Official- 2020 Omaha CSA 1 million+

Post by Omaha Cowboy »

Here’s the official Omaha 2020 metropolitan population number-

967,604 ranking 58th in the US- now we add Dodge County for Omaha’s CSA- drum roll please- 1,004,771!..

It’s official- we can now boast of a 1 million+ population CSA!!.. The Metropolitan area (MSA) is only 32,000 and change behind one mill!..

Here’s the W-H link which includes a county map of Nebraska- tap on the county, and you get their 2020 official US Census count-

https://omaha.com/news/local/omaha-post ... op-story-1

This is exactly what I mean when I say the annual estimates lowball Omaha’s MSA and CSA.. To growth :thumb:

This is what I posted on May 5th, 2021 just after the lowballed 2020 estimates came out-

“I believe these latest estimates to be pretty off in the lowball department for Omaha..

That said, I expect once the official 2020 US Census numbers are available this September, the Omaha CSA population to squeeze past the 1 million mark and the MSA number to be between 965,000-970,000..

If I’m wrong, pass the ketchup and I’ll eat a straw hat...

Well, for once I was dead on..and won’t be consuming any straw hats :thumb:

my swag wasn't too far off either. 963 and 997 respectively.
My old signature got too old. So old it was getting almost as old me as me. Yeah, it was up there in years.

What towns get included in the CSA that are excluded from the MSA? Just curious of the expanse between the two.

The Omaha Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) is 8 counties- Douglas, Sarpy, Cass, Washington and Saunders counties in Nebraska..and Pottawattamie, Mills and Harrison counties in Iowa- this accounts for the Omaha MSA population of 967,604..

The Omaha Combined Statistical Area (CSA) adds Dodge county in Nebraska (which includes the city of Fremont) to the 8 county MSA and this accounts for the Omaha CSA population of 1,004,771…

I was off in my estimates, and I am happy about it! The metro had stronger growth than estimated. The City of Omaha's growth can be attributed by the aggressive annexations over the last decase (thanks mayor!), but I liked that the article pointed out that urban population growth contributed to the boom as well. As a City, we are a stone's throw from half a million which we should hit fairly quickly this decade. Anyway, exciting numbers for the MSA and CSA. Now if we could only get an OMA-LNC CSA designation...

Some additional interesting data-

The Omaha MSA added 102,254 in population for an 11.8% growth rate between 2010 and 2020..

The population demographics of Omaha are changing too.. For the official 2020 census, the Omaha metropolitan has-

74,428 African Americans, 7.7%..
33,798 Asians, 3.5%..
111,481 Latinos, 11.5%..

The metro also counts more than 50,000 residents of 2 or more race..

To continued growth :thumb:

Certainly we can expect the MSA to cross 1mm and the city proper to cross 500k within the next 3-5 years.

Yeah, the increase is diversity is a plus for the City and Metro. It still bugs me how little the Iowa side has grown, but there are good things in Omaha's near term that can give a big boost to the population, primarily UNMC's project.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I found the Omaha metro population listed as 965,000 in 2010. I find it hard to believe that the metro only added 2,000 residents in the past decade. According to the World Herald article the metro is only at 967,000. Is that correct?

The 2010 Official US Census Omaha metropolitan population was- 865,350..

The 2020 Official US Census Omaha metropolitan population is now- 967,604..

Omaha grew by 11.8% from 2010 to 2020 and added 102,254 people..

The Omaha CSA has now officially passed the 1 million mark at 1,004,117…

The wikipedia article about the metro population is super off for some reason.

Interestingly enough, poking through the data a bit, it looks like the census bureau even underestimated a few much larger cities. Their counts for NYC were off by almost 500,000 people.

I thought I’d add the Lincoln metropolitan area numbers here too-

2010- Lincoln MSA population- 302,157..
2020- Lincoln MSA population- 340,217..

Lincoln added 38,060 to its MSA from 2010 to 2020 and grew at a 12.6% clip for the decade…

To add on to Lincoln- their MSA consists of 2 counties- Lancaster and Seward.. The Lincoln CSA adds Gage county which includes Beatrice..

The 2020 US Census official Lincoln CSA population is 361,921…

Since Bellevue is now technically larger than CB will it be the Omaha-Bellevue-Council Bluffs MSA?

