Re: Nebraska Football 2021-
It’s hard to say how good McCaffrey was going to be anyway. He was a shaky passer and his style of play (running all the time) was very predictable and lent itself to frequent injuries. He didn’t even suit up for the last game against Rutgers. I think ultimately he would of been switched to a receiver and 3rd string QB if he would of stayed at Nebraska. But Frost needs to fix this transfer portal situation as players now leave at the drop of a hat, it never used to be this way.
Frost will have everything riding on Martinez next year. I do think Martinez showed improvement this season over his lackluster sophomore year . At times he looks really good, but needs to get more consistent, his inconsistency and turnovers have been his biggest problem.

It never used to be that way because the no consequences system that the transfer portal has in place is very new.Cermak wrote: Wed Jan 27, 2021 7:34 am It’s hard to say how good McCaffrey was going to be anyway. Re: Nebraska Football 2021-
The argument that the transfer portal is creating a wild west mentality only goes so far. Mitch Sherman tweeted out the transfer numbers today and Nebraska is near the top of the leaderboard amongst their peers in the Big Ten in terms of players entering the transfer portal since December 1, 2019...
Maryland: 29
Nebraska: 24
Rutgers: 20
Penn St: 15
Illinois: 14
Purdue: 14
Michigan: 14
Michigan St.: 14
Minnesota: 11
Iowa: 10
Northwestern: 10
Indiana: 8
Wisconsin: 7
Ohio St: 5
Something else I saw said the total number for Nebraska is 39 in 3 years. What does this list tell us? Predictably, the stable programs that are having on field success tend to be losing fewer players. It doesn't really take a rocket scientist to predict that, but I think around here, there are those that are still looking at the Frost regime with rose colored glasses and continue to say "everything is fine" and "trust the process."
I think the number of players in the transfer portal is simply indicative of the level of chaos and failure that is continuing to permeate the Frost regime 3 years in. This is the sum of a losing record, poor talent evaluation, lack of identity in terms of offensive schemes and playcalling, concern by players over the long term viability of the coaching staff, and the overall dark cloud that is surrounding the program. Losing isn't fun. You'll continue to see this as long as Frost and company continue to flounder.
The only thing that people can continue to point at for a positive for the Frost regime is that he continues to recruit well...on paper. Yes, he's getting some 4 star athletes, but it doesn't mean much if they don't pan out. The number of 4 star athletes that come in and either never develop or leave through the transfer portal negates any real positives of the superficial class rankings.
Look at schools like Iowa, Northwestern, Wisconsin, and Indiana that have been doing very well with lower ranked classes, but more team unity, and better player development. I'd take a lower rated class if the on field product was better. It's all just fluff at this point to point to recruiting rankings. The proof is on the field...and in the transfer portal.

What you speak of here is all true and can be shown to be 100% accurate. Were watching another one of those really bad movies here. Moos and Frost have got nothing, never had nothing and never will have nothing. The only thing Frost and Moos have is an amazing ability to hold onto their jobs despite the fact they are horrible at them. These two dictators are running their only little coup here and they got their own version of reality. They got a Fox News style media outlet in the forms of Sean Callahan and Tom Shatel to help them sell the lies and conspiracies to the fans. Like I said its a bad movie but have faith we will get out of this disaster one day when these two get the axe.

You get Tom Shatel to write a flowery puff piece about how it's still the scarlet and the cream and how the hot dogs smell on gameday as you're walking into the stadium and you see that field. And, did we mention that sellout streak: best fans in college football for over 50 years running. Frost will get there, it'll take time. Then, you have Dirk Chatelain bring in the hammer like he usually does...
https://omaha.com/sports/huskers/footba ... -top-story
He didn't swing the hammer too hard today, but don't kid yourself, this was the first salvo. If things continue, the coverage from bad cop Dirk will get more negative...but, then they'll have Shatel write another article reminiscing about Scott Frost's touchdown runs against Washington in 1997 when his back was against the wall and how we have to give him more time.
As for Frost and Moos, I don[t really blame either of them. Jobs were open, and they took them. Moos made the only hire the fanbase would accept. Frost took the job he essentially had to take if he ever wanted to be welcome back in Lincoln and not seen as a villain.
Really, the fanbase got what it wanted, in literally the worst way. I remember all the insane clamoring for Frost when it was clear that Pelini was likely getting fired at the tail end of 2014. It was nuts how many people wanted an OC with very little experience just based on his Nebraska ties back then. He wasn't ready in 2014, and it's clear he wasn't ready after 2017.
Can it be salvaged? I'm not sure. But, I feel like we'll know much more after 2021. In my opinion, it's 3rd and 25 on the Frost regime right now. He will need a big gain to keep the drive alive. Another step backwards and it may be time to punt on 4th down.

