I can name off the top of my head three rubenesque/curvy WX women, including one nearby. If that's a trend, I can get behind it.bbinks wrote: Wed Nov 25, 2020 6:00 amAppearance is a whole new discussion. I guess I like Bill, Matt, and Sean alright. But they're not cute. So the draw might be a little less.bbinks wrote: Tue Nov 24, 2020 6:51 pm I just want accurate forecasting more often than not. Long ago, Ron Gerrard was actually pretty good.
Too many times nowadays I look at the online forecast, and get rained on on my early morning walks when the forecast said no rain.

In any case, for me, it’s not about how they look physically..or whether they’re female or male- I’m more interested in how the said on air talent delivers the news/weather/sports and if they choose to be on social media (which they most all do these days) how transparent and honest are they with their “followers”..
Omaha is a mid major television market which means stability of on air talent is more rare than, say, what you’d find in a top 10 market.. So what interests me, to this point, is how honest/transparent is the local TV personality if/when they decide to jump ship.. Lately, I’ve discovered there is not much of either. The pattern is- they stop interacting, socially, with their “followers” for about 2 weeks. Then it comes out they jump ship to another, larger market..then they become social butterflies again in their new home and ignore any evidence they ever existed in Omaha’s media market.. I dunno. But that irks me..
In the end, it’s human nature. I get over it lol. But as I’ve always contended, I much prefer receiving my news/weather/sports from on air personnel that wants to be here..and I’ll always be interested in the “revolving door” aspect of the Omaha media market...

At a minimum, at least one. KETV is running their “weather now” crew with a skeletal number of only 3 meteorologists. They should have 5 total. So hopefully they pick up one pretty quickly- before the Christmas holiday at least..and another after the 1st of the year..ajwees41 wrote: Wed Nov 25, 2020 5:54 pmwill they replace both or just one?Omaha Cowboy wrote: Tue Nov 24, 2020 11:51 pm In any case, turning the page-

But that’s what this thread is for.. To talk about local Omaha media and provide our opinions.. Of course, you’re welcome to chime in that it’s “none of our darn business” and that’s fine and your opinion..
In the end, these TV on air “personalities” are subject to public scrutiny..and they are all on social media being “social butterflies” for the most part.. So when one is absent, for no apparent reason, or one bails on Omaha, they are fair game for us to discuss here..
Again, that’s what this particular thread is for...

In an announcement which at this point, should surprise no one, Laurann Robinson finally made it official and announced on her FB page today she is leaving KETV and Omaha and returning to Los Angeles to be with her family..
That it took 5 weeks before she made it “official” is a bit puzzling to me.. But at least we can close the door on this one.. I wish her well..
Now KETV needs to get on the stick and hire at least one on air meteorologist as soon as possible...

I don’t think a jump from Omaha to Los Angeles is that strange at all. It’s happened before. Omaha may be a mid major market, but it’s not a small or starter market.. Plus, she’s from Southern California..Busguy2010 wrote: Sun Nov 29, 2020 8:23 pmWhat is strange is it doesn't seem apparent she left to pursue another TV job. If the pattern holds true, we’ll next see Laurann emerge in her new, larger market.. LA or otherwise.. Then she’ll become a social butterfly once again.. I suspect this will happen either just before or just after the Christmas/New Year holiday season...

This sort of may be both on and off topic. It does have to do with news. But you know what's a rarity? For someone born in Nebraska to move to Spokane, WA, to do the local news up there. One example is Charles Rowe. He was born in Chadron, but he co-anchored the evening newscasts for KREM 2 (Spokane's CBS affiliate) from 1987 to 2007 when he retired.
In a way, Spokane's like Omaha–A mid major news market. Except it's in the Pacific Northwest instead of the Midwest.

Yup, that's where he went. In fact, I used to live there. As I already said, KREM 2 is the CBS affiliate for the city. The call letters are pronounced like a word–crem. KXLY 4 is the ABC affiliate. And KHQ (6) is the NBC affiliate. For decades, they called themselves "Q6". They still use that ID today, then they shied away from calling themselves that for a while, but now they're starting to call themselves Q6 again. KSKN 22 is their CW affiliate. They're a satellite for KREM. KAYU 28 is the Fox affiliate.damonhynes wrote: Thu Dec 03, 2020 1:20 pmGrace Polanski went from OMA to BUF. Those are the stations in Spokane.
In fact, Spokane has their own John Knicely. In this case, Dan Kleckner. He's been at Q6 for a very long time. Since the mid 80's. He used to do the sports, but then he switched to news in the late 90's and has been doing it ever since.

So, to wrap up the Laurann Robinson/KETV saga in a “tidy bowl” (you know where I’m going with this)..
In a move I predicted when she disappeared from the KETV airwaves after Oct 22nd-
It turns out nothing was wrong with Laurann at all. She just needed to escape Omaha for about 7 or so weeks, run home to LA- then proudly announce today on her Facebook page she has joined the KUSA Channel 9 News weather team in Denver, Colorado..
Once again, zero transparency.. In a typical Molly Bernard move, her social media went dark for nearly 2 months..then viola! She reappeares with this announcement we should all be “so happy for her” with..
Whatever..
Also typical- Omaha treated like a used doormat once again.. I wish her well I guess...

Still, it just bugs me when Omaha gets used like a doormat.. And you or I are not , I’d also reckon, on social media listing ourselves as a “personality” with thousands of “fan followers” either.. So there is a difference.. sure, they don’t owe their “fan followers” anything. But it would be nice to see honesty and transparency every once and awhile.. I just get annoyed when I see Omaha get “Bernarded”.. That’s all
But, like said a couple weeks ago, I get over the annoyance and move on...

I've had many friends in the TV news business over the years. It's the game they're all forced to play. You start out in the smaller markets and climb the ladder. Its amazing the pay differential from the small to large markets. Its nothing about them and their like/dislike of Omaha. Purely about the exposure, proving yourself, and then finding a job higher up the viewership list. They're barely making minimum wages at the smallest of markets.

Re: Omaha Local News Channels
With Omaha bring a mid-major market, I’d suspect the pay is decent here..and we do have consistency with some in the TV media who do stay in Omaha long term.. But the market isn’t large enough to retain everyone..so it’s understandable the desire of many to move up the market food chain..
I’d suspect if one was working in TV market #250, the pay is likely minimal and the expectation is to move, progressively, up the ranks. Once you get to the Omaha level, we start to see some stick around more long term..
That’s what I’ve noticed over the years anyway...

Everything is relative but TV reporters in Omaha are not paid well at all, so I doubt the junior meteorologists are, either.

Give me a ballpark figure. I used to be in retail. Starting salaries for new managers was $58,000.PWL73316 wrote: Thu Dec 17, 2020 3:07 pm Everything is relative but TV reporters in Omaha are not paid well at all, so I doubt the junior meteorologists are, either.

You watch the news in larger TV markets like Chicago and much of the on air talent is older often 50’s and 60’s. The money is good so they stick around as long as they can. Markets like Omaha are to small to make much money so most people bail out as soon as they can. Occasionally you will have someone like Knicely or Randby that land a good contract but that is the exception more than the rule.

Which is why I don't buy the excuse of Jim Flowers making too much money for the reason he parted WOWT .. not with Knicely sitting at the same anchor desk.Cermak wrote: Fri Dec 18, 2020 8:21 pm You watch the news in larger TV markets like Chicago and much of the on air talent is older often 50’s and 60’s.
