Connecting the Dots
On a sunny day in mid-November, palpable energy filled the air as Omaha Metro Transit (Omaha Metro) staff, 50 volunteer community transit ambassadors and transit enthusiasts alike (safely) gathered in downtown Omaha, Neb., along the Dodge Street Corridor to celebrate the long-awaited arrival of a brand-new transit service: Omaha Rapid Bus Transit (ORBT), the region’s first introduction to bus rapid transit (BRT) and one of the most significant transit investments for the area in decades.

“We had a lot of riders that hadn’t been on transit before at all, or hadn’t been on in years,” recalled Jason Rose, communications and community relations manager, Omaha Metro. “People were just amazed [by] the system.”

The service launch followed a prerecorded virtual ribbon cutting ceremony that featured videos of key project stakeholders, along with an in-person media-only ribbon cutting followed by a media-only first ride. While opening day went as virtual as possible, Omaha Metro still encouraged people to come out and see ORBT for themselves (while practicing CDC and local safety guidelines).
This was actually the lead article in this publication's April/May magazine.

Swim trials on NBC tonight and all this week at 7pm. They showed an aerial shot of the Omaha skyline for about 5 seconds at the beginning of the program. Great National exposure for Omaha.

Omaha downtown aerial shot on NBC TV 6-19-21. Thank God for Woodmen and FNB or our skyline would look pretty bland. FNB looks particularly impressive. Downtown is still Omaha’s image center not West Farms or AK Village. It’s events like this that having a strong DT is important.

Not quite sure where to put this, but the R211, the newest model of NYC subway train, is being built at the Kawasaki plant in Lincoln and getting a bunch of press right now as “built in Nebraska”

Perhaps I'm salty that we can build these, but the region is so anti-mass transit.

Speaking of which. I saw Aksarben got a new 5G tower, placed right in the middle of the sidewalk. I'm hoping to learn more on how this was allowed. We wouldn't let that happen to a street, but a sidewalk is fine?

Why do we allow sidewalks to be closed down so much longer than streets?!?!

I don’t think we are anti-mass transit. We are anti-pointlessness and anti-narrow service zones. ORBT may not get the riders, but it’s well liked and supported.

A big difference between Omaha and where I live in metro Detroit is hills. I rode my bike from my house near 11 Mile and Greenfield in Oak Park to downtown without going up or down a hill, thought possibly a tiny grade change. When we lived near 144th and Dodge the trip to downtown by the river would have meant dealing with some pretty steep hills.

In addition, and possibly due to the lack of hills, from the time we moved here I noticed that it looked like a lot more people rode bikes here. Even in rain or winter there they are. And this is Motown, we put the world on wheels as they say. There are a ton of bike lanes both in the city and suburbs.

I was in Copenhagen where bikes are the dominant form of personal transport. The peak altitude of that city is like 2meters above sea level. Manhattan is the same. If you have a city that is truly flat and especially one that is effectively at sea level, you can ride a 3-speed bike to work. Try doing that in Omaha if you start at 120th and Pacific and have to get to Mutual.

Wasn't sure where to put this but this video came up on my feed on YouTube. It is from a channel called La Gringa Latina and is entirely in Spanish lol. But the English subtitles told me she was born and raised in Omaha. The video has almost 600K views so I would imagine this has had good exposure for Omaha to the Latino community.

Thanks for sharing. I kind of wish she showed some of the business districts in South O, but overall I liked it. Good exposure for sure. A lot more views than the skyline drone videos we all like!

Edit: I found another one where she does go to South 24th:

From More Equitable Transit to a “Carless City” in Omaha
Sandy Smith
Omaha Sets Sights on Making Itself “Virtually Carless”

Advocates for transit equity push to get transit authorities to emphasize better service to historically disadvantaged and underserved communities. Omaha, Nebraska’s largest city, doesn’t lack for such communities, and now the city’s transit authority is turning its attention to one of them.

But according to a WOWT news report, Omaha Metro Transit’s plan to improve bus service to the city’s heavily Black north side is just one small step on a much grander journey. The ultimate goal of this year’s MetroNEXT planning process: Putting Omaha on the road to becoming a city that’s “virtually carless.”

The pandemic year saw the debut of bus rapid transit in Omaha with the launch of the east-west Omaha Rapid Bus Transit (ORBT) line in November. The service, which replaced the city’s most heavily used bus route and connects downtown Omaha with two major shopping centers, two major hospitals and a university campus via the main east-west thoroughfare in the city, is currently free to use.

ORBT’s debut came as the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce was wrapping up its own year-long study of the region’s transportation future. Called ConnectGO, the chamber’s plan relied on a survey of Omaha-area residents to determine what the region’s transportation priorities should be.