At this point I could almost see Frost calling an impromptu press conference and announcing that he has a drinking problem or suffers from schizophrenia and asking for everyone’s understanding. It really does seem like he’s just not up to the job. Something is terribly wrong with this program and nobody can figure out what it is. This has really been hard on the fans and I’m not sure if we can see any light at the end of the tunnel. I never thought we would get this bad, we pretty much suck.

The transfer portal is the worst thing to happen to CFB. Div 1 is like an NFL AAA-level. I'd rather watch cricket on Charter Spectrum.

Look.....Luke McCaffrey made a very bad decision coming to Nebraska. It is not fair or right that he be forced to stay here. Period! Any system that forces people who have made bad choices to remain in bad places is corrupt and dubious. Luke has been punished enough for making a big mistake and he does not owe Nebraska or Scott Frost any more of his blood.damonhynes wrote: Thu Jan 28, 2021 9:10 pm The transfer portal is the worst thing to happen to CFB. The problem here is Luke deserved a fair shot at the quarterback position and he did not get it. Just like Noah Vedral he is going to go somewhere else next year and start at quarterback on a team that ends up doing better then the train wreck Nebraska program. We know that is the way this story turns out.

Re: Nebraska Football 2021-
I read this morning that Nebraska's returning RB group has a total of 116 yards on 37 carries after Mills left and Robinson transferred. Yikes. They have a couple of young players and a transfer coming in at that position, but this doesn't inspire confidence that Frost will be able to turn the offense around short term. You couple that knowing that Martinez really can't hit the broad side of a barn passing, and the receiver corps are already thin...and it looks like the recipe for another losing season and more excuses. Maybe the transfers will work out, but recent history doesn't make it seem likely.
I'll say it now, if Frost goes 4 for 4 in terms of losing seasons in his first four seasons, it's probably time to move on. Honestly, he needs something like a 7-5 next year to keep his job.
Looking at the schedule, I think 7-5 is possible, but it's going to take much more than they've shown in the first 3 years. Another 4-5 win season is just as likely. I can't see any coach keeping his job at Nebraska having four seasons of 5 wins or less.
Time is running out. At some point, you either do or you don't.

Re: Nebraska Football 2021-
Also, Nebraska fans should be embracing the transfer system. If you get the right coach that knows how to use the system and has a solid culture in his program, it would be an easy way to rebuild. You can rebuild much more quickly in this environment now than you could have 15 years ago where a total rebuild was a long haul of 3-5 years.
The fact Frost can't hold on to his players says more about him as a coach and the overall dark clouds gathering around the program than the state of college football. Other programs are making the system work. Nebraska just now happens to be one of the weak sisters of the poor and the woe is me act is glaring.

Re: Nebraska Football 2021-
I don't have any first hand accounts, so take that for what it's worth, but could it be the mindset of the kids themselves? Specifically, I'm referring to the way society has shifted towards that 'immediate gratification' mentality. The really gifted athletes have the ability to go anywhere and start, whereas the kid who wants to work hard and will do their best is destined to stay put so they don't ride the bench somewhere else. So maybe when Scott Frost tries to be fair and honest and expect more, it may be easier to just say "F" it and go somewhere else. It certainly isn't his ability to attract talent, or do good things with the talent he gets. When he was at Oregon, they had a great offense and a great team. When he was at UCF, he made an immediate change and built an excellent program and went undefeated back to back. I think a lot the current problem is that kids are willing to leave for somewhere else who is having success NOW rather than waiting and being part of the journey towards greatness.Cermak wrote: Thu Jan 28, 2021 8:32 pm At this point I could almost see Frost calling an impromptu press conference and announcing that he has a drinking problem or suffers from schizophrenia and asking for everyone’s understanding. That is an unwarranted insult to McCaffrey and all the transfer students. How is 3 years in a row of pathetic losing week in and week out a "Journey to greatness."

