The incompetent and inconsistent offensive line play is just as culpable as the incompetent and inconsistent play of Martinez. Together, they are the poster children for the inane, mind numbing results we see from NU football week after week this season..

Trev Alberts, as bad as this disaster is, will likely not make a change at head coach- even with an imminent 3-9 2021 season finish. But I’ll say- Martinez has officially “jumped the shark” at Nebraska imo.. The Huskers need to move on from him in 2022…

We need to see what Smothers can do, no better time to find that out than now. Makes no sense to keep Martinez in all the time when the season is circling the drain.
Nope. Martinez needs to put on the bench and give the next QB a chance. Other college teams have done it this year when the starter struggled. Not sure why frost can’t seem to make the change.

At this point, I don't really care if the remaining three games are close losses or blowouts. But I'd rather the backup(s) get a shot at it, because Martinez isn't getting it done. Man, his play really makes me miss Tommy Armstrong and Taylor Martinez, frustrating as they both were at times. But that said, I doesn't matter what I think because I won't be watching the Skers the rest of the season.

If Nebraska can't beat a team like Purdue, there's no way they'll be able to take on Ohio State.

I’m not sure if anyone listened to the post game press conference but Scott is completely in over his head.

Every answer was “I don’t know.”

“There aren’t any new answers.”

“It’s not my job to always get them motivated” (well, kind of)

“A change at QB was never talked about” (why not…?)

“I didn’t talk to them. I had the captains talk to them.”

And seems to be completely lost if he is leaving it up to his players. Wonder if any more player commits will bail this week

Oh well, another disappointing game! So it goes.

I realized something yesterday. My wife is a MSU grad. I was happily about them beating Michigan and honestly had no interest in the outcome of the Nebraska game. I casually looked up the Nebraska game later. Something is very wrong. I shouldn't have felt like that.

You want Scott Frost gone? Fine. But if you're looking for the next Tom Osborne, forget it. He just isn't out there.

Odds makers have Ohio State as a 15 1/2 point favorite on Saturday. The start time is set for 11AM but that seems to be not set in stone. The game is supposed to be played on Fox but that seems not to be set in stone yet either. I can't believe that they would put Nebraska on national TV to be honest. I can't help but think Ohio State can cover those 15 1/2 point easy.

I guess there is an outside chance Ohio State could have a really bad, embarrassing day and get caught-off guard, but I feel like it could get ugly real fast, something like Ohio State by 35.

The 2021 version of Ohio St may not be the same dominant version we’ve become used to over this past decade, but it’s good enough to post a convincing win over the Huskers this Saturday morning..that said, if the Husker team that showed up to play against Michigan and Michigan State shows up against the Buckeyes, I can see the Huskers covering the 15 1/2 point spread..

I don’t see NU winning this game, but they are capable of playing a close game with Ohio St..if the Husker team that showed up to play Purdue yesterday shows up Saturday morning, they’re equally capable of losing by 51 1/2 points to Ohio St as well…

The way this has played out has been beyond fascinating to me. The cult of Frost is still so strong. I honestly can't believe there are so many that are defending him, deflecting blame to the assistants/players, and saying he needs more time.

The reality is Scott Frost is on the short list of worst coaches in Nebraska football history. There is no spin that changes that. "good losses" can't sugarcoat the lack of preparation and total ineptitude. I think the average Nebraska fan is so battered at this point, they don't believe they can do better or even deserve better.

this has only happened a couple other times in my life (both when I wanted prior coaches gone), but I will be actively rooting for Nebraska to lose on Saturday. Not only will I be hoping for a loss, I'm hoping for a beatdown. I'm hoping for a 20 point deficit at halftime where they are showing the fans streaming out. I want no doubt left. I don't want to be able to hear inane arguments about how this is the only Nebraska team to not have a double digit loss since 1999 and they are really only a few plays away from being 7-1 or 8-0. They aren't. You get what you earn, and this team has earned every bit of 3-6. The sad little emperor has no clothes in Lincoln. He needs to be exposed for the complete fraud he is once again and maybe a few within his cult will finally see the light that they've ben duped.

I think they're going to play them like they played all the other highly ranked teams this year. Surprisingly close and might actually have a shot at it at some point. Ohio State is much better statistically in most categories, but the Skers are actually narrowly better in rush offense and pass defense, and you can easily argue the Skers have consistently played much tougher competition than the Buckeyes. I think it'll be another heartbreaking, kinda close loss. Huskers down 7 with opportunity to tie late, but Ohio State gets a garbage time TD off a Martinez turnover to make it look worse than it was.

Ohio State 31-17

That said, I do not think they will win another game. BUT, I do think the close losses matter to Scott Frosts job security. I think the team showing up against what are now three top 10 teams has piqued my interest in seeing what they can do with next year's easy peasy schedule. Especially if they can do it again against Ohio State, and even just be in the game at Wisconsin, and vs Iowa. I want to see what he can do with not-the-country's-toughest-schedule. Even next year, I could see them just going 6-6, but this fan base is so down, that that would even be enough. For me at least.