The survey respondents said that the top two priorities should be developing a transportation strategy that considers all modes rather than just one (88 percent of respondents agreed or agreed strongly) and making equitable access to jobs, education and healthcare the guiding principle (86 percent). By comparison, reducing congestion came in last among the priorities, with only 51 percent agreeing that “congestion hurts my quality of life.” More respondents (61 percent) agreed that “reducing racial disparities in wealth should guide investment.”

And that brings us to North 24th Street, one of the main thoroughfares through Omaha’s overwhelmingly Black north side. Metro’s Route 24 bus is one of the city’s busiest lines, and Metro Communications Manager Jason Rose told WOWT that the agency intends to invest in improving the quality of service in its corridor: “There’s so many pockets of people that we’re hoping to better connect by making an investment in 24th Street.” Rose went on to say that public feedback would be key in determining what kinds of investments to make.

Metro Transit has identified 24th Street, which serves both the city’s Black north side and Latino south side, as its priority corridor for the near term, which means it will be first in line for transit improvements.
And in case you all missed it, here is the WOWT article Next City is quoting: Metro Transit focusing on North Omaha for new, enhanced service

‘Why Omaha?’: DHS bets on Nebraska as the future of terrorism research
Hannah Allam
OMAHA — One humid afternoon this summer, the Kiwanis Club of Greater Omaha got an unusually high turnout for its weekly meeting at a sports bar in a local strip mall.

The topic was violent extremism, and the gathering took place on the eve of the first hearing of the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. After a prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance, the club members settled in to learn about the scope of the threat — and, to their surprise, how Nebraska is now a hub in the government’s fight against it.

Their guest was Gina Ligon, 42, a terrorism researcher at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, who caused a ripple in the field last year when her team won a long-shot bid for a multimillion-dollar federal project. The result is the newly opened NCITE, the National Counterterrorism Innovation, Technology and Education Center, one of 10 specialized centers funded by the Department of Homeland Security to study urgent security concerns.

NCITE is the second in the Midwest, a dot in the middle of the map Ligon showed the audience. She told them it offends her when people ask, as they often do, “Why Omaha?”

“You don’t want another center on the coast,” Ligon said. “You want it right here.”
Really good exposure for Omaha and UNO.

Rethinking Resilience: Location Drivers in a Shifting Market Landscape
After a record economic expansion in the U.S., intermittent shutdowns caused by the COVID-19 pandemic continue to ripple through the economy. The effects of the shutdowns have fueled an uncertain future in the short term and recalibrated priorities of location strategies and the resulting real estate footprints. The COVID pandemic has amplified the need for companies to evaluate existing and new markets from fresh perspectives beyond the usual set of location drivers such as transportation costs, labor availability and cost, and taxes.

Our largest cities, which led the economic resurgence from the last recession, will always be uniquely positioned as vibrant centers of culture, talent and innovation. Despite current headwinds, that is unlikely to change in the long term. However, this analysis offers an introductory look at new considerations for a location strategy. These considerations won’t necessarily overlook the dense, dynamic “superstar” cities of the last decade. Instead, they highlight less heralded alternatives, which may provide their own advantages in the next decade.
...
The following analysis presents a case study for analyzing these location drivers. By evaluating U.S. counties across each topic, we can derive an applied example of the attributes that will be most valuable in meeting expected challenges. The resulting markets are not a one-size-fits-all solution for every business requirement, and many markets outside this analysis may be ideal locations for certain projects and priorities. The 11 counties below simply exhibit a representative mix of characteristics that will be prioritized in a rapidly shifting landscape.
Douglas County is one of the 11 counties that made the cut. The full report has some good data about each of the counties:

This might be bad though. As work from anywhere might mean that a huge portion of these people are trying to leave the cities for a beach, or mountain. Or secure a decent job before relocating to another city.

Agreed. I'd also caution anyone who dramatically wants to push for permanent WFH: The endgame of companies having the ability to have a job be done "anywhere" isn't "you get to sit in Omaha for your job based out of Chicago". It's "we're based out of Chicago and can now hire people in Croatia, Vietnam, etc.".

Partially agreed at least. International employees aren't all roses. The training and service abroad is often not of the same caliber. Sometimes that doesn't matter though. But even for cities like NY, finding an employee who needs 60% of the pay in Omaha, or Mountain Village Y might be very lucrative.

Not necessarily.. Omaha functions as a major metropolitan area, without much of the hassles that accompany most of them- like horrible gridlock, high crime, under built infrastructure, higher cost of living etc etc..

There is a reason why Omaha experienced robust 12% growth and added about 103,000 people to its metro population last decade..and the future diversity of job growth, especially in the medical tech arena, will ensure even more robust growth this decade as well..

Omaha is a great place to hang a shingle for anyone- no matter age, race, sexual orientation or marital status…

I moved to Omaha for a job in 2015, and I chose Omaha to look for jobs. For me, there was a strong tech sector, it felt more urban than much of the regions big cities (OKC, KC and Dallas were contenders I didn't choose for various reasons).