The forecast for 2021 College Football Season vs the Virus does not look good. It was obvious 2 or 3 months ago that first game in Ireland was never going to happen. Moos says he will make it official next week but yeah it ain't happening. So we play them in Illinois. Even though illinois just got a new coach I'm still going to say that Illinois will be a 5 1/2 point favorite at kickoff.

Re: Nebraska Football 2021-
Explain to me, oh perpetuator of all things negative, how that's an insult to McCaffery if it may very well be true? If he was satisfied with his role on the team, he'd still be here, correct? He wants to play quarterback, and that's ok. But he's not going to be named starter when his performance isn't on par with Martinez. I think they should have used him as a wide out or running back, because he clearly has talent. But that's neither here nor there. Again, for many of these athletes it's more about the "I" than it is "team." They can tell reporters it's not about this or that, or that it's 'not the right fit' but I cannot fathom that Frost is SUCH a bad coach to play for that you wouldn't want to stay on the team. Not when he has a proven track record of success prior to coming here. Fact is, it's cold, it's remote, and Nebraska doesn't offer some of the same advantages they had from the glory years. So if someone can play where it's warm, where they are successful NOW and get drafted, they are more likely to entertain the prospect of moving, since they are allowed to without a dent in eligibility.GrandpaaSmucker wrote: Wed Feb 03, 2021 5:24 pmthenewguy wrote: Wed Feb 03, 2021 3:04 pm I think a lot the current problem is that kids are willing to leave for somewhere else who is having success NOW rather than waiting and being part of the journey towards greatness.

How is 3 years in a row of pathetic losing week in and week out a "Journey to greatness."Ultimately this is a business and Frost is making his millions by selling the public a line of total B.S. Good for Scott and bad for Nebraska. That being said, sticking around Nebraska and helping Frost run his scam is the hard way for MCcaffrey and the other transfer athletes to make their millions. While it may be easy for Frost to sell Nebraska fans a bum steer it is not easy for the players to sell NFL scouts a bunch of hope and lies. I am rooting for McCaffrey and all the other players that have transferred out of here. All players for their own best good should stay clear of the Nebraska program until Frost and Moos get fired.
The point I am making is that college football has been changed. The portal has made it harder for a lot, and easier for few. Sure, there are coaches that are truly great, and are doing great things (Iowa state, Minnesota, etc), and of course not all programs are created equal. But you will see more players leaving midlevel programs, rather than sticking it out, if they think it's going to land them in the NFL.

Letting McCaffey only start a couple of games was not giving him a fair chance. He started the Penn State game and we won that game. The important thing is we won that game. It was the biggest win of the season. McCaffrey's brother Dylan transferred out of Michigan yesterday and will be playing for Northern Colorado coached by his Dad. They got a plan. You can bet Luke shows up somewhere and is the new quarterback.thenewguy wrote: Thu Feb 04, 2021 10:27 am

We got two sons of famous former NFL players and they are both blowing out of here at the same time. That might be some kind of new record. I think it is saying a lot more then just we now have a transfer portal.

