That makes that stinker at Illinois a major sore thumb, but I still think 5-7 with the way the team has been performing lately would be enough... I know, enough in a disappointing way, but enough.
I think he’s safe till the end of 2022 season as well. The team has shown good improvement this year. They just can’t figure out how to win close games. Also we don’t know if Martinez will be back for a 5th season. I think Martinez has some of the worst luck, the fumble did kind of look like the play was over.
Agree with you both. It seems like they've gotta be turning the corner sometime soon. If they were still getting blown out, then yeah Frost should be gone. But they're not. At this point, might as well see what happens next season. And I know it sounds silly, NU could still get to a bowl game at 5-7 if there aren't enough 6-6 teams.

Yeah for the past 4 weeks I think they've done enough to show that this team and org has the right stuff in place for long-term success. But perhaps I'm just optimistic based on the last 15-18 years of husker football ha.

The guy that was going to make us great again and his propaganda machines the World Herald and Shaun Callahan have overpowered peoples good reasoning and seized control of their minds. Yes we have seen this movie before. They have taken Nebraska to a level where the only teams they can beat are cupcakes and the worst teams in the Big10 and somehow spun that to be things are getting better :what:

Husker football has been bad for a very long time. I was 12 the last time we were competitive at a championship level. And there are wayyyy too many factors going against us to attract high level talent at the player or coach level. And you can say 'just keep throwing money at new coaches to fix it'. Well that hasn't and won't work. This isn't an attractive football school like it once was and it really never will be if we're being honest. So having a coach like Frost (good, bad, or otherwise) and the stability of a homegrown org is probably the best we can hope for. Or you can sit and whine and whine and whine about us not being as good as the other legacy schools. One way is a lot more pleasant way to live.

Frost would be expensive to fire and more expensive to replace. The deep pocketed donors have other things to finance. The days when NU had a dozen guys with a spare $100k to drop on football are in the past.

We have a university that used to be so much better than surrounding schools that you could develop walk-one that can now go to ISU for a bigger name degree and go to Chadron, Kearney, South Dakota, or NDSU for an equivalent degree and get scholarship money. So that vaunted walk on program is gone. And with it, all those connections it made.

Actually Frost has done well with the walk on program (Pelini too). I know Riley tried not sure he was here long enough to get much out of it.

Latest example of a contributing walk on is running back Jaquez Yant. He's done so well that I think many don't realize he came to Nebraska as a walk on and has since been awarded a scholarship.

I might be willing to give Frost one more year on the notion that they are "getting better", but honestly, if you look at the incompetence's in game in terms of play calling, special teams, clock management, and overall ball security, there is nothing that's really gotten better about this program from game 1, year 1 under Frost to today. They've flat out given away 2-3 wins each year that he's been here. It's closer to 4 this year. Until he shows me that he can do the little things right and stop handing wins to the opposing team, I'm going to have a negative outlook on him as a coach. I just don't think he has a good feel for playcalling or managing a game in the moment and that's led to losses. That's pure coaching.

I also think it's a loser mentality to think that NU cannot at least compete in the Big Ten West. Yes, NU has built in difficulties, but so does nearly every school in this area. How has Iowa State been able to pull off becoming a solid program? How has K-State in most year? Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota probably have slight advantages in recruiting over NU, but it's not night and day. You should be able to compete with your peers at a school with as much tradition, support, and facilities as Nebraska. No one is expecting national championships. That ship has sailed, but being competent, winning the games you should, a division title here and there, and a rare conference title should be attainable. Nebraska now has one of the longest conference title droughts of any Power 5 program. That is almost mind boggling.

We are now in the suck. You either accept it or you keep trying new things. This is what bad programs do. Schools like Iowa St. kept hiring and firing until they found a guy they felt would make them relevant. Maybe Frost could still be that guy, but name me another coach that started with 4 straight losing seasons to start (in the modern era) and ultimately did anything worthwhile like winning a conference Championship? Even Bill Snyder had a winning season in year 3 at KSU, which was considered a football dead end at the time. This losing by Reilly and Frost is almost unfathomable at a school with the talent that Nebraska has. And yes, they've had the talent to have winning seasons each of the last 4 years, but pure coaching incompetency has doomed them to losing seasons.

I think the bottom line of where we are right now, and it isn't even debatable, is that with hindsight, Scott Frost was not a great hire. Yes, he was the only hire you could have made at that time, but time has proven he was woefully unprepared and in over his head to lead a Power 5 program. We are now at a point where it's become either accept that this is a 7-10 year project of him learning on the job, or start over. I honestly don't think they'll finish with a winning record this year and next year doesn't look much better with so much of the defense leaving.

