Re: Nebraska Football 2021
Dirk Chatelian of the W-H gets it..completely- From his W-H piece after the absolutely embarrassing home loss meltdown to Iowa-
“Logan Smothers had just thrown the interception that clinched another baffling, rollicking, devastating defeat for Nebraska football when a few Iowa players turned toward the west bleachers and mocked the Sea of Red. They grinned. They waved. They hollered.
“You suck!” a prominent young Hawkeye shouted.
You’re going to be very tempted this offseason to focus on the novelty of 2021. The FBS-record eight one-score losses. Any summary of NU’s 3-9 record must include these details — the rugged strength of schedule and the extraordinary number of games Nebraska almost won. It’s fascinating.
But a word of advice to those inside the Osborne complex: Bury the what-ifs now. Scrub the excuses immediately. Resist the urge to scapegoat and sugarcoat. The Huskers (and their fans) can’t keep spinning these heartbreakers as honorable results. You play to win — and Big Red just lost more games than any season since 1957.
3-9 is 3-9. Nebraska did not almost succeed in 2021.“

Re: Nebraska Football 2021
I think people ought to be thankful they competed in every single game. Yes, so many frustrating close losses that could have been close wins if not for fatal blunders in each game. The huskers are bad, they've been bad since 2017, so to expect much more than what we got this year is just not realistic. They were that close to being 12-0 and playing an Ohio State or Michigan team for the Big10 title and a playoff berth on the line. Heck, I even declare this the best year since joining the Big10. Zero blowouts. Say that again. I saw enough this year to give this thing some more time. I don't remember the last time we could say the boys showed so much mettle against like six top 15 teams

No offense, but I completely disagree with this take. It represents what’s wrong with the program, the attitudes of the players and coaches, and a goodly amount of the fan base. Nebraska football just completed its worst season since 1957. 3-9! And it was a total failure. Be thankful? Lol. Dirt Chatelian’s column is 1000% correct.Busguy2010 wrote: Fri Nov 26, 2021 10:18 pm I think people ought to be thankful they competed in every single game. Re: Nebraska Football 2021
Don't get me wrong, the loss to Illinois was totally inexcusable, but the rest of the losses are to top 30ish teams, more so top 15 teams, all by single digits. Lets hope Illinois beats Northwestern tomorrow so our boys aren't in sole possession of last place in the Big 10... But, I think they're right there.
IMO, the Big10 was incredibly competitive this year, which is good to see. They lose a lot of good players, so it will be interesting to see if they can keep up the defense next year. If they can, I think next year will be good. At the very least 6-6. If that benchmark can't be met, then yes, I do believe it is time to move on. But if they do meet that mark, I don't want to see a change.

Re: Nebraska Football 2021
And #5 Michigan beats #2 Ohio State 42-27! The amount of parody in the Big 10 this season has been exquisite.
Now, Michigan will be playing Iowa or Wisconsin with a playoff berth on the line, with Ohio State likely on the outside looking in. Still think they have a chance if some weird stuff happens next week.
Nebraska lost to two playoff contenders by 3 and 9 points. Pretty impressive if you ask me. I still wish they would do like they did last year and have the champions weekend where everybody plays. If the Illinois-Northwestern game ends like it looks it will, Nebraska will be 6th place in the West and would have been playing Rutgers for 11th place in the Big 10. What fun!
I think they could pull it off.

And down goes Wisconsin.
It'll be Iowa and Michigan for the Championship. Not exactly what I expected at the beginning of the year.

Iowa played against Michigan State in the 2015 Big Ten Championship and lost. They had a pretty incredible play in the 4th quarter with an 85-yard touchdown pass.

Not much left to say. The results speak for themselves. 9 losses. First time since 1957. Conglaturation on the accomplishment...I guess?
I hope the Frost Fiends enjoyed what they saw on Friday. I hope the enjoyed the taste of the rotten leftovers that were served up. It was just more of the same, but none of it can be blamed on the favorite scapegoat: Martinez. This was actually a showcase of everything Scott Frost represents as a head coach. This is who he is. The lack of attention to detail. The inability to make halftime adjustments. The sloppy play that likely comes poor practices. Not putting the right players in positions to succeed. Not sticking with what's working. This was system. This was coaching...to quote Bill Callahan.
The clock is ticking for Frost now. To me, it's 7 wins in 2022, and competitive in most every game, or GTFO. I'll drive the U-Haul down to Lincoln next year if he finishes with 6 wins or less against an easier schedule.