I see where your head is at, but I think it may rest more on the shoulders of the individuals, rather than the coaches. I could be completely wrong, but I cannot see a failure in the coaching staff as the reasoning why when their methods have been fruitful elsewhere. But at the end of the day, we may never know what is driving these departures, so for now I'm going to trust in their assurances that everything is fine.GrandpaaSmucker wrote: Thu Feb 04, 2021 12:14 pmLetting McCaffey only start a couple of games was not giving him a fair chance. "successful elsewhere" is somewhat of an apples to oranges statement. I think Scott Frost has been humbled by being a Power Five head coach, and more specifically a Power Five head coach in the Big Ten conference.thenewguy wrote: Thu Feb 04, 2021 2:29 pmI see where your head is at, but I think it may rest more on the shoulders of the individuals, rather than the coaches. You can't say that it's the same thing to have success at Oregon as a position coach and eventually three years as an OC to running and rebuilding an entire program. Also, the mindset and realities of a Pac 12 program aren't the same as the Big Ten. Being a successful head coach at a mid major school in the American conference, in a fertile recruiting ground, can barely even be compared to running a Big Ten school with more specialized challenges.
It's like saying that a doctor that is an exceptional general practitioner will automatically be an amazing brain surgeon because he's had success in his field. It simply doesn't work that way.
I don't think Frost understood what it was going to take to compete in the Big Ten. He overestimated his own offensive acumen and thought he could transplant that to Nebraska, and it would work, with whatever players he had here in the moment and that he'd have such success that it would immediately translate to top talent coming here. He underestimated the physicality of the Big Ten and the kind of line play that is required to compete. He underestimated the recruiting issues at Nebraska. Rather than bringing in a staff that had proven success recruiting in Big Ten hotbeds, he brought his UCF staff and figured his name and the immediate success they'd have here would translate to kids clamoring to play for him. None of it has worked. Some of it was bad luck in games, but much of it is on the coaches. And, in the end, you typically get what you deserve in the long run.
The castle has been built on sand and poor planning. Now, they are in year four trying to salvage something that was poorly planned and executed. It is no wonder that kids are looking to jump ship, because this simply isn't what they were sold and I'm guessing the fact the emperor seems to have no clothes is likely more apparent to those within the program than to those on the outside.

Not the best dresser either. He needs to dress better than this .Looks like he’s going to his neighborhood cookout or something, Not what a 5 million dollar a year coach should wear in my opinion. Hawkeyes and Minnesota head coach dress sharper than this when representing their University. Look at the wrinkled shorts and missing sock, totally Disgusting. This is a serious important job ! Not sure if he’s ever grasped that concept. We aren’t getting our money’s worth from this knucklehead. The recruit is dressed better than him. I would like to see Frost hire a image consultant to help him in public appearances, he needs it. Nobody is beyond needing a little self improvement.

Is that picture legit? If so, it's funny. But, the mismatched socks almost look photoshopped. Even when clicked on, it's not the highest resolution photo.Cermak wrote: Thu Feb 04, 2021 10:39 pm

I also think it's probably some kind of ankle wrap or compression sock on the right foot. Probably after a surgery or injury.

Really hard to find more than 4 wins in Nebraska’s 2021 schedule. Looks like another rough year . 4-8 looks like the most probable scenario. 5 or 6 wins would be about the best we could expect. I would be happy with 6. Frost must be sick of losing.

Re: Nebraska Football 2021-
If they end up with 4 wins, I can't see a scenario where Frost keeps his job. Contract or no, how do you keep anyone on board from the players, staff, to the fanbase? that would leave Scott Frost after year four with a record of 16-28 (assuming no Covid cancellations).Cermak wrote: Sat Feb 06, 2021 8:16 am Really hard to find more than 4 wins in Nebraska’s 2021 schedule. If it was anyone outside of a native son, we wouldn't be having a keep him or let him go conversation with that kind of record. I'd be on board with punting if he only gets 4 wins next year. For me, 6 wins is the absolute minimum for him to keep his job.

I think it should be 7 regular season wins, quite frankly..omaha79 wrote: Mon Feb 15, 2021 12:05 pm For me, 6 wins is the absolute minimum for him to keep his job.
But the bar is set so low these days you’re probably right.. Husker Nation and the University administration will likely accept a non winning 6-6 2021 regular season as validation for Frost to coach the 2022 season..assuming the variable of Covid not throwing a monkey wrench into the mix...
Ciao..LiO...Peace
Go Cowboys!

I honestly don't know, is that much of an upgrade over Nebraska?

If they are promising you playing time, it's an upgrade. But, sad state of affairs when players are leaving Nebraska for greener pastures at a 3 win team. But, really, yeah, it's probably just down to what playing time they are promising.skinzfan23 wrote: Mon Feb 22, 2021 1:12 pmI honestly don't know, is that much of an upgrade over Nebraska?

