College World Series - 2021

Post by ita »

Not really sports related and I hate to start this thread about this year's CWS on the economics, but incredibly pertinent to what we like to talk about: economic development. Goss has some interesting economic facts that resulted from his 2019 survey.

With College World Series back in action, Omaha can expect economic boost of nearly $90 million
Dirk Chatelain
Exactly how many fans will occupy the ballpark from June 19-30 is still undetermined, but if foot traffic is anything close to 2019, the local economy can prepare for a boost.

According to the latest study, released Tuesday, a fully operational CWS is worth about $88.3 million to Omaha.

The study, conducted by Creighton economics professor Ernie Goss and commissioned by CWS Inc., showed a major bump from the $63.7 million calculated in 2014, when Goss last compiled the numbers.

Ernie Goss is a shill. His gig in this town is and always has been to help the scammers and the wheelers and the dealers sell lines of total B.S to the public. What an insult to intelligent thinking to believe they are going to have a big money making College World Series in just 90 days. Shame on Ernie for all the lies and misrepresentations and total nonsense he has laid on us for years just so he could make a couple of bucks himself.

I would hope not to see such a busy CWS as it has been in recent years. If they've moved 88 million in recent years, then I would have to say no more than half of that would be appropriate for the times. I'm just concerned with the way people are scratching their arms about getting back out there and getting back to normal, that all this has 1918 flu pandemic written all over it.

Yes, an alternate baseball schedule has been discussed with a new start to the season changing too. Nothing is decided and those discussions had nothing to do with COVID and were happening before COVID impacted everything.

That's what I thought I heard, but I also thought Covid expedited that process. So I misunderstood. I felt surprised it was still in the normal slot.

1 month from now the College World Series will be up and running with as many people as they can lure down there. The calculation if any that the government used to suddenly open everything wide up is a dubious one at best. The promoters now have their work cut out for them convincing people to go down there during a pandemic. Meow er I mean count me out!

Yeah, I wouldn't go, but there are plenty of people who just aren't concerned about it anymore, or never were. Probably more than enough to fill out a normal CWS week.

I am all for getting back to normalcy, but I think we are rushing things a little too much. We shouldn't be going right to 100% capacity so soon.

I feel the same way. We should have the CWS definitely, but 100% capacity and acting like the virus isn't still out there is going to be a big |expletive| show. I'm feeling the same way about 100% capacity at Husker games this fall. It all just doesn't seem smart to throw all caution to the wind just because some people are vaccinated, has a bit of an eerie feeling to it, like a bad gut feeling.

Why not?

1. Anyone that wants to be completely vaccinated before the CWS can be, there is still time.
2. The vaccines are 95% Effective.
3. The other 5 % who have contracted the virus after being fully vaccinated have had no serious medical issues, most of which don't show any symptoms.

Not saying everyone can run out there an party like its 2019, but if you are vaccinated and don't live with high risk unvaccinated people, then why not?

I'm not saying everyone can or should attend, but I believe the people that shouldn't attend, should stay home even if its only 50%.

Why not open it up and let the chips fall where they may you ask. Easy answer is because it is a weak move. Opening wide up like the country is right now is a punk move. We have been trying to get rid of the virus for 13 or 14 months and finally we have the virus staggering and leaning against the ropes and now we are going to back off? You do not back off you double down and go full throttle until the deal is closed. You never disrespect a tough opponent by backing off and letting them have a chance to get back in the game. Only fools and losers back off.

Re: College World Series - 2021

I was waiting for someone to say something I could ride the coat tails of. Couldn't quite figure out how to put my thoughts into words.

Something unexpected could happen. Aren't there variants out there now that reduce vaccine efficacy? Or what if there ends up being some variant or some unknown, yet to mutate variant that has been waiting for us to finally gather in mass again. It seems totally plausible. The other thing is it would be totally tragic if we were not to learn from what happened with the 1918 pandemic. Then on the 95% efficacy, yeah, that's high. But to compare it to another thing that was a done deal was Super Bowl 51 when the Falcons were up 28-3 and they had a 99% chance to win (I know). Among probably a vast array of things we thought were in the bag. The virus is still out there. It just goes against my survival instinct to just boom, open up like we are. How many times have people emerged after a tornado, only to be greeted by another tornado? I think it would be smart to take things gradually. But, here we are.

I for one, at least will be taking small steps over the next few months. My workplaces will no longer require me to wear a mask at work after Monday. Hy-Vee doesn't require one, Family Fare took down their mask sign, etc. But I still have to get through my box of masks, which will take a couple weeks... At that point, I'll decide if I open another one. I'll see what other people are doing, what other workplaces are doing etc. BUT, that won't change my shopping and other habits. I'm not going to any crowded places any time soon and will continue to shop during off-times and generally not go many places. Especially if everyone is ditching their masks.