1000% correct. It’s 7 wins for Frost next year (at a minimum) or he’s gonzo. The culture of this football program and fan base need to change..and anything less than a WINNING REGULAR SEASON is unacceptable. This 6 win bowl eligible aspirational goal is BS..omaha79 wrote: Mon Nov 29, 2021 9:14 am Not much left to say. The results speak for themselves. 9 losses. First time since 1957. And while he’s assembling his coaching staff, he must hire coaches who will challenge him (Frost) and not cave in to his authoritative style..and for Gods sake, hire a SPECIAL TEAMS COACH..
Win in 2022 or you’re gone Scott…

Re: Nebraska Football 2021
It wasn’t that many years go when a certain NU athletic director responded to the football team’s latest 9 WIN season by sacking the head football coach (Frank Solich), and proudly proclaiming that he wouldn’t let the team continue to drift toward mediocrity (represented by “only” winning 9 games per season).
Fast forward to 2021 and the latest athletic director happily rewarded the latest head football coach who had only won 3 games with a vote of confidence to return to coach in the new year. I guess that 9 losses is somehow considered something better than a drift toward mediocrity.
Either (or both) of the following statements are true:
1. The AD has no idea what he would do to fix things if he fired the present head coach, so he elected to punt the decision into late 2022 ( a much better punt than anyone on the team seems capable of), or
2. If the head football coach had any other name than Scott Frost, he would have been run out of town before Thanksgiving.

Yeah remember the losses during Callahan's last year? I so remember the Okie State game. The team came out like they didn't want to be there and quit during the first half. It was so obvious. We left at half time and didn't come back. I've never done that before. Took my brother to that game, he 'd only been to a few games in his life and even he didn't want to go back.Busguy2010 wrote: Fri Nov 26, 2021 7:47 pmFor me, this makes it sting a little less. Yes, for some a loss is a loss, but for me, they were close losses to some of the best teams in the country week in and week out, and they showed up week in and week out. Only inexcusable loss was Illinois, really. Everybody else is either ranked in the top 15-ish right now, top 5ish (Ohio State, Michigan, Oklahoma), or barely outside the top 25 (Minnesota, Purdue). The schedule was brutal to say the least. The boys aren't there, but they are so freakin' close.jag42 wrote: Fri Nov 26, 2021 6:56 pm I just can't get over that ALL NINE losses were by single digits, and to a lot of really good teams.

We'll see. It may not be up to yours or a lot of fans' expectations, but I'd bet $1000 that if they get to 6-6, Scott Frost will be back, no matter if they win or lose the bowl. IMO, you gotta set attainable goals. The bar is very low, as I believe it should be right now. The Skers have been a stinking pile of scat for about 5 years now, and despite the record this year, they are almost good. Worst record since 1957, but I far and away believe this is not the worst team since then. I'd give that moniker to the 2017 team. In fact, this team was arguably the best team in the last 10 years or more. Zero blowouts is what does it for me. There have been a lot of seasons with otherwise good records, but with a couple completely embarrassing blowout losses on national television each year. Having avoided that this year is a huge improvement IMO.

Sorry man. But I completely disagree with your take. 9 losses are NINE losses. 9 failures to win..and it doesn’t matter, imo, if those losses were by 3 points, 7 points or 59 points- they’re still NINE losses. It starts with the head coach and trickles into every aspect of this team, their mindset..and then their on field performance..as fans, we should expect nothing less, at this point, than a winning regular season. Frost is UBER lucky to have this one last prove it season to get it right..as his tenure as a head coach has been an outright failure..and remember, at least through 2019, even I was still supporting him as the eventual HC answer. Now in 2021 going into 2022, after what I’ve witnessed the last 2 years, I admit I was wrong. I honestly don’t think Frost is the answer anymore..
But, with that much easier 2022 schedule, adding on new, fresh coaches (and, hopefully, a special teams coach), he needs to deliver a winning regular season next year. Any less, and I 1000% believe he needs to go. And this football program will be the better for it..as it can’t get any worse than where it is right now…