Debbil's Adfocate: SF didn't forget how to coach all of a sudden. 2017's UCF team was legit. Not because of Aubrin, which is a chronic underachiever when it matters, but the Memphis game. Memphis has a habit of ruining other teams seasons and UCF didn't blink.

The problem isn't Frost, it's NU. I've brought these points up before, but they bear repeating:

1. 4- and 5-stars don't want to come to Lincoln or the Rust Belt in general. The fall/winter weather sucks at worst and is demoralizing at best. The 4/5 studs get better offers at warm-weather schools. Don't come at me with cycles--a month ago the B1G fanboys were confident that they'd reached the SEC level but they...ahem...resorted to mean in a hurry. Say the SEC stumbles--the ACC is there to take up the slack. NU used to own Missouri prep football. They harvested who they wanted out of Denver and MSP. Held their own in Chicago. Opened eyes in FL, GA LA and TX.

2. The biggest disappointment on the face of it was the inability of Frost to keep the Florida pipeline wide open. I'll fall back to point #1.

3. "Homegrown talent"? Oxymoron. Nebraska prep football is dead. The rare 3-stars are going to Northwest Missouri or Iowa Western.

4. Transfer Portal is the worst thing to happen to CFB. If you wanted proof that BCS ball is the farm team for the NFL, there's your proof.

Add to these points, and I've still got: Parents afraid of CTE and plain old concussions, the decreased emphasis on in-depth sports journalism, newspapers in general dying (ditto the 10PM local news), the preternatural emphasis on 'number one or bust', ADD in society in general.

Scott's contract is through 2026. The original 7 yr contract was extended by two years in 2019. The buyout is 5 million per year for the remaining years through 2024 and 2.5 Million for the last two years.

The Transfer Portal is a bad coaches worst enemy. I think Scott Frost is proof of that. The Transfer Portal gives the crew a chance to get off the sinking ship before they go down with it. We get a new coach in who knows how to work the Transfer Portal maybe we find a new quarterback and win 6 games next year and go to a bowl. We stick with Frost and we will be lucky if we win 4 or 5 games.

Scott Frost has one winning season as a head coach. The 13-0 season in a mid major looks like an outlier than a pattern. Frost couldnt keep recruiting pipelines open because he's been proven a fraud and an abject failure at the p5 level. This is pretty clear to me.

You can recruit to this are. Maybe not to a national title level, but you can be competitive with the right scheme. If Wisconsin, Iowa, Iowa St, and kansas st can have some relevancy so can NU. To say otherwise is a cop out....let alone being as historicaly bad as NU has been.

Yes, frost inherited a program in the dumpster, but hard to argue you need more time when instead of just fixing it up, you doused it in gasoline and lit a match through pure arrogance and ineptitude.

This guy gets it. Players in the program and recruits realize he's a snake oil salesman, in over his head, and playing around in daddys suit that doesnt fit. They arent going to waste their careers on this fraud.

And any argument of the schedule getting easier next year so lets see what he can do with it is inane. A competent coach could be 7-2 with a little feel for the game. It was all here now but lack of attention to detail has doomed them. You get what you earn in football.
Frosts teams dont do enough right to win. That's all on the coaching and preparations.

Sure, he might muddle to 6-6 against an easier schedule. A good coach might go 8-4 with the same tools. It's apparent when you have a poor carpenter.

CTE is a huge impact on football here (no pun intended).

I take care of babies and boys with hemophilia and we used to have to have the talk with their dads about contact sports being unsafe and that included football. Back in the 1990’s and early 2000’s, the typical reaction was grief. Today, it’s “so he can do track or cross country?” Cool.

Parents just don’t see the need to go for football as hard as back in the 60’s to the 90’s. Going to be a lot of other factors that haven’t been unpacked yet, but the CTE and chronic disabling injury risk is real in parents’ minds these days,

I heard the same regarding Callahan and Riley. See a pattern?
not really. I see NU's failures in hiring to be separate from whether a coach needed to be fired. In nearly every case from Solich on through Frost, one can argue that each of these coaches deserved to be fired either due to on field results relative to expectations at that time, or off field conduct. NU has made extremely poor hires at both head coach and athletic director nearly every time. There has been meddling from the board of regents and chancellor that pushed certain agendas. I'd argue that Nebraska athletics is one of the most mismanaged entities in all of college athletics. It's full of cronyism.

Bottom line: If what you're doing isn't working, you keep searching until you find something that does. The only good thing about Eichorst/Riley and Frost/Moos uncontrolled demolition of the program is that the bar has been lowered so low that you can never talk about expectations being National or conference championships anymore. Now, it's 6-6 and a bowl game...at least to start. Not looking inept and clueless in play calling would also be a positive step in the right direction.

Programs with less have come back from more than NU in a relatively short amount of time. The inability of anyone involved to even remotely right the ship says more about their acumen than anything else.

