Actually, the last time I was in Oscar's, I thought they had slipped, and others in the party thought the same. It may (hopefully) have been a one-off bad night since I have not heard others say the same about it. This was some time ago, and hopefully they will be opening back up, as we do need the independent food and drink purveyors. Oscar's was (and hopefully is) a rose among the thorns.

Hey! Sex sells! Always has, always will. Ask anyone who's ever worked in an ad agency.

(LOL, ribs and a bear?) :) :) :) :)

Those places don't, however, seem to have that much as far as longevity.
Ribs & a bear. Weird autocorrect.

When I was in the hotel business we had bars at the hotels. One was a truckers bar & we had three pretty busty bartenders (yes, women). One night we were closing and all three had worked & they were standing next to each other. One of them said "We sure do cast a big shadow." Yeah, sex sells.

Signs have been installed recently. This will now be a Tanners Sports Bar & Grill. I have never ate a Tanners before. I went to their web site and it said they serve chicken lips. That can't be right. I won't eat at place messing with chicken lips.

I don’t know about “lips”, but Tanner’s serves up some pretty tasty chicken wings..

Their bar food overall is pretty solid...

I've always heard great things about Tanner's food, but unfortunately the only location I've tried is their 192nd & Q location where the service is consistently horrible (as their ratings generally reflect).

Living in Gretna I drive by this location to go to DJ's Dugout. Every time I have tried to like Tanners it has disappointed. The service is poor, but I do not think the food is that good either.

Some commenting on service and food should try again. In late 2019 there were new owners at 119th and Pacific and 156th and Maple. They have done renovations to both locations.

I’ll take Tanner’s food over DJ’s every time, atmosphere is better at DJs though.

There was a time, 15-20 years back, DJ’s had pretty good wings..and a bunch of different heat levels..

It’s been awhile since I’ve eaten there however...

I recall years ago, the Bonanza where Dodge & Rose Blumkin Dr is now, had a fire a few days before they were closing to make way for the new road. I believe the Fire Marshall ruled it suspicious.

Their Facebook post downplays it:

"We had a small fire at our 173rd and Center location. Good News: Everyone is ok and safe! Thx you for all the words of encouragement. The staff from Tanner's Bar & Grill say thank you."

Capri (inside Tanner's at 173rd & Center)

Post by ChadJK »

The Tanner's at 173rd & Center has an Italian restaurant operating inside of it named Capri. Sort of a restaurant within the restaurant. They walled off the back section of Tanner's and it operates in there.

Oh, that must be the restaurant concept one of the Tanner's partners was referring to when he mentioned opening two Julio's restaurants and an Italian concept near 173rd and Center.

Wonder if that's a temp location to try and gauge interest, or until a full-blown restaurant opens? I can't see that being a permanent home but I haven't been inside to see how it works.

From the World Herald: "He (Brett Clure) is part-owner of four Tanner’s locations: two in Omaha, one in Lincoln and one in Wisconsin; and four Tavern 180 outlets: one in Omaha and the others elsewhere in the Midwest. He also plans to open a new Italian restaurant, Capri, sometime this year at 173rd Street and West Center Road."

That is what was stated when they closed but I have not heard or seen any more on it since closer.

on a side note there is something about this statement that makes you go HMMMMMM Capri closed because it was a success

Makes plenty of sense when Tanners had publicly stated that this space was intended as a "test kitchen" for future concepts...

Can be spun that way, but if it is/was a Sucess, and there is nothing there to take its place, why close up shop before the new location is ready to go? If they had any momentum, they risk losing it.

I agree - why close if it was supposedly doing well (as well as it could given the space/shared kitchen/shared restrooms, etc)?

I did just visit their page and it says "temporarily closed" and "look for our new location soon". Of course this guarantees nothing, but who knows.

I don't think Tanner's was ever able to compete with Oscar's. We stopped into this location a few times and it was always disappointingly empty inside. Also, they really needed to do something with the cobweb problem in the rafters as it was beginning to look like a haunted house.

I didn't realize there was a change in ownership. What year was that?

I do like the concept (and taste) of their Chicken Lips (essentially, chicken tenders sauced like you would buffalo wings).

So, a 18+ months later and Tanner's never did open their Capri concept as a standalone restaurant. The website no longer works either.

Wow - kinda forgot about it, TBH. It's disappointing (but shouldn't be surprising) as a customer to dine at a place and be told by employees (including likely ownership) that they're planning on building a dedicated space, only to see if never happen.

Could it have been their real intention to open a restaurant on its own? Perhaps - I mean they talked up the small Capri spot in the back of Tanner's like it was busier than they could handle. But maybe it was all a facade. Plus, coming from them, they obviously didn't have a great track record of keeping Tanners' restaurants open, either.

Regardless, I still would like to track down the recipes from Grisanti's and open my own place... or, just make the food for my family. I could go in there and order salad, their tortellini and tomato soup and bread/sauce and never order an entree. I bring this up because the bread at Capri was a bit like what I remember. I tried to find the recipes by contacting family connected to Grisanti's owners and they said the recipes were from another family and they didn't have access to them.
