"URGENT - WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE
National Weather Service Omaha/Valley NE
1026 PM CST Sun Dec 27 2020

...Snow and Ice Return to the Area...

A potentially significant winter storm will impact the region
beginning late Monday night, continuing into Wednesday. Impactful
snow appears likely, with some ice accumulation possible.
Combined snow, ice, and winds are expected to make hazardous
travel for the area."

...

Nothing that we didn't already know. It is now a watch, but sounds likely it could easily turn into a warning at some point tomorrow night or early Tuesday morning.

Starting to look more like 6" of snow volume falling out of the sky, but rain/freezing rain/ice may limit the amount of physically measurable accumulation, and that would make for a bigger travel headache than just snow.

I hope ya'll have Tuesday/Wednesday off or can take them off. Starting to sound like its gonna be a really rough go of it.

Cold, cloudy, windy, wet, icy, snowy day on tap. Probably gonna be an absolutely miserable day, but I love variety in my weather, personally. Even when it sucks.

I watched KETV meteorologist Sean Everson’s forecast Sunday night and he predicted the impact for freezing rain and ice to be low. He has Omaha in the 3-6 inch range for snow. Looks like just a Tuesday event as the storm will be clearing out overnight and gone by Wednesday morning..

Still hoping the warm air pushes far enough north into Omaha so we see the snow totals on the low end of the spectrum...

Looks like a heavy wet snow. Glad we are getting the moisture as it’s been a dry year.

The NWS really dialed back on the freezing rain part of their forecast, backed off on the snow to 5". Upgraded to a winter weather advisory now though...

...WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 6 AM TUESDAY TO 6 AM
CST WEDNESDAY...

"* WHAT...Mixed precipitation expected. Total snow accumulations of 4 to 6 inches and ice accumulations of up to one tenth of an inch."...

Still no small snow storm. I can be happy with it if it stays in the range of 5", but it sounds to me like it won't be the amazing memorable type we were hearing about a few days ago. I'll just be happy to see some snow flying, and hopefully they are the big flakes. At least it sounds like they could be.

I'm now thinking Wednesday morning will be fine. It went from being strong all-day/all-night, to pretty much over by 7pm, thus the reduction in snow total forecast. NWS currently going back and forth between 5" and 6", but it'll end so early that streets ought to be in good shape by the morning.

As of noon, I measured 5.5" on my back porch, multiple spots and out in the open.

It all happened quite a bit earlier than I was expecting. Sounded like the bulk of it was going to be between noon and dark, but we've already got most of what we're going to get, and it looks like it'll be done snowing around 3 or 4, switching over to freezing rain.

I wonder how high the moisture content is though. I just went outside and kicked some snow around and it was the light fluffy stuff as opposed to the heavy wet stuff...

Not in my case. I doubt, and really wouldn't expect my street to be plowed until late tonight or tomorrow. I heard Dodge street was only plowed one lane in each direction a couple hours ago. Some streets might not get plowed at all as is often the case in northeast Omaha.

I read in the W-H, plows were to begin working on neighborhood streets by 4pm. So if they’re true to schedule, they should have just started working on them minutes ago...

I shoveled too, it was heavy to me because there was 7 or so inches of it. But it was the lighter, fluffy snow. Not the heavy, wet, good for snowballs snow..

I dunno. Maybe you got different snow in your part of the city than I did...

It did have a different type of consistency..... Kind of a dry, more compacted powdery feel. It was heavier to shovel than I thought it should be. It stuck to the shovel, snowblower, and plow too. The Eskimos probably have a more specific name for it. https://www.washingtonpost.com/nationa ... story.html

Haha, nice link :thumb: .. You and I seemed to have a similar experience with snow removal today..

I like the name- Champagne Powder.. Powder is a nice description of the snow from today. There was just a lot of it.. Certainly different from the wet, heavy good for snowballs snow we got a couple weeks back...

Fairly decent snow storm. I think bigger than anything we had last year. This is the most snow we’ve had on the ground since the snowy winter of 2018/2019. My snowblower is getting a good workout.

NWS data shows .51 inch moisture content from that 6.8” snow event. I don”t know if that includes a little bit of rain mixed in, but that’s a pretty good amount of moisture for such a powdery snow. I read that “champagne powder” was actually trademarked by Steamboat Springs ski area in Colorado since they were known for their super powdery dry fluffy snow common in the drier western slopes of Colorado. I don’t think our latest snow, however dry it was, would pass their test for “Champagne powder.” But I’ll take it anyway. 8)

In all, not the most moisture rich snow we’ve seen.. In any case-

I’d love to see a stretch now- where we have high temps moving into the upper 30’s into the 40’s..so we can get a goodly amount of this frozen precipitation mess melted...

It will be January in Omaha though. More likely than not the temperature will stay below freezing... More likely well below freezing on your typical January day. And the forecast looks to be that way for the forecast period.

But with 2020 coming to an end and the next meager (barely mentionable) snowfall projected to fall on January 1'st 2021, I'd say its about time to stick a fork in the 2020 weather thread and move onto the 2021 thread when something noteworthy comes through.

Agreed. Bring on 2021 !

Looking back, I think we’ll remember the August Derecho as the most noteworthy weather event of 2020, even though it just brushed Omaha.

I think I probably have to agree. I really don't remember anything else, and it's too bad I really just slept through that one too. Yeah I really can't recall anything else... Been yet another rather uneventful year. And a lot of what did happen happened in the early a.m., so they weren't really watchable.

I'd say the snowstorms we've had so far this winter have been pretty nice. I think we've had about 14" already. Nice way to make up some ground on that drought.

I see upper 30’s to close to 40 forecasted for Mon/Tues next week. Hopefully we’ll start melting this frozen mess down a bit.. Also, Hopefully, we’ll get a break from the snow/frozen precipitation for awhile..

That 2020 August Derecho was so intense. There are multiple videos on YouTube showing it slamming into eastern Iowa. Scary stuff. I’m just grateful it pretty much missed the Omaha metro...