Other communities that I might have picked over Omaha (in more or less our region) are Minneapolis, Chicago, and Austin.

I forgot where I was going with that. But in short: Yes, we can't look at those numbers and say that this is a good or bad stat. But from my being in the tech community, I can see those stats as being possibly a negative indicator.

On the flip side, I know a lot of tech people who are also just happy now that they have adjusted to work from home. The threat of going back to the office is enough to consider a pay cut to continue the WFH lifestyle.

Our America - EQUITY REPORT OMAHA

According to this report, Omaha is in the bottom 20% when it comes to equality among the 100 cities the report looked at. This is bad and the city needs to work together to continue to address this issue. When you compare Omaha though to the other 100 cities, most scored poorly (we scored poorly on 19 of the 20 data points, but many cities scored only 1 or 2 data points better), so this isn't endemic exclusively to Omaha.

Taking a deeper dive into this report, to my count, 60 of the 100 metro areas measured scored basically the same as Omaha..so it’s not like Omaha’s at the bottom of the barrel alone here..Further, some of the ‘measurables” here I question..

Of course Omaha, or any metro, needs to become “better”..But I don’t necessarily buy its findings altogether as valid in reality..

Interesting find however…

I too find the measurables to be skewed to paint a certain negative picture, which in itself is divisive and disparaging, so I don't really get the point of the page. Especially when Omaha is actually a very diverse and welcoming city.

They probably seem skewed because the picture of racial equality and equity doesn’t look even remotely great in America. Omaha might have even seen less segregation at one point in time than it does in 2021, at least when it comes to measure like the school districts. I’m not trying to make a claim, i just look at the maps and numbers and hope Omaha challenges itself to do better.

Nebraska launches $10 million 'The Good Life is Calling' campaign to lure new residents
Marth Stoddard
LINCOLN — Gov. Pete Ricketts unveiled a $10 million marketing campaign Monday aimed at recruiting new talent to the state.

He said the national “The Good Life is Calling” campaign targets Nebraskans who have left the state and other people who may be looking for a change of pace and a better quality of life.

“Our state has welcoming communities, affordable homes and top-notch schools,” Ricketts said. “Nebraska is growing fast and creating plenty of great-paying jobs. For those looking for opportunity and a safer, friendlier place to put down roots, the Good Life is calling.”

The campaign, which expands on an existing website, was developed by Archrival, a Nebraska-based creative agency. It centers around a video showing 170 Nebraskans at work and play in a variety of locations across the state. Adam DeVine, an actor who grew up in Omaha, narrates.

Commercials will be placed in a variety of media in targeted markets. The focus will be on key cities within 500 miles of the state, including Minneapolis, Kansas City, Chicago and Denver. The spots will be tested in other places, including Silicon Valley and Austin, Texas.

Clint Runge, CEO and founder of Archrival, said the effort will also involve extensive digital and social media, including Nebraska influencers. He said the plan is to do an initial wave of marketing, then follow up with a second wave in the most promising places.

Thanks for sharing! I used to hoop with Clint Runge. He's a good, smart guy. Glad he has this opportunity to showcase his company's ability.

Sounds like one stupid big waste of money. What a bunch of idiots. I developed this rule of thumb back in my 20's and it still holds true 35 years later! Nobody that moves from Omaha that has even an ounce of success ever moves back. This is a fact. People move back here for basically 2 reasons only. First reason they come back is because they have failed where they are at and are crashing and burning back to Omaha to live with family. The 2nd reason they come back is to mooch off of Mom & Dad and maybe collect an inheritance. I have had more best friends move out of here then I care to remember. One thing I learned by my late 20's was that friends who move from here are not ever coming back and if they do it means their situation is not good.

Opinion as fact. Put another way, anecdotal evidence is not scientific evidence. I quickly thought of five friends that were successful after leaving Omaha and they moved back. One moved back because his in laws were getting older and his wife wanted to be near them. He's now a very successful director of a non profit. Another moved his whole company back to Omaha because he hated Los Angeles. And on and on. That's anecdotal as well. Neither of us presented scientific data.
Scientific data could be a poll with data points. It could be a study of those who graduated from UNL or UNO and moved away, with the respondents asked if they had an interest in moving back. I could cite other examples but in short that's my point.
Simply stating that one knows of no one who was successful away from Omaha and moved back is a canard. It's starting with a conclusion and then searching for proof of the conclusion.
So the opinion is that Omaha should just not waste time promoting itself? Yeah, that works so well in business that Omaha should give doing nothing a shot.

Omaha was just a category on Jeopardy. Apparently the contestants aren’t familiar with us. They only got 1 of the 5 right.