I know I'm vaccinated, and I should be good to go, but I am a skeptic. Never was the one to dive in the deep end my first time. It will be interesting to see how people take their own steps. Glad I got my protection before the mandate expires, because if I still had several weeks to go, I'd be pretty mad about seeing everybody taking their foot off the gas pedal. For that reason alone, I will continue my strictest precautions for at least a few more weeks.

I'm fully immunized and would love to go to a game this year. I'm not really worried about myself as this point. I just think going right to 100% capacity when there is still so many unvaccinated is premature. I could see starting out at like 75% and if all goes well, continue to expand capacity of events through the summer.

I'm ready for things to go back to normal, but I don't want to see us rush it and make mistakes that worsen and prolong this any more than we have to.

Obvious big problem with that premise is that fighting the virus is not an individual problem. It is all our problems. How many kids or adults can we afford to get deathly sick or die from attending the CWS and it was still worth it? How many businesses have workers who still have not went back to the office and yet we have them ready to pack in 20,000 people at the CWS? This is not about me it is about the 40% of the people who have not got vaccinated that will be going to the CWS. It is about all the kids under 12 who have not got shots yet.

Good compromise would be full capacity but you have to show a vaccination card if you’re 18 or older to get in.

In the spirit of wishy-washiness, I can see both sides of this..

Having been a Covid survivor and now 100% fully vaccinated for well over a month, no one wants to get back to “normal” more than myself. In fact, since I’ve been fully vaccinated, I have ventured out and dined in 3 times. The other day, I even walked into a HyVee real quick to grab some beer- maskless for the first time in I can’t remember. It felt liberating..as goofy as that probably sounds..(Only did that once though, lol)..

But I also understand the point of “pumping the brakes” because I also don’t believe we’re to the point where we can throw caution to the wind either..

In the end, I think it’s a personal decision whether one feels safe enough to attend the CWS this year or not..Same thing with getting vaccinated or not (you SHOULD. But that’s not my call). The CDC sure threw us a curveball a couple weeks back when they stated fully vaccinated folks didn’t need to wear a mask indoors at the brick and mortar..then the dominoes started to fall quickly. Omaha’s mask mandate will expire in a couple of days and most all of the big box retailers have dropped their mask mandates for the fully vaccinated..

I’m to the point today, where I feel I’ve done my due diligence and am not worried for myself..but am worried about others walking around not vaccinated. We need to find the sweet spot..and we’re not quite there..

For the record, I’m not attending any CWS games this year..for me, it doesn’t feel right..yet...

I had my J&J shot the first week of March. I still carry my masks in the car and grab one as I head into a store. I have never had a problem wearing one- I see it as my responsibility.

That brings up a problem were going to have concerning vaccination cards. They don't exist! The cards we have right now could be easily duplicated with a scanner and a printer. Next time around when we all go in for our Covid-19 booster shots maybe they will have a little more official documentation system in place and will be able to create legit vaccination cards. We are going to need legit verifiable methods to see who is vaccinated and we just have not got that done yet. To make this work at the CWS they would need bar code scanners or cell phone scanners at the gate that could electronically scan peoples vaccination cards. Again we would need those legit cards first.

Well they almost made it through the CWS without a Covid breakout. Almost. North Carolina had 4 players test positive today and their starting pitcher was not able to play. The game started an hour late and they lost 3-1 and play Vanderbilt again Saturday for an elimination game. I don't see how things are going to be much better for North Carolina on Saturday so yeah the Covid has officially affected the CWS big time. Why those players have not been vaccinated yet defies logic. They should not of even been allowed to come here if they were not vaccinated. I did not look up the stats but a guy I know in North Carolina was just telling me this week that less then 40% of the people in North Carolina have been vaccinated. Seems like if that team has been here 7 or 8 days now that the players most likely have caught the Covid here.

They don't show it in the media but when I drive on the highway and look over at the stadium during CWS games I see whole upper sections with hardly anyone in them. But my eyes are lying to me maybe.

Vanderbilt-NC State College World Series game ruled no-contest due to COVID-19 protocols

“The NCAA Division I Baseball Committee has declared the Vanderbilt-NC State Men’s College World Series game scheduled for Saturday, June 26 at 1 p.m. Central time a no-contest because of COVID-19 protocols. This decision was made based on the recommendation of the Championship Medical Team and the Douglas County Health Department. As a result, Vanderbilt will advance to the CWS Finals. The NCAA and the committee regret that NC State’s student-athletes and coaching staff will not be able to continue in the championship in which they earned the right to participate. Because of privacy issues, we cannot provide further details.”

