Power still out Sunday morning. This is the first house I’ve lived in with above ground power lines. Even growing up as a kid we always had buried lines. My next house I will make an effort to avoid above ground power lines. Buried lines is the way to go especially in areas like Nebraska prone to high winds. From my own personal experiences buried lines outages are much less frequent.

Hopefully 🙏 I will get power back sometime today. I think living in the plains states you can expect a storm like this at least once every 10-15 years and sometimes more.

From today’s W-H storm update story-

“ Based on available OPPD records, the 188,000 customers who lost power over the weekend were the most to do so because of a storm in decades, according to an OPPD spokeswoman — and perhaps the most ever.

The number of affected customers topped the toll of a June 27, 2008, storm that left 156,000 without electricity, according to Laura King-Homan, a communications specialist for OPPD.

And as of 4:50 p.m. Sunday, nearly 47,000 Omaha Public Power District customers remained without power — more than 40 hours after the storm downed trees and power lines, and forced those who rely on electricity for medical care to seek shelter elsewhere.

The bulk of those outages were in Douglas County, according to the Omaha Public Power District's outage map.”..

The complete W-H story link:

https://omaha.com/news/local/hurricane- ... -top-story

Like I mentioned in an earlier post, that June 27th 2008 storm knocked power out at my residence for 4 days. It was a miserable experience to say the least…

I think this will go into the weather events to remember thread. It was a major surprise too. I don't think anyone expected anything near that powerful. Starting our 60th hour with no electricity, and I don't hold a lot of hope for it to come back today. I went out last night and all over NW Omaha, even traffic signals were still out, even at the major intersection of 108th & Maple. Have to think their priority is getting power back to infrastructure, not homes. People in my neighborhood still working on cutting down trees.

I'm just thankful it hasn't been miserably hot the last few days, and can manage a reasonable overnight temperature in the house.

This storm, the 2008 storm, and the October snow storm in 1997 are the major outage events that I remember in my life . every one between has been a minor inconvenience. We could call that storm an approximately once-a-decade event.

Out here in Millard we almost never loose our electricity but back in the 80's when I lived in Benson I had a few painful little stints without electricity.

I remember coming to the stark conclusion after a day or two with no power that any house without electricity is not a house anymore! A house without electricity is a shack!

It is times like this that a small gas powered generator is well worth the 500 bucks. I know a couple of people who have what they call Jackerys! Jackerys can be charged with portable solar panels and have lots of cool features.

Check out their website- https://www.jackery.com/?gclid=Cj0KCQjw ... cREALw_wcB

Not a generator for me. My immediate neighbor is running one 24/7 right now and it is extremely disruptive. But it does make me think about solar panels on the roof. Aside from throwing most of the stuff in the fridge and freezer out, this outage hasn't been that bad. I still have my smart phone, car charger, running water, and can go places, candles and lanterns at night. Not the most comfortable, but not like oh I'm gonna die if the power doesn't come back soon.

My power came back on Sunday evening after being off for close to 44 hrs. I am thinking about purchasing a generator. I agree the noise they make is a little annoying. This storm, the
2008 windstorm and the October snowstorm will be remembered as historic storms, we got lucky last year with the Derecho it didn’t get real bad till it got east of us.

I'm totally at my breaking point with that generator. Between it being 84 degrees in my house with no option but to keep the windows open at night and not being able to sleep because of that noise, I want to shoot it out. Like if we could all agree to be equally miserable, that'd be great. Instead, my neighbors appear to be doing fine, while projecting greater misery to probably 10 other households. Inconsiderate |expletive|.

If it is for camping or something like that I look at noise levels. If it is for emergency power during an outage noise is way down my list of considerations.

Yeah but what is the emergency really? I mean, I've been without power going on 4 days, lost everything frozen or refrigerated, no a/c, no entertainment, etc. Like unless you need refrigeration for some sort of life sustaining medicine, a gas generator seems like a dickhead move to me.

I know people with those Honda 2-3KW generators for camping/RV applications and they are ultra quiet and sip fuel.

If all you need is to do is run a refrigerator and maybe chargers for phones or rechargeable lighting, just get one of those Honda clone Predator 3500 generators from Hazard Freight. Heck, you can probably buy three of them for the price of one Honda. Use one for the refrigerator, another for maybe some small appliances, and have a third as a spare, lol.

I got this battery for camping and its great for when the power goes out too... It runs my CPAP machine and charges our phone for 3 days.

Man this is getting to be easily the worst power outage I've ever experienced. I don't remember how long the power outage was in 1997, but I'd have to guess we're right up there by now. Its been 111 hours now. And I understand it appears I'm in the worst affected area, so it may not come back today, or tomorrow, or the next day. |expletive| miserable. But hey, like I said, I'm so thankful it isn't 95 degrees and sunny, I have running water, and a way to charge my phone. And another positive is i did good at Big Red last night. I dont gamble a lot, but there's nothing to do after work. Almost don't even want to go home.