Lol, true but I don't think Alberts is clueless and that he may turn out to be a good A.D. To your first point, one could argue that the metrics(and game) has changed from almost 20 years ago. I think Solich was a good coach but not a good head coach. I supported his firing because he lacked a global vision to compete with the best; he was a poor communicator, didn't recruit well and often struggled to develop the inherited young talent. And oh yeah, Craig Bohl. Had Solich moved on from him sooner he might not have been fired. You could certainly argue Solich deserved another year but you could also argue a better head coach could have gotten much more out of what Osborne left(the 1999 team being the exception). Does Husker Nation at this point really just want the mediocrity of 9-3 every year over the embarrassment of 3-9?
I'll go with statement #2. I think Callahan and Riley were particularly damaging to the Nebraska program culture. I'll give Frost the nepotism preference for one more year over rolling the dice on the latest hot hand from a non-power 5 conference. The program hasn't had much stability since Osborne. Has there been one good head coach/A.D. relationship in that time? I don't think Moos was the type of guy to ask Frost what he could do to help. Alberts wants to be that guy. Maybe it's as much about giving Alberts a chance as it is giving Frost one more. If Frost can't achieve improvement that translates into substantial wins I do believe Alberts will find another vision.

Yeah, I get that. But I think everyone outside of the "A loss is a loss" group can see that the Huskers are trending up. You could hear it every week from the announcers and the opposition's coaches and fans... Nobody wanted to play the Huskers and that is a dam good thing. They might have been only a competent kicker, punter, returner, and a couple good offensive lineman away from a Big10 West title this season. I can see that, at least. A lot of people can see that. They're close.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Mon Nov 29, 2021 12:55 pm Sorry man. The difference between 6-6 and 7-5 next year is nil for me. It makes no tangible difference. 6 wins is bowl eligible, 7 wins is also bowl eligible. At that point, nobody cares what bowl the boys go to, just that they go to a bowl at all. So IMO, it would be short-sighted to fire a coach just because he can't get a coveted 7th win. Now, if he doesn't get 6 wins, then yes, I would totally be in agreement for showing him the door.
Anyway, we as fans can think what we want. It's just my belief that inside the building, 6-6 is the benchmark for him to meet to keep his job. Retaining him after a 3-9 season tells me that the expectations can't be very high for next year.
I'll go one step further and predict what it takes for him to keep his job (you aren't gonna like it). This isn't a prediction on how it will go, just the bare minimum it will take to retain his job.
2022: 6-6 bowl win or loss notwithstanding
2023: 6-6 bowl win or loss notwithstanding
2024: In the mix for the Big10 West, so 3rd or 4th, depending on the strength of the conference, but likely 7 or 8 wins. Bowl win or loss notwithstanding
2025: In the mix again, but maybe better at 8 or 9 wins. Bowl win or loss notwithstanding.
2026: In the mix again, 9 wins, bowl win or loss notwithstanding
2027: Okay, for the love of god just get 2nd place in the west. Win the ones that matter. Bowl win becoming more important, but still not a requirement.
2028: Win the West. No matter what the record is, win the West. Championship win or loss notwithstanding, as long as its close. Bowl win.
2029: repeat of 2028
2030: Win the West, and finally win the Championship game. Playoff berth, win or loss.
2031: Established as perennial playoff contender. Win or lose the Championship game, able to make playoffs because they are "that good" in the eyes of the selection committee.
2032: Finally win the Championship game, top 4 playoff seed, win playoff game. Win or lose semifinal.
2033: Win the Big10 again, top 4 playoff seed, win semifinal. Win or lose National Championship.
Yes, that is how long I think it'll take. At least if that pans out, they'll be relevant-ish in a few years.

