Nebraska 56 Fordham 13
1994, Pacific was a worse cupcake.

I agree, 56-13 sounds good.

Fordham beats the spread. Too big. Maybe 3 TDs. All they have to do to effectively win this game is to keep the margin down and pull off one or two good plays.

Hopefully some of the 2nd and 3rd string players will see plenty of action. I would like to see Martinez come out in the beginning of the 2nd quarter.

They are a 4-8 or worse type team. So is Nebraska, but in totally different leagues.

I think it'll be 42-7 at half, and a 56-10 Nebraska final.

Pacific sucked like no one's business, but they at least offered football scholarships. I really don't think you can make even a close comparison in the modern era to what Nebraska is playing tomorrow. Not trying to |expletive| on anyone, but Nebraska might as well be playing Iowa Wesleyan.

* - looks like the "no scholarships" thing is dated info, so I stand corrected on that. I stand by my comparison to Iowa Wesleyan, however.

It would be quite interesting, if the Huskers struggled, even for a half in this game..and won by a 38-21 or 42-24 margin..

Right now, NU would likely lose by 50 to Ohio St and by 35-40 to Minnesota..

I think the Huskers will struggle for a bit in this Game, but pull away for a win…

It’s just amazing how bad Nebraska is now in Football. It’s one of the great collapse in college sports. It’s hard to think of another college football team that has declined as much as we have. I’ve been hearing some names being tossed around for new coaches, I think Frost is a sinking ship and it’s just a matter of time for his story to be over. The whole thing is sad and frustrating.

Granted they're winning right now, the performance so far doesnt inspire much confidence for the rest of the games.

Well, it's nice to see Nebraska win. I never doubted they would. I just wish they had played like this against Illinois last week. I hope they can carry the momentum into next week against Buffalo.

Yes I thought the same thing. They take too long to actually get going offensively and if that keeps up they will find themselves losing to better teams before they even get going.

Right, it definitely wasnt a feel good 52-7 if youre asking me. I wasnt able to watch the second half, but I'm guessing the starters were pulled after going up 31-7 in the third quarter. So the starters put up 31 on Fordham, so that is my gauge on how good this team is. Rest of the points were garbage. If the Huskers were good, the starters would have put up 52 themselves, and the backups tack on whatever. A win is a win, but I'm not inspired. Time will tell.

I agree they got off to a slow start, but I disagree the rest of the second half points were “garbage”. The second teamers gained some valuable real-world game experience that will help the team pick-up the slack if the first-teamers get injured in future games, plus it increases the internal competition within the team for the starting positions. I was happy to see the team complete more successful running plays and passing plays and not have to depend only on Martinez making big run plays to move the ball down the field. His passing accuracy needs a lot of improvement though. Overall, I think it was a much better team effort in this game. Fewer NU penalties and turnovers and recoveries of Fordham turnovers helped too.
He said "They are some big, ugly red brick buildings"
...and then they were gone.

I figured NU would struggle early, then pull away for a win..

I dunno. Some Husker fans might consider this a solid “feel good” win. They won 52-7. The thing is, they won 52-7 against Fordham..I’m completely “meh” about this win..

Once upon a time, NU would win 52-7 against Illinois and Minnesota…

Not that I disagree necessarily. I’m trying not to be negative- I know the team won 52-7..

To your point, I think those 2nd and 3rd stringers would benefit more from an actual team scrimmage..considering yesterday’s opponent..

In any case, the game counts in the win column- and any win is beneficial for this team and coaching staff…

My two cents on the situation:

Nebraska obviously has better athletes than Fordham. The "runaway" portion of the game is simply the better athletic ability of the Huskers.

For the first ~2 quarters, before fatigue starts to separate the two teams based on athletic ability, it's all about coaching and execution.

And for about two quarters, Fordham was about on par with Nebraska in coaching and execution. THAT is what Husker fans should be worried about.

Oddsmakers have Nebraska as an 11 1/2 point favorite over Buffalo on Saturday. Buffalo thrashed their own cupcake team 69-7 this weekend. Yeah.... any plans to run out and bet on Nebraska giving away a touch down and a field goal sound risky. I think Buffalo should cover the point spread and they could even win it. Buffalo is just to much of a big unknown after only playing one team that was a cupcake. Frosty better get his act together fast because Buffalo could be trouble.

In some ways yes but I do think there is undeniable value to getting them on the field in front of a large crowd.

Games like yesterday are really hard to evaluate. If you want to focus more towards the negative you can certainly do that and find things to point out. If you want to focus on the positive you can certainly find things as well. I don’t think anyone can really draw any major conclusions on a game against a team like that.

For me, life is to short to look for or focus on the negatives. I chose to focus on the positives and the win, knowing in the grand scheme of things it really won’t matter once we start playing again next week.

I'll be happy when they can win like that against the likes of other Big Ten bottom feeders such as Illinois, Indiana, Rutgers, Maryland. Heck, as-is, we are looking up to Northwestern, Purdue, Iowa, and Minnesota. Our team is bad. Really licking a clean plate saying anything positive about them at this point. I still love em, but they are bad.

