Ketchup/Mustard etc Condiment Thread

I have a friend that loves mustard, but would puke if he put ketchup in his mouth. That seems a little backwards, but I'm not judging.

ketchup is for kids. Mayo will make me puke, but not from my mouth.

Speaking of things for kids, who as an adult loves Mac & Cheese and eats it regularly? I never really got into it at any point in my life, though I dabble in it every now and then. When I do, I add garlic and pepper. I know a couple of people who Mac & Cheese is one of the few things they can stomach... They are also strictly bland on everything... No pickles allowed, no condiments whatsoever, no onions, basically no flavor. Anybody like that or know anybody like that?

I remember when I was a kid, my younger sisters liked to dip their fries in their chocolate milkshakes. One of them used to dip them in mustard. I wasn’t having any of that, hahaha..

I always dipped my fries in Ketchup- still do. But if you go to Chick Fil A and order their waffle fries, dipping them in Chick Fil A sauce is the way to go. Same with fries and ‘Canes sauce from Raising Canes..,

I’ve used horseradish sauce on prime rib and roast beef occasionally..

Not all the time..but I’d say 50% of the time…

Can't say I use it often, but I do think it tastes good. Last thing I remember using it on was this recipe for Hawaiian ham, cheese, pineapple, horseradish and poppyseed sliders. They were pretty darn good. I remember I didn't want the sauce, just unadulterated horseradish in vinegar. And I exhausted all the usual grocery stores, and finally found it at Whole Foods. Nobody else had anything but the creamy white horseradish sauce, and that stuff looks unappealing to me.

I usually make my own horseradish sauce because I like it spicy. Tastes great in a roast beef sandwich. I like straight horseradish on a club cracker with smoked salmon or trout and provolone.

Yes. I have several picky relatives that I dread going out to dinner with——kinda like Meg Ryan in that restaurant scene from ‘When Harry met Sally’ when she orders the pie. I just want to crawl under the table.

I have bought the kind you mention that is not Creamy at HyVee

This was a number of years ago, so things may have changed. But yeah now that you mention it, I know which one you are talking about, but if I recall correctly, there was something about it that I was not looking for, I.e. it was more than just horseradish and vinegar.

The recent talk we’ve had in the fast food thread regarding Taco John’s and Taco Bell got me thinking again about condiments specific to fast food restaurants..

We know Raising Canes has their ‘Canes sauce..Chick Fil A has their famous Chick Fil A sauce etc..Regarding Taco Bell (a place I’ll eat at about once a month), if I don’t get their Fire Sauce as an accompaniment to any of their taco/burrito/chalupa’s etc, I can’t enjoy or really want to eat any of their menu items..

Does anyone else feel the same way regarding any fast food joint that offers a specialty sauce as a menu item accompaniment?…

Definitely at TB I have to have some sort of hot sauce. I think they're all good.

At Abelardo's, I definitely prefer their avocado hot sauce, but their regular hot sauce is also very good. If I'm eating in, I love to get a big scoop of whole jalapenos and carrots.

Raising Canes is the other one that comes to mind, I just can't imagine eating it without the sauce.

Also, I must have Chick Fil A sauce to dip their waffle fries in..Ketchup, somehow, is a poor substitute…

Maybe I'll have to try it again. I just wasn't sold of Chik-fil-A sauce. It is sort of like Cane's sauce, but it's like it might have some extra oils in it.

I had a roast beef sub from Potbelly’s today (first time I tried them, food was catered in for a business luncheon), and I used Gulden’s Spicy Mustard on the sandwich and it was very good. I’m probably going to go to the grocery store and actually buy a bottle of it..

Anyone else like Gulden’s Spicy Mustard?…

Your first time having Pot belly?? I love pot belly, but I have not knowingly had that mustard... But I do always get mustard on the sandwich.

Yeah the spicy brown Gulden’s mustard was a very nice complement to the roast beef sandwich. I just gave it a shot as it was the condiment Potbelly’s packed into my catered sandwich/lunch box..

Definitely going to buy some next time I go grocery shopping…

I wonder if that's the mustard they use all the time. Cause it does look a little more brown than the usual yellow mustard.

Does it really? I'm thinking that may be more of a psychological thing, or that the difference in fries being dipped has some sort of affect on the flavor, but I'd be interested to see if you've actually tasted them side-by-side with the same fry or just tasted them with a spoon. If you have, then I buy it. If not, I don't. Now I want to try it too haha. I guess I never ever really get the ketchup packets because I'm almost always taking the food home to eat, and I'll use the Ketchup I have at home, which is the Great Value Organic (the best) variety of ketchup. Haha, it would take me months to go to all the different places so I can get their ketchups side-by-side.

Side note. For some odd reason, I do not like ketchup out of those new-ish (I guess they've been around for quite a while though) ketchup boat thingies. I know they're way more practical than just a packet, but for some really weird reason that I can't explain, I don't like them. I guess I'm old school. OR, maybe I don't like them just because I don't like Heinz ketchup. That is such a weird psychological thing for me.