You knew this was coming. Our crazy Governor was insulting the NCAA today saying they should of never threw North Carolina out of the College World Series for having players infected with the Covid. You better believe that there will come a time when Omaha and Nebraska will pay dearly for the never ending insults and accusations levied against the NCAA by our Governor and Frost and Moos and the like. The NCAA and the BIG10 are not going to forget the constant B.S. coming out of Nebraska.

I thought it was some pretty big BS to call it a no contest. Mostly cause I am sick of listening to the Vanderbilt whistler. But equally cause could you imagine making it that far and just having to win one game to get into the championship? And then, just a no contest... I have been all out COVID precautionary since the start, but I feel like by now, most everyone who wants to be vaccinated has been, and most of the people that haven't, have either had it, or didn't give a |expletive| from the start, and we need to get on with it. And we don't even know if the positive tests came from vaccinated or unvaccinated players, and we don't even know if there's any unvaccinated staff or players on any of the teams. I'm almost certain a vast majority of people are either vaccinated or have had it, so I thought the no contest was total BS.

As with all things Covid the truth and honesty and transparency are scarce and hard to find. Of course with this outbreak as always they are pulling the "Hippa Card" to hide their lies and misrepresentations behind. What we know is that if a player had been vaccinated then they were not subject to testing unless a breakout occurred. If all North Carolina players had been vaccinated then they would not have been subject to testing. Only non vaccinated players were tested and that was every other day. The first positive test came Thursday. They then tested that guys roommate on Friday along with two other players that had been in close contact and they all 3 tested positive. At that point the story gets a little foggy. It appears that the NCAA and North Carolina went back and forth and eventually the NCAA agreed to let any North Carolina players that had been vaccinated play Friday. Of the 27 players on the team only 13 had been vaccinated! North Carolina lost the game Friday and as soon as the game was over the NCAA then told them they were going to test all the players on the team right away. It turns out a few more players were positive including 4 players that were supposed to be vaccinated. At that time North Carolina was told they were kicked out.

We had an outbreak and it was simply swept under the rug. No contact tracing no investigation no nothing. No warnings to the public. The rule of the day is screw caution and cross your fingers and hope for the best. The only governing authority that did the responsible thing was the NCAA. Either the NCAA threw the Douglas County Health Department under the bus or the Health Department threw the NCAA under the bus. News reports went out all over the country stating the decision was a joint decision between the Health Board and the NCAA. When asked in numerous interviews about this the Douglas County Health Board has denied having anything to do with ejecting North Carolina. It is clearly obvious the NCAA is telling the truth and the Health Department is lying out of fear that our Gov and his friends will come looking for their heads if they find out the truth.

College World Series nears new attendance record
The 2021 series has had an average of 22,396 per game through Monday's game, the highest since 2013. Through 14 sessions, that brings the total to 313,537.

With the CWS championship series going to a third game, the total attendance record is likely to be broken. That number, 357,646, was set in 2017 over 16 games.

The only other year to bring in higher average attendance was 2013, when an average of 24,392 flooded the park.

“New attendance records set
Three attendance records fell Wednesday night.

The 24,052 at the game set a record for a Game 3 final. That boosted the three-game final series attendance to 72,226 and the overall CWS attendance to 361,711, both Series records.”..

The stadium looked packed on TV, after last year’s cancellation this years CWS seemed a little more special. I think people really missed it, it’s such a big part of Omaha. We also had pretty good weather except for a few rain delays and it wasn’t as hot as some years. Overall a fantastic CWS.

I think having a team like Mississippi State in the Finals helped a lot. I know there have been years in the past that tickets for the finals were easy to get because there were only 18,000 or so there on a weeknight. This year was much different with the diehard fanbase.

I know there have been years in the past that tickets for the finals were easy to get because there were only 18,000 or so there on a weeknight. This year was much different with the diehard fanbase.
Your assessment here is spot on. Mississippi State fans were the difference maker. I went to Tuesday and Wednesay night's game and they just were everywhere. Not sure what the stadium looks like without them.

Word is that the Mississippi State fans brought some of that racism their state is infamous for along with them. On Monday night when Vanderbilt had the game in the bag by numerous runs some Mississippi St fans stated yelling out N-bombs repeatedly so loud that everyone in the stadium including ESPN announcers could hear them. From what I heard nobody was doing anything about it either.

We held the Series and a bunch of people made a bunch of money I guess so that is all good....... but to say the series went good or anything close to normal is a stretch. Normal or good is not having a champion winning by default because the other team got thrown out of the tournament because they had the Covid. Normal or good is not having one teams fans sitting in the stadium hurling racist insults at the other teams players and parents in the stands.

Good article in The Daily Beast- https://www.thedailybeast.com/americas- ... rld-series

There sure are a lot of sports teams called the Bulldogs. Mississippi State is one of them.