I don't at all feel like next weekend will be a gimme. They may find themselves behind at any point and I cannot feel secure about the next game or any remaining game.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy (though, mostly just relieved) they won. Not gonna lie, I was holding my breath and shaking my head for at least the first quarter and a half. Then Fordham started making their mistakes. I feel most of the good things that happened in the game were gifts to the Huskers, not a product of their own doing.

I am really just looking for them to beat Buffalo and Purdue. Yes, my expectations are very low.

Your take is pretty much where I land right now..

The Huskers are far, FAR from being even an above average Big 10 team..and just being realistic (not negative) looking at their schedule, it’d be darn near a miracle for NU to win enough games to be bowl eligible (6). I’ll always be a fan..but I’ll also be realistic about this team and coaching staff..

I’ve completely ran out of sunshine to pump…

The Fordham game was basically a practice game. We should win those games easily and we did. Buffalo will be more of a test to see if we have improved any and after that game it will be tough to get a win at all . Maybe we might win 4 games this year, 5 would be absolute tops. I would almost be happy with 5 wins. That’s why the Illinois loss was so devastating, they were supposed to be one of the weaker teams on our schedule ( Illinois lost yesterday to world beater Texas San Antonio) .

I thought Smothers looked decent in his debut although the competition was very weak. I think he has more upside than McCaffrey. I can see why McCaffrey left.

Any bets on the score this weekend?

The Huskers are favored by 14 points... I dont think they're going to cover it. I'm seeing more of a 7 -11 point margin.

I'll go with 33 - 23 Skers.

somewhere along those same lines, Nebraska will wear them down in the 2nd half. We could go into halftime trailing.

This is something I just don't know, but I do wonder how many times has Scott Frost won the toss and deferred to the second half? I feel like with how many times the Huskers have started off flat, it does them a detriment to start the second half kicking the ball away. Heck, I bet opposing teams are figuring out that the Huskers suck out of the gate and deferring if they are winning the toss. If I'm correct, he may have never deferred. It does no good to accept the opening kickoff if you can't score. That's the offensive ego at work. I want to see him put the other offense on the spot for once, especially against a "lesser opponent". And correct me if anyone knows I'm wrong about that.

Its the same old story with this years version of the Huskers. Nebraska is the same unskilled, talent lacking poorly coached team we saw the past couple of years. The only clear advantage the Huskers have over Buffalo offensively is the running skills of Adrian Martinez. Nebraska will need Martinez to hold the fort and carry the team or this could end up another loss. This Nebraska defense is awful and can not be counted on to hold Buffalo to a low score. Buffalo scored 70 points last week and if they get going good its all but a given this Nebraska defense will lay down like a dog in the middle of the road and get ran over. Nebraska should win and cover the points but they could loose this real easy if Martinez melts down.

14 to nothing Huskers in front but not in charge yet is my half time report. This could still get away really easy from Nebraska. The oddsmakers have raised the points now and Nebraska is favored over Buffalo by 20 1/2. The under/over on the total game points were over 50 and now have been lowered to 36 1/2. Frost needs to get Martinez to take off with the ball more because you can see that it is there for him to exploit if he just would.

This game could still slip away. Nebraska has left many points on the table, very disappointing. I was hoping Smothers could see more playing time today, that now appears doubtful.

The defense shows some promise, albeit against inferior competition so far, get a better read next week somewhat. The offense still seems so disjointed. Special teams is a joke.

Oklahoma is probably a bridge far too far, but who knows about the rest of the Putrid 10 schedule.

I didn't watch the game, but the box score was unimpressive to me. No score til halfway through the second quarter (again). Offensive production looks decent, but can't score (again). Plus one of those touchdowns was 99% thanks to the Buffalo QB.

The spread ended up a lot more than predicted, but the score should have been what, 49-3? I needed to see more than 28-3 to have any hope of keeping the next game at Oklahoma even close.

This is pretty much what my eyes see as well. This offense and it’s Sr QB still show too much inconsistency..feast or famine type play..the untimely penalties are simply a lack of focus and unintelligent play- I’m not sure this gets cleaned up by next Saturday or even for the season..which leads to atrocious special teams play, a below average punter and absolutely no reliable FG kicker..

Yes, the eyes tell me the defense is better.. but starting next Saturday, it’s “Big Boy” team time for the Huskers..

They got their 2 wins. They’ll have to scratch and claw to eak out 2-3 more..

And it starts Saturday morning 9/18/21- with what will likely be a Sooner feeding frenzy in Norman Oklahoma…

It’s gotten to the point where 5 wins this season will be seen as some sort of progress for Frost and Nebraska. But even 5 wins won’t be easy, because the offense is inconsistent and all three phases of Nebraska’s game are prone to making mistakes and silly errors. Martinez is frustrating because at times he looks great and other times very average. Get rid of Martinezes long run and the big pass he threw to Toure and this game could of been a lot closer.

I would have to say next week they lose big. And the rest of the season will be how well they recover after the OU beat down.

Oregon had a pretty big day today. They upset Ohio State 35-28 in the horseshoe in Columbus.
