About 775 evacuees from Afghanistan are expected to settle in Nebraska as part of the first group arriving in the United States, according to U.S. State Department data.
The data obtained by the Associated Press detailed how a first wave of 37,000 Afghanistan evacuees will be resettled across the United States after they fled from their country when the U.S. ended its long war there and withdrew last month.
...
Iowa is expected to receive 695 Afghan evacuees from the first group of arrivals to be resettled in the United States.
“They will be going to the major populated areas of the state where there are resources and jobs and support systems for them," said Alex Carfrae, spokesman for the Iowa Department of Human Services.
Those would include places such as the Des Moines and Cedar Rapids metro areas, he said.

The Facebook comment section for this article is a trip. Suddenly a bunch of right wingers are concerned about if these refugees are vaccinated. I have to laugh at the hypocrisy.

I'm not gonna venture into that section, but I'm gonna go assume that its a bunch of people also saying 'why dont we take care of our homeless first?' When in any other circumstance the homeless are unworthy of any sort of help or welfare.Garrett wrote: Thu Sep 16, 2021 1:26 pm The Facebook comment section for this article is a trip. We have a long history of Afghanis in Omaha. This will be much less of a crush on our social services than other resettlement efforts.

It very well could be the right-wingers pointing out the hypocrisy about all the concern from the occupant administration wanting to mandate that American citizens be vaccinated but yet seemingly little or no concern about refugees and immigrants.Garrett wrote: Thu Sep 16, 2021 1:26 pm The Facebook comment section for this article is a trip. Well it was just announced that new immigrant applicants will need to be vaccinated and guess what’s also very freely and widely available when these refugees arrive in the United States? The vaccine.guy4omaha wrote: Thu Sep 16, 2021 10:29 pmIt very well could be the right-wingers pointing out the hypocrisy about all the concern from the occupant administration wanting to mandate that American citizens be vaccinated but yet seemingly little or no concern about refugees and immigrants.Garrett wrote: Thu Sep 16, 2021 1:26 pm The Facebook comment section for this article is a trip. Yep. I actually asked one poster what he had done For the homeless since he was worried about them. He couldn’t answer that simple questionLouie wrote: Thu Sep 16, 2021 2:29 pm

Like everything else, the issue turns into left vs right. This entire thread instantly turned into that and the crux of actual issue skates on by. Afghanistan withdrawal was a historical screwup (with major Taiwanese implications) that has been swept under the rug as the US continues to fall in the global hierarchy, all because people are obsessed with left vs right. Stupid government wins again.

Getting out of Afghanistan is the beginning of getting back in the good graces of the rest of the world. Were making progress here no matter how ugly it looks. This will all settle out. The million dollar question here is can our government commit to the world and the citizens of the USA that they will not start anymore wars like this again. I'm not hearing that promise come out of our government at this time at all. They ain't learned a thing and will do this over and over again.NUub wrote: Fri Sep 17, 2021 12:06 pm Like everything else, the issue turns into left vs right. The organizational principle for every society lies in war. The authority of the state over its people, resides in its war powers…

More than 500 Afghan evacuees expected to start arriving in Omaha
Tara Campbell
More than 500 Afghan evacuees are expected to land in Omaha and local agencies are gearing up to get them off on the right foot.
“There’s going to be a huge wave of people coming in to Omaha here in the near future,” said Hannah Wyble, Founder and Executive Director, Restoring Dignity.
In addition to the Afghan arrivals, there’s roughly 800 refugees arriving with traditional refugee status.
That’s the number of refugees who are going to be coming from the Congo, and Burma and all different countries from across the world,” said Wyble, noting they’re bracing for numbers they haven’t seen in years.
President Biden has boosted the annual cap on refugees to more than 62,000, which is a big jump from the Trump Administrations 15,000 cap.

Douglas County just sent out a advisory to health care workers regarding Afghani’s coming in. We are to watch for measles and treat if suspicious, for polio (Afghanistan is one of two countries with wild endemic polio), for leishmaniasis, and for malaria.
Basic stuff for new immigrants, but a good prompt to make sure your polio vaccinations are up to date. Measles can spread easily so again, get vaccinated if you aren’t and wash your hands like it was a new hobby.

Amen to that! I don't think people fully appreciate just how super spreadable measles is as (thanks to most people having their MMR vaccination) it's been off most people's radars for a few decades. If you're not vaccinated and you wave at a guy three blocks away who is infected then you're probably going to get it. Well, not really. lolbigredmed1 wrote: Tue Sep 21, 2021 11:09 amMeasles can spread easily so again, get vaccinated if you aren’t and wash your hands like it was a new hobby.

Measles is infectious 2 hours after an infected person has left the area. Get vaccinated and wash those hands.
