Was round 2 of weather girls in Omaha. First was a blonde woman who worked at Channel 3 then jumped to channel 7. Displacing the venerable Mike May. Debra Meyer. When she was at 3, ratings were higher. When she left, 3 hired Carol Scott. As a boy going through puberty, I was especially fond of how she could stand in front of Wyoming and blur out most of northern Nebraska and NE Iowa, but leave KS.

Married for a time to the founder of Mannheim Steamroller and is in the album art for Fresh Aire 3. Moved from TV weather girl, to musician and photographer.

Sad to hear, RIP

I worked directly with Ryan McPike with a financial company I worked for years ago. You'll be surprised. I can attest his annual pay was just above 100k as Chief Meteorologist for 3 at the time. I can only imagine Bill Randby's pay. I think the pay for these news channels are highly underestimated for Omaha's market in this post.

I agree with you there. Omaha is not an entry level Television market..far from it..

And those who want to be here, on air, and commit to stay..*as opposed to bolting to a larger market the first chance they can*..will get paid handsomely by doing so…

Whatever happened to Ryan McPike. He was let go and then seemed to disappear everywhere and even on his social media accounts.

I think in this type of job it gets harder to get hired as you get older, sorry to say especially for women, but men also. They must feel if they can move up to a larger market they are possibly buying themselves “more time”. So thus it makes sense to bolt at the first opportunity. Some like Randby and Knicley have chosen to stay, but in general if you can jump to a larger market you shouldn’t pass it up.

I know when I watch local news in larger cities, the on air talent is generally older and more seasoned looking than the people we have on air in Omaha. Just my observation and opinion.

Ahhhh. This brings back a lot of memories of the Omaha TV market in the 1970s, when TV personalities (let’s not call them journalists) started to be a “thing” here. For some reason it usually starts with the weather person. I seem to recall that more viewers actually tune in to watch the weather than either the news or sports segments. Omaha had its “weather girl” phase back then, before settling back to actual meteorologists in the 1980s and thereafter.
I never met Carol but I had friends who knew her and spoke highly of her. It is sad news to hear of her passing.

That was a slam against Deborah Meyer, the mousy blonde that was his competitor. IIRC, it got him fired. She moved from 3 to 7 and Carol Scott was brought in to steal back the weather girl thunder.

Fun times back when channel 7 hosted All Star wrestling in their basement and channel 3 had a live studio for Creature Feature. It took up a surprising amount of their studio floor at 108th and Mockingbird. TV news set and the standard issue “serious interview” set basically filled what was not Jean’s Story Time. Ironically, Miss Jean was on one side of the news set and Creature Feature was on the other. Nowadays, Miss Jean would be banned and Creature Feature would have to have a trigger warning.

Looks like he may be from the south- he went to college at U of Memphis and also at Mississippi State…

Okay, fair enough. Before, you just said he went to college there. I saw his very first forecast, and when he said throughout, he said it like "true-out" so I was thinking Chicago or northeast. Maybe just nervous.

In any case, I agree. I will have to take time get used to him as with any new news person I see... And I'm sure I will like him as with 99% of the KETV hires. But keep in mind, all the good hires leave, and in two to four years, you will be likely be moaning about his lack of commitment to Omaha for moving to greener pastures. We'll see.

Let’s not get snarky here.. What you’re missing in your ”moaning” about lack of commitment to Omaha comment- completely misrepresents my point on this aspect. It’s not that they leave, they most always do..It’s HOW some (not all) of them leave the market, and their lack of transparency when they do, I sometimes have a problem with..

Laurann Robinson’s departure and the “mystery clown show” surrounding her (obvious to me) eventual departure, was a prefect example of what I mean..So let’s make sure you get that straight..I will say, and I have stated this several times in this thread, I’d much rather receive my news from on air talent which I believe wants to be here and likes the community..as opposed to using Omaha as a stepping stone to move up the TV market food chain..That’s my feeling and perceptions anyway..you and others probably feel differently..

As it relates to the current weather team at KETV-

I’m just glad KETV finally pulled the trigger and hired a 4th meteorologist..they were running thin the last several months…

I actually like how they did the storm coverage today without Bill. It had its hiccups, but to me shows a level of trust, and perhaps a changing of the gaurd coming soon. Like a within the next couple-few years.

I bet! Nothing like being in a new city/region for less than a week and having to cover a storm running the length of the viewing area and moving super fast with different warnings popping up all over the place.