The only bright spot on the coaching staff has proven to be Chinander. Funny, as he was the most derided part of the coaching staff when it was announced in 2018. I could actually see him get some interest as a head coach coming up after this season with the steady improvement NU's defense has show each year.

With the graduation of most of the defense, and if Chinander left, I think we'd see really quickly just how naked and vulnerable the emperor truly is in Lincoln. And, I agree with Grandpa. The only thing protecting him now is the vast crony system they've put in place down there with guys like Matt Davison along with an extremely friendly media. Had this been a guy like Reilly, he'd have been gone after last year.

They might have had a chance to at least come in 2nd if it weren't for their brutal crossover schedule. I will be really happy if they can win 3 of the 4 remaining big ten west games, and that looks possible to me, the way Wisconsin is looking. But I'd be content enough if they just take care of business against Minnesota and Purdue, and are competitive in the rest.

I think this is taking longer than it had to. I think we overlooked Scott's lack of experience as a head coach (only 2 years at a mid major). He's learning on the job. It's been painful at times.

I do think they are showing improvement. We were getting blown off the field early in his tenure.

I'm definitely a Nebraska fan, but the last decade has made it difficult. I've attended over 150 Nebraska football games including something like 20 road games in about 10 opponents venues. I've seen everything from the glory years, through the decline in the 00's, to hitting rock bottom in the late tens. I can't say I have the same passion for it that I did even 10 years ago though.

Also, I'm not sure I agree that they were consistently getting the doors blown off of them. Yes, there were blowouts in 2018 to Michigan, Ohio St. and Wisky, but they also played nearly every team within a touchdown in the 2nd half of that year. They also played OSU and others closely in losses in 2019 and 2020.

It's a week to week thing with this program. IF they get beaten down by OSU this year will the feeling be that they still have all this forward momentum? Or, if a team like Minnesota does it this week? I'll buy the "making progress" idea but it has to be relatively consistent. A one off blowout can happen, but if they had multiple down the stretch, it would call the narrative on this season into question.

It definitely could happen, but I just don't see it happening. I can't believe I can say this, but the team might actually be good, and I feel good being able to say that.

I would even give em a pass if OSU blows em out 56-10, as long as they take care of business with Minnesota and Purdue and have respectable performances against Wisconsin and Iowa. All of that totally sounds within reach. And as disappointing as the close losses have been, they've all been entertaining.

The oddsmakers have Nebraska as a 4 point favorite over Minnesota. That is a joke. I'll take Minnesota to win the game by 4. Nebraska will win only 1 more game and this game is not it.

Every single stat against Minnesota is flat out in Nebraska's favor, except rush defense for Nebraska, and that is definitely a point of concern, but Minnesota's rush offense isn't that great with Ibrahim out. If he were still on the field, I'd be worried since the Huskers in the last 10 years have stunk it up big time against teams that run the ball. The Skers have better stats against better competition so far this year. I'm going bold...

There are X-Factors though. The biggest of which is can NU buck trends and get out of their own way, especially on the road? They've had some absolute stinkers on the road in the Frost era. They've also had inexplicably bad losses against bad teams such as Illinois last year or Purdue in 2019. They've had little success in recent years at TCF Bank Stadium either and haven't won in Minneapolis since 2011. Yes, it's easy to say that this is a different team and those past results don't matter, but for a program as mentally fragile as Nebraska, that past scar tissue seems to be a big issue. They just haven't shown that they know how to win games, and especially in hostile environments they aren't accustomed to having success in.

Nebraska will have to break form to win this game. They haven't shown much success in breaking the mold of mediocrity yet. I think this is a make or break game for the Scott Frost era. Win this and you have some solid momentum, a road win where you've had little success, and a fighting chance at 6 wins. Lose this, and it will pretty much show that all the vaunted progress is pretty much smoke and mirrors at this point. The optimism will dry up quickly if they lose to this extremely average Minnesota team.

I got nothing... this team, instead of finding ways to win, seems to be conditioned to find ways to lose. That's on the coach and if it was going to be fixed it would have been by now.

What a waste of talent.

This game reminded me of the Illinois game. Nebraska was a favorite in both. We started slow and seemed to lack energy in the first half. This was Martinez worst game since Illinois. Besides Minnesota and Illinois he has played well this year. Purdue is beating Iowa right now in the 4th quarter. That’s our next opponent. Looks like 3-9 or 4-8 this year.