Also, I hope any storms that happen today are not severe and do not slow down progress on the power work.

Anyone who still doesn’t have power now truly has it tough. Mine came on Sunday about 6pm and I know I was starting to get frustrated. I am going to look at purchasing a generator. I at least want to run my fridge.

Here at my house we have had 3 memorable storms the last 3 years. May of 2019 was a very bad hail storm, last year the Derecho which I admit wasn’t bad in Omaha but got to be horrible by the time it reached parts of Iowa and this storm. Which all I can say is during its peak, which I think only lasted a few minutes I was waiting for the windows to start breaking. That seemed like the next thing that was going to happen.

I was also waiting for windows to break. It's hard to remember, but I think the storm was just arriving at 12:15 and it wasn't really calming down until 1:15. I think the sirens came on as late as 12:45, and that was well after the storm was well under way. In all, I'd have to say the severe criteria winds lasted maybe 12:30 to 1:00am. Still no power, so assuming it doesn't come on in the next two hours, that'd make it 120 hours, or 5 full days. Miserable, but it could be worse. And they're talking more potential severe storms tonight. I just hope it's fairly benign.

We had two severe thunderstorms roll through in one day on Saturday. If we have one tonight, that'd be three in 5 days, vs like three in the last three years. And again, all the main storms have been happening at night, which is total BS.

I'm part of approximately 5,000 people still without power, and it looks like north central Omaha, North Omaha, Benson, Dundee are the worst off. Pretty much stand at Westroads and look north and east and there are all your sorry bastards. Worst part about it is people across the street from me have had electricity for two days now.

Sorry to hear your power is still off. I think the loss of power is by far the worst result from this early July 10 2021 storm, more so than the overall number of trees affected. I drove into Dundee this week and was surprised by how many trees are unscathed or mostly intact. There are a few places where it was bad, but not as bad as I thought it might be.

I was around for the 1997 “October Surprise” snow storm and I think back then almost every tree was affected in some way. This is mainly because we had an abnormally warm fall and most of the trees still had their leaves and more branches couldn’t handle the added weight from the heavy snow. This July 10 2021 storm had much higher winds, although it seems many more trees were able to handle it compared to the 1997 storm. Maybe the larger, taller trees were the most likely ones to be damaged by this storm and hit more power lines. The high winds also were apparently higher in random areas around the city.

We were lucky and only lost power until about 3:00 p.m. Sunday. I’m also thinking about getting a quiet generator to power the refrigerator, freezer, and sump pump. It would be great to have a whole-house generator that would automatically kick-on after an outage, but the cost would be hard to justify.

^ like you said, a whole house generator would be hard to justify. An outage of this magnitude rarely happens. So I wondered if puting solar panels on the roof would be cost effective, or effective in general. If you get a lot of sun, which I do, you have to think you can generate enough energy to offset during normal conditions, and at least generate enough to run a refrigerator/freezer, maybe a light or two, or be able to charge a phone during an outage. Just dont know how much that stuff runs. If it's in the 5,000 range for maybe a 200 sf area, then I'd sign up tomorrow.

From the NWS Omaha Twitter page-

“Funnel clouds continue to be observed across parts of southeast Nebraska into far southwest Iowa. They will remain possible through early evening. Again, they are very unlikely to reach the ground, but if you see one approaching the ground, seek shelter and let us know!”…

Long-range models are showing a pretty lengthy heatwave in the northern plains with near or above 100 degrees expected for multiple days.

It's unlikely to actually happen but the 06 GFS way out in "la la land" is even showing a high temp of 116 in the Lincoln/Omaha area (keep in mind, this doesn't include the humidity) - which obviously would shatter records. I wouldn't expect it to actually get that hot but regardless, looking like a week or 2 of miserable hot weather starting next week...

Here is the crazy high temp being shown for around July 29th (again, unlikely to actually happen but still pretty crazy it's even showing that)

True - though to clarify, I mean “unlikely” from more of a forecasting point of view. The 06z and 18z runs of the GFS tend to be the least reliable (especially 200+ hours out) with the 12z and 00z often better/more accurate. This image was from the 06z GFS. Chances of extremely high temps like 110+ will probably be highest in western/central NE since terrain in those areas tend to be more sand based and consequently things can get hotter, faster. Only time will tell though..

Assuming that was the most liberal of forecasts. Unlikely to end up that way, but I wouldn't be surprised with temps around or above 100 for all of not next week, but the week after, so the 14 day forecast.

Pretty cool how you can clearly see the outflow boundaries. They ought to converge here soon. One from the storms to our north and one from the storms to our south, with the popup thunderstorms forming on the boundary from the north.

Get ready for the true “dog days of summer”..for the next 7 days through 7/29/21- highs in the upper 90’s to 100’s with dangerous heat indexes..

Stay cool, safe and keep hydrated..for perspective, remember the -23 temperature in Omaha 5 months ago in February…

Ciao..LiO…Peace
Go Cowboys!