The last time NU found itself in the dark ages 1940's-1961, they cycled through 7 coaches in roughly 20 years. It's next man up until you find the guy and you can't feel nostalgic about a former player that's currently wasting space in the coaches office.

I was speaking in the micro--in wanting a hemorrhage of a loss in order to clean house, but...

Let's explore the macro: Bumbled hires, AD meddling, regents meddling--how much of this needs to happen before this becomes NU's culture? I say it's already happened. I keep coming back to this point but I'll try to flesh it out: No one wants to come here. You mentioned programs that have fallen, then gotten back up. Miami, Penn State, USC, Washington, UCLA, FSU. What do they have in common? Close to population centers. What does NU not have? A population center. Being near a stream of blue-chippers can cover up a bad hire. Being far away from one magnifies bad hires, and starts a feedback loop. I posit that Nebraska is unique in this regard.

Except for Riley, each of the post-Osborne hires was extremely defensible. Solich was as much a no-brainer as Tom was in 1972. Callahan was going to turn NU into an NFL farm team like USC. Bo and Frost were 'player's coaches'. The jury's out on Trev, but all the post-Osborne AD hires were politics first and organizational acumen second or third. (Curiously, Osborne, the best AD NU had...went into politics!) Regents/chancellors? The less said about Spanier, the better. After the B1G became interested, the old farts were more concerned about how to spend all that TV money and how to turn NU into an Ivy League/Stanford 'builder of men' rather than a mere athletic powerhouse. 8-4 is good enough for Iowa, Michigan State, Minnesota, Northwestern, etc., but they have a geographic advantage over NU and I'd say that 7-5 is the mark to shoot for. What's wrong with that?
There are countless Big XII, SEC, ACC, P12 schools that would be happy with 7-5--including a lot of schools who have in the past won Natl Championships, produced Heisman award winners, pick your metric.

Want another metric that 7-5, 6-6, 5-7 is as sustainable as one can expect in this geographic/demographic landscape? Look at Ames. I bet you dollars to donuts that Matt Campbell will never win a conference championship at ISU, and I'll likewise bet that he'll do so at a bigger school. If NU is lucky, some newbie will cobble an 8-4 together, play in Florida in a New Year's Day game--and immediately get poached like NU did to UCF. More likely, NU will become a coaches' graveyard, where former FCS or Div-II coaches get a middling payday and then get run out of the industry when they fail to produce.

Frost's problem is that he led with his heart. He was rumored to be on UF's short list. Let that sink in. If he'd gone to Gainesville do you really think he'd be putting up 4-8, 5-7, 3-5?

Nebraska is finding its level. If it's any consolation, they'd be in the same exact place if they'd stayed in the Big XII.

Can we discuss the bet, if I recall right, we made two years ago about win totals? :D :;): I think it was a bet that if Nebraska didn't win 7 or 8 games (or was it 9? I suppose it doesn't matter) that you'd owe me a beer.

Just kidding

Lol right- that was at least 2 or maybe even 3 seasons ago..when many of us (of course me included) thought Frost would succeed as head coach at Nebraska..

Well, that fell through like a lead balloon. Of course, either way, I’d buy you a beer- I’ve got you on my “hops/barley owe list” :)

Prediction time:

Nebraska 24-21 over Ohio State. As I stated earlier, MAYBE everything comes together. Also, after all these years of inexplicable and mind-numbing losses, it's gotta be time for an inexplicable win against a top-5 opponent? But just to straddle the fence, I am fully prepared for a blowout loss haha.

Shades of Michigan State 2015 :banger: I hope it happens. I think that was their last good win, so its been a long time.

Obviously in football anything can happen. But I don’t see a Nebraska win this week, in fact it will most likely get ugly. Nebraska looks like they are ready for the season to be over since they lost to Michigan. Ohio State 45 NU 17.

Nebraska’s best chance for a win will be against Iowa. To close out another terrible year for Frost. Mistakes and not doing the little things have been Nebraska’s calling card for quite some time now.

Right, it doesn't hurt to hope though. I think they'll be the best 3-9 team in the country :banger:

If NU beats OSU, this would give Scott Frost his signature Bill Jennings win, like when Jennings beat OU in 1959 and probably saved his job for the time being. It didn't matter as he was ultimately fired after the 1961 season.

It's possible, but I don't think it happens. I'm thinking OSU beat NU to the tune of 38-20.

See that’s the problem with this 2021 Husker team..

It’s not so much a mystery that more often than not, they’ll lose..It’s how they’ll lose which makes it so hard to pinpoint..

If NU plays tomorrow against the Buckeyes like they did against Purdue, I can see a 4-6 touchdown blowout loss.. If the Huskers play tomorrow like the did against Michigan St or Michigan, they’ll cover the spread and lose a close game..

Again, for me, it’s not so much they’ll win or lose (against Ohio St)-they will lose- it’s how they’ll lose which is the mystery to unravel…