What IF it all came together, and NU beat Ohio State in a few weeks? Is it even possible?

As much as I'd love to see that happen, I don't think it will.

NU needs about 10000 STHs to return their renewal notice as declined. Best if done in public.

I predicted that Nebraska would only win 1 more game this year when they play Purdue in Lincoln October 30th. I was way to optimistic. It is starting to look a lot like Nebraska is not going to win again this year. Purdue after beating Iowa yesterday is now ranked 25th and that leaves Nebraska fresh out of beatable teams. This season is on a downward spiral that is going to end ugly.

One thing you never hear the local Koolade serving media talk about anymore is Wandale Robinson. While Nebraska was losing to a non ranked team yesterday our old friend Wandale Robinson was playing on a national stage for 15th ranked Kentucky against the #1 Georgia Bulldogs. No way Wandale has any regrets for transferring out of Nebraska. Kentucky did not win yesterday but Wandale did score a touchdown. Wandale Robinson must feel right now like he escaped a prison sentence. If we still had Wandale we might of won yesterday. Wandale is a game changer and just might be NFL bound.

Checkout this highlight reel of Wandale against Missouri a couple of weeks ago.

I've been a NU fan since the 60s. I've been through lousy seasons and lousy weather. I sat through heat, cold, rain, wind, snow, blah, blah, blah. I've seen amazing games and heartbreaking losses. This is different. It's been two decades since I was happy with NU's performance. I'm sure Scott Frost is a great guy & he was a great quarterback for the Huskers.

I am sorry to say that I can no longer support the team. When I said that to my brother in law, a Michigan State alum, he was surprised. He thinks MSU has a lousy coach. MSU is 7-0. He said it doesn't matter & that many of those wins were luck. I'll take luck over "Yeah but NU played well" any time.

I'm done. I'd rather go to a Lions game before I'd go to an NU game. Yeah, I know. The Lions suck. That's how done I am with the Huskers. The difference between the two teams is that I have no emotional connection to the Lions. With them I might see a really good NFL opponent & Ford Field is really cool.

Its frustrating for sure. I really have no words for this loss, as I was expecting a big win, and got just the opposite. Stunned, I guess. BUT, I'll still support the team. And I'd sooner take a few more failures from Frost, than replace him with somebody who doesn't care about Nebraska Football, and might not do any better. Its bad. But its been bad, for a long time. It was good to see them compete against the good teams, and heartbreaking to see them lose to Illinois and Minnesota. They should be 5-3, not 3-5. I'm more eager to see Martinez move on.

There was a time when going only 8-4 was considered disappointing. Now if it ever happens, it'll be a dream come true. Nebraska is now in danger of becoming like Kansas. A team that's more than perfectly okay with losing season after losing season and no bowl games.

I hate to say I told you so...but, I told you so.

Losing is in this programs DNA now, and Scott Frost doesn't have what it takes to change that. That is woefully apparent. I'm a big proponent of being able to look at recent history as a predictor of upcoming results. There was NOTHING about the close, supposedly, "good losses" that would have told me that it made NU more prepared to end a 3 game losing streak in MPLS to the Gophers and overall losing something like 3/4 to that program. And, the same issues I saw on Saturday are the same issues that plagued them on the road against Illinois.

Not only if this team the same team that lost to Illinois, it's the same team that blew a late lead against Colorado in 2018, blew a 17 point lead against the Buffs in 2019, and couldn't hold late leads against so many teams in the last 4 years.

I'm confident in saying Scott Frost doesn't have what it takes to lead this program going forward. It's time for the experiment to end. I read online that in the P5 era only one coach, David Cutcliffe at Duke started with 4 or more losing seasons and ever had a winning season at that school. Beyond that, you have to go back to Lee Corso and a few others 40-50 years ago to find another. Nebraska isn't Duke or 1970's Indiana. And, neither of those guys ever won a conference title at their school. The bar needs to be higher than this at Nebraska.

I'm going to count on Trev to do the right thing for both the school and Scott Frost and end this charade.

The idea of some fans who want to treat year 4 as year 1 and say it isn't about wins and losses right now boggles my mind. Scott Frost is not only a bad coach at NU, he's on the short list of worst coaches of all time at this school and that includes guys who coached in the 40's and 50's when NU was rebuilding the program after WWII.

