I simply think JP has been bitten by bad karma since he bailed on CU after His freshman season..

But again, at least he got paid :lafcry: ...

Four Omaha high school basketball standouts played each other in G League game
For Grand Rapids, Tre'Shawn Thurman had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Tra-Deon Hollins had four points, 11 assists and seven rebounds — both of them are Omaha Central grads. Former Creighton standout and Benson grad Khyri Thomas added seven points and two steals for the Drive.

Justin Patton, a former Bluejay and Omaha North graduate, had 11 points and two blocked shots for Wisconsin.

Justin Patton signs with Detroit Pistons, joining former Creighton teammate Khyri Thomas

Patton did appear to be finding a rhythm this past winter, though. He scored 45 points in a G League game in January.

From the W-H-

“The Los Angeles Clippers announced Tuesday that they have waived former Creighton center Justin Patton after adding him in a multiteam trade last week.

Patton, a 7-footer from Omaha, had been on the Detroit Pistons’ roster since the summer.

Patton has played in nine NBA games since being drafted at No. 16 overall in 2017.”..

The article also references Omahan Khyri Thomas (Taz) was waived as well.. What could have been had these guys decided to play out their college careers at Creighton and not bailed to the NBA early.. But I know, especially in the case of JP, at least he got paid :lafcry: ..

These guys are still young and they both have skills needed at their respective positions that are in demand in the league. Big issues with both have been injuries. If they can stay healthy, I can see them joining rosters again in the next couple years.

I am well aware of the history of Taz and JP as I am a Creighton Bluejay fan..

JP was not ready for the NBA when he jumped ship after his freshman year at CU- both physically and mentally.. Then promptly got injured. And has been injury prone since. I’ve always contended he needed as least another year of college competition to develop his game before jumping to the NBA. But the argument that’s always been presented back to me is- “he can’t turn down the $5 million; he needs to get paid”.. I get that. I really do. But, he should get paid to play the game of NBA basketball and to that, he’s played in a grand total of 9 NBA games in his 3 seasons- an average of about 3 games per season. From a business standpoint, that’s not a sound return for a $5 million dollar investment. When Minnesota drafted him, they rolled the dice and drafted potential. The jury is still out on if he can actually, consistently play in the NBA.. Add to that mix of JP being injury prone- also getting bounced around the league- is an additional indicator of doubt. But hey, at least he got paid..

On Taz, he was more NBA ready and at least played through his junior year at CU. To a much lesser extent “got paid”, but has also been hit with the injury bug and is also now bouncing around the league..

In any case, going into the 2017-18 college basketball season, the Jays could have been a Big East juggernaut with both JP and Taz playing together another year. But opportunity and the allure of $$ robbed us of that possibility..

Ty-Shon Alexander is the latest Jay that left early (he was a junior last year) to dip his toes into NBA eligibility.. then never got drafted..

As I Jays fan, I wish all these guys well..but leaving early to “get paid” has not been a lucky 🍀 career decision for them at present..

But again, ad nauseam, especially in the case of JP- at least he got paid :lafcry: ...

I came across this article on the Ringer. It talks about three draft picks that are still trying to make it back to the NBA, including Justin Patton. It's a good update on Patton. I am still cheering him on to make it back to the NBA.

Getting to the NBA Is Hard, but Getting Back May Be Even Harder

Nice to read about Justin...I was wondering where he has been lately. Crazy to think he is only 23.

Rockets' Justin Patton: Joins Rockets on two-way pact
Patton signed a two-way deal with Houston on Friday, Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle reports.

The 23-year-old was playing in the G League bubble with the Westchester Knicks, but he should now shift over to the Rockets' affiliate, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. Patton exclusively played in the G League in 2020 and averaged 12.0 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.6 assists. According to Mark Berman of Fox 26 Houston, the Rockets recalled Patton from the G League when announcing the signing Friday.

Rockets signee Justin Patton begins crash course
Looking for center help with Christian Wood out, the Rockets on Friday signed Justin Patton to a two-way contract and called him up from the G League in time for Friday’s practice.

Patton, 6-11, has been playing for the Westchester Knicks in the G League, averaging 8.3 points and 6.3 rebounds in 23.8 minutes per game in three games this season. Patton has averaged 11.8 points, 6.4 rebounds, 2.2 assists and two blocks in 83 career games in the G League.

Patton arrived at Toyota Center about an hour before Friday’s practice, allowing almost no time to familiarize himself with the Rockets’ system before the workout.

“He was good in practice today,” Rockets coach Stephen Silas said. “He is really a big guy and moves well on the floor. He rolls in pick-and-roll. He can pop a little bit. He’s excited to be here. A lot of it has to do with having an opportunity to play here. I’m sure a lot of it has to do with getting out of the … G League bubble.

He is long, talented. Defensively, he was good today as far as his help. Offensively, he picked things up so quickly, quicker than I ever thought he would.”

Patton was given video to study with plans to go over things again with Silas on Saturday before practice.

The Chicago Bulls made Patton, 23, the 16th pick of the 2017 NBA Draft out of Creighton as part of the trade that night that sent him with Jimmy Butler to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Patton played just nine games with the Timberwolves, 76ers and Thunder in his first three NBA seasons. His career had been sidetracked when he broke his left foot before his rookie season and his right foot during a workout prior to his second NBA start.

New Rockets big Justin Patton strives to become elite roller, defender
Patton should make his debut with the Rockets as the backup to DeMarcus Cousins during Monday’s home game versus Chicago. Tipoff between the Bulls and Rockets is set for 7 p.m. from Toyota Center.

Good for Patton. The Rockets and DeMarcus Cousins split recently and Christian Wood is still out, so he should be able to fill the void and get some playing time. I wish him good luck and look forward to seeing back in the NBA.

Christian Wood is a good role-model/teammate for Patton. Little bit older, similar trajectory as in left college early, bounced around early (albeit JP did get drafted higher), worked hard, got playing time in the G-League that was sorely needed, didn't quite fit a couple places early, but then hit his stride. Seems like a better place for Patton, especially with the Rocket's apparent reclamation mindset (cf Wall, McLemore, Cousins etc).

I noticed he started tonight. He has averaged about 6 pts and 3 reb per game for his 4 games.