There is definitely a difference.. to my palate at least. I’ve actually used the same order of fries and used ketchup packets (Heinz) from 2 different fast food places and the flavor was different. I can’t explain why, it could be the way the packets are stored, exposed to heat etc..but to me at least, there is a taste difference…

Okay, I can buy that as an explanation. One of my sort of hobbies is eating MRE's. I usually have one or two per year, and I've had some pretty old ones, and there are definitely differences between ones that are supposed to be the same, but different ages, and storage conditions.

Haha, I still may try the ketchup taste test out, but like I said, it would take me months to compile enough of a variety. Honestly, I'd have to guess the older ones probably do have more flavor than the newer ones, if that's the case. Just based on my experiences in MRE use, I'd guess an older one would be darker and more robust.

I'm not sure this the thread, but I think it is closest... I just had Mama's pizza with a group, and I posed the question, would anybody split a small pepperoni and pineapple pizza with me? I got a fat no, so I didn't get it. I got totally shut down haha, but I really was craving it pretty hard, just not enough for a whole pizza to myself. But it did bring up the very polarizing topic of does pineapple belong on a pizza? I believe it is a very good topping, and actually, I have to say, I get it surprisingly pretty often. I don't eat a super big amount of pizza, but when I do, I'd have to say a good 25% of the time, I have or put pineapple on it. Also, I do believe no pizza is really good without the addition of extra minced garlic.

I think we could leave it here in this thread. You have definitely touched a polarizing subject from a “foodie” standpoint.. There is a very vocal minority of people who absolutely LOVE pineapple on pizza. I’m not one of those people..but I’m not such a radical “pizza purist” who would say pineapple never, ever belongs on pizza, lol. I’ve tried it, and frankly didn’t like it..

So I would not consume even a slice of pizza that has pineapple on it. But, “you do you” is what I’ll say in this regard…

, I had one leftover slice, and I ended up buying a pineapple on my way home, and sliced it up and used some of it on my reheated slice. So I guess I really do like pineapple on pizza.

And I might add, the last time I had pineapple on pizza, work catered it in. I don't remember the exact restaurant, but I think it was Toppers. They catered in like 25 pizzas, 5 different types. And actually, the one with pineapple on it went just as fast as all the others... I think it was BBQ, chicken, pineapple. I really enjoyed it. And going by how it went just as fast as the rest, I'm guessing there are a lot of people out there that quietly like pineapple on pizza.

Anybody try Vegemite? I understand it may not be a well known one. I first saw it on an MRE review on YouTube by Steve1989MREreview, and he just loved it so much that it made me really want to try it... But I never knew where the heck I'd get it, kept forgetting about it, etc. So I've wanted to try it for a couple years now, and I finally got around to finding some today! Little did I know, Its in stock at World Market right on L Street.

Anyway, for those who may not know what it is, it is a yeast extract spread (whatever the heck that really is, I'm still confused). I just tried it for the first time, and at first, I was like WOW is this? but as I had some more, it grew on me quite a bit. Enough that I had to stop myself, because it is very, very salty. I think I like it. I did some research, and apparently people either love it or hate it. Its an Australian thing. You pretty much just put a little bit on toast or crackers. I'm still having a hard time figuring out what the heck is up with it. Its very salty, and it sort of tastes like a super concentrated steak sauce sort of a flavor, with a little bit of a burnt flavor and aroma to it. Again, I'm pretty sure I like it, its just such a confusing condiment. I can't quite wrap my head around it yet. Like, I think it's good, but I don't understand how... Its so weird.

Anybody else have it before?

I have it from time to time. I typically spread it on toast with butter.

Very informative video. After sleeping on it, I've come around to confirming that I like vegemite. I bet the more I have it, the more often I'll have it. I don't love it yet, though. I think it'll be one of those things I get a weird now and then craving for, like green olives and sardines. I don't crave them often, but when I do, they are really delicious to me.

Ha. I just caught this post..

When I eat the traditional fish and chips, I do prefer to have malt vinegar. It adds an additional layer of flavor and “tang” to the fried fish. I say yes to malt vinegar…

I’m sure this potential Sriracha sauce shortage may make some people very nervous..

I’ve just never been a fan of Sriracha and I’m a person who enjoys spicy food and sauces with a kick..

Now if there was a potential Tabasco sauce shortage, I’d likely run to the grocery store this afternoon and buy up as many bottles as I could. I love the original red Tabasco Sauce

I prefer Tabasco over Sriracha in every situation except Asian cuisine.

I think we may have already discussed this earlier in the thread. But of the vinegar based hot sauces, I will always prefer Louisiana Hot over Tabasco. And as far as Srirach goes, I'm definitely not in love with it, though I do enjoy it from time to time. I actually more often have a jar of the chili garlic sauce in the fridge, not the regular Sriracha sauce. But in the end, I won't care too much if the shelves are empty for a while. But having made this announcement, I'm sure the shelves will empty that much faster.