I've never seen a coach at any level I've watched do less with more. A coach who has less handle on his rosters talents and weaknesses and in game management. I've never seen a coach find more baffling ways to take points off the board through sheer ineptitude.

As I've said, the emperor is laid bare and has no clothes. This is a horrendous football coach. shockingly bad. If the AD commits to him another year, you're just wasting a valuable year. Every coach in the B1G is going to use this against him in recruiting. They already know he's dead man walking. NU's recruiting class is shaping up as atrocious. So, there is no reasonable argument to keep him based on sacrificing a solid recruiting class. Just end it now. The worst thing would be for him to come back next year with Martinez as a senior and eke out 6-6 or something, making the simpletons froth at the mouth over a trip to a bowl game like the Motor City Bowl in Detroit and fawning over all the "progess" that coach flea kicker made. The spin machine that comes from people like Matt Davison would have you believe this is moving in the right direction. It isn't. At least the OWH is finally going off brand and not towing the company line from Lincoln.

I’ve wanted nothing more than Scott Frost to succeed since the day he was hired. I believe we all did- even Smucker..

Now, after this years debacle and another likely 4-8 (5-7 at best) finish.. I think it’s time to move on from Frost..

After nearly 4 seasons of the same repetitive performances over and over- a lack of discipline and intelligence in coaching and play, I’m done. One of my best friends, who is an Iowa fan, told me after year one Frost simply wasn’t ready for this job at NU. It appears he was right all along..

But, I suspect, he’s likely “safe” for one more season- unbelievably…

The spin narrative I've gotten from the Frost Uber loyalists is that it's really year 3 because last year really doesn't count due to Covid. Yet, NU led by Frost lobbied hard to play. I said last year that I preferred to see the season cancelled becuase I didn't think the team would be all that good. But, they go their way.

I do see it being possible that a first year AD like Trev wouldn't want to make a change, but honestly, I think the regents will be the ones making this call either way. Trev is just the mouthpiece for it, unfortunately. It will depend how hot the oven gets the next few weeks whether the regents will want to see a change made or if they think the status quo will work for another year. But, I truly believe 2022 becomes a lame duck season for Frost unless he gets to at least 7 wins...which probably isn't likely.

Frustrating as it is, I don't want a new coach. Just let it stick. What I want Scott frost to be is a Kirk Ferentz type. He has been at Iowa for how long? Had a lot of really shitty seasons, but a few really good ones. And I think a couple good seasons would shut a lot of people up. We have our home-grown guy now, ride or die with him IMO.

Unfortunately, this is a false equivalency to try to compare Frost to Ferentz. Frost will finish 4 seasons, all of them losing. Ferentz finished 7-5 in year 3 before going off for 11-2, 10-3, and 10-2 in his next 3 seasons. He shared conference titles in years 4 and 6 in Iowa City. After year 4, Ferentz record was 22-26, but that includes a 1 & 3 win season in years 1-2. Frost will likely finish season 4 somewhere in the range of 16-28. Ferentz was showing clear progression each year. Frost has not shown anywhere near that type of forward progress beyond intangibles like "derp, de derp, they looked so good losing. derp."

Honestly, I'm waiting for the rose colored glasses brigade to applaud the team for putting on their uniforms correctly in a loss pretty soon. Like I said, it's fine to want him back, but it has to be because you want him back because you like him, or because he's a T.O. guy...not because of anything he's done on the field. Because there is literally nothing tangible we can hold onto with this team that basically looks the same as it did in 2018.

Ferentz has had 4 total losing seasons in 23 years. Frost will have 4 losing seasons in 4 years. It is an insult to Kirk Ferentz, who inherited a much tougher situation than Frost from a facilities and fan support aspect than Frost ever did.

Firing him before his extension is over doesn’t do anything except spending more money the AD could use elsewhere.

So, you are suggesting putting up with several more years of this dumpster fire? May as well just drop football at that point.

No other coach would get that courtesy. They had Riley fired the moment he lost to Northern Illinois in 2017. Frost has been sub Riley.

He has definitely done a bad job. We have simply got an Athletic Dept that has screwed the pooch with previous coaches and the bucks we have to cover to pay them off and the money it will cost to put together a recruitment package for the next one. I think that the number of people with the deep pockets and willingness to cough up the substantial donations needed is getting really small. I would not be surprised if the number of STHs drops along with the seat tax receipts.

I admit that I could be underestimating the depth of the money waiting to pour into the AD to buy him out. I do think that a condition of this buyout is that the AD is not allowed to extend a coach’s contract without proven success.