Not sure the US Census in DC would acknowledge this and update our MSA name..They’re likely going with the most populous city in the MSA in each state..which in our case, is Nebraska and Iowa..but I’m not certain that’s the case.. Technically and in reality, based on the new official numbers, Bellevue is now larger than Council Bluffs..and based on growth rate trends, I don’t see that reversing. I actually see that gap widening between the 2 (as in Bellevue widening the gap)..

That said, I’d be on board for the “Omaha-Bellevue-Council Bluffs” MSA name adjustment if the US Census sees fit to do it…

There's no reason why Omaha and Lincoln shouldn't be in a combined CSA.
There’s several reasons, namely, the commuting patterns between the two metros aren’t nearly enough to justify the combination, and likely won’t be for a very long time. At least 15% of workers from each metro area must work in the other for a CSA to form. Last I looked into the data, it was something like 1%. There’s no reason at all they should be in a CSA. Unless we get a surge of people that for some reason live in Omaha and commute to Lincoln and vice versa, when there is no good reason to, it’s not gonna happen.

I was informed by someone the other day who apparently has knowledge in this arena, the Omaha-Lincoln commuting number has reached 10% today. If this is true, we’re inching closer to the 15% threshold..

I’m not sure if that 10% number today is valid or not. Certainly the pandemic probably throws a monkey wrench into it..

I’m just focused on the components we have today for Omaha’s MSA/CSA. If it happens in my lifetime the OMB in Washington DC decides there is an additional adjustment, I’ll “adjust my focus” accordingly :thumb:

You said this back in 2018, and when I pulled up actual data then, the number was 1%. Unless this person has access to data that the census bureau doesn’t, it’s completely made up hogwash. I never knew anyone that commuted to Lincoln from Omaha, or vice versa, let alone 10% of all people I knew. There is no good reason to live in Omaha and commute to Lincoln, nor to live in Lincoln and commute to Omaha. It’s not some secret Washington conspiracy to keep them apart, the link just isn’t there.

Maybe it is made up hogwash. I’m now to the point where I don’t care about that aspect much anymore.. And like I said, I didn’t fact check this latest revelation from him.. Maybe it’s 1% 10% or 0%..

Regarding job commuting between Omaha and Lincoln, I do know 3 people- that make this commute. All 3 live in Omaha and work in Lincoln. I’d suspect the number of individuals who actually do this commute today is higher than you think.. But other people may know no one- if anyone would like to chime in on if you know people who commute for work between Omaha abd Lincoln, feel free to share that info…

Combining both CSA’s together- the number is 1,366,692. Combining both MSA’s together- 1,307,821.. Just crunching the new 2020 numbers and adding them together…

Random fun math too:

At current rates, if it were continue.

2030 KC Proper: 561,439
2030 Omaha Proper: 578,400

It will take probably a century or two for our CSA to pass KC's though at current trends.

So I found some slightly newer data from 2015, and Lancaster and Douglas County both had about 3,000 people that commuted to the other. That's still hovering in the 1% range, if that. https://www.census.gov/data/tables/2015 ... -2015.html

When the State did the Omaha-Lincoln intercity feasibility study, they looked at intercity commutes with data from 2017 and came up with 23,000 daily commuters. It's still way under the required 15% interchange, but more than what that data is showing.

I’d imagine the data updates the OMB uses for the criteria adjustment may be an every 2 to 3 year look. Not sure- maybe every year?.. I would be curious to see 2020 numbers for this..

In any case, I’ve written off any thought of a combined Omaha/Lincoln CSA..in my lifetime at least. You’re young enough where perhaps you’ll see it occur…

How it works is the total percent of work commuters (not population) from one county or core city within a county to any and all counties from another MSA.

Last census had Lincoln at 7.4% and that was talked about rather heavily as to why it wasn't included in the CSA.

Given that dynamic, the 10% number I was told a couple of days back isn’t as far fetched as it seems. I think the definition you’re giving is correct. That gives a glimmer, albeit a slight glimmer of hope for the idea.. I’m still not holding out hope it happens in my lifetime however, lol…

If these employers keep setting up shop in Sarpy County to attract from both metro areas like they have been, you will see it at some point.

Sarpy County is currently the "central point" for employers (especially Gretna, 370, 144th, I-80 etc) and is advertised as such. A large number of new employment opens along these areas.
