this game it will be a squeaker and not by 2 touchdowns.

I’ve said since last week, this game was a winnable one for NU, but I have no scenario that has the Huskers winning and covering the double digit point spread..
I think NU beats the Illini, but it’s going to be a close shave-
NU- 33
Illinois- 28...

Re: Nebraska Football 2020
Even Nebraska was able to build a 21 point lead against Penn State. Of course, they let them back in as the Huskers always seem to do when they lead... And I think that's the way this next game will go, with the huskers covering the spread at some point during the game, but letting Illinois back into the game late. But ultimately I think the Huskers will win by 7-10 points. I'm going to go with 35-27 Huskers, with them recovering a late Illinois onside kick attempt to Ice the game. So, 8 points, but a close 8 points.

Re: Nebraska Football 2020
Q4 14:00, Huskers score TD to make lead 35-13
Q4 10:00, Illinois scores TD to make score 35-20
Q4 2:45, Illinois scores TD to make score 35-27
Illinois kicks touchback. Nebraska stuffed on first down, Illinois time out. Nebraska swing pass on second down, complete, gain of two, runner tackled out of bounds. Nebraska QB run, tackled short of line to gain. Illinois timeout. Nebraska punts
Illinois gets ball back on own 25 yard line with 2:30 left and one time out, proceeds to get two first downs, takes it to 3rd down sack of Illinois QB clock running and 10 seconds left, 4th and 17 where they attempt to lateral down field, break free, Huskers make shoestring tackle on free ball carrier at Husker 8 yard line to spoil Illinois' hopes of tying.
How I bet it will go. You know they always like to make the fans nervous when leading.

Another close game, NU pulls it out. Having fewer turnovers and penalties last week really helped the Huskers towards victory. They need another clean game. They aren’t good enough to play sloppy and win.

This has been an absolutely pathetic performance by the Huskers thus far.. Against Illinois. It’s not like they’re playing an Ohio St..
It’s inexcusable really..and the kind of performance that leads to coaches getting fired...

It is pretty pathetic. But you can’t fire the coach Nebraska has dug its own financial grave by giving coaches HUGE salaries and then extensions for little results. Sorry the Huskers are just going to be one of those other teams until they develop some stability and firing one coach and then bringing in another who has to work with the old coach’s recruits for 2-3 years isn’t going to do it.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Sat Nov 21, 2020 12:39 pm

That said, this is the type of game performance, that by 2022, if this football program has not seen positive progress, the “powers that be” will look at- with a critical eye (hopefully) and can contribute to a coaches termination.. Which is what I specifically meant in my last post..
Just to clarify...

He has to fired and until then it is 100% hopeless for Nebraska. The football program is dead now and it can't fix itself. By this time next year the Frost era at Nebraska will be coming to a much needed end. We need a new coach and a good quarterback and Nebraska could be back in business and until then we are the cupcake team.Uffda wrote: Sat Nov 21, 2020 1:18 pmIt is pretty pathetic. Just my opinion but there should be no surprise for Nebraska losing to Northwestern or Illinois because both those programs are clearly a couple of notches better then the Nebraska program.

They won’t fire Frost this season because of the Pandemic. But I’m wondering he may decide on his own that he doesn’t want to coach at Nebraska anymore and just resign on his own. This environment cannot be good for him mentally or physically. Don’t really see how he recovers from this unless he pulls off at least one upset in the final three games. What a mess.

I imagine he would walk thru fire before he would walk away from Nebraska without getting paid those millions! Now when he gets fired what is his future from there? If I was him I would sell the house in Lincoln and move back to sunny Florida on day 1. Hes got enough money to literally retire to paradise and vacation for the rest of his life.Cermak wrote: Sat Nov 21, 2020 2:39 pm They won’t fire Frost this season because of the Pandemic. He should have enough money right now to retire comfortably . He shouldn’t have to grab every last million from Nebraska. Martinez needs to start next week , then maybe put McCaffrey in if need be.GrandpaaSmucker wrote: Sat Nov 21, 2020 3:49 pmI imagine he would walk thru fire before he would walk away from Nebraska without getting paid those millions! McCaffrey can’t pass good enough to play QB in the BIG10. I didn’t realize this last week. Play Martinez at QB and get McCaffrey on the field as a receiver . Martinez throws just good enough that teams need to respect his passing. But I still think Martinez will throw at least one interception next week. Nebraska is probably looking at a 1 win season in 2020, unbelievable.Uffda wrote: Sat Nov 21, 2020 6:50 pmThis shows how fickle many Husker fans are — last week you wrote this “ McCaffrey doesn’t throw the prettiest pass but I think his football IQ is higher than Martinez. ”Cermak wrote: Sat Nov 21, 2020 4:38 pm . Re: Nebraska Football 2020
I generally have thought they will let him fulfill his entire contract, which is though (202?) Didn't he get an extension? Husker Football is already a mess, what difference does two extra years of this make? if he can't show improvement in year 4 or 5, then it wasn't meant to be. But I struggle to name anybody who would do better with what we currently have. Can't just bring in a new coach every three years and expect to "win now". It's not like the 'Skers are in a position like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It's going to take a long, slow, frustrating process to bring Husker ball anywhere near where we want it, if it ever gets close. Strap in, Husker fans.Uffda wrote: Sat Nov 21, 2020 6:50 pmThis shows how fickle many Husker fans are — last week you wrote this “ McCaffrey doesn’t throw the prettiest pass but I think his football IQ is higher than Martinez. ”Cermak wrote: Sat Nov 21, 2020 4:38 pm . Re: Nebraska Football 2020
While I understand Nebraska not being in a position to make a coaching change after this season, they would be justified in doing so. Any other coach would be all but terminated by this point. If coaches must be given 5-7 years to even reach .500, Mike Riley should still be coaching at Nebraska. He performed better than Frost and had a terrible administration working against him. Frost has been given everything he wants. Yet, in year 3, he and his staff failed to realize they didn't have enough players on the field during a fake punt.
I don't believe Frost is completely destined for failure. But so far, he has failed. It's going to get harder as well. No progress has been made. His players seem upset, and recruits are taking notice. It's also going to be open season on next year's transfer market. That's bad for a system that appears to need elite talent just to move the chains.
If a coaching change is needed, it should be done ASAP. Letting the failure continue is bad for everybody, including the next coach. It's ok to admit this staff didn't work out. It happens all the time. Cut your losses, and hope the next one shows some promise. It's not like Nebraska is going to attract a proven, high level coach anyways. There aren't even that many elite coaches out there.