The absolute best part of this was the radio broadcast with the hot mic during the commercial where Matt Davison (I think, correct me if I'm wrong) spent 90 seconds bascially calling everyone a bunch of quitters. It was |expletive| amazing. Literally the best trainwreck I've ever witnessed in real time.Greg S wrote: Mon Nov 29, 2021 11:31 amYeah remember the losses during Callahan's last year? 6-6 is a losers benchmark. If Frost intends to maintain his head coaching job, he needs to deliver a regular season winner. 7 wins at minimum. Anything less is unacceptable. 6 wins does not denote progress..
For 2021, 9 losses is NINE losses. 1957- WELL before even I was born- was the last time this football program has sunk this low. There are NO moral victories. You either win or you lose. They won’t place an asterisk by the 2021 Husker football season by saying “they were 3-9, but they’re close. Look at how they played these teams so tough blah blah blah”
The reality is, coaches and programs are judged ONLY by whether they win or lose. Nothing more. Most fans I’d hope, by now, aren’t satisfied with moral victories. I understand you are..but I’d be willing to place a $1000.00 bet that Trev Alberts isn’t looking at it that way..
This football program at Nebraska has completely dropped into the abyss of where the Kansas Football program lays..and the only way out, is to change the losing culture-
And that starts with a winning 2022 Huskers regular season. If Frost can’t deliver that next year- I’ll happily help show him the door…

Re: Nebraska Football 2021
Agreed with this almost completely (although I'm on the record as thinking this is a John Blake situation back then as it smelled bad from the second year). Close only counts in very few situations, and football isn't one of them. Pointing to the fact that a team didn't get boat raced, but still lost...and somehow that's a good thing to be celebrated or accepted is a slippery slope into a dark hole. I remember when people used 9 wins as a basement win total for Nebraska instead of clinging to hope to 7 wins (yikes!).Omaha Cowboy wrote: Mon Nov 29, 2021 10:30 pm
I understand your “cup half full” perspective.. I really do. And, in fact-after the 2019 season, I’m on record on this forum for feeling the same way..but after the debacles of the last 2 seasons, NO WAY..
Look at how they played these teams so tough blah blah blah”..
Ciao..LiO…Peace
The only positive that I think Nebraska has is that they finally have a semi-savvy and coherent person as AD again. Additionally, and the funny thing is, is that you really only need 1 or 2 good seasons to turn the momentum around anymore and the media throws you back into the spotlight. I think the new coach after next year just needs to hit that ground running and the train will start moving again.

Sounds like Mickey Joseph will be first assistant hired. We lost out on him a couple years ago. Glad we it looks like we will get him this time.

Omaha Cowboy wrote: Mon Nov 29, 2021 9:21 am1000% correct. Conglaturation on the accomplishment...I guess?
The clock is ticking for Frost now. To me, it's 7 wins in 2022, and competitive in most every game, or GTFO. I'll drive the U-Haul down to Lincoln next year if he finishes with 6 wins or less against an easier schedule.
And while he’s assembling his coaching staff, he must hire coaches who will challenge him (Frost) and not cave in to his authoritative style..and for Gods sake, hire a SPECIAL TEAMS COACH..
Win in 2022 or you’re gone Scott…

Sorry to say it but I believe that with the changes and renegotiated contract that he has two years promised unless next year is worse than this year.

My gut tells me they already know who the new OC is and there has just been a great job of keeping it quiet. Could be that he is still in an active coaching position that he needs to stay with.
I do agree the announcement will be all at one time

The Nebraska game on the day after thanksgiving was the most watched football game in BTN history. That night the Nebraska volleyball game was the most watched volleyball game in BTN history.
The brand is still strong.

There was one game where Jim Rose--in so many words--apologized 'on behalf of the team and the University' for the performance. I think Jim stepped down from the broadcast duties soon after due to a breakdown of sorts.Greg S wrote: Tue Nov 30, 2021 11:15 amI don't think so since it was almost 15 years ago.omaha79 wrote: Tue Nov 30, 2021 9:47 amIs this anywhere to listen to?Big E wrote: Mon Nov 29, 2021 9:08 pmThe absolute best part of this was the radio broadcast with the hot mic during the commercial where Matt Davison (I think, correct me if I'm wrong) spent 90 seconds bascially calling everyone a bunch of quitters. Wasn't Jim also really tied in with Steve Pederson?

Mickey Joseph confirmed to be coming back to Nebraska. Bit of a coup for Nebraska to bring him back.

More good hires for the Nebraska staff (at least on paper).
Be curious to see what they can do with one off-season.

I go back and forth on whether it's one off season. I really trust Trev and I think he knows what to look for as far as improvement. Too bad he wasn't at UNL a year earlier. I thought then and still do, that these changes should have been made last year.