Re: Nebraska Football 2021-
I'm guessing it's a combination of factors. Obviously, a huge soul crushing 40 point loss on on national tv won't be a good look in year 4 of Frost. So, there are some elements of cowardice to this. But, I'm sure it's also having to do with huge athletic department shortfalls across the board which is pushing them to try to get another home game in expectation of full capacity at Memorial Stadium by fall.

Either they haven't told Oklahoma yet, or McMurphy is full of McCrap. Equally possible.

This sounds like premature reporting to me. Like if someone walked down your suburban street and overheard you say "Maybe we'll just paint the house safety orange" and runs to your HOA to tell on you even though they failed to hear you continue, saying "LOL JK that would be crazy".
Or it could be true... But to me it just sounds too self-destructive to even be true. I just don't buy it, but I guess we'll know when we hear from UNL.

Re: Nebraska Football 2021-
Oh come on its true and we all know it is! What it really sadly shows the most is that Frost and Moos are still just as stupid and out of touch with the Covid this season as they were last year. We got basketball teams that are now blowing out of March Madness due to the "V" and these overly optimistic science hating morons still think that in 5 months we are going to be filling up Memorial Stadium.Busguy2010 wrote: Fri Mar 12, 2021 12:36 pm This sounds like premature reporting to me. And 84 years later, Moos finally releases a statement saying the game is still on, but admits to seeking anothet home game due to Covidy impacts.
Damage already done though in the short term; this took on a life of its own before Molasses Moos finally released the statement.

Makes me feel like this was just part of the decision making process that happens every year, month, week, day, hour.. And somehow that info got into the wrong hands. Dam social media makes it too easy to spread misinformed information. I don't give this any weight whatsoever.

Re: Nebraska Football 2021-
Trying to replace a game six months from now is not normal at all, let’s not try to normalize this. Additionally, if you are reaching out to multiple teams to reschedule you have to know that this information is going to get out. Don’t blame this on social media, or media, this is 100% a complete f*ck up by Moos, Frost, and the entire athletic department.Busguy2010 wrote: Fri Mar 12, 2021 3:44 pm Makes me feel like this was just part of the decision making process that happens every year, month, week, day, hour.. Re: Nebraska Football 2021-
Hey all I'm saying is it might have been at the bottom of a long list of other boring solutions ahead of it. The fact that they didn't choose to cancel on Oklahoma makes this a complete non-story. Without social media, this wouldn't have gotten out before the real story came out, and as recently as 3,4,5 years ago the thought may have never left an 8x8 office and nobody would have had a single thing to say about it. People were overreacting to an incomplete story and that's all it is.

Oklahoma is the reported suspected source of the leak. They were disgusted that we were trying to back out of a contract with them so they leaked it out to show the rest of the world how shady the Huskers are these days.

This wasn’t leaked by social media, this was reported by a national college football writer who had multiple sources. Nebraska only changed course when they got blasted, deservedly so, by everyone.Busguy2010 wrote: Fri Mar 12, 2021 6:37 pm Hey all I'm saying is it might have been at the bottom of a long list of other boring solutions ahead of it. Via Twitter...By a questionable writer, via questionable sources... All I'm saying is take breaking news with a grain of salt. There were some wild reactions out there.Linkin5 wrote: Fri Mar 12, 2021 8:36 pm This wasn’t leaked by social media, this was reported by a national college football writer who had multiple sources.
Bottom line is they weren't "trying to get out" of playing Oklahoma, as the original tweet stated, they were discussing options, and the game was never off. The game is on, now lets go back to our basements. Like I said, without social media, this likely wouldn't have been a story.

Questionable writer? You may not like him but he’s not someone that reports false stuff. He’s also from Oklahoma so he has good sources, and he verified with the MAC schools and Old Dominion.Busguy2010 wrote: Fri Mar 12, 2021 9:23 pmVia Twitter...By a questionable writer, via questionable sources... Nebraska was trying to get Oklahoma off the schedule because they want to make a bowl game, nothing more nothing less.