From the W-H-
“The crown should not be awarded without extensive deliberation. The competition is stiffer than a north November wind.
We must dig deep into our memories. Sift through the carnage in pursuit of truth. On such an important matter, we must not be prisoners of the moment.
But Nebraska — a 16-point favorite — lost to Illinois 41-23 Saturday inside a nearly empty Memorial Stadium, a performance so ugly that cardboard cutouts would’ve streamed for the exits after three quarters if only they could. A performance so putrid that alternate jerseys must be retired forever. A performance so skunky that Scott Frost could spend Thanksgiving week in a steam bath and he still wouldn’t wash it off.
Was that the worst Nebraska football performance in 59 years?
But this much is indisputable: 28 games into the Frost era, we shouldn’t be asking this question.“..

Yeah its time for a coaching change now. Nothing good can come from waiting. The next coach does not have to be an elite coach but he does have to be someone with years and years of experience running a NFL or College football team. No more rookies!
All we heard from Frost and Moos was how they were going to "Change the culture"........They did not change the culture of loosing they perfected it.

Stability only works when the current state is either a 'good stable' (winning games), or is improving (which it is not).

Re: Nebraska Football 2020
At this point, what I believe will happen- is that if we have a complete, 12 game 2021 college football season..and the Huskers are still running in the 4-8 to 6-6 record zone, Frost’s job security will be reevaluated at that point before heading into 2022..
Pathetic losses like yesterday have to be creeping into recruit’s heads as well. I think I stated this in an earlier post, but I also believe Frost gets a “covid anomaly” pass for this season.. But in 2021, the arrow must start pointing up..and the Huskers need to come through with (at least) a 7-5 record.. If not, see my 1st paragraph..
Iowa destroyed Penn St yesterday, I think the needle is pointing to the Hawkeye’s putting a hurt on NU this Friday in Iowa City.. We’ll see about that.. The last 2 Husker-Hawkeye matchups have come down to the wire...

Re: Nebraska Football 2020
If he can get 6-6 next year, I think it would be fair to give him one more crack... As you said, if it is a regular 12 game season. Like I said earlier, I really don't know who would want to try/could do better in the position than Frost currently. I say just ride out the contract, get used to it, see what happens.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Sun Nov 22, 2020 12:02 pm But in 2021, the arrow must start pointing up..and the Huskers need to come through with (at least) a 7-5 record.. .

They already are - the article mentioned 2 recruits earlier but only one comment is still up.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Sun Nov 22, 2020 12:02 pm

Recruits seemed to notice, too. Tight end Thomas Fidone, NU’s top recruit in the 2021 class, also had a notable tweet.
“I’m not sure what to think,” he wrote.

Odds makers have Iowa as a 14 1/2 point favorite over the Huskers Friday. That is too many points but I'll take Iowa still. If the players bring their lawyers then maybe I will bet on Nebraska.

Re: Nebraska Football 2020
Exactly. People seem to think stability is a cure. Does Riley become a better coach if he gets year 4? Do the beat downs stop if Pelini gets 8 or 9 years instead of 7? No, good coaching is the cure. TO wasn't successful because he coached for 25 years. He had success because he was a damn good coach.MadMartin8 wrote: Sun Nov 22, 2020 12:00 pm
Stability only works when the current state is either a 'good stable' (winning games), or is improving (which it is not).
I understand everyone has a different opinion about when a coach isn't going to pan out. But at some point, that decision has to be made. I just hope the powers at Nebraska can be objective about Frost.
